Old Frame Based Habits Dying Hard - Any Tips
I'm about to begin building a site and although every time this comes around I think i should learn how to do 'that' with actionscript the work is there and the time isn't. I invariably use frames and make things work but feel I'm only lying to myself. damn!
anyhow - i want to have several, maybe 20 MCs on the stage (colored speech bubbles). Each MC will expand when clicked to reveal content. Now I can do this in my ye olde fashioned way. But want a simple code - or relevant tutorial, I'm not afraid of graft honestly - that will position all the MCs on the stage. When each is rolled over (or some clicked) I want it to expand and reveal it's content while all the other MCs shrink and move around the expanded MC??. Then when closed all MCs move back to their size and space.
Alternatively if you click the other smaller MCs when they are small they will expand and so on... ? I think I'm confusing myself.
If anyone can point me to an idiot proof tutorial or give some pointers i'll buy them a pint in the Dog n Duck in ye olde town square

Frame Based V/s Script Based Animation ?
I guess I'm looking for feedback about your methodoligies for animation. I've been practicing Actionscripting for 3-4 years now and sometimes I get stuck in the thinking that I have to animate everything by scripting the properties of movieclips. I know there are instances were its pointless to script animation or to animate what should be scripted.
What kind of balance if any do you peoples employ when doing a project. I'm working on one right now that I'm scripting out but sometimes I feel like I'm just doing extra work.
Do You Have Any Flash Habits?
I have a few... not really Habits, just things i ALWAYS DO.
1. I always CTRL+Enter, i never use the drop down menu for that.
2. I use Shift alot to select more than one thing or un-select something. (i'm sure most do that)
3. I ALWAYS import to library when it comes to pictures... don't ask...
I have others... post yours!
Eliminating Bad Habits...
i am new to flash... there is something i do as i am designing that i know is the wrong way to go about it, but have not realized a workaround...
as i am programing all the animations that roll out my web site, i am not sure how to go beyond a stop command.
ok, what i do is this...
if the last event that occurs is 30 frames long, i have to be sure that all of the events occuring before that one do not go beyond 30 frames. ONLY BECAUSE I HAVENT FIGURED OUT HOW TO HAVE ANYTHING HAPPEN ONCE I HAVE INSERTED A "stop();" COMMAND... As far as i can tell once you do that your animations stop!?
i know this isn't true but havent figured out just what to do...
so...whats the best way to break this habit??
Load A New Movie At A Certain Frame Based On Current Frame?
hello, i have a 36 frame movie clip
i have a button that is available throughout the 36 frames
if i am on frame 15 of the main movie, can i load in a new movie that opens on it's own frame 15?
whichever frame i am on in the main movie, i want the second movie to open to the matching frame number as the main movie
if this is possible, how would i do it? thanks
[CS3] Frame-By-Frame Tips
i wish to get more info on Animating frame-by-frame... some tips and tricks would come in handy for this...
For instance, if i have a character standing and i just want to animate his arms, on frame-by-fram i would have to redraw the whole character again.. right? But are there some tricks or tips i could use to sorta.... streamline the process a bit?
You see, the only tutorials i find that get at any sort of depth in their subject are about tweens... and stick figures. and i grasp their concept and understand it. but that's not what i want to do...
From what've seen and learned, it seems that i should focus on Frame-by-frame animation with the support of the Onion Skin. If i go that way, each layer i do can be a Full character, transformed into a Element - Image (not movie clip). Right?
And for some of my minor work, i could use the Bones system from CS4, puttng different parts of a character or object in their own layers, making those into Elements - Movie clips... im ok so far?!
So, some help here, please?
Track Specific Listening Habits WITHIN Podcast Using A Flash Player?
Hello! I am starting an internship and have been given a project that I hope you guys might be able to help me with.
Currently, the company has the podcast available in a few different ways. There is an RSS feed, and it is uploaded to Hipcast. Hipcasts player is then posted on a website setup for the podcast. It is also available through iTunes.
They are able to track how many downloads there are through various sources (Feedburner is what is used mainly to my understanding), but there is no real tracking as far as specific usage of the content is concerned.
They are interested in being able to find out (at least from a portion of users - maybe from one delivery method, if not more) what portions of the file are being listened to and how many of those downloads are actually being used, etc.
A thought of mine was to create (or find an existing) flash player that could be used on the podcast's website. This player would hopefully be able to log users (maybe differentiate them by IP address) and log when they press what buttons into a file/database.
Do any of you guys know if this would e possible? Are there any problematic implications on tracking in this fashion?
This info will be used for production purposes of the podcast (if people stop listening at 7 minutes then cut it shorter or change content, for instance).
Any thoughts or information on this topic would be HIGHLY APPRECIATED!!

Folks, I know I have alot to learn, but here's my dilema.
I want to use a telltarget action.
I have a 3 movies on the main timeline.
I want the movies to play all the way through, then at the end of each movie, to goto and play the beginning of the next movie, and so on.
Does anyone have a sample .fla of how to do this. I'm confused of where to name an instance, confused on _root and/or _level0 (which to use) and so on. Thank you for any help you can give.

change text in flash on everything exept the text on the "buttons/links"(you know where it says about us,home,contact,products or whatever).Its probobly very easy,but does anybody know how to i change the text on these. I'm really struggling with actionscript this week. Part of the problems I've been having is that I'm doing somthing for a client that wants it to be flash 5 compatible because they have viewers on older computers and they want it to be flash player 5 compatible. So I'm having to find work arounds for some of the scripts.
But why on earth isn't this working? I want the playhead to go to the next part of the movie once the first part has looped a few times. On frame one I define i=0; then I put this actionscript at the end of the first part:

FMS Edge Dying...
So we've got like 15 Edge servers setup wtih 5 Origin servers. Things seem to generally work for streaming live video. There are problems though where some boxed won't always come up as if FMS has hung.
Currently I'm checking the number of fmscore processes with a script since I can't seem to get the HTTP admin interface to return anything other than NetConnection.Connect.Rejected: Admin user requires valid username and password. Which is odd since it has the correct username and password and the config files say it should work.
But sometimes the servers won't even start correctly. We have all of the logging turned on. But it starts up, says it loads the applications, no second fmscore process starts, and the remaining processes disappear after 5 to 10 minutes. No errors anywhere on the system.
This is CentOS 4 with FMS 2.0.4 and FMS 2.0.3.
Anyone else having similar problems or have suggestions to things that we could trouble shoot? I'm going to resort to straces soon.

Goto Frame Based On URL
Looking for a way to move to a certain frame or scene based on the url parameter/link followed to get to the movie.
IE
Visitor comes from a link such as
...mypage.html?scene=2
Once the movie loads the playhead moves to scene 2;
without the paramater the movie plays normally.
Is ther a way to read the url of the containing page from within the SWF?

Frame Based Loading
I am building a site using Flash MX, hosted by Media Temple. I want to have my load frame by frame. I want each frame to fully load before it is played. Basically the site will slowley build as the user is waiting for it to fully load, thus giving the effect of not having to wait. That is my main question, but I do have one more minor one. I have been uploading my .swf file with no preload script just to view it online and see how things a panning out. When I click the link to view, the pop up appears and the bg is white it stays white the entire time until the whole file loads. When I test the same file in Flash, it loads in order of the frames and the grey bg comes up then the loader bar, panel, etc. Shouldn't it at least load the movies bg when the pop up shows up online? I would have thought that it would have kinda preloaded it self in a sence? I am sure that I have made this all confusing at best, but any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Sorry so long winded.

Whats wrong? The thing hangs up in frame one. The bar wont activate, the percent counts off, but it wont say "Now Loaded" , in the dynamic box. Please Ive been up for two nights. Brush Tool In Flash 8 Keeps Dying On Me

Sometimes when i use my brush tool in Flash 8.. At times it'll work perfectly and draw my lines out.. but sometimes! It just dies on me! And Whenever i click and drag to draw.. It comes up.. but once i let go of the click.. it dissappears!!
I have to draw a full touching circle with the brush tool for the drawing to appear.. But if i wanted to draw straight lines with the brush tool, then i'm screwed! lol
Does anyone know a solution to this?
Also, I've checked my brush modes and it's always on normal!

ever had a problem that a flashsite you´ve made works perfectly on your computer, music and everything, but when you upload it 2 a server, listen to this, the music won´t work and changing movies in flash itself takes about 30 sec-5 min depending on the server (the movies r small, about 30 kb and i´m sitting on a 12mb/s line)
can it have something to do with the levels? i´m only working with one level.. (i don´t think it´s the servers i´ve tested on 3 different ones)

Targeting A Frame Based On A Variable Value?
I want to be able to target a specific frame of a movie clip, based on the value of a variable (set by the button a user chooses).
The Flash movie I'm creating is a jeopardy-style game, where the user clicks on a question within a certain category. I've set it up so that clicking on each button assigns 2 variables: "category" (either 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5) and "value" (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600). A movie clip is also loaded which I would like to jump to a frame to display the appropriate question, by targetting the frame label. I wanted to avoid manually creating 30 instances of a movie clip with different names. But I can't figure out how (or if it's possible to) target a dynamically specified frame label.
If anyone has any advice, I'd really appreciate it.
Position Based Frame Control

I have a slider at the bottom of my screen that I can grab. I want this slider to control where in time the movie is.
I am trying to set it up so the frame of the flash movie will be derived from the X position of the that slider. The problem I have is that I have been unable to find the syntax to set current frame of the whole project.
Any help would be greatly appreciated... or if anyone knows a better way to achieve this... that would work too.

Can You Go To And Stop On Frame Based On Variable?
Basically I have a preloader that's 100 frames long since it's an animation. What I need is for the movie clip to go to the frame of the percent, so if it's 50% I want to go to frame 50.
I'm using this with the MovieClipLoader functions and using the onLoadProgress to retrieve the percentage, which works fine, but the gotoAndStop doesn't seem to work. Here's my code:

As you can see I'm using functions to loop it around and load one image after another. There's more to this from it loading data from an XML but that's not important, all of that works perfectly. The preload function also works perfectly. The trace comes up with the percentage moving along up but the movie clip does nothing.
Anyone know what's going on? I can do the whole thing with script and if statements but that would take a bit longer to do if this isn't simple, though I might go that way for smoothness' sake.

Button To Sum Variables Then Go To Frame Based On Total

I have a script on a button set to calculate the sum of two variables and move the playhead to a designated frame depending on the result. I also have two movie clips containing 4 radio buttons each.
When the user selects a radio button from the 1st set and clicks the "Calculate" button, the variable x is set to a number between 1 and 4. Likewise when a radio button is selected from the second set and the "Calculate" button is clicked, the variable y is set to a number between 1 and 4.
When the calulcate button is clicked, the variable z is then set to = x+y. Depending on the value of z, I wish to goto a certain frame in the main movie. The variables appear to be set up properly when tested (i.e. returning the correct values) until I add the code to move the playhead. Code for the button appears below. How To Stop Script Based On A Frame Number
Anyone know the best way to stop your actionscript based on the frame you are in once inside a movieClip? Once I'm in frame 15 of my movieClip, I don't want any other actionscripts called until the user exits out of frame 15.

MC Frame Change Based On Slider Position
Hi guys,
I'm trying to make this thing that basically acts as a video 'scrub' - fast forwarding and rewinding the video depending on a bit of user interaction, in this case the movement of a slider bar - and despite the fact that its probably been done a million times, I can't find any examples of how its done.
I guess the easiest way to do it would be to put each frame of the video onto a frame inside a movieclip, and then have the slider control the playback of that movieclip, but, ah i dunno, maybe i'm searching with the wrong words.
Any suggestions on how this could be done would be greatly appreciated... am tearing my hair out here!

Goto Frame Based On Mouse Position
Hi..
I have a movie clip(instance:carousel) with 200 frame animation. I want it so that when mouse is on left side of the stage, carousel.prevFrame() and when its on the right side of the stage, carousel.nextFrame().
All works well with my code, but i would like to push this a bit further and add when mouse is further away from stage.center, it animates faster, skipping more frames and when its closer to the center, slows down and do nextFrame(). How could i achieve this effect?

Simple Frame Based Time Slider
I am trying to fix a playback controller that has a Play/Pause button and a scrubber. It divides the number of frames in the animation by the lenght of the slider bar to control the movie. The scrubber works fine going to the right, but when you drag it left, it wont go to the beginning frame. sometimes it will go very close, other times far away. You end up having to click and drag it two or three times to get to frame 1. I was told the original code came from a flash component from a few years ago, but I cant find anything like it. Its not for streaming, just short clips of embedded video or just boxes moving.

Hi, im doing the flash based email thing as seen here.
i did it all, but when i take the finished product,m and hit send, it does nothing. please help. i am attaching the .fla file alonng with this, but not the .php. here is what is on hte .php

Play To A Frame Based On Mouse Position...
i need to create an effect similar to this >> visit www.c-class.co.uk then click on C The Car...
i'm workin on a car site..i'll be getting the 3d renders as frames...wat i want iss the car to turn in the direction of the mouse pointer...except that it wont be 360 like the c-class site...it'll need to turn jus about 45degrees.
please help...
