Hello, Guys
I am a new comer when it comes to Flash. I paid for and downloaded the Tab Menu by AdrianTNT.com for use on my website being developed. I know how to edit the XML file to change colors and the size of the menu. The menu seems to work fine but I want to edit the file and create a new SWF file with a different font size and shape of navigation bar. I have Flash 8 but I need some tutorial type information so that I can make those changes to the menu.

Please help me out of this jam.

Problem Editing Pre-made Flash File
I'll be the first person to admit that I am a complete retard when it comes to using flash related anything. Which is why I'm here.

I am unsure whether or not my problem is related to ignorance of the program or an error not on my part, so maybe someone out there can tell me.

A friend of mine purchased a flash layout (http://www.templatemonster.com/website-templates/5910.html) for her new website and wanted me to change the main logo and the menu buttons to fit her own. However when I open the file's by either right clicking>open with or by opening Flash itself and then importing, it completely loses the glint going across her blades and the background music shown in the link above.

I've done everything I can think of, but nothing seems to be preventing it from losing the music/graphic and having odd looping issues immediately upon just opening up the file.

I used the reccomended version of flash as stated on the website.

My friend really want's her layout up and running in flash. What am I doing wrong?

I appreciate any help that can be given!

Editing A 'Flash Menu Labs' File
I have grabbed the demo of Flash Menu Labs - which I must say is very impressive for a 'non-coder' like myself. I will be buying the product when the tax cheque comes in, but in the meantime, I'd like to use a flash menu I have created.

It (quite reasonably) does not allow links to be put into its code until you have purchased the software. I was wondering if there was a way I can do this manually so I can still use the menu? The publish command creates code for head and body, and also creates a menu.fml file (flash menu labs im assuming). How can I code in teh links manually?

Why Is Editing Flash MX File In 2004 Is Damn Slow?
I just purchased MX2004 recently and im trying to migrate some of my files over to it from the standard MX version. MY trouble is that whenever I edit something or double-click anything it takes about 10 seconds to respond - everything is just so slow!

Making A Sound File Smaller Or Editing Sounds Outside Of Flash
I have a sound loop that I would like to use for a site and I would just like to use one small part of the loop. Currently the track is 57 seconds and I just want to use a small part or the loop like ten seconds worth for the FLA file. I know I can edit sound in Flash but it seems like it still loads the whole file and it would be tooo large. How do I edit sounds before I import them into Flash. What program would you recommend using.

Editing A .swf File?
I purchased a template to save time & money, and it came with a generic flash animation in the upper left. I want to replace the 4 pictures they use with relevant ones for my company. The problem is that the author of the template password protected the flash so it can't be modified. It is a .swf file. Is there a way of converting it to .fla or is there a way I can edit it??? I have three .swf files that i need to edit ( the .fla files were lost, and i did not back them up ) All i need to change is a "geturl" command ..
is there a way to edit that???? Like a software i can download .. or a way of hacking the .swf file??

Editing FLA File?

Editing An Existing Swf File...

I just took over doing the company website (the current one can be seen at: http://itasca.ca) and includes a real cool flash menu at the side on certain pages (http://www.itasca.ca/civil.html) I have the SWF file and was able to use Flash Decompiler to extract it to a FLA file but now I get overwhelmed. I need to make a few changes... some URLs and to take out certain components as well. Our office doesn't deal with all the stuff that is listed in this menu... is there an easy way to do this? I could substitute the ones that are not applicable to our office... Editing Stuff From Txt File.
There used to be a tutorial for this awhile back, but I can't find it anymore.

Anyone know how to make it where I can edit a txt file on the host and change it on the flash movie?

What I want to do is this:

There are eight boxes. When you go over any one, different content will appear in the middle. I want to be able to change the content of all eight boxes from an external txt file. Also, on each box there is a name; "Spelly", "Champ", "Xzibit", ect (these are all text). I want to be able to change these as well. The images themselves can stay as they are.

Plus, I am going to have other links (scenes) and I want to be able to change the content on those pages as well with txt file(s).

It'd be perfect if I could just have it all editable through one txt file, but multiple is fine.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Editing Code In A .mxp File, Can It Be Done?
Hi, im using Flash MX 2004.

I downloaded a free beta version of a Drag and Drop Component today, it came with a .mxp file, which i installed, and all seems to be working correctly.

The component makes use of a function called 'dragHandler', there is an example snippet of the code below.

dragHandler(objectToDrag, objectDroppedOn, false);

The function 'dragHandler' is however not contained in the component itself, I cannont find it but it must be somewhere because the component works.

In the Macromedia Extension manager, there is a short description of the component. ill copy and paste a piece of it for reference, as below.

add and adjust the code below to execute commands when your clip is droped.

[CS3] Editing An Image Within A .flv File
Hi all,

I have been asked to update an image inside an .flv file. The image has a simple bubbles rising animation attached to it, but I have been told by a company who sold the flash that the image can be changed quite easily, if done correctly!! Unfortunately, this is all they will tell me as they would like me to pay a large amount just to change an image.

Could someone please help me save lots of dollars :-). I have a basic understanding of flash, but that ends when I am dealing with .flv files. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Basically, what I have is a menu for a webpage with an image inside that menu, with a basic animation attached, I have got so far as actually changing the image, but I cannot seem to include it so the animation remains.

BUGS IN FLASH?

a couple of days back i seemed to have solved the swapdepths problem, but now it seems like i've just opened pandora's box. The moment you try swapping depth of a heavily animating object, it doesnt work at all..the screens has to be refreshed once with swapping another overlapping object. I wonder if this is a bug in flash or im doing it wrong. I am using the attachmovieclip method to duplicate the objects. I have even tried it with DuplicateMC, but the problem remains even with just 2 objects in one depth.
I tried this 2 days back by keeping 2 objects in one depth and it seemed to work fine if the animating objects are light in size..i mean do not eat up much of yr processor.

Does this ghosting and swapdepths problem come when the animationa and scripts are eating up too much of yr processor...doesnt refresh the screen??

Can any one help please????

2 Possible FLASH Bugs
I encountered a problem I understood was a bug back in 1999. But, I thought it would have been cleared up by now. Then, after doing some testing I ran across a second possible existing bug.

1st bug - When you make a text field and assign a character or function like enter key to submit info, the flash will not work properly until it is refreshed or linked (yes it sounds weird, but someone I think here mentioned this was a Flash bug)

2nd bug - So, I went ahead and removed it from my initial page, and then the problem still existed. So I don't know if the 1st reoccurring bug had any impact here, but it may still exist.

What it appears to be, I am using IE 6.0 and Flash MX, is a resize problem. When I initially go to the site with the flash, I can type in the text field and click the buttons. However, as soon as I maximize the browser window the buttons cease to work and I can no longer type in text field unless I refresh the page (yes, it sounds weird)

But that's what it does, same effects with 2 different scenarios.

I keep finding "questionable actions" and can't seem to find any accurate bug lists from Adobe. Does anyone know where that is?
New Bug today: If you use autoformat on your actionscript 3 files, it ruins any metatags by adding a semicolon to the end. For example, I was building a component and had the [Inspectable]'s working and then suddenly it stopped working. It took me quite sometime to realize the semicolon it adds to the end killed all of them.

Flash Bugs?
Just curious, does anyone seem to have problems with flash doing something one time and not doing it with the same movie the next. For instance, I have an eLearning module in which my navigation says _root.circle.gotoAndPlay("fadein"); on everyother slide -- there are ten slides per module and I have made 17 modules so far -- on one slide it doesn't work. Same code as them all, same labels, same everything -- it just doeesn't work.

I just didn't know if people had little idiotic problems with flash like I do occationally

-sometimes the scroll bar on the Timeline randomly disappears and I have no way of scrolling down to my layers, I have to stretch my timeline out.

-sometimes the telltarget code dosen't work I tryed even debugging but the output says it has read the code but it won't play the code.

has anyone has these similar problems?

Flash Bugs
I designed a flash movie that has a loader scene that waits until the movie has been loaded before playing the main scene.  The main scene has only 1 frame that contains a few mouse over buttons.  There is one layer that I used for a movie clip that contains menus for each button.
These menus each have 5 frames. So for 5 buttons that would be 25 frames for this menu movie clip.  The module works GREAT! It shows the appropriate menu when each button is rolled over, and then they dissapear when rolled out.

The problem that I am running into, is that when it is put online, the movie works very well 95% of the time for me (broad band).  I have another person that uses a 28.8 Dialup connection that loads the movie, and when it plays, the menus do not sppear.  The mouse overs change the color of the buttons so I know the mouse overs are working.  But what about the menus?  They aren't appearing.  When they hit the refresh button on the browser, it then works fine.  What could be the problem here??

I also have another move that goes nuts on me.  I created the almost exact same thing, but when the user mouses over a certain image the LARGER view of the image shows in the middle of the module. These larger images are in a movie clip and there are about 20 images in there.  Once the movie loads, the larger images will cycle through from the beginning to the end and repeat itself over and over again in an endless loop.  This ONLY happens 95% of the time.  When the refresh button is clicked on the browser it then works fine.

If anyone has any light to shed on this, please let me know.  Thanks.

Display Variable From File WITHOUT EDITING IT

I was wondering how (or if it's possible) to display a variable declared in a separate swf file. eg. I have a game with a highscore variable called _level0.punteggio and I wan't to display that variable in a different flash file. I don't want to have to edit the original flash file with the variable I want to display. You see, I can't legally edit a .swf file that isn't mine and that I don't have permission to edit (and can't get permission for). I need a way to create a flash file that will call that certain variable I told you about and be able to do something with the variable without editing the file that holds it. If you don't know, ask someone else for me because chances are that any one of you knows way more people who know about actionscript than I do.

[F8] Having Trouble Editing Text From As File
I have attached the source files via download from my server. can anyone tell me what I am missing? As you can see when you mouse over the sun, there is text. I want to do that for each planet, but also make it so there are links in the text.

Can someone tell me how to go about doing this please? My head hurts lol

Tool For Editing FLV File Produced By FCS
We have a system in place using FCS 1.5 that produces FLV files. We use the netstream.send( ) function to embed urls that the player processes in order to synchronize content loading on the page as the video plays. I'm just now learning how all this works.

My problem is that the generated FLV file may need to be edited after the fact. We might want to trim the first 10 minutes or remove sections where there were technical problems with the presenter. I might want to change the timing of the embedded URL values as well.

Are there any commercial FLV file editors out there? Any open source code? I'd prefer not to write something from scratch, and even if I have to I need to understand the FLV file structure.

If anyone has any ideas, feel free to share. Thanks.

Editing CODEBASE Url - Need V.6 Swflash.cab File
Not sure if this is the right forum for this but it's more flash-related than HTML i feel.

I have created a bunch of flash(v.6.65) apps for a client's website which they love and are getting great responses from their customers about. Except this company forgot to mention that all of the store locations don't have flash 6(most are flash 5 and some are even flash 4) and can't surf any site other than their own. This means that they can't just simply go to macromedia.com to update their flash player, and to further complicate the issue they don't want the latest player, they'd rather play it safe and use the Flash 6.65 Plugin.

So I've altered the CODEBASE attribute in the OBJECT tags of the HTML that holds my SWF's to point to a swflash.cab that I'm hosting on their server, but I've only been able to find a swflash.cab file that installs the Flash 7 Plugin. I need one that installs the Flash 6.65 plugin.

Does anyone know where I can get one?

A Warning About Two Flash Bugs
Bugs or eccentricities -- you be the judge.

The first one is simple to describe. If you enter Actionscript manually (expert mode), then be careful about extra spaces if you end up deleting all the script. What I mean is, I used to have something like
some_variable = "whatever";

gotoAndPlay ("SOMEFRAME");

Now in this example, say I delete both lines of script, but leave the line returns untouched. Easy to do, since it certainly looks as if I've cleaned out all the script. But when I click on another frame, I see there's still a little 'a' inside the frame I just left -- in other words, Flash sees the line return and assumes there's actionscript lurking within.

Normally, this shouldn't be a problem. But it was for me. Movie A loaded movie B into a clip; movie B happened to have some of this phantom actionscript on its first frame; when testing the movie (either within Flash or through a browser), a library symbol that did not exist on the stage of either movie would inexplicably appear when movie B was loaded.

Weird, eh? I tried enough combinations of things to conclude that the phantom actionscript was at fault. I deleted it and everything worked. Absolutely bizarre. So be aware these things can happen.

The second problem is something too complicated to describe, so instead I'll just give you the advice. Essentially, Flash appears to have some type of 'complexity limit' per layer. I had multiple instances of the same complex movie clip together on the same layer, and very, very bizarre things started happening. After 90 minutes of weeping and gnashing of teeth, I solved the problem by putting each instance on its own layer.

I know what you're thinking -- I must have missed some other little thing. But I didn't. I checked everything and I mean everything. Three times. There was no reason Flash shouldn't have worked with everything on the same layer, and equally no reason that using multiple layers should've made any difference. But that's the way it was.

So -- in summation -- in my opinion, if you watch out for phantom actionscript leftovers, and don't put multiple instances of complex movie clips on the same layer, you just might save yourself some future tears.

Please post a reply -- anything (even just a smiley) -- so that this thread won't get buried thirty minutes after it's born. Maybe it can even garner a "hot" icon, ensuring that plenty of Flashers will see it. Thanks.

Bugs In Flash MX? Are There Any Patches?
Ive found MX to be very buggy, with the easiest of things.

Ive created a file from an old template which worked fine, then moved the text field without adjusting anything else, now it exports and does not show text!!!

Ive found many a time for it to play up with things like this.

I am using a PC Pentium 4 2Ghz with 512 MB Ram XP Proffessional.

Anyone please help?

2 Bugs In My Flash Game
Hi there

I'm in the process of finishing a Flash game in ActionScript. However, there are two bugs in it:

1) Other enemy tanks explode when only one is hit.

2) The missile follows the direction of the players tank after its
been fired from another position.

I did try the conventional way of aligning missile fire with a
object firing but that didn't succeed, so I came up with this
work around.

It's effective to a degree but it's also a compromise which is
slightly flawed. I'd be grateful if someone showed me how to
do this properly.

Flash Bugs? Has This Happened To Anyone Else?
I've been running into a few bugs working with Flash MX on a web project and am completely frustrated and confused.
For some reason, when my html page containing my swf first loads, some of the elements in in my Flash movie simply fail to load. Then if I click a to a different frame and then return to that same frame, it works fine.
In other words, when it first loads, things don't work properly but after that, it works fine.

Another weird issue: sometimes bitmap images (jpegs) load in as just blurred stripes. I resaved all the images thinking maybe they'd gotten corrupted or something and sometimes the problem goes away, sometimes not.

The movie I'm making is not at all complex. I don't understand why things simply fail to load the first time through.
I've been working in Flash since version 2 or 3 and I feel very confident in the program. But when it comes to bugs like this, I'm at a loss.

Any suggestions?

I want to use floating help panel but it always stretches too far down so I cannot read text from it and I cannot resize it.

2 Bugs In My Flash Game
Hi there

I'm in the process of finishing a game in Flash 5 ActionScript. However, I'm struggling with 2 bugs:

1) when one enemy tank is hit, other enemy tanks explode.

2) The trajectory of the player tanks missile follows the direction
the player tank while the tank is moving.

I did attempt aligning the missile with the position of the tank to appear wherever it was located (but to be independent of the tank after being fired).

After constantly trying and failing to get the desired effect with code from reliable sources, I had to come up with my own workaround. It's mostly effective but slightly flawed.

I'd be grateful if someone showed me how to do it properly. I've attached the relevant Flash file. Many thanks for any help offered.

Questions About Flash Mx / Bugs
2 things, when I export image on my powerbook g4 from flash mx 2004 educational... if I export at anything higher than 72 dpi I see the image in the middle with a ghosting on either side. Anyone else have this problem?

Also is there anyway to export to a pdf file?

Am I The Only One Feeling That Somehow My Flash Has Bugs?
Hi guys, somehow i feel that my Flash program has a bug. I have tried reinstalling and most of the time either my gotoandplay or play next scene just wont work. Am i the only one in the universe has such a damm problem? Another friend of mine tried to solve my loader prob it works in his workstation but doesnt in mine. ******* piss off by it. Any solutions?

Flash Bugs - Did I Miss Something?
Since Adobe bought Macromedia weird things are happening.

First of all, every flash site I visit, or even every HTML site that has some flash content, there are thin borders around flash objects - when I roll-over them a tooltip appears: "Click to activate and use this control".
- Does anyone knows why it's happening?

And a second one:
Sometimes when I visit some webpage (for example: http://www.citrus.lv),
There where should be flash intro, the Windows's dialog box pops-up:

Click to run an ActiveX control on this webpage

[ OK ]

But when I click [ OK ], the only thing I see is something like an empty text-area instead of flash intro.

I looked at Souce Code. there is a simple shockwawe object (that's not working, at least for me):
