Hello there!

Im working on a flash movie and i want to do the following

1) to edit the text - using an xml-file
2) When the text is done i want to have only one .swf file that i can
put on my website, so that vistors worldwide only have to download 1
file containing both flash slide/sequence and the text that i have edited. The swf file should be non-XML dependent after i edited the XML file

I already figured out how to display the contents of my XML file in my flash movie.

Can anybody help me with this?

I would like to edit the movies to include our company name, unfortunately each letter of the words are shapes. Is there a way to edit these shapes and make them different letters? Converting Text To A Shape
In order to apply a shape tween to text, you have to break the text apart to convert it to a shape. Is it possible to do this at runtime with ActionScript, rather than in the CS3 tool?

The reason is that I'd like to be able to load up a clip containing a shape tween animation that affects text I set dynamically at runtime. If there is another way to accomplish that goal I'd be happy to hear it.

Help With Converting AS1 Scrolling Text Box To AS2
Hi there,

I began my site using AS1.
However once I got to putting up my photo gallery, and realizing that I wanted to do it with XML, I changed my publishing settings over to AS2.
Everything worked fine, except for this scrolling text box that you will find attached.

Is there somebody out there who could help me make the code for it AS2 compliant?
As well, I would love to make it load dynamically as it will be on my home section and will be my blog.

Converting To Button = Bad Text
Hi,

I'm trying to create a button with static text on top of it. The text is perfectly clear, perfectly positioned, fff text. However, after I convert the text and a rectangle upon which it sits into a button the text goes a bit fuzzy. Does anyone know why? More importantly, does anyone know how to fix this?

I'm trying to draw a star in flash and luckily the Wingdings font has this. But as this movie is intended for distribution, not everyone will have this font. Is there a way of turning text into a shape?

Converting Dynamic Text To Bitmap
I've built a two row stock ticker that runs from constatntly updated XML files but it locks up the processor on anything below 1.5ghz.

My suspicions are that as Flash only uses the processor (not the video card) and renders text as vector information I simply have too many points to move at a time.

So I was thinking, can I convert the dynamic text field instances to bitmaps on the fly much as you can in director?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[F8] Converting Text Strings To Characters
I want to create a movie clip that selects a random text string from an array and then animates that string as it follows a motion guide. The path of the string is going to have multiple 90 degree bends, however, and I want the text strings to smoothly follow the bend and be oriented to the path. I think the strings will have to be broken down into individual letters (characters) to follow the bend.

I think I can write the code to have the movie clip select the string, fade it onto the stage and begin moving it along the guide (although if anyone has suggestions for this I'd be happy to hear them).

My main question is how to break the text string into individual characters to follow the curve?

I need to do this for a few hundred words so it needs to be an actionscript 2 file that will work for any text string called from the arrays

[F5] Editing Text After Converting To Symbol?
Hello,

I am new to Flash (using Flash 5 specifically) and just started using it about 10 days ago. I have progressed quite a bit in that time, but it has been a steep learning curve. I come from an extensive Photoshop and Illustrator background, but had never used Flash before.

I am designing a flash website, and I want to have some side-scrolling text in my flash movie. I would like to be able to edit this text at least once a month, and completely change what it says. If I am correct, it appears that if I want to animate my text and have it scrolling, I must convert the text to a symbol first, before I can animate it. So, I converted the text to a symbol, and I was then able to animate it the way I wanted. AFTER doing this, when I try to select the symbol text, right click and click EDIT, I am unable to edit the text (change what the text says)..

Is there a way to do this? Or must I delete the old text symbol, recreate the text from scratch and reconvert it to a symbol and reanimate it all over again, each time I want to change what it says? I am hoping there is some way to edit it once I have set up my animation of it.

how is this done? i have buttons in my movie, i have text on a seperate layer that is above the buttons, and the text can be highlighted... I don't want it to be highlightable, nor do i want it to interfere with the button.

Converting Text To Movie Clip
I'm having trouble converting text or anything I make in flash into a movie clip. If I make the same thing in Photoshop, add it to the library, I can make it work, but this adds a lot of time.

Simple Example: trying to make text fade in or out, the text just shows up as 100%, if I do the same text in Photoshop, save it as a jpg and bring it over, it works fine. Am I missing something?

Converting Input Text Into Graphics?

I'm trying to see if this is even possible with Flash, I think it may work with either Flash + XML or PHP, but I have little experience in those two, I have an idea of what to do, just not a clear way of how to get there ......

What I am trying to do is convert text in an input box (either typed on the fly or copy/pasted) and have that output into 1px by 1px HEX# values in a mosaic tile effect in a second dynamic box (or possibly even exported as a .gif or .jpg) .. so basically, replacing each letter for a color one by one left to right.

I know that I need to give HEX# color values to both upper and lower case letters, as well as number, the space value, and punctuation .. so about 70 different values. so would that be an array in php? or XML?

As far as exporting goes, I heard that something called GD lib can be used to create graphics through PHP.... but not sure on how that can work with Flash possibly

Any ideas on this? or if it is even possible?

I have dynamically loaded a text file into flash. In this text file, let say it contains the following message:

"Hi! How are you doing? : D I've just got this great game! : P. Blah Blah Blah"

I want flash to render out a smiley that is a movieclip in the library instead of : D and : P. Can anyone tell me how to do it or link me to a tutorial? Thanks.

I'm trying to call a URL with a variable. I'm loading text into the variable, but need to convert the text into a format acceptable for yahoo maps...

So I need to convert spaces to +, etc. Is there a simple way to do this? Or a way to convert normal text with spaces and other characters into a format that yahoo or google maps will recognize?

Converting A PDF To A Flash FLA File Without Converting To An Image First?
Basically, I'm building a digital catalogue that runs off a CD and uses a Flash 'page turning component' to display the pages. Certain pages will have links that use Flash's Fscommand call to open Word and Excel documents.

Has anyone got any bright ideas of how to Convert a PDF to a Flash FLA file without converting to an image first?

I know I can open a PDF in Photoshop, save as a PNG or JPG and then import this into Flash, however the quality isn't brilliant. If you use a hi-res image, then you get a hi-res file size...

Currently, the best way I have found, is to open the PDF in Illustrator, then export it as a SWF. Illustrator converts all text to shapes and you end up with a small SWF, yet great quality when displayed in larger sizes. As I'm currently using a page turning flash component that loads SWF files, I need the quality to be good for the 'Zoom' function.

I've found an Illustrator script that will do the hard work via a 'batch' process, so I can take a 100 page PDF and convert the whole lot to 100 SWF files while I drink tea and 'look busy' and read a magazine, but the problem I have is that I need to add a layer of buttons to several of the SWF files to add a little functionality....

I do have a SWF to FLA decompiler which does a good job, however because Illustrator turns everything into shapes, the decompiler does the same and you end up with thousands of files in the library.... Plus there are a lot of error messages when the file is first loaded...

Many layers are masked, (for some reason without a fill), so if you publish the decompiled file straight away, you just get a blank file. Once you go through and fill the masks needed, it shows when you publish, but this really is a lot of work and I've had a few pages that show when you open the SWF file, but don't show when the SWF is called into the page turning file.... Hmmm....

So in short, I'd like to take a PDF and convert it to a FLA file, add a layer of buttons and publish as a SWF file....

Anyone got any 'Pearls of Wisdom'?

I imported this list in Flash. I would like to cut and paste each line into an MC or button. Is there a way to accomplish this?

Converting An Number In A Text File To A Variable
I'm tried this a hundred ways, and can't seem to get it to work. I'm trying to get my flash file to read a number from an external text file (in form: &var0100=4&) and have the flash file go to a specific frame number based on this variable. This code works if I import it into a text file, but I can't get it to take what's in the text file and convert it to a variable. Here's my following code:

I'm having this issue that is driving me nuts.
When I create a button, my other graphic objects get messed up and visually transform into that button. P.S. this only happens after I save the file and open it again. Only then I see that it's all gone Pete Tong :S

Is there a way i can convert values in text fields to a document, maybe like a Word Document or a PDF? the values entered into the Flash Text Fields are stored in a mySQL Database, but is there a way i can output those values as a hard digital copy?

Text Distortion When Converting From QuickTime To Flash
I am converting a QuickTime video to Flash format. Both have the same pixel dimentions - 200 x 150 - so I don't need to resize. I am using the default "flash 8 - high quality" settings.

However, there is some large text on the opening screen of the video that looks fine before conversion, but is distorted after conversion. Any ideas how to fix?

Edited to add that I am using the Flash 8 Video Encoder.

Importing Strings Into A Text File And Converting Them In The Movie For Use.
I have a text file, in that text file there are several strings that look like this.

&&S1=[room,250,1]&&
&&S2=[room,252,1]&&
&&totalRooms =2&&

Any they go on like that. Now what I am wanting to do is to load this text file and convert the strings into items that can be used in the movie.

The code I have tried using for this is

Now I was expecting this to make the S1 into T1 with the information from text file. Converting Text-based Items In An Array To MovieClips
I've been trying to find an alternative to my problem, but all seems to no avail. The situation is the following:

I have an array which I fill at the very beginning of my code:

Further down, I have a function that removes an item randomly (can be anywhere in my array) and immediately adds it back at the end of the array:

It all works fine and I normally have quite random arrays, but now comes the part where I add them onto my stage; the part that does not work, because the items in my array are no class/displayobjects/movieclips (I guess it's the first one):

All I know is that it does not work.

For your information, making a DisplayObject/class-filled-array from the very beginning and adding them onto stage works, but it's then impossible to remove an item out of the array (splice) and adding it back at the end. The result here (again) is that I can't add it to my stage due to the fact that the item I just re-added is not a class, but mere text. Therefore my title =D

so anyway, i want to make a calendar using datechooser component. i already know how to write to the text file using php, and using listeners etc. but now i want to read from a text file.

my problem is that i dont know how to convert the variable in the file to a date for my calendar.

i would also like to know what the "add" means in the following script:

i have an example file attached, its like the one i posted in flash 8, but i forgot to add the text file (stupid me).

Retriveing Date Variables From Text File/ Converting Strings To Dates
Hi,

I'm trying to read date variables from an external text file. I'm using the LoadVars method and it is working fine for regular string variables. I'm running into trouble trying to convert some of those strings into date variables so I can compare the current date to the targetDateX variable from the text file. I'm working on a countdown timer for a list of different times/dates. It will display the time left until the first event, then after that event the time left until the second event. I'm running the code in a for loop and everything is working except being able to convert the string with format (yyyy,mm,dd,hh,mm) into a date variable- I've attached a sample of where I'm having trouble.

Clouds Go On And On
How could I make clouds image or anything - keep scrolling so they look like they are passing you by slowing but it loops and you dont notices.

Is this Actionscript. and how would you cut or get have an image like that. - that's would scroll but the flash size of the SWF is 500Pixels - so I'm assuming that would be a very large image to do that.

Hello, I was hoping someone could help me, I want to create an animation that has clouds randomly flouting in the background.
I’ve seen a few tutorials that have snow which fall downwards and I was hoping if anyone knew of a tutorial that instead of having the object going from top to bottom went from left to right.

Hey, it's kind of simple and I think it's been done before...but I kind of like it anyway. I got inspired after seeing the opal cloud experiments in Joshua Davis's Flow presentation. I'm not sure how he did it but I think this comes kind of close.

I'm sorry if the code looks kind of familiar. Parts of it are based on Kirupa's grassy field tutorial (if you want me to take down the source just let me know).

This is literally my first work with actionscript so I think the code is a bit akward. If any of you have any ideas on how I can improve this then that would be great.

Just a note, if you take out the (i=a) and replace it with the value in the WHILE statement above, the animation will freeze on one frame. Kind of handy for screen shots and what not.

I used a circle with a radial gradient (one slider a solid color the other a solid color with the alpha set to zero) for the movie clip.

Clouds On The Sky
I´m doing a cdrom for a client, and my idea is to make a sky as a background and some clouds moving at the top of the movie.

As it is a cdrom, the file size doesn´t matter.

first I must get some realistic clouds, but I didn´t get any nice tut for it.
After should make the clouds to move with AS so the movement is smooth.

Any help anyone?

Hi everyone,
I am looking for a tutorial on how to make clouds move. Now before anyone tells me to do a search I have. I have looked all over and all the posts are from people who give half hearted answers and links to urls that do not work anymore. Basically no one helps.
