Windows XP & Flash Player Issues

I have recently completed some new Flash MX applications on our company website and immediately got some harsh feedback from our XP users in the office.

Apparently when they go to the pages with these applications the browser just sits there and clocks and nothing comes up. So this brings up two issues for me.

#1 My version detection script doesn't work at all for these users. And for users WITH version 6 it gives them the popup!!!

if (_root.getVersion() < 6) {
getURL ("javascript:NewWindow=window.open('http://www.oururl.org/upgrade.html','upgrade','width=275,height=175,left =0,top=0,toolbar=No,location=No,scrollbars=No,stat us=No,resizable=No,fullscreen=No');NewWindow.focus ();void(0);");
} else {
gotoAndPlay("Preloader", 1);
}

#2 When I have had these co-workers on XP go to macromedia.com and install the latest flash player 6 it still leaves them with Flash player 5.something even though it said installation complete. Now I know that it could be that they need to clear cache, reboot and whatever to install flash player 6 but I'd have a hard time getting coworkers going through the trouble let alone users of our site!!?!

Can anyone help? Whats up with Windows XP and Flash? Apparently it comes with Flash Player 5 that isn't easily upgradeable.

Windows Media Player Or Real Player Through Flash
Not sure if this can be answered all that easily, but does anyone know of a way for streaming video to be displayed through a flash movie. My guess is that it has something to do with java script and Active X. If anyone know any possible directions I can go with this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - J

Flash Player Vs Windows Media Player
Hi,
I am trying to decide between Flash and Windows Media to stream video content form a web server. I would like to go with Flash but do not want to do so at the expense of reduced video quality. My questions are:

1> Will Flash have an ability to show videos on Full Screen mode? If so, when should we expect that to happen?
2> Does Flash support variable bit rate encoding? If not, when do you think it would? How does Flash encoding compare with Windows Media encoding?
3> Besides the player being available on most browsers, does Flash have any other advantage over Windows Media Player?

Flash Detection With Moock FPI: Windows/IE Loading Issues
I've installed Colin Moock's Flash Player Inspector scripts on a new site, and everything works fine on the Mac side (IE & Safari), but Windows/IE just hangs. IE continues to "spin", but the SWFs never load (all other graphics do, though).

Has anyone else seen this problem before? ...And figured out how to fix it?

Flash And Windows CD Player
I am doing an enhanced CD for a music group, with extra photos etc. does anyone know how to control the Windows CD player with Flash 5?

I need to create an interface for the Enhanced file (Flash standalone player) that is capable of playing the regular music files that are already on the CD through the windows CD player.

Any suggestions?

Windows CE And The Flash 5 Player
Does anyone have a definitive answer to when the Windows CE operating system will be able to support the flash 5 player?

i have read a few articles that say that the new Windows CE devices as from November (ish) will be able to support flash 5 movies.

My company has bought a few of the new devices but they appear not to support or be able to use the Flash 5 player

Any answers or viewpoints would be gratefully received

Flash Player 9 And Windows 98
I am current having a problem wwith flash player 9 under windows 98. It seem that when I visit a site that uses Flash player that Flash keeps using more and more of the system memory to the point that the system resources will be exhausted, causing the PC to slow and stop functioning properly. Once either all instances of IE or Firefox are closed the resources are returned and my PC operates "normally" again. Depending upon which web sites are visited this problem can occour after as little as 5-10 minutes. Returning to flash player 8 removed this problem. Are they any known confiliction under windows 98 when using flash player 9?

Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Windows: IE7/Flash Player Problem
Hi,
I hate to ask this, but it is driving me nuts.
For some reason I uninstalled my current Flash players and installed FP6 for testing purposes (and all through that I knew I shouldn't have done that). For this I used the uninstall exe from adobe.com.
ok. I tested, uninstalled again and tried to install the latest player again (again via adobe.com).
Firefox seems to work alright, but in IE7 all I get are white blanks where flash movies should be. If i right-click, I get the Flash menu telling me "About Flash Player 9" and that the movie couldn't be loaded.
This also happens on adobe's flash/about page. This tells me: I have the latest plugin, the embedded movies are being recognized but not shown nor played...

Does anyone have the slightest clue what's wrong?

Where Can I Find The Flash 7 Player For Windows?
I am trying to find the Flash 7 player for Windows. All I can seem to find is 8. Does anyone know where I can get the older player?

Flash 9 Standalone Player For Windows Xp
I've sucessfully updated my flash browser plugins (IE6 and Firefox2) to version 9 and they're working fine. However, when I open flash files locally in the standalone player, it's version 8. I've tried deleting the player exe from the Macromedia/flash/players folder and then running the latest installer again, but if it has installed the version 9 standalone player, I certainly can't find it. I'd be very grateful if someone could either tell me where on my system it's likely to be, or failing that where I can download it. Thanks.

Flash Vid Player Works Only In Windows
hey everyone. I am going to go out on a limb and start very general. I have a flash site i am about done with. It utilizes AJAX and flash. Bottom line is that the user invokes a flash player to show a video after clicking on the HTML video link he/she wants to see. Affter clicking, the swf (with video player) is embeded to the HTML dynamically. The issue i am having is that the user CAN scrub and interact with the video player on a windows computer (firefox or IE) but not on a mac. i think it may have to do with the dynamic html content, but first i thought i would ask around the forum to be sure it is not my player. I scripted the player myself, so it is not a Macromedia "default", persay...any thoughts or insight on the mac architecture to help pin this down?

Safari For Windows, Is Flash Player Available For It?

Windows Media Player In Flash
I know how to embed windows media player into a html doc but is there any way to do this in flash?

Is there a way to stream video in flash without embeding WMP?

Windows Media Player In Flash Mx
We want to display some very large videos on our website. The problem is that we don't have a Macromedia Flash Communication server, so we can't stream the video to our clients.

Instead we have a Windows Media Server, and in the past we have always used the default windows media player to stream our videos with a .asx file that linked back to our servers.

Is it possible to include the windows media player in a flash mx website? Therefore we could use the windows media player to play our videos

thanks in advanced!

Flash Player In Safari For Windows
I am trying to test my flash site in the Safari for Windows browser. I do not think I have the right plugin - I got it from the link below that was shown on the Apple site, however there is no indication on the page that the plugin that can be downloaded is for Safari.
Can anybody help with this?

Flash Player Linux And Windows Any Differences?
I have the following code,

var somObj=getChildByName("E"+evt.target.name);
somObj.transform.colorTransform=new ColorTransform(1, 1, 1,1,11,66,234,1);

This works great in Windows. Changes the color of the object.

But today I tested it under linux and the color isn't changed.

What can be the reason?

Focusing Browser Windows From Flash Player
Hey all,

I searched for a post along these lines and no cigar.

My problem is this:

I have a full-screen Flash presentation with a bunch of links to websites. Problem is, after the first browser window is opened, all other browser windows appear invisibly behind the projector. In other words, the full-screen presentation is stealing focus.

I hope this is an easy one... Any ideas?

Flash Player 7 Install Requires IE 6 Restart (in Windows XP)?
Hi All,

I am a professional web developer who is always trying to push the envelope for my clients. One of the ways I do this is my encouraging them to use Flash technology in their web sites.

The previous version(s) of the Flash Player would install seamlessly on versions of Internet Explorer since version 5, at least. So if a user did not have the Flash Player installed, or if they had an old version, and required a newer version to run the Flash content on a web page, the Flash player would "automagically" install and the Flash movie on the web page would simply start playing. THe users had to click "OK" once on a security warning, and then it just worked. I am certain that I have witnessed this "seamless install" on Flash Player versions 4, 5, and 6 on Windows NT, 2000, and XP running IE 5, 5.5, and 6.

From what I have seen, it seems as if the most recent version of the Flash Player is incapable of this "seamless install" as previous versions were. It seems that invariably, users are required to close all open Internet Explorer windows before the Flash Player seven will run any Flash content whatsoever. It doesn't matter if the machine had a previous version of the Flash Player, or if they are installing Flash Player 7 on a brand new machine that has never had any version of the Flash Player on it before. Also, it doesn't matter if some IE window is running (or attempting to run) some Flash content on a web page while the latest Flash Player is installed either or not.

It seems as if the Flash Player 7.x ALWAYS requires an IE restart (not a machine restart, just closing all IE windows) after being installed. I have witnessed this on multiple machines. The worst thing about it is that any JavaScript-based Flash detection scripts you may have implemented will actually detect that the user has version 7 of the Flash player installed! But unless the users has closed ALL IE windows, Flash movies will not load properly or at all. The result is that there is an empty space on the web page instead of the movie that should be playing.

This is upsetting to me because a huge advantage that the Flash Player 6 had over other "browser plug-in" technologies (or the choice of using no plug-ins at all) was that the install process was fast and completely painless on the most widely used platform/browser combinations in use. It just worked, even for average Joe User who used his computer for nothing but Hotmail. It is my understanding that any other platform/browser combinations (such as Win/Mozilla, or Mac/Safari) have always required a browser restart after Flash Player install. But most "average" customers are using Windows/IE, so the overall impact was therefore minimized.

If the experiences I have been seeing are just "the way it is" with the new version of the Flash Player, then Macromedia, and indeed all of us, have a much "harder sell" when trying to get worried clients to adopt and embrace what readers of this post know is some of the best software in the history of the Internet.

Has anyone else had these or any other experiences with installing version 7 of the Flash player on Windows IE? Does anyone had links to more info about this? I haven't seen Macromedia address this issue at all. If there is a known reason for this I would really like to know what that is. Perhaps it is a "problem" with some Windows Security Patch or something. (??)

Sorry for the long post.

Flash Visualizations (like In Windows Media Player Or Winamp)
I recently found out how to do a flash based visualization, such as you likely have seen in Winamp or Windows Media Player. Here's a link to what i got going so far:
http://www.bloo.us/mixer/visual.htm
It's pretty simple so far, and i was surprised to find it's actually not "that hard", so i'm wondering if anybody has gone farther than me, and could perhaps give me some pointers.
I searched around for visualizations and effects made in flash, to try to learn from those, but i didn't find any. Has anyone encountered/done some flash visualizations at any time?

Hard Times With Windows XP Flash Player Installation
Hi,

Does anybody know why my browser (IE 6.0.2900, Windows XP SP2) just absolutely refuses to let flash get installed? I have tried everything I know and it seems that it can't get around some permission problem with either Active X and/or Java settings. Any help is appreciated...all I want to do is to have a basic flash player in my browser so that I can play some youtube and other interesting video clips. Thanks much in advance...

Flash Player / Windows Projector View Default
When opening a Windows Projector file, the default view dimensions are set to "show all". As a result, when the Player/Projector window is expanded to fit the screen, the Flash content scales up (producing unwanted distortion to bitmap content). I would like to have the projector display the Flash file at 100% instead, so that there is no resizing of the Flash content.

Is there any action script that controls Player/Projector defaults?

The project I'm working on is a sales demo for a software product and I do not trust our sales staff to manually make the adjustment themselves when starting the demo. I would like the Player/Projector settings defined by the Flash file.

Thanks

Can Flash Be Used To Open .wmv Files In Windows Media Player?
have access to Flash MX 2004 Professional and might be described as an "advanced beginner' in the use of ActionScript.

I will be supplying a client with a dvd disc containing several .wmv video/audio files, so this is not an internet streaming application. One simple approach is to just give the client instructions to open a video file in Windows Explorer and view it using a program like Windows Media Player.

And if that's the only .simple approach, it will work. But I was wondering if a "sexier" Flash shell could be built with the client's logo, etc. on it and a button for each .wmv video file. Is there ActionScript code that could be used when a button is clicked on to send the action to a video file and open it in Windows Media Player, instead of having the user click on the file in Windows Explorer? And once the video is closed, the action would return to the Flash shell.

I'm hoping it could be done with Flash Player 7, which would be more widely available than Flash 8.

I've done some studying of the use of .flv files and so forth but wanted to find out if there is a simpler way such as I have described above. If it can't be done as I have envisioned it, someone please say so. Then, I will decide whether to use the non-Flash approach or look at other options.

Any guidance (and code even) will be greatly appreciated.

Bill

Launching Windows Media Player/Quicktime From Flash?

Big Issues With Flash Player
I have a big problem here...more and more people viewing my website are not able to view the menu on the left...the site is in 2 frames...they can see the main area (right side), but they can't see the left area (menu)...the main area was made in a Flash 5 .fla and the menu is made with Flash MX...is this why people are having troubles...very strange problem, but the weird thing is, I have used MX for the menu for a long time now and its only been more recently that I have had more people telling me this.

The site is www.needrealty.com if you want to see what I'm talking about.

If one of you could direct me somewhere I would GREATLY appreciate it!

Flash Player 7 / AS2 Issues?
hello all, i have a slight problem with trying to get a script i made in an earlier version of flash to work with MX2004... the script basically makes a grid of boxes which move dynamically depending on where the mouse is... here's the code :

//setting the grid
xMax = 27;
yMax = 2;
xDist = 25;
yDist = 25;
xCenter = (this.width/2)-14;
yCenter = (this.height/2)+90;
for (y=0; y<yMax; y++) {
for (x=0; x<xMax; x++) {
clip = attachMovie("box", "b"+i, i++);
clip._x = clip.xBase= (x-(xMax-1)/2)*xDist+xCenter;
clip._y = clip.yBase= (y-(yMax-1)/2)*yDist+yCenter;
//stuff below
clip.onEnterFrame = move;
}
}
offset = 100;
k = .19;
damp = .5;
maxDist = 65;
function move() {
//function behaviors
var dx = this._x-_xmouse;
var dy = this._y-_ymouse;
var dist = Math.sqrt(dx*dx+dy*dy);
if (dist<maxDist) {
var angle = Math.atan2(dy, dx);
var tx = _xmouse+Math.cos(angle)*offset;
var ty = _ymouse+Math.sin(angle)*offset;
//spring towards
this.vx += (tx-this._x)*k;
this.vy += (ty-this._y)*k;
}
//spring towards base
this.vx += (this.xBase-this._x)*k;
this.vy += (this.yBase-this._y)*k;
this.vx *= damp;
this.vy *= damp;
this._x += this.vx;
this._y += this.vy;
}

if any of you could shed any light as to why it won't work i would be very grateful.

it won't actually set the grid so far, i don't know if anything else about it dosen't work yet.

Flash Player Issues?
Ok here's the dealio.
I created a flash ad awhile back (1.5 months ago) in CS3. Everything worked great. The client needed it as Version 8. No problem. Sent file, reviewed files .fla, swf. everything worked great.

Now last nite I tried to create a .mov of the file and none of the files work. The .fla previews fine, but when I try to play the .swf or .mov file it's just the first frame (I have my scene set-up with movieclips).

I dunno did I screw something up in the publish settings? Is there a new version of Flash Player that I downloaded since then that is screwing it up? I'm totally lost and frustrated.

I even went as far as to find the backed-up version of my flash movie from awhile back, and it's doing the same thing.

Any help greatly appreciated

Flash 8 Player Issues
I have a script that I used in an older version of a site. I am now tweaking and adding, and want to publish the new version in flash 8. However, i'm getting some unwanted results when i publish in flash 8 rather than flash 6. Can anyone have a look and tell me why?!

Thanks!

Flash Player 7 Issues
ello

I'm developing a game in flash version 7 using Flash 8 professional. Now I've been happily developing it for a while, testing it through the standalone player (version 9) and recently copied it across to our test rig which runs player 7.0 r19.

The problem is even though the whole time I've been compiling the movie as version 7, when it runs in flash player 7 it produces some sporadic bugs which never occurred when running in version 9.

The game is currently 5000 lines of code and the bugs are inconsistent so it'd take too long to try and riddle out the bugs on this forum, but an example of one is my WobbleClip class, which just takes a movie clip and animates a wobble on the clip to a target value. This works on some occasions and doesn't on others

Are there any known issues caused by changes made to the flash player, specifically concerning AS2 and versions 7-9?

the project is heavily dependent on intervals

Really need digging out of a hole here, looking through the code it all looks valid and there's a lot to trawl through!

Flash Player 10 Issues
Hi,

I've run into a few problems when trying to compile swfs for Flash Player 10. I write code that works perfectly in Flash Player 9, but as soon as I run it in version 10 it doesn't work. Please see the example below and let me know if you know what's going on. Basically I load in an image, then use the copyPixel method to cut it up into squares to put in idividual MovieClips...

Code:

package {
   import flash.display.*;
   import flash.events.*;
   import flash.net.*;
   import flash.geom.*;
   import flash.text.TextField;

   [SWF(width="600", height="400", backgroundColor="#CCCCCC", framerate="40")]
   public class Testr extends Sprite{

      private var loader:Loader;
      private var mc:MovieClip;

      public function Testr():void{
         loader = new Loader();
         mc = new MovieClip();
         loader.load(new URLRequest("http://www.google.com.au/intl/en_au/images/logo.gif"));
         mc.addChild(loader);
         addChild(mc);
         mc.blendMode = BlendMode.ERASE;
         mc.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, chkLoaded);
      }
      private function chkLoaded(e:Event):void{
         if(e.currentTarget.width > 200) {
            mc.removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, chkLoaded);
            for(var i:uint = 0; i < 16; i ++){
               for(var j:uint = 0; j < 8; j ++){
                  var tmp:MovieClip = new MovieClip();
                  tmp.x = i * 26;
                  tmp.y = j * 26;

                  var cropClip:Bitmap;
                  var imageBMP:BitmapData = new BitmapData(mc.width, mc.height);
                  imageBMP.draw (mc, new Matrix());
                  var imageBMPData:BitmapData = new BitmapData(mc.width, mc.height);

                  imageBMPData.copyPixels (imageBMP, new Rectangle(i * 25, j * 25, 25, 25), new Point(0,0));
                  cropClip = new Bitmap(imageBMPData);
                  tmp.addChild(cropClip);
                  addChild(tmp);

Flash MP3 Player Issues
I recently built a Flash MP3 player for a site based on a tutoral I found. This is my first Flash app.

I've been having issues with the load time on the MP3s I'm useing. Sometimes the song loads up right away and sometimes it just stalls at loading. For some reason it didnt work in FF then worked in IE then still didnt work in FF and I releaded the IE page and it didnt work again. On another computer it wasn't working in FF, then I reloaded the page and it worked just fine. I've tried clearing the cache and it lagged on me again.

The MP3 is externaly linked. This shouldn't make any difference in how it's loaded, should it? Is there anyway to speed up the loading of this MP3 file or start preloading it some how?

If it helps, the player is based on this tutorial...link

Couple days ago I installed Flash Tracer http://www.sephiroth.it/firefox/ which allows you to trace() directly on firefox. That works just great. Part of getting that to work is installing the Debug version of the Adobe Flash Player. So I went to the adobe site and got the latest copy (you know is the debug version when you right click and see the word Debugger at the bottom of the right click menu).

New urls wont open in Firefox ??? How come??? In IE and Opera works fine. So now I have to browse Flash site in IE just to be able to click on links

Flash Player 6 And 7 Compatibility Issues
I am developing a game to run in a client / server setup. Im using Java Flash Remoting ( openAMF & ASTranslator ). The client machines will be running featherLinux and launching the player units in the Flash Player 6 ( GFlashPlayer by Macromedia ). The problem I am having is that I developed the game in Flash MX 2004 using Flash 7.

The first initial problem I had was that any dynamic text fields were not displaying the text on FP6, but worked fine in FP7. I figured out that FP6 requires the dynamic text boxes to link the character outlines( textbox properties->characters->select the character the text box will be displaying )

But I am now finding some other weird problems. For example the game dabs cards based on a number call ( bingo ), but when I activate the dab ( its a movie so frame 1 is blank and frame 2 contains the dab ). The dab will not display on FP6, but on FP7 it works fine. I was wondering if anybody knows of any known compatibility issues and resolutions for them.

I know FP6 is flakey in some aspects, but macromedia has not released ( nor plans to from what I hear ) a FP7. We cannot use the plugin because it has to run in a standalone player for deployment purposes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Flash Player Performance Issues...
Hey Guys,

For my final year project I have undertaken the following task:

Generate an intuitive and thoroughly interactive browseing experience for a large image database. (sound boring but I have an *AWESOME* design )

The database is 4500 images so i'm using some techniques which i'm keeping hush at the moment to display them...

All the images have a thumbnail, say 15x15 or 20x20, ALL of them need to be loaded at the start...

Im looking at the moment for any performance issues that anyone may know of when it comes to huge datasets such as this...

*ANY* help, pointers, experience, examples much appreciated...

Cheers

Flash Player 8 Compatibility Issues?
This isn't about using Flash 8 as much as swfs published in Flash 6 and 7 not working properly on machines with the Flash 8 plugin. Are there known issues with this and/or known solutions?

Sorry if this is vague - I'm looking for some guiding principles more than a specific solution.
