I created a flash portfolio via this tutorial: http://www.oman3d.com/tutorials/flash/portfolio_bc/

Everything works fine. My question is this: I do not want the first thing you see to be one of my works. I wanted it to be a little introduction/artist's statement. However, I don't know how to add something to the beginning...I've tried adding new keyframes/blank keyframes...but then it shifts everything one step and causes all the "buttons" to show the wrong work...

I hope I explained thoroughly enough..if not just let me know. I thought that posting the tutorial I used would help.

Flash Portfolio
I am looking to create a very simple flash portfolio that would look like this: There would be a strip of images on the page and a list of numbers underneath them. Only four images would be displayed at one time. The numbers below the images would be used as navigation to each set of four images. Depending on which number you click, the strip would slide either left or right to the corresponding group. I am new to flash and not sure how to make this happen. If anyone can point me to a site which might be able to get me started I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Xml/flash Portfolio Help
hi, i'm new to this message board and fairly new to flash/actionscripting. below is an image of how i'd like my site to look. i want to redo my portfolio and i'm not quite sure how hard it would be to do what i am looking for.

basically when you'd go to the site it would sort of fade in. no thumbs or display box would be there. maybe an image. like this:

if you wanted to get back to that main image you would click "main." then to view my work you'd click on the top nav buttons (print, web, etc) and then that would load the thumbnails on the left.

you'd click on a thumbnail and it would show the project title/description, the image of it in larger form on the right side display box, and subnav numbers per the amount of images associated with that project. you could click those subnav numbers to show the other images associated in the display box.

i want this all to be xml driven so that it would be easy to update. so that's the kicker for me in terms of building it as i'm not a script person. i'm a graphic designer.

how hard would this be?

and if i couldn't do it myself, does anyone have a clue how much someone would possibly charge to make this?

Portfolio Flash Help
Hi all,

I'm a beginner in flash and I need help with a question.

I'm putting up a porfolio site and I'm trying to figure out how to create a a way to display my images without having to have it preloaded with the menu.

A good example of this is www.designchapel.com. The main menu system is what's preloaded but the porfolio pictures are separately called up.

I hope I'm making this clear. I'm stuck right now and I don't want the flash design becoming bloated. Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it.

Using Flash To Create Portfolio For CD
Has anybody done this?

I need some help.

I would like to know how to put my portfolio on a CD. Do I do it just the same way I do my portfolio on my business web site? Do I need to use Flash, or some other format?

At first, I was just placing folders with work done using various software packages. So, I had a Flash folder, a Photoshop folder, etc. However, this seems very unnprofessional and unattractive.

Any ideas or experience in this area would be much appreciated.

Help On Making A Flash Portfolio
Hi!

I need to do a simple portfolio, and I'd love to make it in flash. I've already made the basic interface and the menu with the help of a tutorial.

Now, I need to add interactivity to it, but I'm not sure how to do it. I just want the different sections to appear when you click on a button on the menu, preceded by a little animation. I'm pretty sure I can achieve it by telling each button to jump to a different keyframe, but I think I need a little help to organize my movie (for example, should I make each section into a movieclip?).

The menu is a movieclip, all the buttons are grouped.

By the way, I know most of the basic aspects of flash, as making buttons, symbols, paths, etc, and a little bit of actionscript.

Edited to explain what I have done:
My interface, background, etc., are in separate layers. In another layer, there is a small animation that starts when the flash begins and then stays there, static.
The different sections are in the same layer, each section in 3 keyframes. I will animate them to fade in and out when clicked, so the number of keyframes will increase.

Hope I'm making sense, English is not my native language.

Animated Flash Portfolio
I'm a first time forum user. I've used basic Flash elements in webpages, but I'm very new to actionscript. I'm putting together a simple portfolio site which I hope to build on and refine once the animation techniques are smoothed out.

The problem I'm having is when the file is published the animations are smooth for the first few clicks. Then it seems like certain frames out of sequences start to pop up at random (like afterimages) when the button is pressed again, like the payhead is starting at the end of the animation sequence. For example, when you press any of the 3 buttons on the right a thumbnail viewer is produced along with the full size picviewer. When you press on the graphics button on the left it should reset to the initial scene. Functionally it works, but if you go back and forth more than once you'll see the frame-popups I was mentioning. Is there a reset or load/unload method I should be using? Any input would be appreciated. (sorry if this is too wordy)

My Flash site loads a PDF of portfolio samples, but Acrobat sucks for this. Any ideas for alternatives?

Currently, if you click "Samples" then hit the green "Sneak Preview" button, it loads a 1.8 mg PDF. But that takes too long; some viewers don't get thumbnails; clicking on "View it online" links within the PDF doesn't open a new blank window, etc...

But my portfolio is already in PDF format so updating the website is easy. Shall I consider making my own viewer in Flash and simply link single PDF pages so they load one at a time as the viewer clicks on little thumbnails that I can make?

XML Based Flash Portfolio
Hi,

I am attempting to make a portfolio to put on CD rom to send out with my resume (to try and get a job). heres a brief description - the attached zip will help explain.

this portfolio will show my websites, graphics, awards, and publications. i have created a xml file (see attached zip) which describes each portfolio entry using unique tags (i use CDATA to render as html).

The image attached explains what i am trying to achieve. when the portfolio opens the user will select which section they which to view: websites, graphics, awards, or publications.
when the user clicks on a section such as websites, a screen will now briefly display each entry in that section in a scrollable pane- showing the thumbnail, title, and year. then if the user clicks on an individual entry a new screen will display a more detailed view, including an image, title, year, url, and description.

This will be a first for me so i'm hoping to get some help, examples, etc, anything that can support me in this task. any help is much appreciated. i thought maybe someones done something similar. im also sure such an example would be useful to many other people.

Okey, so I am designing a website of my portfolio, do you think I should add a loading bar before every portfolio Item? I know it will compress my website but I have such hard time trying to do it, my question is, is it that important to add or I can go by basic Action Scripting?
Second question:
My fla. site (before adding any sound or even my portfolio items) is 4.3 MB, is that big?? I don't have any complicated animation or anything!!

So if anyone could tell me what's the best way to creat a portfolio website, is it by using basic load graphic behavior or adding loading bar to make the proccess run faster?

Flash Image Portfolio
I was wondering if this is the right way to create a Flash portfolio? I created a Flash portfolio by creating keyframes on frames 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 , 21, 23, 25, 27, 29 ,31, 33, 35, and 37. I then create a layer named "buttons" and made each button set to on "press" Goto frame() etc. I have to just load large .jpg images into each of the above frames and add a preloader to each frame.

Is this an OK way to do it. I don't have hardly and coding so it's very clean. When someone visits my site does the flash SWF have to download everything (all images etc) at once? or will adding the preloaders make the download progressive?

Dynamic Flash Portfolio
i want to make a new portfolio site in flash... i was thinking on using as much server-side scripting as possible, to make in easier to update and add some features like flash guestbook/mail form and some other stuff... I was wondering... is it possible using php and mysql to add content to the portfolio without modifying the flash itself? Is there a tutorial regarding this? WHat i want, exactly is to be able to add photos, sites, prints and other stuff to my portfolio like i would add a post to this forum... the title being the title, the message being the description of the project and the pic i can attach being the photo itself...

Issue With PHP/Flash MX Portfolio
Hi,

I have a portfolio on our site that is supposed to display a list of sites we have created. When a site is selected within the list, a dynamic jpg representing the site, as well as a caption describing the site, are supposed to appear. The caption and list are in their own text fields (called caption and content). The jpg is to be loaded in a movie clip called picHolder. These files exist in a database created in PHP.

Right now, the list works. It will pull up a jpg when a site is clicked within the list. When we added a description of the site in the data base, the jpg stopped appearing when its respective site is selected within the list...yet, the description appears. They are supposed to appear at the same time, and together. Right now, only two of the sites in this list have descriptions...the rest do not...The jpgs still appear when those remaining sites are clicked on within the list because the do not have descriptions.

Here is the AS I think is causing the problem. There is something up with the strings. I just don't know what it is. Maybe a fresh set of eyes will discover the issue.

Not looking for a quote, more an idea of time and effort that would be involved.
Can anyone give me an idea of the feasibility and complexity of what I'm looking for?

I need to generate an interesting way to display a portfolio of web sites.
The curved, 3D image showing thumbnails in the header of this site really appeals to me: http://www.cwd.dk/

I'd like to have the following in Flash based on that style of design?
- Ability to scroll thumbnails left and right to give the impression that the
user is stood inside a circle of thumbnails which is rotating around them.
- Ability to add new thumbnails with links without editing the Flash

Flash Transitions In Portfolio
I am making a portfolio part of a website, and I want to do something like what these sites did... architekturpa.com and www.som.com

I don't like everything about architekturpa.com, but I like that when you click on the buttons on the top instead of just going to the page, the buttons swap places. How would that be done?

The more important thing that I am trying to figure out is on www.som.com. If you click on any project name and it goes into the portfolio, I love they way they have the thumbnails down the side and when you click on the thumbnail is swaps places with the photo that's already there. I really want to figure out how to do this, so if anyone could point me in the direction of a tutorial or let me know some code I should try I would really appreciate it.

Linking For Portfolio Website - Flash 8
Hello,

I have set up my website portfolio as follows. I have on scene 1 frame 2 my main page, with a navigation movieclip and a content movie clip. The idea is whenever someone clicks on button (button inside movieclip), the button will load a specific frame within the content_mc and display it on scene one. The information being loaded is an external text file that links into a textfield.

I have been able to get the first page of text to load, but continuing the code has the text box either displaying "undefinded" or nothing at all. I was told I need to set variables within my content_mc and the same on my scene 1, but I cant figure it out.

I figure that because I have more than one text file, I need to load them all on scene one, but I'm still new to actionscript so it hurts my head a bit lol.

The text below is found on an action layer on scene one, frame 2 (where my content_mc is placed):

Flash Portfolio Website & Video
I am creating a flash portfolio website. Everything is done except putting the videos in. Thumbnail images of the videos were imported in and were converted to movieclips. I have put on the stage a FLVPlayback but have no idea how to get my four movie clips to show on the FLVPlayback when I go to test my movie. By the way, all the videos are all ready on my server; flv, swc, swf. I don't know what scripts to use (AS3 is a lot harder to me at least).

[Flash 8] Xml, Multiple Portfolio Gallery
hi. i'm trying to make a multiple gallery portfolio with xml. i'm using hga77's fabulous xml menu and what i thought i could do was give an attribute to each portfolio button that would reference other xml files that would contain all the information for the images, thumbs and textInfo. so, first what would happen is a portfolio would be chosen, the gallery movieclip would load and then in that movieclip it would process the xml for the chosen portfolio. did that make sense

my main questions are, will this work? will there be conflicts between the xml that creates the menu and the xml that creates the new gallery? And, the big question and the part that i am most confused about is, how do i pass the variable for the new xml file into the movieclip that will parse it?

ok, here's what i'm thinking. i would have say, a "newXML" variable. if you click on folio1 button, newXML is going to equal = this.firstChild.childNodes[1].childNodes[0].attributes.xmlFILE

which would then mean that newXML = folio1.xml.

so, could i then just take that newXML variable and put it into the gallery movieclip where you would write:

Working On A Flash Portfolio...Need Advice
I am relatively new to flash (6 mos) and my focus has been in learning AS2. My goal is to find a position as an AS developer. Is it expected, of an AS developer, to have a portfolio? If so, what advice can you give me on how to go about developing a portfolio or what to put into one for someone without experience? Would you recommend teaming up with a Flash designer?

Flash File Crashing My Portfolio.
Hey guys, I assembled a portfolio to test out some nice effects I've seen around and it works fine when run off my PC, and usually fine when I run it off my server.

However, occasionally it will cause my IE to freeze and crash. I have no idea why, although I suspect it may have something to do with my server. I have given it to various people to look at, and some others have experienced the same problem - while for others it just runs fine. Print Portfolio Site: Dreamweaver... Flash... Or Both? (mac)

I'm a print designer, but need to get an online presence going. The little I know about Flash is dangerous I dont know which applications would be best to use... I'm keen on flash but someone suggested that i go dreamweaver + flash? Main thing is the mechanics of the portfolio viewing pages. I need a scrollable menu, but when an item is clicked on, not only does image appear in the viewing box, but the menu item expands down with text about the particular project. So kinda like a menu, with menu drop down i suppose? The nav bar should be scrollable when you go to its edges, and the information should be collapsed again when I click on another item. Would appreciate the help. Flash vs Dreamweaver?

Hi i'm going to start creating a flash site to show my work on shortly and would like some advice from anyone who has made one before.

My work is very diverse ranging from graphic illustrations, flash animations, photographs, htlm sites, flash sites and music videos. So i was wondering for my flash sites and animations should I try to incorporate them into my portfolio site or have a link to them and have them pop up in a separate window?

And in general i was wondering what dimensions are standard for a flash site and should i put it into a html page? and is they anything i should include in the site that will help it stand out more? thanks

Strange Problem With MenuXpos (Flash Portfolio)

I recently built my first portfolio using Flash 8. Sadly I'm having trouble with a bug or something

Since I'm a newbie when it comes to Actionscipting I pretty much just stole the following code from a friend...

As you can see, the problem is that the image document in "Art" becomes shaky after giving it a X value from the menu.

The code that I've declared in my Actions layer looks like this:

The most peculiar thing, IMO, is that the "bug" just comes and goes. At first the "Projekt" section was affected too, but then it disappeared. Then "Art" became shaky on Macs, but now also on PCs etc.

I've already tried the following:

1. Changing the X-values
2. Changing the number of steps etc.
3. Changing the size of the image document
4. Changing the FPS

Etc.

I would be forever grateful if someone with greater knowledge than me could come up with an idea of what might be wrong. Or if it's just bad luck...

Using Flash/Actionscript To Create PDF Portfolio Navigator
Hi Guys

We've been using Acrobat Pro Extended to create PDF Portfolio's for a wee while now, and now in order to create a 'fresh look', my boss is wanting to create custom navigators.

As the programmer of the team, I've looked into it and found out that it involves Actionscripting/Flex. While I'm a decent enough programmer, Actionscript isnt something I've used before, so I was wondering if there were any online guides or books I could buy that specifically show how to create a customer navigator for a pdf portfolio.

Adding Some Dynamic Content To My Flash Portfolio
Hi Guys,
At the moment im working on a portfolio for one of my modules at university. This involves the creation of a interactive portfolio of work.

I have created a prototpye and now I must fully implement it.

I wanted to add some sort of database element to it using php and mySQL. As we are given more marks for the use of more technical elements.

The ideas I had in mind were:

dynamic - CV / Resume.
dynamic - 'about me' section.

Or taking things further, storing the decriptions of my work in a databse and have flash call them when needed etc.

Im after help, guidance and suggestions from all you Gurus out there.

Using History.js Combined With Flash Index.html#portfolio

Been trying to figure this one out for a while. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.

What Id like to do is to pass variales from flash to javascript and vice versa.

Why? Well Id like visitors to be able to bookmark for instance www.name.com/index.html#client?id=name
I think Ive figured out how to send variables to flash using swfobject but Im no where near figuring out how to change url to #contact without reloading the swf.

Have Some Flash Banner SWF Files Play Within The Portfolio Page Of My Site
I've been working on my first full blown flash site for a few weeks, tackling problems as I encounter them, and I've learned a lot...but sometimes the simplest things I cannot figure out for the life of me. All I am trying to do is have some flash banner SWF files play within the portfolio page of my site. I don't want them to open in a pop up or anything just play within the page when the link on my site is clicked. I figured it would act like a movie clip and I could just drop it onto the stage, but when I do that it doesn't look right, loops continuously, and is not interactive. How can I make this work?

Recipe For An Excellent, Functional Flash/HTML Portfolio Site
HI!

Just wanted a reminder on what backend and front-end components are mandatory for a successful Flash/HTML portfolio site. Anyone can put their resume on the site, and links to few websites they've done but I need to go beyond this basic approach. My old flash portfolio site (made 5 years ago) was a Flash movie embedded in a html container and it had links to other sites..there was no CSS or XHTML at all.

Also, I needed to find a way to learn AJAX/Ruby, so I thought maybe I could do that by applying it to the portfolio website. For those who have used AJAX/Ruby alongside with Flash, HTML, and CSS, how has it benefited your portfolio sites? Thanks.

Flash Website - Video Gallery/portfolio Type Thing
hi all

what i want to do is display various video content on my flash website, but I'm a bit new to Flash and I'm struggling.

What I've done is put single videos using the 'media display' and 'controller' on single 'pages', each in seperate scenes in the movie - this doesn't work - it's slow when streamed and the sound continues once another movie is selected from the various thumbnails.

Portfolio Help
I am creating a portfolio of my flash work to burn on CD but I don't know how to load a different movie per key frame so you can scroll through them with buttons and have all the functions of each movie working.

Need To Pop Up A Portfolio Box
Hi there,

I'm building a site that demonstrates my work. Under my portfolio link I want to have a series of links that when pressed will dispay a box, on the same page as the portfolio links, with a blurb about each job. Like this:

Job1 Job3 --------------------------

| bunch of text |
| |
| some fancy background |
| |

------------------------

I want this box to "fold" into the frame, from the center of the box - may you would call it stretching from the center out.

Can someone point me to some tuts that may help? ok here's a site with the idea:

goto to Portfolio and then Activate on the middle stage.

Portfolio Help
I have a portfolio with a lot of external files with the same name that I would like to show but have a problem. The fscommand only calls up files within that folder(fscommand) and I can't bring in the ones with the same name into the fscommand folder..

I guess my question is how do call up these .exe files if flash 6 only looks in the fscommand folder for.exes. I know you could do this with flash 5.I don't understand how I see all these online portfolios call up work without embedding them in their movie.
