Preloader Compatibility?

I have a question about preloaders in different browsers. I have a web page where external .swfs open in new windows. The preloader on the main page works fine but in all the browsers I've tried it in except for Internet Explorer 6.0 for Windows where it loads the .swf and then plays the preloader after it's already loaded instead of playing the preloader as the file loads. Here is the code:

onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
loading = _parent.getBytesLoaded();
total = _parent.getBytesTotal();
percent -= (percent-((loading/total)*100))*.25;
per = int(percent);
percentage = per+"%";
loadBar.gotoAndStop(per);
if (percent>99) {
_parent.gotoAndPlay(2);
}
}

The code is on the preloader movie clip and I got it off one of the tutorials on this site. The url of the page where problems occur is www.big-popcorn.com/newport7.html.

COMPATIBILITY?
is it true that Flash MX is totally incapable of running on Macs with anything less than OS X?!?! ...I just designed a website for a company and came to find out that more than a fourth of their visitors can't even download flash 6 plugin because they have mac os 9 or less. Is there any way around it?

Mac/PC Compatibility
Alright, I sure hope it's true that "no question is too stupid" here.

I made a Flash file on the PC, the .exe plays fine on the PC, but after publishing the Mac file (.hqx?), the Mac Player won't play it. It hangs up the Mac. It's a small file (5 megs). What are the common causes of this?

Anyone that can at least point me in the right direction, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

PC Compatibility
so my new website is finally up at a temporary URL (www.brandeis.edu/~herzfeld/rachel.h.griffin)

however, when using a PC, the pop up window does not appear. Is there a common compatibility issue I should know about?

Thanks in advance!

I use macromedia Flash MX but my buddy uses Adobe GoLive. If I create a file (or visa versa) can we edit them in either program. Are the Flash files (not the published files) compatible or are they marked as a certain program and only that program can open them.

MAC To PC Compatibility - PLEASE HELP
Hey guys, I've just completed a website for a band using an all flash header with the rest of the page being all HTML, using the getURL script on the buttons to connect the two. Anyway the site navigates and operates flawlessly on all Macs, however does not work at all on PC's can ANYBODY help me out because my ass is grass if I can't crack this code. You can view the site here to get what I'm saying.

Thanks a lot.

CS4 Mac Compatibility
I'm sure I'm asking the obvious, but since I'd like to upgrade to CS4, I want to make sure before I buy.

The system requirements for Flash CS4 (Mac) mention Mac OS X v10.4.11–10.5.4. I have OS X 10.5.5.

Does this make any difference?

Please reply when you get the chance.

Thank you,

Peter

PDF Compatibility
Hi:

I created an exe on a cd with flash, and using a a getURL script, it opens a pdf document in a browser window. Works fine on most machines, once you get past the basic default security settings in IE.

But on some machines, it takes up to five minutes to load. Anyone know why this might be? All that I tested had acrobat and recent versions of windows. Any Ideas why this is happening, and how I might fix it?

Thanks in advance.

PC - Mac Compatibility
Hello everyone,

I'm experiencing a rather painful problem in that my new Flash MX site works perfectly on PC but is (apparently) looking quite different on a Mac (I don't have one so can't verify this).

The site involves an HTML "enter" page that launches a 400 X 600 pop-up window containing the main SWF movie (embedded in an HTML page). Then, when users click on certain images within the movie (see the "BAGS" page) a new 400 x 400 pop-up is launched. The smaller pop-up contains ASP code to identify the correct SWF to load but that shouldn't confuse the Mac as it's processed on the server. Maybe it's the Javascript used for the pop-up generation or my HTML? If anyone has a Mac & PC and has suggestions that would be absolutely awesome!

By the way, it's my first FMX site... feedback welcome.

Thanks a million!

Swf's And Mac Compatibility
Hi everyone, hope one of the Flash Masters here can figure this one out ;)

I use a PC, Flash MX, to make my swfs.    I put a swf on my website and got a message from someone using Mac OSX saying they couldn't see the swf.   I published the swf back to Flash 5, made sure to use both IE and Netscape <param name> and <embed> tags in my code.  MY first instinct is that they don't have a Flash Player for Mac, or the player they do have is too old maybe.   Wouldn't they get an automatic message though asking them to download a flash player?  And does Macromedia automatically detect what type player they need?

If anyone reading this has a Mac, can you please check out this swf and see if you are having problems?

http://www.geocities.com/rat999ca/wishlist.html

Are there any special precautions I should be taking to ensure a swf can be seen by people with PC's, Mac's, Windows, Linux, IE, Netscape, etc?

I have been surprised in the past by the number of people with gecko-based browsers like mozilla, epiphany, firebird, etc, who said they couldn't see swfs I posted online.  It often turned out they either didn't have their flash player working or installed.  I thought Flash penetration was well over 90%.  What are your experiences as regards people being able to see your online swfs?  Is the answer to people not seeing your swfs nearly always that they don't have a valid flash player?

Any insights or comments on this issue would be most appreciated, thank you!

Still learning :D !

Mac Compatibility
Just created a HTML email with a flash 6 movie in it. Can anyone tell me why this doesn't appear to run on a MAC, apart from the obvious (MAC's r rubbish(joke)).

Compatibility Faq
Could anyone point me towards some good compatibility faq's or resources.

Im having problems with making my code work in older versions of flash, my main confusion is with what i should be supporting and what I should expect from flash.

Flash 4 & 5 Compatibility
I've heard a lot about flash 5 clips not playing on most peoples machines because they only have flash 4 players. Is this true? If so, can I save a file created in 5 so it will play on f4 players?

Swish 2.0 Compatibility
Am I wasting my time using swish? I have a couple of very
simple flash files on my site's home page.
http://users.utionline.net/~pp06364/
They work fine with Win98/IE6, however they are not loading
on some Win98/NS4.7x/NS6.2x computers I have access to. These same computers will load the flash files on other
sites. For example:
http://www.discovery.com/
I load the plug-ins on the NS4.7x machines but no
difference.
I use NetObjects Fusion 4 to build my page.
I like Swish and the affordable price, but I don't need a page with error messages that make me look like a loser.
(I can do that all by my self. hehe.)
I'm open to any thoughts, suggestions, and criticism. Don't assume that I know what I'm doing.
Thanks!

Apple Mac Compatibility?
Hi,
I am a student designer that has recently been hired to make a website for an environmental company. I finished the first draft and took it round, only to find that none of the images worked on their Macs! Having never used macs before, and testing the site extensively in both Communicator and IE6, I can't figure out why it didnt work...

Could it be because I linked the images with ./ instead of typing the whole local address? (something bung with macs file system and handling of links?)
or
Can't Macs run jpegs over the web (do they have to be saved in a special format???)

Any help from Mac users would be appreciated

Compatibility Issues..
I used check/radio boxes for my movie.. but they only work if the user has Flash 6 installed.. is there a way to bulk convert them to regular buttons? Does Macromedia publish the number of users for each version? I'd like to know the pecentage of Flash 6 users etc..

Ie Compatibility Problem?
Hi All

I have made a navigation in Flash that sits in a frameset (horrible, i know... ) it works perfectly in everything ns4.7 ns7 ie5.5 but not in ie6.0, well it works locally but not when live.

what happens is this, you click on a nav item, and you get an animated dropdown, it works great going down the nav. but going back up the nav, it starts to do the dropdown but then the movie just jumps to frame 1.

i thought the frameset was refreshing but i tested and it is not.

this only happens in ie6 and when viewing the pages live.

has anyone seen this or come across this before? its a really strange thing and quite frustrating, the nav is the simplest nav in the world!!

many thanx

Safari Compatibility?
Something I made in Flash MX works in all platforms but doesn't work in Safari 1.0 (the new browser for Macs). Does anybody know of any known bugs between Flash and Safari?

If you want to know the details, here they are:

I load variables into flash through an ASP page.. the code is something like this...

ActiveClient = _level0.ActiveClient;
loadVariables ("casebyclientp.asp", varHolder, "POST");

And in the casebyclientp.asp file the code looks something like this:

clientStr = Request.Form("ActiveClient")
' (do computation here)
Response.Write retval

The result is that none of the variables get loaded when I'm running it in Safari. In all other browsers it works fine. However, when I change first line of the ASP code to read as follows:

clientStr = "MyClient"

It works! However, I really need to get the clientStr from the Flash app because it can't be statically set to MyClient every time.. I have several different clients.

So the problem seems to be Flash passing variables using POST to an ASP document in Safari 1.0. I'm not SURE this is the problem, but it looks that way. Does anybody have any idea how I can fix this, or how I can work around it?

Thanks,

~jimmy.

Modem Compatibility
I've recently built a Flash 6 site: Superconductor

All of the content is defined in XML documents, and loaded dynamically when required. This includes JPEGS, MP3 soundtrack and TEXT. This system dramatically cuts down site pre-load time.

The problem is that the MP3 soundtracks, despite being relatively low-bandwidth, take up pretty much all of a 56k modem connection. This means that images (especially the photo gallery thumbnails) don't load before the timeout functions trip in...

The site uses Flash 6 local variable storage, so if you turn the music off, and re-load the page, it remembers. This solves the problem.

--------------------------

What I want to build is some kind of auto connection speed detection that dynamically disables music if the connection is slow. The most obvious way is to time how long the site takes to load, but if it's the second or third visit it will be buffered so this won't be valid, wheras the music is randomly selected so can change every time.

Does anyone know a good way to get a reliable estimate of network connection bandwidth ?

Thanks,
A.

Flahsplayer Compatibility
hi again

i just started using flash mx and i noticed that when i export to flashplayer 6, the movie wont play on fp5.

ive also noticed that some movies done in mx dont export right when exported to fp5, so far mainly masking stuff goes wrong.

my question here is... should i just assume that most ppl run fp6 these days and just export to fp6 and prompt the few who might not have upgraded yet to do so ?

that would prolly work fine unless alot of ppl are still running fp5 i dont wanna hassle too many ppl to upgrade their flash player and they also might just close the page upon being prompted and not bother.

thanx

Compatibility With Flash 5
ok here's a pretty simple bit of code I wrote.

_global.spraying;
_global.oldX;
_global.oldY;

_root.createEmptyMovieClip( "graf", 1 );

_root.onMouseDown = function() {
_global.spraying = true;
_global.oldX = _root._xmouse;
_global.oldY = _root._ymouse;
}

_root.onMouseUp = function() {
_global.spraying = false;
}

_root.onEnterFrame = function() {
if(spraying){
with (_root.graf){
lineStyle( 20, 0xff00ff, 80);
moveTo(_global.oldX, _global.oldY);
lineTo( _root._xmouse, _root._ymouse);
}
}
_global.oldX = _root._xmouse;
_global.oldY = _root._ymouse;
}

My question is, what is it in this code that makes it not workin flash 5, and is it possible to make it work in flash 5 or not?

Font Compatibility
I have another problem if anyoen can help me.

If it matters,I have Flash MX v6.0

PC And MAC Compatibility Issues
Plz, if u have relevant info on this matter, links, past cases, etc, share it plz

www.ingreme.com - the site is up and running and it goes smooth in PC's using explorer 6 and flash 7.0 player. In Mac (that's one more reason to hate them O_o jk) it has strange and weird bugs. If u enter first time, no text and no pre loading... if u close explorer and go again it goes nice but pre-loaders bars go nuts... this is very weird and all help we can get at this point is VERY welcome.

The site is beeing coded by res.solutions (www.res.solutions.pl) by the way they are doing an awsome job so far, but this issue has to be fixed fast and we are trying to use all foruns that we know of.

Thanks for any info on this,

Mac>PC Type Compatibility
I did some Web page layouts for someone I'm working with in another city.
I used a combination of film clips and type... Helvetica Neue Bold
He wrote back:"PC is loading default type" "Can You break up the type?"
I said: "What if I load the typeface into the library?"
"I can't be sure that's gonna work." Said he.
And I'm asking myself: "Why not?"
He is using Dreamweaver and allocating a window on the page for my Flash animations and type.

Quicktime? Compatibility
Sorry for this annoying question, I just cant remember if a mov file embedded into a flash movie will show if the viewer doesn't have Quicktime installed...

Otherwise, what is the safest and best video format to go with when using video on the web?

Cool thanx

Mac Vs PC Compatibility Problems?
hey all. ive always known that there is a difference in speed/processing when viewing flash on a mac vs a pc. but, im currently in the debugging stages of a website, and ive discovered that the site runs perfectly on a pc, but totally screws up on a mac. the site is fairly heavy on actionscript, utilizing a lot of prototyping and dynamic swf loading... it seems that on macs, alot of the sub-navigation swf's never even get loaded, while others do get loaded but get placed in the wrong positions, etc. ive checked/installed the latest flash player on all browsers, as well as checked the site on multiple machines (on both platforms). the problems still persist and i cannot figure out what it can be! so, in short, are there any significant differences in the way that actionscript is interpreted by a pc versus a mac? additionally, are there any documented references that i could check to find out what these are? im totally stumped and starting to get very frustrated! thanks for any help. cheers.

Player Compatibility 6/7
We're working on a project at the moment that requires Flash 7 for only one section - so here's the question.

Say you create a hub in Flash 6, then load a Flash 7 .swf into it - provided you have the Flash 7 player - this should work, right?

Most of our features work when viewing this scenario in Flash player 6 - but in 7 it breaks.

??

Version Compatibility
I used a few scripts from this site for my new website.

Problem is that they cause compatibility problems.
When I want my spring button(s) in the top row to work correctly i need to publish in Flashplayer 6 format see this movie . But then my scripted gallery is very slow.

When I want to speed that up, I check the "use runtime bitmap caching" option, to make it run smooth. That works fine but now my spring button won't spring see the flashplayer 8 version

SWF Encrypt And Compatibility
Have any of you used SWF Encrypt ( http://www.amayeta.com/software/swfencrypt/ ) or a similar product to protect your Flash work? I'm evaluating it for use with our site and I'm wondering what the chances are of Flash files encrypted with it not working correctly under new versions of Flash Player when they come out.

Can anyone comment on this? Have you heard of any problems with encrypted SWF files when previous upgrades to Flash Player were relesased?

Flash Compatibility
Hi,

I created a flash document and uploaded it to a server; however, some people were not able to view it. I realised that the problem was that they did not have flash 8 installed. My document is designed in Flash 8.

Does anyone know any way to get it to work in previous versions?

Any help will be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Actionscript 2.0 Compatibility
Hello all,

I have the following code that works in AS 1.0, but not in AS 2.0:

Code:
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {

Y=(getProperty("_root.Norman",_y)-(_root.top))*(_root.factor);
newY = oldY - (Y+oldY)/(_root.ease);

setProperty("_root.WindowIN.Nadine",_y,newY);
oldY=newY;
}
"Norman" is a scrollbar, this AS is placed on a moviescript so that the scrollbar moves the movieclip. I'm pretty sure that it is this snippet that isn't working. I'm thinking it's a case sensitivity issue because I know they added that. Unfortunately, I still haven't been able to figure it out. If it's obvious to anyone else, I would really appreciate your assistance. Thanks!

Browser Compatibility
Hi to all,

Have just about finished this site and it seemed to be working just fine. Did all my testing on Safari only to find that there are a few bugs when viewed with IE or firefox (and pos others!) Have no idea what might be going wrong. The problem is that content is sticking around when it should go away... after the site loads, once any button is released, whatever is currently loaded should go away and new content should load. The site is animated purly with actionscript. Any advice would be great.

Again, everything works perfect when viewed on safari so check that to other browers.

Thanks

[MX] FrontPage Compatibility
Please help me troubleshoot my issue: I have added buttons created in Macromedia Flash to my FrontPage contents frame. Browser Compatibility
Hi!
I'm having a hard time with a web site I'm developing for an artist friend of mine.
It's my first Flash site so I'm bumping with some issues I can't resolve. I think it's all about browser compatibility, because what works on IE 7 doesn't in Firefox 2.0 and vice-versa.
The first and most annoying happens in Firefox: I have a main movie where I've placed the navigation system for the entire site; from there I've made the contents load on top of that movie using a load external movieclip behavior; most of those external swf's are slide presentations with a navigation system based in buttons; the problem is that when those movie clips are loaded in Firefox the buttons perform their rollover effects perfectly, they even play the sound I've ad to them, but they do not execute their on release function; this happens only on the first click and then at the second time you click them they work fine ( I discovered that clicking first anywhere on the movieclip makes them work too) and after the movie is in the browser's cache, when you load it next time it works fine too; this is very strange and it doesn't happen on IE 7...
The other thing is with IE 7: I've made used of a loader movieclip with a progressbar (standard progressbar component with some style changes) that loads the slide presentations; in Firefox it works great but in IE the progressbar shows up and then goes away without animating the progress and leaving a blank screen during the download time...
Please HELP! I'm driving crazy with this stuff!!!
Thank you!

PS: you can visit the site here and see what I'm talking about: http://www.josebatistamarques.com - you'll have to choose the Portuguese site because the English is still very incomplete; just navigate to any of the expo individuais or obras and enter any of them
