Flash :: Dhtml Javascript Communicating With Swf

Howdy,
I saw on maximonline.com a flash movie playing over HTML where i could view the underlying HTML through the transparent background of the swf.
cool effect!!!

I thought that if I placed a swf with a transparent background in a div tag with a z-index higfher than the HTML page,..that I could get that same result as maximonline.com.

nope. the <div> didn't work. any suggestions?????

Can anyone give me the code to allow me to overley DHTML menus on swf movies please. I have tried to search this on the net... with great success with IE but stuck with usability in FireFox - The menu sits infront of the IE movie... but behind on the Firefox version. Please help me!!!

How can I keep radio buttons and drop down stuff from poking through my flash that is supposed to be on top of everything in a web page??

DHTML Over SWF
Ok....I use a DHTML menu maker and recently discovered the workaround to ensure my menus show up OVER the SWF.

i.e. inserting wmode="opaque" versus a color....

I am a FLASH noob (gawd, this is a brave new world :), but is there a way to precode a template this way as the site I am building will probably have about 85 SWF galleries and it would be nice not to hand code each one.

Is there any way to have layers appear over a Flash movie? To make matters worse I need this to work in both IE 5+ and Netscape 4.7+!!!
I have created a drop down Nav but it is hidden by the Flash.
Any suggestions?

Exporting As Dhtml
I have a problem, I am trying to put together a series of animations from gifs into the dreamweaver timeline but I can't seem to get each one to disapear then the next one start - know what I mean. If I had success then I could have made my first DHTML animation in dreamweaver - anyway - I can't find a way :-(

So I was wondering if I did the whole animation in flash - could I then find a way to convert it into dhtml?

I'm developing a website and at the top there is a DHTML drop down menu, then at the bottom of the mneu I have a flash animation. But the problem is that when the menu displays the subsections, I can't see them because the flash animation is on top.

Is there any work around besides the fact of may be designing the drop down menu in Flash? I will like to use the DHTML version of this menu.

I don't know if this is the right place to be asking this, but thought I'd give it a shot. We have a client who wants dhtml drop-down menus on their home page and we have a Flash movie directly under where the menus need to drop. Problem is, the menus do not work over the Flash layer - they drop behind the Flash movie. Now, I am not a programmer, but the programmers I work with say it cannot be done. Anybody done this or have an example or workaround for this?

DHTML And Flash
I have a page that I am creating that uses a DHTML popup menu (created by Fireworks) for the navigation and has a flash "commercial" directly under it in another table. The problem is that when I roll over the menus the menus show up underneath the flash movie. This does not happen when I have a regular image in the "commercial" area only with the flash.

Do I need to solve this by using DHTML on the entire site and defining layer order or is there another way to solve this.

Any help would be appreciated

I'm trying to get a DHTML drop down menu to work with a page that has flash movies in it. My problem is that when the menu meets up with the flash movies, it always appears behind them.

Is it possible to have DHTML appear on a layer above flash??

My menus I bought from ******* and I created drop down menus which are a Dhtml ... they work fine in the PC world. The Mac users... I have problems... Here is the deal..... Look at this site...

Now go to "members" this is actually a flash page embedded ... this is when the problem occurrs.,.. now try to look at the drop downs under restaurant... they disappear... it use to do this on the PC until a tip told me to made the wmode transparent. I did this and problem solved ont he PC but now the MAC has these issues... This is on the new version of Mac the OX 10 I think... Anyone have any ideas??? Does anyone have another type of drop down that would look like this that would not do the problem?

My second issue is that a board member of this site said all the pictures come up blurry for him... I deleted his temp files over the phone and they still are blurry.. any ideas... everyone else seems to work fine and he is on a del over a dialup but that shouldn't do it... The files are not the large... I am thinking he pulled the site up while I was ftping and he got it caught in something... should I delete his cookies?? Any ideas anyone...

Actionscript To DHTML ?
Hi Guys,

As melon-scratchers go, this one's a honey-doodle!

I have one page, with a flash file on the left and a div on the right. When the user hovers over buttons in the flash file, I want the contents of the div to instantly change without a page refresh.

I'm comfortable using DHTML, where appropriate, but I can't figure out how I would send this information out of flash without a page refresh, and how my Javascript could detect that a hover has occured. Would it require javascript in my actionscript?

Any help is very much appreciated.

Ok, i know this is a FAIRLY common problem, but nothing I've found works!

Problem: Flash is on top of all HTML

I've tried the whole "wmode=transparent" thing, that doesn't work. I found some kind of garbled Javascript code (on this site) that doesn't work either.

I'm really getting frustrated with this.

Windowless Swf W/o Dhtml
Is the only way to have a windowless movie "fly over" html text is to use DHTML layers? By fly over, I mean how in example in the "Making Flash Movies Transparent" tutorial the ad flys over the John Ashcroft ad.

DHTML AND FLASH
Hi, i'm making a home work for my web class and im really confused about something...

I have a Dynamic HTML menu set up as an include file, but immidiatetly below it I placed a Flash movie.

Here is the problem...when I rollover the dhtml menu it opens down to show up the submenus but they GO underneath the flash movie....

I have tried everything from making different layers in dreamweaver to place my dhtml (include file) to making a send to back command in dreamweaver...

I just want my DHTML menu to open on top of the flash movie so the submenus arent interrupted by it...

I think this is something I cannt not unless i duplicate the menu in flash and make it a whole flash movie

is there anyway to get around the cross-browser limitations mentioned in kirupas DHTML in flash tutorial (http://www.kirupa.com/developer/flash5/dhtmlflash.htm)? Z-indexing my flash movies doesn't seem to go over too well with firefox or netscape.

I have a site that I am working on and I am using a Flash file that Firestorm9527 created for me. The problem is that I would like to put the file in a table, and have the drop down menus come out side of the table. I read the tutorial on DHTML, but I didn't find much in the way of what I was looking for. Is there any way to make this happen? If you need the files, I can simply post them on my site (we aren't using them in the current site I am designing it for) and let you take a look. Anyway, any help people can give would be great.

I'm working on a web project for a client. We are developing a website that is heavily dependent on search engines and "corporate" type clients. The website offers a service that larger corporations, universities, and other organizations would use. I am debating whether to use Flash or DHTML. Are there any disadvantages to using Flash for a website? Do search engines read it the same?

I would appreciate any advice. I am naturally leaning toward DHTML but my client prefers flash.

Flash Under DHTML?
Hey guys,

I'm very new to flash and I am trying to make a small flash object to put on a page. I want it to be moveable with DHTML. So I have the little DHTML window that can be moved all over no problem.

The problem I have is when I <Emmbed> the flash object it gets precedence over the DHTML. I heard somewhere that there was something you could do to the Flash object to make it go under the DHTML. I tried messing with z-order on the DHTML but it didn't change anything.

I'm pretty stupid about Flash so far so if anyone could help that would be great.

Complex Situation With DHTML
You might well have seen gif's on peoples site that fly around or are dragable over the top of content. This is pretty easy to do with DHTML.

I need to do this with a flash movie. I can layer the flash on the top of the page and starting placement is pretty straight forward.

However the problem with moving the flash around the page out foxes me. IE doesn't interpret clicks on the flash movie.

I'm not sure the best way to go about it, 3 options spring to mind, but each has it's draw backs.

1. Layering a transparent gif on top of the flash but I can imagine running into troubles when getting the relationship between the flash movie area and the gif area.

2. Creating the flash movie the entire size of the page, then dragging the object within the flash. Probably the easiest solution, apart from if the user decides to select some of the HTML underneath and finds that they end up selecting the flash movie instead.

3. Calling JS functions from the Flash. Sounds easy but the flash movie doesn't know it's relative position on the page. Also as soon as it moves 1 pixel the flash movie will escape from the mouse down.

Any ideas?

MPEG, DHTML, And Flash? Can It Be Done?
Hey everybody. I need some real help here. I'm working on a Kiosk and most of it (almost all of it) has been done in Flash without a problem. However, I'm now told that a video has to be included. I know that "good" video can't be imported into Flash, but I have an idea... i just dont know how to make it work.

If I have the Flash movie loaded in a fullscreen browser window, then I was thinking I could use DHTML Layers. I'd make one layer where the Flash movie would be on, and another where the video (and maybe play/stop controls) would be. The video layer would be behind or hidden for most of the time. Then I when I need the video to appear, I would make the layer visible (superimposed) ontop of the Flash movie... using some Actionscript with a button in Flash.

I'm not sure if this could be done, and I haven't had any luck. I really need some help. If anybody knows how to do this or any other way... please letme know.

i've got an asp page with a dhtml menu include at the top, and a flash movie right below it.

the flash movie covers the dhtml menus entirely when they expand. does anyone know of a good resource that might help me solve this issue... i know its not specifically flash's fault, i'm just not aware of any good dhtml boards. is this just a lost cause?

i've tried putting the movie on its own layer, but because the menus are includes, i'm confused as to how the stacking is working.

Dhtml Type Scroller
I want to make a little 400x200 window that will loop scroll some images
from right to left.

However, I want to be able to mouse over an image and pause the loop.

I would use a DHTML scroller but I can't place it where I want it because I
use flexible tables in my web page so if someone has a different screen rez,
the scroller will end up hiding stuff.

This way, I can put the flash in it's own cell and it wont cover important
stuff.

Since I'm not familiar with action script or javascript I am looking for
maybe a walk through or something.

It's been a long time since I've used flash (and it was v4 when I did)
But now I have MX and the action script window is a lot more advanced.
Before, the most action script I did was using the expression editor (was
that the name?)and it was only for buttons used in a movie loader. (basic
goto and play stuff)

Using DHTML Menus With Flash

I have a problem. I am working on a website that has a DHTML navigation system and the main pages are in Flash. Now the problem is that the Flash is onto onto the top layer as a plugin and the DHTML menu items go behind the Flash plugin and are not visible. If I embed the Flash instead of using the plugin, it does not work on Netscape. Any idea how I can keep the DHTML menu items on top of the Flash Plugin?

DHTML Layer Over Flash?
Trying to get a drop down dhtml layer containing a flash movie to appear in front of flash content in an html page, like those floaty flash ads you see everywhere.

Never actually seen this technique appearing over another flash movie. Is it possible to have a layer appear over the top of flash?

Tried changing z order but does nothing, even if the background flash movie is put into a layer of it's own and moved down the z order below the drop down layer.

Flash And DHTML Layers For IE - HELP

So, I've run into the common problem where DHTML dropdown menus fall behind a flash swf file sitting in the HTML.

I found the tutorial with the title above on flashkit and thought I was golden. Not so. Now the swf file doesn't show up at all on a PC in IE.

At first I pointed the javaScript to the swf in a different directory. That didn't work, so I put the swf in the same directory and used this code the tutorial shows:

Unfortunately, I don't have a PC at home, so I've been having my PC friend test it on his computer. But it totally works on my Mac in IE, Netscape and Safari.

Lastly, I'm using SSIs to import the DHTML for my dropdowns. They have a z-index of 20. The js file from the tutorial has the flash file with a zindex of 0. Could this have something to do with my problem?
