How Do You Make A Good/decent Flash Site?
I'm sort of new to flash. I was wondering if aybody knows a tutorial out there to show me how to create a good web page. i want to make one with animated buttons, and when you click on the button an animation occurs which brings you to the page. Also I don't know how to make a flash movie inside of a movie..therefore all my animations are on one single timeline. Someone please help!

i have just about finished my website using flash and photoshop. I have tried to make my pages as small as possible for quicker loading time. My average page is about 50Kb and there 5 pages. So all up the site is about 250-300Kb.

Ok this band decided they didnt want the background I had on there but instead a 1024x1024 image of there album...

right now I had I have an on resize function set to

bg._width = Stage.width;
bg._height = Stage.height;

ok thats fine if your viewing it on a normal monitor I guess, but for widescreen monitors it has to look terrible. I am guessing setting the width to the stage as well of the height isnt the best route to go. If you have any other suggesetions let me know. I do have an original psd that is a different size, so it doesnt have to be 1024x1024. Thanks guys.

Layers And Depth .. Whos On Top Of Who?
I made a layer with a movieclip that creates some textfields, i give them depths 0 - 30.. now i would like to have a new layer with vector art on it that always partially obscures the textfields.. i make a new layer that's above the one with the generated textfields but the text is always on top, never the art.. anybody know why, are depth and layer (layer-order if this were photoshop, or z-index if this were dhtml), and how to GET ON TOP of the generated text? ) btw, the movieclip is dynamic too.. here's the code that i use now to create the text:

How To Make A Good SCROLLBAR?
hi... I created a movie

now you see a movieclip
if you press the 'STAF' button on the bottom a short movieclip will open

the little arrows make the movieclip go up and down
BUT.. you have to keep pressing them again and again.

how do I make a good scrollbar???
I didn't understand the component.
but I want it to be like in windows with a little bar to scroll OR that you can press the button once and that the MC keeps going on.

Is This A Good Way To Make A Guestbook WITHOUT Php?
Hey all,

I've just been browsing the forums for some threads that would help me out with creating a guestbook and the most common problem I encountered was people were under the impression they needed to use PHP to create a good guestbook.

Perhaps this is true, but I thought I would ask the following anyway:

Couldn't you have a textbox in your .swf that referenced an external guestbook.txt file. And if they wanted to add to it, they would fill out the apropriate boxes and then the .swf would just add their bit to the external .txt?

I was under the impression actionscript was able to edit external files. But I could be wrong.

How To Make Text Look Really Good
This is not a question. I just wanted to share something that I discovered, by accendent with you.

In the past I have seen quite a few people moaning about the the quality of the test added to a Flash movie. In Flash 8 there is an option that enable text to be rendered for readability so things improved somewhat.

I have found that, if you set the alpha level to any text to 99% the quality improvement is fantastic.

I am sure that this is known throughout the Flash user community but I just wanted to let you know.

How To Make A Good Flv Reloading?

I want to make a function that changes the flv that is on the videowindow.

Whos's Got The Answer - Loading & Cache
Okay....now this is the problem. I live in India & the connection speeds here are miserable.

I have a 160 Kb movie & a graphical preloader attached to it. The preloader displays the total no. of bytes, bytes downloaded, the percentade download upto one decimal unit & the bytes remaining. Sometimes when the speeds are okay, it loads wonderfully. At times the speed drops down to 500 bytes per second. This is where the problem occurs.

What happens is that the download stops completely. Lets for example say that it stops at 46.5%. The practical solution is to hit reload....but this doesnt work because the speeds are very low & it stays stuck at 46.5%.

That means that 46.5% of the total data has been downloaded into your computer. That again goes to mean that 46.5% of the file is saved in your cache.

If I try again after some time when the speed increases...the same thing happens. As soon as the page opens it displays that 46.5% has downloaded ( I realise that this has come from the cache ) & it refuses to load further. It stays stuck at 46.5%. Surprisingly, if i try opening other pages, they download, but not this one.

I have to delete all the stored files in the cache for it to load properly again. My file load perfectly when this is done. this shows that there is no flaw in my design.

Has anyone come across this problem. Can anyone explain this & does anyone have a solution for this.

Looking For A Way To Make RPG Maps With -GOOD- Collision Detections
I am currently making a Role Playing Game. It it really nice actually, not cheap at all. I got the battle system coded with monsters and everything, it all works perfectly! I'm making the menu right now.. but something is missing.

In order to continue and create the actual storyline, I need MAPS. I designed them of course, but I can't figure a simple way to make collision detections with the character moving.

I looked for code. The only GOOD one I came up with worked, but only for big objects. When the objects are too small the character simply goes through them. I liked this method tho. You simply had to -draw- your "solid" hit-testing area and the code would make the character collide with the drawn part.

I don't need a code for my character to go around anything circular; Everything can be made of squares, tiles or whatever (like most RPGs.)
I just need something simple to use on multiple maps.

How To Make Enlarged Or Reduced Images Look Good?
So here's the deal; im trying to make an imported png image reduce or enlarge (doesnt matter which effect i try) its size and change opacity(brightness) when onRollOver...

But the reduced/enlarged image ends up looking like crap and all pixelated in its onRollOver state, so i tried to reduce the image size in photoshop and then import 2 different images - one onrollout version and one onrollover version, but this ends like looking like crap anyway (tried both move tween and shape tween)...

Ive seen websites using this effect (images changing size smoothlywhen onrollover), but i havent gotten the right look and feel of it.. how do they do it?

Maybe this effect can be done in actioscript but i dunno how in that case...

Help greatly appreciated!

Trouble With Movie Clips Whos Depth I Am Changing
hi all

i am having trouble with movie clips whose depth i am changing with swapDepths().

They act a bit irradically and do not always stay invisible even if i set _visible property false.
Also they tend to come back on stage even after i remove them using removeMovieClip(Mc), specially if i go back on the timeline (though this is not a hard and fast rule).

Can anybody guide me.

We dont want to use speech bubbles but we dont know anyother way to make it noticable that some one is talking. (we are using stick figures so they dont have mouths) we are going to self record wav. files for voices but then you cant tell who is talking.

How To Do Alpha Effect On Movie Clip Whos Colour Is Set By Actionscript?
I have uploaded the file so you can see what I mean. In the actual file, I am working on, there are animations between frame 2-19. When it gets to frame 20 the alpha effect on Symbol 2 does not work due to the actionscript colour change.

Buttons Whos Actions Depend On States Of Other Buttons -HOW?
Hi,

I’ve made a 3D animation as a background to my homepage, and have imported it into Flash CS3 as a series of still TIFF images (one image on each frame).

Now I am looking to control this animation using a series of 9 buttons. At the moment each button does the following:

Button1: Play frames 01 – 20. Stop.
Button2: Play frames 21 – 30. Stop.
Button3: Play frames 31 – 40. Stop.
…etc.

However, I want to make each button’s action dependant on the states of the other buttons:

When the user presses any of the 8 buttons other than the one that is currently engaged, I want the animation relating to the button that is currently engaged to be played in reverse, and then the animation belonging to the button that has just been pressed to be played!

For example, if Button 1 has been pressed, then the user presses Button 2, I want frames 20 – 01 and then frames 21 – 30 to be played. Another example; Button 3 is engaged, user presses Button 1 – frames 40 – 31 should be played and then frames 01 – 20.

If anyone could help me with the ActionScript to perform this (ideally AS3 but AS2 is fine) then I would be extremely, extremely grateful.

RollOvers Whos Parents Also Have Rollovers
I'm creating a self-hiding nav bar like the Start bar on Windows when it is set to auto-hide.
I have it set to retreat onRollOut, the problem is, when I roll over one of the menu items, it triggers the onRollOut of the parent bar and it retreats.

Any suggestions on how to handle this?

Hi,

I've got 3 bitmaps which I saved at highest res and imported into Flash. I made them into animated buttons. It all works fine with the background big enough, the movies playing nicely, etc. Viewing it in Flash (.fla) looks great but as soon as I preview it or export it into the swf format, it looks squished or parts look like they're covered up or something. I'm even exporting it without compression at 100%.

What could be causing it to look all awful when I export it or preview it?

I created a website which contains a verticaly large flash movie on it which displays information. In order to read the bottom half of info, the user must scroll down the page. I was wondering if anyone knows the code to make a "return to top" button in flash which would send the html page back to the top without reloading the actual page itself of corse. I just cant figure out how to do it. Thans!

i have been abit into flash but not hardly enough to aswer my own questions.
So I turn to you to see if my vision is doable and how much doe/workingtime I can count on spending.

-I want a webmagazine: The twist with this mag is that its trying to be a real life glossy mag, just online.

-I want a frontpage, fullscreen when entering. like a replica of a real mag. (for layout, check out www.racerxill.com ) That has All the attributes of a good looking mag. mainTitle, coverphoto, titles to the main stories in the mag etc.
(With everything linked to eachother, so if you click a sub-heading on the front cover, it will bring you to the story, and the possibility to change all logos and background pics)

-I want a second page with a overview over what the magazine contains at that date, so you can click the story you like and boom, you are on that page. (and old files being stored in a different section, "old issues")

-I want all stories, advertising etc setup to be like a mag so you can jump from one page to another. (2 pages on one fullscreen possible here? )

-After page 1 (frontpage/Cover) and Page 2 (index to all content in magazine + dynamic layout)

-I want a fully working publishing system that automates this process with a nice layout and links everything together. Different templates so the pages dont look the same and different backgrounds option on each page.

-The advertising will be built into the page directly like a real mag.

I Used To Be Good At Flash.
When I was young like most of you. Then I stopped focusing all my attention on action script and redirected it into becoming an engineer. Now I get to build 3d models all day and get paid for it. Still I think of the applications Flash could be used for to integrate work flow processes.

Let me throw this out there to you gurus'. My Idea is to build an app that can input multiple dxf files and output in numeric code. The question may seem simple though the project out come will be very complexed. All the issues in between can be resolved at a later point.

I use version 7, I don't need the code just if it can be done.

If anyone has seen a cad/cam app built in flash let me know.

Or any references to this I would appreciate links too.

I am not that good in flash, but I understand some codes in actionscript. I'm using flash 5, and i just want to know how i can make the simplest forum. I also want to know how i can edit my work directly on the internet. For example, I have upload my flash file into the internet which contains different buttons, & those buttons are linked to open different windows. How can i edit it directly on the internet, where i can add another item to those links, and instead not uploading another file which contains the new list?Im sory if I wasn't able to explain my works very well, hope for your help. If you watch the bubbles on the left hand movie rise, they will pop in the top movie in the relevant position. I'm thinking it's using shared objects or something like that to talk between each Flash movie (although I've never had any experience of this).
