Problems With External .txt File Text Format And Links

Hi all,

New to posting in this forum although have found a lot of useful information through searches but not this time!!(I'm sure someone will prove me wrong!!). Here's my problem....

I am just experimenting at the moment but the situation is that i have several dynamic text boxes linked to .txt files. The problem i have is that of formatting this text.
The dynamic text boxes have been set to the font i wish to use and the font has been embedded, html render has been enabled and i have the following code on the frame where the dynamic text boxes appear:

loadText = new loadVars();
loadText.load("home.txt");
loadText.onLoad = function(success) {
if (success) {
// trace(success);
text_home.html = true;
text_home.htmlText = this.dynContent;
}
};

so the text all loads in fine except for its format. I was wanting to use a specific font for this loaded text but even thought the dynamic boxes have fonts embedded the font is not showing on a browser??

Also within the .txt files i have links to URL's and have used <a href="whatever" target="_blank"> but in some cases the links i want to be in a new window wont open in a new window but some do even though the html is the same, apart from the ones that don't work are in a list using <p> </p> to list them (can that make a difference?)

Anyone know of a solution??

David

I could attach .fla if that would help??

External Text File Format Question
I'm using a txt file to load the names of the people here in my office. These include the email link and their name and everything works a treat.

The problem I have is with the people at the end of the list. If you roll past their name the cursor still thinks it's linked to them and will pop up your email client. Is there a way to tell flash that the end of the text file is actually the end and not where the text field actually ends? I have the textfield oversized to allow for additional names.

How To Format External Text File To Show In Three Separate Columns Through Text Area?
Hullo everyone!

Could anyone suggest a piece of advice to visualize the following idea?

I should like to import an external .txt file into flash and display it by means of a text area component, which would take the better part of the screen and be skinned to fit the rest of the page design. The text ought to be formatted by way of an external .css file. Images are optional.

I can do all this allright, but what I should like to have is the text formatted to be displayed in three separate columns. The idea for this naturally comes from the Flash version of the Macromedia Edge newsletter.

I should be most thankful if anyone cared to come up with a solution.

[MX04] Problem With Text Format From External File
Hi
Not sure if this should go in the html or the actionscript forum, but since my knowledge is quite newbee I thought i'd drop it into this one instead.

My problem is this. When my 'multiline' Dynamic Text box (with wrap) wraps to the next line, it indents the external content (from.txt file) to the left. How do I stop this? (SEE ATTACHED IMAGE)

Basically, I have a Dynamic Text box with the following action script applied in the first frame it appears.

code: myData = new LoadVars();
myData.onLoad = function() {
myText_txt.html=true;
myText_txt.htmlText = this.myVariable;
};
myData.load("notice1.txt");

My .txt file contains the following

myVariable=<p><font color="#cc0000"><b>Training Course</b></font></p>
<p>If interested please call someone who can help on ext. 458745 between 9 and 5 Monday to Tuesday</p>

It's driving me nuts.....

Web Links In Text From External .txt File?
'ello...

i have some .swf files which act as news archive pop-ups, containing text which is loaded in from an external .txt file. i put some web links within that text, but they only open within the pop-up window, which is only about 300 x 300 and isn't resizeable, so that's no good!

am i allowed to put web links in a .txt file for loading into .swf? should i be putting "_blank" somewhere in the text file to make sure they open in another window, or is there some other way i can make sure it does that?

thanx 4 any help

Loading External Text File Into Flash Using Links From Dynamic Text Field Link?
I am using a dynamic text field to load in .txt files with html tags. I have a couple "click here" type links that I would like to use to load a different .txt document into the same dynamic text field instead of a url link like it does default. Is this possible? I'm sure I could put a button over the text since its not long enough to need a scrollbar but I would like a more dynamic and flexible way to do this if its possible.

I want to include hyperlinks as well. I have some crude action script written which works until I nest it. Is their some source out there to accomplish this? The problem I've had is when the code I'm using is referenced within the timeline but it is nested a below the top.

I have two scenes escena 1 and escena nested. It works in the first and not in the other.

Please let me know if someone can help me take this the rest of the way.

Can You Help Me Format My External TXT File?
I've been using a great tutorial on FK
that's taught me to import an external TXT file
for use as content in a scrollable text box.

http://www.flashkit.com/tutorials/In...32/index.shtml

It's great so far, but I would like to know how to
change the style of the text that is imported halfway
down the textbox. I have a few paragraphs that I'd like to
title in BOLD text but still have the rest normal. I'd Also to ad a URL link from this text to another site.

Is there an easy way to preformat the text before it gets
imported as a variable...So far I'm using "notepad" to
create the TXT file.

I also understand that flash5 recognises HTML codes in it's text boxes. Found that out by posting in the wrong section..is there a flash 4 equivilant?

Help me get some style into my scrollable textbox !!!
PLEASE

How To Format External Text?

I am loading some text from a text file, but:
the list of variables (&something=otherthing) is not separated, so, how could i make new lines, or format it in any way? when i put a tag (for example a <b> bold text tag) it just shows in the text, as a part of the text.

and, the UIScrollBar doesnt allways show, sometimes its there, sometimes just in blank, even though there is text there, that is bigger then the box.

does anyone know those solutions?
please help me on this....

Format Of A Text File
Hello,

I have two arrays "array1" and "array2". I load the values in array1 by reading images1.txt and load the values in array2 by reading images2.txt.

The following is the code for reading the text from file "images1.txt" and loading into array1.

Images1=a1.jpg|a2.jpg|a3.jpg|a4.jpg|a5.jpg|a6.jpg

m = new LoadVars();
m.load('images1.txt', this);
m.onLoad = function(ok) {
//Builds the file array
if (ok) {
array1 = this.Images1.split("|");
}
};

This works fine. Similarly I read the text from "images2.txt" and load the array2.

Now my question is Can I load both array1 and array2 by reading from a single text file? If so, what should be the format for my combined text file.

Shown below is the format for my individual text files.

"images1.txt"
Images1=a1.jpg|a2.jpg|a3.jpg|a4.jpg|a5.jpg|a6.jpg

"images2.txt"
Images2=b1.jpg|b2.jpg|b3.jpg|b4.jpg|b5.jpg|b6.jpg

Thoughts?

Format Text In Txtfield From XML File - Help
ok, so i have a "well-formed" xml file with various information in it.

xml file snippet/example:
------------------------------------------
< section name="Introduction" >
< part >Paragraph one of the introduction.< /part >
< part >Paragraph two of the introduction.< /part >
< /section >
< section name="Setup" >
< part >Paragraph one of the setup.< /part >
< part >Paragraph two of the setup.< /part >
< part >Paragraph three of the setup.< /part >
< /section >
------------------------------------------
(spaces added here in order to preserve formatting in post)

ive managed to import the xml into flash and display it in a dynamic text field. what i want to do is format the text in multiple ways. for example, i want the "section names" to be size 12 and bold and a certain color. i want the paragraphs under each section to be size 11, non-bold and another color. once the "page" is formatted properly i already have a movieclip set up to scroll it up and down.

how do i format individual nodes as they are written into the "main body" of the dynamic text field. i was thinking i could create a new field for each new node and format each one depending on it's attribute name (is that the correct terminology). but i couldnt figure out how to make each one fit the amount of information properly without setting the size of the dynamic filed first. (if i want to stack them on top of eachother (bottom of one to top of the next), the actual size of the fields need to change based on how much text is in them.) i should mention that im doing this for 15 different xml files (and 15 different flash movies) that are formatted the same way but do not necessarily have the same "section names" for example. so one may be called "introduction", but on the next one it could not even include an "introduction" section at all.

i was trying to do it by just using a graphic with text in it but the text is very long, over 4000 characters, and so it scrolls very slowly in that format. is there a way to optimize large areas of text that i dont know about? (i need it to look anti-aliased unfortunately) ...

any help would be greatly appreciated. im kinda stumped right now.

thanks,
-Oly

Format Text Loaded From XML File
Hello all,

The text for my website is loaded from an external XML file which obviously makes editing the content of the website easy.

However, I can't find a way to format the text that I load.

In Flash, I would usualy use HTML tags ( <b>text</b> and so on ) but these tags don't work from an XML file.

Does anybody know whether it is possible to format text loaded from an XML file? The main thing that I want to be able to do is insert 'line breaks' as at the moment all of my text is in one big block.

External .txt File To GetURL Links
I would like to import about 17 hyperlinks from a simple text file and assign them to various buttons within the movie. There are probably better ways to lay the foundation, but my brain is going numb.

The logic is as simple as this:

external text file with URL links as variables. (they change)

load the variables into the movie

take those variables and assign them to a button which uses getURL

Right now I'm manually typing in the URL in the getURL command for every button and that's getting really tedious. And if the URL's change, that's definitely gonna s--k.

Appreciate any advice, code hints, etc. I can see it, but I just cannot seem to execute it...

Thanks in advance,

Load External Links File (xml)
I'm building a Flash website that will have a "links section" (original, i know.) My problem is that I am attempting to make the section dynamically-loaded so that when the owner of the site wants to change his links he can do so just by editing the external file.

I know VERY LITTLE about XML or how to use Flash with XML, but I would be forever grateful if someone could help me figure out how to use something like the following XML structure to build a movie clip (of movie clips???) that will act as the links section.

XML:
<link>
<src>http://www.flashkit.com</src>
<desc>The Flash Source</desc>
</link>

I know that I need a generic movie clip that will have a button on it with the getURL() function and a textbox, but how to load the external XML is beyond my intermediate Flash knowledge.

Thanks for ANY help you can give.

Defining Links In An External File
well, I am wondering about 2 things actually (and please bear with me these might be ridiculously simple but I am fairly new to flash...)

1. Is it at all possible to use externally defined variables in a button or does it *have* to be in a movie clip?

2. How would I go about defining hyperlinks in an external file, and would the code look something like (in a frame for a movie clip that serves as a button)...
loadVariables ("links.txt",_targetMC)
_targetMC.onRelease = function() {
getURL(varlink)
}
I probably got it completely (or mostly) wrong, which is why I would appreciate any advice of how to do it the "right way"

Help With Format Problems In External .txt To Dynamic Text Scroll
Hi. I was wondering if someone can help! I am creating a database for a project at work. I currently have files that were originally .rep (extension) files. They were converted to a .txt format the formating is still there ( doesnt look like garbled text) What I wanted to do is externally link a dynamic window and scroll using the (UIscrollbar) flash 8. So I did.- My question is- How do I keep the formatting (layout) of the report (original .rep file)... Because when I do look at the text file it looks like the original. when I link it to the Dynamic text box- It looses all formatting--- It looks all "left justified". I need the view of the report to be an exact replica of the original. ----- and if anyone can help me with this it would be appreciated. Here is another question.. once that report is working properly is there any way to use like a "highlighter" effect on certian text the user has questions on. (example) "named spelled wrong". can that user select the text that is wrong and highlight the mistake in a color of there choice... (like proofreading)... need multiple high lights-- i know Microsoft word has like a highlighter option... but I prefer working with "real programs"... haha..

thank you so much for your help. hopefully this will work.. please let me know if anyone has answers-

Loading A Text File, Some Character And Format Problems.
Hi,

FIRST can someone tell me how to stop the html actually working in the following, I want people to see the code. Then I will edit this and hopefully get an answer to my real questions, thanks.
********************

I have 2 problems with a html formatted textfile I am loading.

Code:
AlbumInfo=<FONT SIZE="24"><FONT COLOR ="#FF0000"><B>WIND OF CHANGE</B></FONT><BR><FONT SIZE="16"><FONT COLOR="#000000">Released on A & M Records 1972</FONT>
problem 1 is the "&" character, I understand why its a problem, how do you get it to display?

second which I do not understand is that the <B>WIND OF CHANGE</B> causes the file not to display.

and now some mx advice as I suspect I may be stuck in my old flash 5 ways.
I am loading the text file into a mc like this

Code:
loadVariables("wind1.txt", "_root.BigBox.TrackList");
in the mc TrackList is a textbox looking for var AlbumInfo.
is their a better way in mx?

thanks mark

Creating Multiple External Links For One SWF File
Hello,

Does anyone know how I can manually link my .swf banner to specified links without having to edit the actual .fla file each time creating a totally new banner?

Here is my problem in more detail:

I have a bunch of affiliates who use the same exact flash banner that I created, but they all have to link to a different URL. My problem is that, whenver I have to update the banner, I then need to change the .fla file, and then create about 100 new banners to replace the old banners... this it quite time consuming and very irritating!

I'm wondering if there is a way to just link a .swf file, the way anyone would by just adding a link to a .gif banner, ie:

<a href="http://www.linkname.com"><img src="imagefile.gif"></a>

is there a way i can do it like this:

<a href="http://www.linkname.com"><img src="imagefile.swf"></a>

i know this way does NOT work.. but is there some way like this that I can use to link the same banner to different URL's?

My goal is to have ONE .swf banner for ALL my affiliates... but each one to have its own link...

if anyone knows of a way this can be done, that would be great! Please let me know..

thanks

GetURL Function Using External File For Links
Ok, here's the situation:

Need to design a navigation structure that allows for the URLs to be updated easily without re-compiling a FLA file. I've setup a XML file with the following format:

<LINK linkurl="http://www.anydomain.com" linktext="Site Name" linkalt="We Rock the Llama!" linktarget="_blank" />

Question is, how do I setup the getURL function to use this external data?

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

Tks much

Links From External ASP File Breaking Dynamic Txt Box
i'm using ACCESS DB to spit out scores of my univeristy's recently played athletic games. on the ASP page i've got all the game info from multiple games being stored in a variable to pass to my flash movie. working great. all the scores load into a textfield that i scroll. also working great. now i need to go back to the string being passed to flash to add a link so that you can click on the game score and go to another page to view that game's write-up. the textfield loads fine until it hits the first "<a href""> code and it stops loading.

My String - all one line:
getetad="<b>"&Recordview("etad")&"</b>"&"<br>"&"<b>"&Recordview("fhuteam")&"</b>"&" vs."&"<br>"&Recordview("team")&"<br>"&"<a href=http://www.fhu.edu/athletics/index_ScBrd_Rslts.asp?varRes="&Recordview("ID")&"</a>"&Recordview("FHUresult")&"</a>"&"<br><br>"

if you remove the bolded section it works fine. thanks for the help. this my first post, hope i got it right!
