Flash :: How To Develop Virtual Pet?

What Does A Virtual Tour Cost To Develop?
I work for a small university in the States. We're trying to evaluate whether or not we're going to try to develop a virtual tour in-house or sub it out. So I'm looking for some basic ballpark estimates of what a virtual tour project would cost.

Hereâ€™s what weâ€™re looking for in a virtual tour:

1. Chapter based organization - The tour will be divided into six chapters with maybe four scenes within each chapter.

2. Relies heavily on video - The scenes themselves will be short 15-30 second video clips.

3. Template driven - Obviously the project will be delivered in Flash, but weâ€™d also like it to be template driven, perhaps XML so that we can update the contents without having to touch the actual flash.

I admire sites like the Vodafone Journey Web site for its use of video, and while weâ€™ll probably not be able to reach this level of quality this Web site best demonstrates where weâ€™d like to go:

So back to my original question. Whatâ€™s a ballpark estimate of what a virtual tour cost to develop?

If we do decide to sub it out we'll most likely write a formal RFP that will likely include one of two options.

RFP Options

1. Flash work only.
The university will do all of the art direction, content development. We will essentially hand off all of the content and storyboards for the flash developer to create.

2. Everything
The vendor will handle the art direction, content creation and flash development. We will provide artwork and content as needed but the vendor will be the driving force behind the project.

If you were considering a project like this, which of the two options would you prefer and what would you like to see outlined in a potential RFP?

Greetings all!

I hope this is the proper place to post this. Guess I will find out!
I am looking for someone who wants to help me develop a drawing program to integrate into my website. I have seen things like iSketch and the drawing program on plastically.org (currently not working) and this is the sort of thing I am interested in.
Once the program is made, I can have it imbedded into a special page so my visitors can play around with it.
The drawing program would work basically like PhotoShop but of course simpler..with pencil tool, fill button, color options, etc.
I can help with the layout and be more specific on what I want. And yes, I pay $$$$!!

Is there an addon to flash that will alow you to develop interactive CBT. I know nothing about using flash, but have been directed to this website to conduct some research. In the past the developers used director to put together online software simulations. The user is required to add content to fields and click functions of a software page to have the CBT move to the next step.

Lines During Develop
Hi all,

I have no idea with I did but...when I draw a line on the stage it show up as green. I doesn't matter if I change the color or thickness ... it still shows up as a thin green line. When I run the movie I see the line as it should be with the chosen color and thickness.

A site where people can upload an image and a few bits of text to and then this image and info will be displayed in flash!

i would like to do it so as people upload an image it creates a new block in the flash that will display the image so it grows in content!

Hi, even though this is my first post, I'm a pretty experienced programmer.
I'm using different programming languages in my work but my hobby is Flash, and I made several games
Anywho, I can get my stuff to work eventually, but everytime I start actionscripting I get this weird feeling - "this is not how it was actually meant to be done".
To be more specific - where the hell I'm supposed to code? In frame number 1? In a different file? In every frame?
I used to even put code on my MovieClips but now in AS3 it's impossible
Also, programming in Flash itself is pretty annoying for me, not auto-completion or anything.
I'm also interested in learning how to write my own classes and using them, which I just can't understand.
IN SHORT- I just wanna know how the pro's do it. What's your work process?
I would really like to hear some advices and read articles if you link me to any.

Trying To Develop A Simple Interface
i'm trying to get this concept down before making any larger, but flash is yelling at me. the fla is at jobs.alfred.edu/~huttert if you want a visual of what's going on. The goal of this is to have one choice load (play an animation) then depending on the user's choice unload (play an animation) and load the next clip. in other words pop up on choice, pop down on the next choice. The problem comes when i script it to evaluate the last choice it sees it but doesn't gotoAndPlay the animation on the main timeline. Any suggestions?

Need To Develop A Flash Menu...
...that will auto-update based on what page is being viewed.

I have a flash menu that is conceptually designed to work as follows:

It's a 7 chevron menu - same menu on every page - with each chevron containing a link to the corresponding page. When page 1 is being viewed the corresponding chevron is shaded, etc..

Right now it is designed so that the flash menu calls on a text file to determine what page (and therefore what chevron) is to be affected.

Is there a way to have the asp page containing the flash file update the flash menu, either by having the flash file update automatically or by having the asp page update the text file, or anything else that I haven't considered?

Develop AS3 Code Using Mac And Windows?
In my company we currently have a couple people working on a project using Actionscript 3 to write our own custom classes. We all have windows machines on a network with a file server where our projects are stored on a RAID system.

I would like to get a MacBook Pro. Does anyone know of any network problems I might run into?

Can I write AS3 Class files from a Mac and have them be saved on a PC server while other developers are working on the same project? It's been a while since I worked on a Mac (G3) so I'm just trying to make sure this is a good move given eveyone else at the company are on PC.

Also has anyone had any luck getting the MacBook Pro to output to two monitors? I have some nice flat screen monitors I'd like to use but from what I've read it sounds like the MacBook will only output one signal.

Help On Start Develop A Planning Board
Hello,

At work we have several printing presses which run 24/7.
We are in need of a simple planning system that replaces the excisting board with cards. I designed an asp intranet site earlyer, but it was still to complicated to use.

Now I have another idea. I'd like to create a replica of this cardboard in flash. A board where you can add a card which contains info about a job stored in a database based on unique id. The sole purpose is to be able to drag the cards around the planningboard like they do now with the actual board.

There are several things to know.
-Two kinds of users: Admin and guest (Admin can add, edit and delete)
-The cardlength has to be changeable to match the hours that the job takes place.
-The card contains a title which is the only thing that has to be visible when placed in the board. Only after dropdown, the rest is viewable.
-Guest users need an autorefresh of the content.

Does anyone know a similar script, or a good starter script for me?
I actually only need a square that is draggable and contains database content which can be edited.

Best Way To Develop A New Project - Post Your Opinion
I have a new project that I need to develop in flash using Actionscript. Although I'm very familiar with Flash graphics and animation, I don't do much with actionscript.

This is what needs to be done. It's basically showing someone steps they need to take to complete a task.

The screen will have 5 buttons.

When someone click on a button 3 other buttons will then appear. When they click on a button that appeared it will pop up a window that displays some text and they can close this.

To make this happen should I code this all in one swf or should I use LoadMovie commands to load other swf's into the stage? I was thinking I may use the LoadMovie command to load the windows of text that have the close button.

What do you think is the best way to go about doing something like this?

Flash Develop And Stage Dimensions
I am currently using FlashDevelop for building AS 3 projects and have one question. How can i set the stage height and width since there is no timeline and document properties in FD like those in Flash IDE. If i trace from FD current 'stage.stageHeight' and 'stage.stageWidth' i get 367 and 571 values but how can i change that dimensions?

Attempting Develop Navigation Compass...
I am working on a concept project where I want to be able to drag out lines over an image of a location (let's say it is an outdoor park)( this image will act as my map) and be able to get compass heading information from each point. To explain further, you will have numerous places to start your course. You click and drag out a line to the first destination, compass information reports at the cursor. You release at the first destination course information reports in a panel outside the map. You can repeat the process to build up successive legs of your course that all reports to the panel outside the map. Other things are planned but this is the initial step.

Is there an API or Component out there that I could tailor to work on a map of the scale I spoke of? Any thoughts about where to start.?

Let's Develop An Open Source DRAWING APP
I have some ideas for an online drawing application capable of creating and saving vector content. My guess is that a lot of you out there will want to create a UI in which your user draws shapes that can then be saved (possibly as SVG) or used in your applications. But it doesn't make sense for all of us to reinvent the wheel each time and come up with new drawing tools.

So would anyone be interested in making the most of Flash MX's new drawing API and writing some neat tools for creating and editing simple vectors like polylines and primitives?

That would be the first priority and is fairly easily done, but I'm also hoping that we'd be able to create and share more advanced tools that do stuff like interpreting and smoothing freehand sketched lines (just like in Flash) or adding CAD-like capabilities such as ortho-snaps and trims.

Please let me know if anyone else is interested in developing such an app or library of tools. I think this could be really powerful if we all share our work and ideas.

What Spec Of Pc Do You Have In Mind When You All Develop Your Flash Projects?
Hi, I'm developing a game on my my 2Ghz PC and am trying to find the optimum frame rate.

when i set the fps to 20 the game runs at the same speed whatever the quality. However if I increase the fps to 25 and i run the game in low quality it runs correspondingly 25% faster, but with the quality at high then my machine clearly can't keep up and I get a small speed increase but not the 25% you might expect.

The thing is the game is definitely more responsive at 25fps, but because this is obviously pushing the capability of my own PC i'm loathe to set it to that because anyone with a slower pc will have a slow/choppy experience. On the other hand my pc is pretty crappy so maybe no one has a slower pc.

Basically should I assume my pc is at the lower end of the scale and bung the fps up to 25 or play it safe and set the fps to 20, or even lower?
sorry this is so vague but if anyone has a complete set of CPU demographics for home computers that would be sweet!

Hi, What is the best Flash version for me to upgrade to given my current level?
I currently have Macromedia Flash MX 2004.
I understand Flash 9 is designed more for AS3, which appears to be more for coders. Am I best to stay away from this version and choose a lesser program that is more ideal for AS2? If so which program would you suggest?

Trying To Develop Robotic Manipulator Simulator In Flash....pls Help

I am a robotics programmer and am trying to develop a simulator for one of my research work. I have created a C code which will give me joint angles for the 6 joints of an industrial robot. Between every 2 joints is 1 link. Now i am trying to create an application where when i feed those 6 joint angles, the 6 joints should rotate by that specific amount (whihc hsould not be very difficult to achieve). However if joint 1 rotates by 45 degrees, all the links and joints after it should get displaced by 45 degrees. Further each joint would displace the links and joints after it similarly. In this way i would be able to get the robot to move to a desired point and check if my calculations are right. I am wondering how to do this. Any comments would be really appreciated. If someone can prepare a small prototype for 2 joints and 1 link then i can replicate the same for all the other joints.

I am looking for a tutorial regarding how to make a simple search engine with AS. I am beginning it from scratch, so any help will be much appreciated.

Here is what I want to do: inside my swf I´ll have two input text fields which will work as paramaters for the search. So the user types its search words and press "Search" or something... Flash then will look for the matching words inside a txt file, or xml file (or any format you think is better), and populate a dynamic text field with the results...

Totally Lost - How To Develop Buttons And Lists To Interact With A Database?
[using flash 8 pro]
I am so out of my league here it isn't even funny.

I need to develop interface components, similar to the list and combo box components, that will allow the user to choose from around 25 search criteria and then click a "GO" button to send their search request to a database. Some input text fields will be needed as well.

I am writing this because my experiments with the components in Flash 8 pro have revealed they stop working if any movement is applied to them. I need to use them in a movie clip that moves around. To help explain, I have attached the entire thing here. Run the swf, click on the big "Search" button and you'll see what I'm talking about. The list component there should have two rows of text visible: "blah1" and "blah2". There is no text.
GET THE FILE
All I need help on is:
-Should I use components to do this? I'll need lists, comboboxes, and text entry fields.
-Should I custom make the UI things I need?
-Is this even the right way to design such things that interact with a database?

Virtual Pet HELP
Im making an online virtual pet (tamagochi), but i have a couple of questions im unsure about and would like to be sure of before i start.
As follows here ill try to explain what i need to know.

1. How would i conect and external time to the flash, in this case it would be the server clock.

2. Would it be hard to make a function witch would allow for the user to name the pet.

3. Is there somewhere a library with fla:s i could browse and se how they made their own sites, functions, buttons etc..

Virtual Pet
I am trying to create a virtual pet (using director lingo) that can be interacted with (by the user) in ways which are intuitive and "natural". Involve the creature interacting with on-screen objects manipulated by the user. The virtual pet will change its behaviour over time by remembering, by adapting to the user and his/her typical actions, by "learning" or via the use of "evolution".
The pet might for example "grow" by increasing in size, changing shape or proportions (as with babies to adults) or by increasing in number (such as a swarm which acts together or follows each other).

So, please help, really appreciate it.
