OK guys, I got in over my head and I need someone's help. This is what my client is looking for:

my client would like users to be able to select different dance moves and then drag them into a timeline and select play and have the character dance the moves in sequence.

They would supply the background, the dancer, and the music. All I need from you is to create it all.

Have a timeline, be able to drag certain dance moves into that timeline, and then when play is clicked, have the dancer DO those moves in order. I can also supply the movieclips of the dance moves.

If you can accomplish this, please email me with how much $ you are looking for to do it. PLEASE do not contact me if you "think" you can do it. Don't tell me two weeks down the line that "well, I tried, but I can't." That doen't help me.

Okay, I feel sick to my stomach. I'm not kidding. I honestly feel sick because of the potential I am looking at in this field.

A lot of people complain about their jobs or lack there of. They complain about the current market and the recession and what not. Well...screw all that. We've got to go out there and take what we want. We have to generate business ourselves and not rely on someone to throw us a bone and give us a paycheck every other week.

It's time to make some serious money. Why the hell not? We are sitting on the brink of a new age. And WE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE THE RIGHT SKILLS. We know flash. We know computers. We are way ahead of the game.

Okay....listen to me and then seriously consider what I am about to tell you.

Let me first tell you about myself....I am a flash designer...with a background in traditional animation and a degree from UCLA. I have made a couple flash sites, and received some praise for them. Praise to the point that I am now the head flash designer for a web design company in Beverly Hills. Okay...but ....all is not well.

I slave around for a paycheck that is less than I'm worth, and I get a rinky dink commission on any job that I bring to my company.

What are we selling?

Flash sites primarily. However...I have grown disillusioned with constantly making flash sites, and bending to every whim of my clients. The process takes weeks and weeks to complete, and I'm at the point where I'd rather outsource it to someone like you or someone else. And trust me...there are a lot of flash designers out there with talent who would jump at the chance to take on a project. I have no problem outsourcing my projects and taking a small profit for my trouble.

However....I want to talk to you about something else. Something not Flash, but that can incorporate flash. Hear me out.

No one makes huge money in the service industry. You can do well...but doing a service takes time and effort and has a slow turn around time.

The real money is made when you have a product and you can sell it to a large number of people. You maximize your profit, and you can do it in a relatively small amount of time.

Let's be honest here....the most important factor in all of this....is selling something. Selling somebody, somewhere on your product. Convincing some stranger to give you money for whatever you are selling. That is the essence of business, and is the most valuable skill to have.

It turns out that I posess this skill. I say this because my recent endeavors have proven to be quite profitable. I have stumbled onto something that every business could use.

CD business cards.

They are a company that make these things.

CD's cut to the size and shape of a traditional business card that can hold 80 MB of data. Hear me out...they hold anything and everything. Graphics, text, video, sound, flash sites, html sites....basically, if you can digitize it, these cards can hold it.

These cards have no download time. The person viewing the card never has to wait for anything to load. It's already been 'loaded'. With that in mind,...think of the cool flash stuff you could do without worrying about memory all the time...and how fast the thing loads. The constant 56k modem concern is gone.

These cards have a silk screened image on the front of whatever the client wants. They actually can come in custom shapes, so long as it's symetrical so that it can spin in the tray efficiently.

People can use these cards like they would use their traditional business cards...except they are much better. They hold more information, they are more engaging, state of the art, effective, and impressive. Especially if they contain a flash site on them or a flash presentation. They are the perfect tool for promoting a business and generating traffic to a site. Oh yeah, they launch automatically when you put them in a computer, and they can link to your website.

Pretty damn nice, no?

As a flash person.....you can always try to sell people on creating a flash site or redesigning their current site in flash and then burning that on a card.

These CD business cards can be bought in bulk for a reasonable rate. If you buy a thousand, they are a dollar a card...and that includes an individual plastic packaging for each one.

Okay, so what the hell am I talking about. I'm talking about making some money here.

In the past two weeks.....I have created a few lists of emails which targeted certain industries. I started off with photographers, thinking that they could benefit from having a card which they could put their whole portfolio on.
I sat in a dark room and copy and pasted for hours and compiled a list of a few hundred photographers. I also hit up some modeling agencies. I then wrote an eloquent email describing briefly about Flash, trying to sell them on getting a flash site, and also explaining CD business cards.
Keep in mind, this is just me...in my spare time....sending off a few emails to a few hundred people.

From that initial email surge that I sent off.....I have received a mountain of response. I'm talking about photographers and modeling agencies from all over the place writing me back asking how they could get some. To name a few.....
-a photographer in new york wants a flash site and cards.
-a photographer in upstate new york wants a flash site
-a web designer in new hampshire wants to outsource her clients photographer site to me.
-a modeling agency in Moscow wants a flash site.
-a modeling agency in China wants CD cards.
-a modeling agency in Washington D.C. wants 1000 cards
-a photographer in central california wants a flash site
-a photographer in chicago wants a flash site
-a photographer in dallas wants a flash site
-a photographer in london wants CD business cards
-another photographer in new york wants a flash site
-a web design studio in california wants CD cards
-a photographer wants Cd cards and a flash site.

THEN I sent out some emails to architects...

-an architecture firm wants CD cards
-an architecture rending firm wants CD cards
-another architecture firm wants CD cards

AND now I'm dabbling with Real estate brokers..
-a real estate broker wants a quote on CD cards
- a real estate firm wants CD cards...

...and liteally the list goes on and on, I can't even keep track of these leads.

And this brings me back to why I feel sick. Because I am just barely scratching the surface of this thing. I am sending out a few hundred emails and generating this sort of response. The product is legitimate and sells itself. My marketing strategy is working and my emails are being well received.

BUT...I need some help here. I need a team of people. Partners. Like minded individuals who are smart and capable and who are looking to earn some money. For example...

Look at the real estate agents....and just marvel at how many potential clients are just sitting there. I have spent the last five hours collecting five hundred emails from Real estate agents in California. AND I'M NOT EVEN 1/4th the way done with the CALIFORNIA section. I mean, it's ridiculous.

My next industry to target is LAW Firms. Law firms all have literature that they produce about their company which they put out in brochures. They send these things out and spend the money to print the paper and mail off the heavy thing. They might easily spend five bucks a pop. These companies need to be made aware of CD Business cards. They are cheaper and a million times more effective. I haven't even sent one email to a law firm....which frustrates me. But I don't have the manpower...or the time to get these email addresses. That's where you come in.

Look, I just looked at a directory site for law firms..and there are literally thousands upon thousands of firms around the country and world listed there. All of them could should and most likely will be interested in what we have to offer.

Let me give you some bottom line numbers. For the standard amount of 1000 units.....I charge one dollar a card. I buy each card for 75 cents a card...and my manufacturing will go down on that number when I flow him some business and when I have a large order of course.
I also charge a set up fee of 250 dollars to assemble their data, create a master, silk screen their cover art, and code the card to launch automatically.

Therefore, for a standard order of 1000 units...I am making 500 dollars profit. I can do all this within a couple hours. Once I get the order...I burn the master, assemble the data and then send it off to my man at the manufacturing plant just outside los angeles. He handles the shipping. As of now...I'll have to deal with the invoicing and billing and such.

I've researched this industry and have learned that if you can land a large company or big client, you can be doing orders of 50,000 units and up. Companies with budgets for promotions or marketing are interested in something like this. Just brainstorm on it. Beer companies are always promoting stuff....why wouldn't they be interested in some tight flash presentation on a CD business card they could use for promotional events. Movies promote like no other. Why wouldn't they want to print out a few million to hype some major movie campaign. Cruise lines and Resorts send out thick fat ass brochures to try to seduce potential clients. Why wouldn't they want to upgrade to the digital era. We are offering them something that is more cost effective and simply better than what they are doing now. They simply don't know that it is possible. They need us to bring it to their attention. Please, if you have any other ideas or suggestions on markets to target, go ahead and tell me. The possibilities are endless. I'm taking an ad out in the local actors paper. Actors can send Cd business cards to casting agents with their picture on the front and on the inside, there can be video clips, whole photo shoots, a clean flash presentation promoting who they are and what they bring to the table. It's a much more effective way than sending a headshot and bio. Those things get put in piles, cd business cards get put in computers and experienced.

Jesus, this is long.

Okay, so here is what I'm proposing. If you help me collect these email addresses.....I will pay you a commission for every client I get that was based on one of your emails.
I will give you 20 percent of the profit just for getting me their email address. I will handle everything else. I have a mass email program, and I will keep separate lists so that I can track where each lead is coming from.

You supply me the emails...and I share the profit with you.

That is the offer on the table.
Of course, I would eventually like to develop more of a partnership in time.

Anyone Want To Make Some Extra Money?
Is there anyone in the Boston area that would like to make some extra money teaching me ActionScript? I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to teach myself Flash for about a year or so, and when it comes down to it...it's ActionScript that just makes no sense to me whatsoever. Make A Little Money From A Flash Site (i.e.: AdSense) ?
I have a website fully made in flash, which has been going on for more than a year now, with some success.

I know you can put AdSense boxes in regular blogs, html sites, etc., and I guess I could do the same inserting the adsense code in the html container which loads the main .swf file.

But I've recently seen some really cool ads (don't know if they're from google or from any other company) integrated straight into flash sites or even videos, and I was wondering whether it would be possible to use them in my site.

Any tips on this, or ANY other information regarding the subject would be really helpful, as I can't find much using the search feature in the forum.

How Hard Should I Make It? (senior Project)
I am interested in making something using Flash for a senior project, but I don't have any experience in Flash, and I don't know what is within limits for me to do for project. I have to have at least 30 hours of time logged in making whatever it is I will be making, but that is about it for requirements. New To Flash - Trying To Make Sphere With Satellites Project
I am new to Flash, although I have taken a class. I'm just having a difficult time learning this software. The project I am trying to do is make a sphere or a large circle on the page with satellites or moons going around the sphere in the middle. When you mouseover one of the satellites, the rotation should stop and clicking on that satellite should take you to a specific web page. Is that something that is possible with Flash? I am to the point where I know what the stage is, what objects are, the tools and some of the panels. The timeline and layers are difficult for me, especially keyframes, blank keyframes, tweening, and other commands. How much will I have to learn to make the above project work? Thank you for your help. I would really like to learn this program and be able to create some neat movies.

No One Else Helping, So I'm Going To Try Here.
no one else is helping me in the flash MX forum, so i'll try here... i REALLY need help with this.

i've been trying to figure this out for a week now on my own, to no avail.

i have a scrollpane component on my site. i want it to match the background color of the rest of the FLA. but whenever i put the movie clip in the scroll pane, the background is white with black text. so, i adjust the tint and a vew other color vairables... but whenver the percentage is at 100% tinted or whatever, the text disappears. but if i bring the tint down, the text slowly starts appearing. like the color of the text is changing with the color of the scrollpane. so the question is, how can i get JUST the scrollpane to change colors to match the rest of the movie, while keeping the text black (like it is in the actual movie clip)?

also, i'm trying to get buttons to link to different movie clips and load them in the scrollpane. but when i click the button, it just empties out the scrollpane. and i ahve the movie clip set to export for actionscript, and everything else i can think of. here is the code i'm using.

on (release) {
scrollpane1.loadScrollContent(newmovieclip);
}

why isn't it loading the new movie clip like it should?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks So Much For Helping Me, But...
I can't seem to make it work. I did as you said--taking the actual video clip (buttermix2.flv) out of the external swf that is loaded through the asfunction/loadMovie link on the scrolling text, and created a video object named my_movie, with the same w/h dimensions and x/y coordinates in its place. The buttermix2 flv and swf are stored in the same location.

Then I used your code in the first frame of buttermix2.swf substituting the last line to read:
netStream.play("buttermix2.flv")

and saved and published both the main movie and buttermix2.

When I go to the "main movie" fla and go into "test movie" mode to click on the link that calls buttermix2.swf to see if it works, what it loads is the swf but there's no movie playing in it--just empty. I can't figure out why it's not streaming/calling the flv into the video object. Thanks so much for helping me. Do you know where I went wrong?

Looking For A Helping Hand
I am really new at trying anything to do with flash, but I have an idea I would like to use on a website I am trying to design.

I want to generate something like a "Laser Targeting Icon", that will move around the page, and stop at predetermined spots, and when it does, will show a picture or text of what may be found in that area.

This is my first flash and I almost followed this site's tutorials. FLA can be found here (right click and save). You need to have 5 pics called pic1.jpg - pic5.jpg in a folder called 'Collections'

It's actually loading 5 pics from a folder. Loading in the following manner..
pic 1 pic3 pic5 pic2 pic 4

so that one pic won't overlap on another. Currently pic1 fadesIn and fadesOut.

Problems:
1) There is a 'flick' in between the fadeIn and fadeOut.
2) I want the 2nd Pic to appear just before the 1st Pic disappears.
3) It takes ages to load the image from the server when I use the loadmovie every time! Is there any way to save the pics when it loads the first time?

I can code a little. Flash knowledge is about _alpha = 10
Any help would be much appreciated.

OOP Helping Hand?
Hello,

My background is more art/design/photography etc than programming.

I learned programming in Flash MX, and recently got back into flash with Flash 8.

So basically, whereas OOP might be second nature to many of you, it really means nothing to me

I have tried and failed to convert some of my code into AS2 classes.

So I would really appreciate it if one of ye OOP faithfuls here at kirupa could do exactly that?

This is a somewhat simple function comprising of 2 elements, a flower whip that gets sort of sucked towards a large vortex flower. It's not basic, but it's not mega complex either.

If I post the FLA, would you be able to turn it into AS2 classes and post it back?

If I could see how the code would be turned into classes, it would help me a lot, I'd be able to learn how it's done.

A Helping Hand Please
Okay so I tried to do the same effect as a web site, just so that I could learn some stuff and see how well I could come close to actually doing it.

I followed the preloader tut in the archives and it works if I don't have alot of content in the second scene(ie, i have one picture) but when i have alot my preloader sticks at 99%....... here's my code .. i know it works too<>>>

Repeating A Name? HELPING A FRIEND
Hi you!

I am having trouble doing something!

I want to make an animation that will do the following:

A person writes their name in a line "Peter" for example
and later the name appears repeated in the animation without anyone having to write it again.

So what I want to do is just having the person enter it once, and later in the story line it will come out again but fixed. Meaning I don't want it to be possible to change it.

I have kinda managed by creating a symbol from an input line but when it reapeats later on the animation it won't show up if I rotate the symbol or something, and I will let itself be re-writen.

Lending A Helping Hand
As the subject of Flash, and particularily ActionScript is so vast, I would like to make some tutorials dealing with the most common questions that can be found here, and some which are more complex. Not only do I want to help other users of flashkit with this, but I would then also learn from solving the problem myself.

Now, my main gripe I have with a lot of tutorials, is that they are seldom downloadable, there are many different formats that they come in, and I, myself, prefer to read the instructions of a piece of printed paper.

I am willing to make these tutorials myself, and together with the fla's and swf files and a pdf document, host them on a site for downloading.

What I am asking for is some input on the exact format that you guys -
and gals - would like, and also perhaps some input from senior flash gurus on the best way of compiling a certain script to perform a specific action.

I am not an expert in flash, but I would like to become as close to one as is possible, and I think that by tackling lots of small projects, I can learn a lot more about flash, than by creating my own website, which would be limited to my knowledge in flash.

Another thing we could also include in these tutorials is a "how did they do that section", in essence finding a really cool effect and then trying to recreate it.

If you guys will give me some input on my idea, and let me know if it is even viable then just post a reply with your suggestion, or even a request for a particular tutorial and I will try my best to make it up for you - with of course your own input and that of other members of Flashkit.

And to the owners, moderators and other people who use flashkit, I hope that my idea would not result in my stepping on anyone's toes

[F8] Helping An Old Friend But Stumped
The daughter of an old friend has bought a Flash template for a photography site and asked if I can help modify it. Obviously I said yes, as a favour, but now I've looked at it it's a bit beyond me. I managed to sort out putting a link to her photoblog in it, but she has asked:

'I'd like the left hand box (the main menu area and where the photos are displayed) to be made wider, at the moment it is 332 but I'd like it to be 560. I'd also like the height changed to 567 to 505. The right hand box can stay the same width but the height would need to change to match the left hand box. I'd then like this centred up.

I've have attached a basic example of the sizes I'm after.

The other change I'd like to make is to the gallery section. Would it be possible to add two more pages inside that one? Ideally I'd like each of the pages (total of three) to have a theme title so I could put the images into categories.'

I'd really like to help her get her project off the ground but as I said I can't figure it out. If any of you would be good enough to help the zipped file is here.

Helping People With Flash
Hello, everyone.
I have written a few books or so (technical ones that is, though I have written more novels) and I thought - why not do one about Flash?

However, I wanted to make it different.
Firstly, I decided I wasn't going to write it alone (unless I really had to).
Therefore I am asking anyone who wishes to submit scraps of information, help, snippets of code or even a full chapter to reply to this post. I really would like people to help me out.

The plan is, I will write chapters of my own of course, but also meld in a compendium of everyone elses. No ones name will be on the front cover, instead, each person that submitted something will get some space at the front of the book about themselves. The first version will be a free e-book available for download. If that version is succesful, I will think about trying to get it to the publishers. (I have some pretty useful connections with publishers).

Finally, I would be very happy if some people would submit small actual .flas and .swfs to put on a side disk / download. Even if you do not write about it, you get credit for it (although I will undoubtedly end up writing something explaining it).

Helping With Navigation And Buttons
hi im new to this site hello everyone.......i recently learned flash and tryin to make a web page.....however im having a problem the problem is ok i kno how to use frame labels and make a button on scene 1 to go to that frame label on scene 1......but how do u make a button in a movie clip to go to a frame or frame label on scene 1 ????? i've tried everything i can think of and tried the "goto" action but it wont work.......... help anyone???

one more thing how do u make a button unfunctional after u've clicked on it ??..... thanks alot everyone

hmmm. i need to make sumthing so when u buy(FAKE) sumthing your money goes down and u get the thing u buy and i need it to save your money. more then 1 user so different people have different ammount of money.

I made a site for my bosses company for free a while ago. She has now offered to pay me to make one for her other company.I dont want to overcharge, and i wanna give a good deal. How much does a standard flash site go for? I will be sorting out 2 years .co.uk hosting, updates, etc. Assuming the site would be of roughly the same standard and have the same content as the first one http://www.quasar-enfield.co.uk (still under construction) how much do you all think i should charge? Would also be about the same standard as my portfolio www.jamescorcoran.co.uk (also under contruction). Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Helping Me Will Give You Good Karma
I hope that someone can help me. I am making an interface that is comprised of many different letters in a stream. As the mouse pointer moves over a particular letter (which will be a button to another page), it flies out of the stream and into open space. When the mouse pointer moves off of the letter I want the letter to fly back to its original position. Get it? I can make two separate animations (one flying out and one flying back) but it's realy prone to collisions and there's no guarantee that the flying out will happen first. What I need is some action script that will recognize where on the screen the button is when the mousepointer rolls out and pull it back accordingly. Kind of like a yoyo or snap-back effect.

I hope that this is coherent and that some kind soul out there can help.

Helping Sorting Out A Local_data Function
Basically i want to be able to set what is effectively a cookie in flash. The example here shows what i have so far.

I think that all the pieces needed are there, and they are in the same place as they are in my movie. But they are not working.

So can someone help me sort out where the code needs to go etc.???
