Should I Upgrade To Cs3 And As3
I currently use flash8 and am just about getting by. I am learning oop actionscript and I feel confident enough using actionscript 2 but I see alot of sites and posts about cs3 and feel like I should maybe make the effort and move up but the learning curve seems steep do you think I should graudually learn whilst using flash8 or should I take the plunge??? I hear a lot about cs3 having improved performance but I didnt think that was an issue with flash 8.
Any advice would be welcome and if you know of any simple tutorials that would be nice too.
I dont know if I am posting this in the right place suppose if not someone will move it.
Cheers in advance

Upgrade To MX
Hi All - I've been using Flash 5 for about a year now and am about to upgrade to MX. I know that the OOP works differently and there are some changes to do with ActionScript. Can anyone reccommend books and/or sites that will ease my transition from the old to the new? Thanks in advance . . .

CS3 Upgrade
Has anyone checked out the international prices on CS3?
I can hardly believe how badly the UK is getting fleeced.
I'm upgrading from CS1 Creative Suite and Studio 8 to CS3 Design Premium. In the US that's $599.00 dollars, but in the UK pounds it works out to £703.82. Take the exchange rate into account and UK customers are paying...
1,384.51 USD!!!
Sales tax in the UK is 17.5% but the Adobe price hike is a whopping 231% - W T F?

Does This Mean I Should Upgrade?
Good afternoon,
my first post! I have been getting back into developing in Flash, and I have MX from 2002. I've been overhauling my portfolio, and I can't get some basic menu stuff to work.
The idea is you click a button, an .swf starts playing right below it. I'm posting the offending script below:
Code:
_root.onEnterFrame=function(){
_root.createEmptyMovieClip("screen", this.getNextHighestDepth());
//we have 5 variables that need to be recvd by this, but for right now just play the test move
screen.attachMovie("dracula.swf", screen.getNextHighestDepth());
screen._x=0;
screen._y=600;
screen._height=50;
screen._width=60;//arbitrary for now
}
This is on the same frame and layer for now, just to make sure it works. I can't alter some of the portfolio clips because they were made long ago and some of the source files are lost.
I wonder if this just doesn't work in Flash 6. But before I cough up $200 I wanted the opinion of those who know what they're doing. Thanks very much!

CS4 Upgrade
:clock; Hello, I was wondering what the general consensus was regarding CS4 and if there were any compelling reasons to upgrade from CS3? For me, $599 is a hefty price to upgrade and one that I can't really afford unless there are compelling reasons/functionality in CS4?
Thanks in advance!

The only thing I can remember is I had to enter the same FMS 3.0 license key during FMS 3.0.1 installation. Can anybody help?

Should I Upgrade To MX?
<<<Should I get MX?>>>
Hi, I know most will say OF COURSE! but I can't figure out complicated AS and I only use Flash for animation to promote my video editor website and also do the occasional helping of friends.
I know MX can do video, so that's a big plus, but is it easier for an idiot like me to use AS in MX? I'm looking for ease of use to make my site better.
If so, then I'll get it, but I just don't have time to learn major AS and learn all the 3D stuff I wanna do and also keep up with video tech learning curve and also have time to get a pint with friends/see the sun.
Thanks
-Odeon3
p.s. I know that no one may answer this, but how much do you think a really nice custom flash site costs? (like a 2advanced.com or billyharveymusic.com)

Help..way To Get Rid Of Flash Upgrade Pop Up?
Hi, I made some flash for my work and when I showed it to my boss it keeps popping up with that upgrade box for her to upgrade. How can I make it so that upgrade box doesn't come up without of course her upgrading( since she doesn't want that popup to bother people who have a lower version of flash and don't want to upgrade)..? When she checks out other sites with flash...like subaru.com, no pop up comes up...
What do I do?? Thank you for any help!

Upgrade Question
Hey, I just upgraded to Flash MX as well as Windows XP Pro and I'm having a problem. All my flash movies I created at 24 FPS are running really slow now. They look like they're running at 12 frames or less per second. Has anyone experienced anything like this before?
I used to run Flash 5 on Windows 2000 Pro (same computer) and never had these problems. Everything ran really fast until I upgraded. Any help you could offer me would be greatly appreciated.

Upgrade Problems
I have been working on flash for about 4 years now and fortunately have never seen this problem before but of course its hitting us big the past week.
People are upgrading to flash on our site but then are presented with a white box instead of flash content. Flash on other sites work fine and the clients are getting pissed. I know there are a bunch of cache problems with upgrading and problems with going back to that same site. Does anyone have any info on this ?

Now is there a way I can have it setup so when they see my flash it shows a message that tells them to download Flash 8, ive seen this done before with certain flash sites.

Is It Worth It To Upgrade To AS3?
Hi Everyone,
I hope this is an appropriate question for this forum.
I've been working as a freelance Flash developer for the past 4 years, and have done well for myself building sites and applications in AS2. Most of the projects I've worked on have seen me as the sole developer, so necessity has never encouraged me to make the jump to AS3.
I'm going to be getting out of freelancing and seeking full-time employment in the next few months. I've already ordered Colin Moock's Essential Actionscript 3.0, but my question is this:
How prevalent is AS3 in the professional development community as a whole? Is everything new that is being built in AS3? Would I be better served to ditch AS2 all together and focus exclusively on AS3?
I know that there are huge performance, organizational and OOP enhancements in AS3, which I'm sure are a lot more important when working on a development team then when developing alone. Because of that, I'm assuming it's already become the standard at most Flash development companies, but I guess I was hoping to get some feedback from people who are currently working for companies in the field so that I can gauge how important my proficiency in AS3 be before I begin interviewing.
Thanks for any feedback!

Roll Over Upgrade From AS 2.0
Ok, I'm having trouble with using some AS 2 code in a AS 3 project for a client.
Can someone help?!
I have used this code in the past for rollovers. What do I need to adjust to make it work in AS 3. All my attempts have failed even after searching the forums. I will post again after its resolved so others can find help in this.
Thanks, here is the AS 2 code.
stop();
this.onRollOver = function() {
rewind = false;
this.play();
};
this.onRollOut = function() {
rewind = true;
};
this.onEnterFrame = function() {
if (rewind == true) {
prevFrame();
}
};
Any ideas for AS 3?

Upgrade CS3 -> CS4 Question
Within the last two months, I upgraded to flash CS3, unaware that CS4 would be coming out so soon. Now that I found out that CS4 is out, I remembered some sort of offering from Adobe whereby you could upgrade for free if you had recently upgraded your version of flash.
Unfortunately, I can't find any specifics on this anywhere, and I'm wondering if it's still practiced. I'm really hoping I didn't just trick myself into believing this is real, because CS4 looks pretty darn good, but I'm not ready to upgrade again so soon.

Cost Of Upgrade
OK, I'm a beginner or worse. So I bought Flash Basic as a start. Now I need to upgrade to Flash Pro, and I am told there is no upgrade path, but must buy full edition.
Seems to me that over $600 is a lot to pay to be able to generate flv files just so that I can embed them into Captivate swf files with player controls.
Since Basic is the same software program and only the access code (serial numbers or whatever) control access to the aditional features, I don't see why Adobe would not be satisfied to get anothe $299 from me.

How To Upgrade A Large RIA To AS3
Hi,
I've written a large RIA in AS2 with >10,000 lines of Actionscript in various class files. I could really do with the performance inprovements of AS3 but there seem to be very few resources or books out there to help.
Has anyone found any good guides to converting projects to AS3? What I really want is not a guide that tries to teach me AS3 as if I know no actionscript, rather one which says this AS2 structure or these statements are now done in this way...
Any recommendations would be gratefully received! Thanks

Upgrade/Install Help
I'm currently attempting to install my newly purchased version of Flash CS3, which I bought as an upgrade from my former Flash 8 Pro. Unfortunately, when it asks for my Flash 8 Pro serial number, I put it in and it rejects it. My Flash 8 Pro number was the serial number for my entire Macromedia Suite, and it in itself was an upgrade from Flash MX. Has anyone else run into this/a similar problem? What is the cause? Is there any way around it? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Will Not Install Upgrade In XP
I am NOT one of the lucky millions that has enjoyed a fautless XP Installation. After several hours of rerunning the items and constantly rebooting between everything suggested in "Adobe Flash Player AxtiveX Setup Failed to Install ,,, see tn_19166" I must plead here for help or pay $119 to have a Microsoft technician remotly diagnose a system that has run fine untill this mandatory Flash upgrade requirement was released.
Some basic Q's: How can one REALLY tell from the "System Tray" if any of the items uses Flash before running Uninstaller? How can you REALLY tell if the uninstaller did a complete job, beyond just reporting "Completed"? How can one REALLY know if any flash related programs have not started automatically after a restart? What is the significance of "Version Test for Adobe Flash Player" not printing anything - can a really old version still be there? What is recommended for Firewall and Pop-up blocker settings during an Install attempt (nothing is mentioned that I can find, yet certain steps behave differently when these are changed)?
How about a tn_ that gives a MORE DETAILED and complete step by step procedure for troubleshooting?

Need A Script Upgrade To AS 2.0
So I guess it's been a while since I've worked in Flash...
I've been using this script from Flash to the Core for quite some time. I'm finally re-designing my site and found that one of my most used scripts doesn't work anymore. Anyone know how to do this in AS 2.0? What this does is play along the targeted timeline when the mouse is hovering. When the mouse leaves the hot spot, the timeline plays in reverse to the beginning. Here's the code:
On the root timeline I use:
my_mc.onEnterFrame = function() {
if (fade) {
this.nextframe();
} else {
this.prevframe();
}
};
then I have a button where I use:
on (rollOver) {
fade = true;
}
on (rollOut, dragOut) {
fade = false;
}
my_mc is a 15 frame MC that changes a shape's color (or something...)

Upgrade Path?
I work at a small University media company. We bought Flash Media Server 2 over the summer, but our server hardware wasn't ready until very recently. We haven't installed or activated the software yet. I went to the Flash Media Server 3 page, and the upgrade path seems very confusing. Is there an upgrade path that would work in my case? Is it different because we bought FMS through our school's computer store? Thanks.

Trouble With IE Upgrade Fix
Starting early next year, Internet Explorer and Windows will be patched/updated to change the way that embedded media will be handled. Each embedded object that references content from an external file will now result in a warning and prompt for the user to view and enable the embedded content. In short, if you're using the OBJECT, EMBED, or APPLET tag, your visitors will soon be looking at warning messages instead of your Java, multimedia, or Flash content.
Javascript workarounds for several media types can be found at the following:
http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/activecontent/
I've tried applying these solutions at:

Anyone try the solutions yet? Why don't mine work? Thanks

Actionscript Upgrade.. No Different?
I have been working on a game, so far it's some 1,000 lines of code, and I just upgraded to actionscript 2, to try to enhance performance (game running at 20fps when I want it to be at least 50 on my computer)
It use to run at 9fps when I used Flash MX 2004 I think it was, and it went up to 20fps or so on the new Flash 8... I am also using a better render (medium instead of low)... which is making me very happy.
The main question is, How come I havn't gotten any syntax errors from upgrading my code? Also, why has the fps not increased any...
Does the code not really 'need' to be formated the way AS2 says it needs to be??? But if it were, it would run faster??

Upgrade To Flash 8 Or CS3

The client can give me access to Flash 8 and is willing to upgrade to CS if needed. The project involves alot of XML feeds and flash will be used as a frontend display on a website, animations will race across the screen to different points depending on XML values. Which version do you think would be best for this?

Whether To Upgrade Or To Wait
Hi Ultrashock,
I know there is a lot of talk about the Adobe Macromedia acquisition but I have a question that I need to ask.
I purchased Studio MX 2004 when it came out and now Studio 8 is out. I noticed on Macromedia's site that they keep saying that it's a special selling price of 399 for the upgrade. They kept on bumping that date and now it is Dec 31, 2005 but they say "End of year, End of suite offer".
Does this mean that they will stop selling the Studio 8 upgrade and you will only be able to upgrade with an Adobe-Flash bundle which is quite a bit more expensive?
Will I be able to wait until the new year to purchase the upgrade or do I need to but it before the end of the year?
Any extra insight would be great.

Have you already gone all CS3 crazy, or do you plan to soon? If you've upgraded, have you noticed any differences in speed from Flash 8 to CS3? Faster? Slower? Is it worth the added features? Discuss!
I'll start off by saying all the new features are great except the new AS editor is incredibly slow, and switching between open fla tabs also takes a while to update.

Not Quite Sure Whether It Is Good Idea To Upgrade From 5 To MX
Well, they (Macromedia) tell you how many new features there are in MX. But are they really so useful? So far I was not able to find anything that great. On the contrary - I found some problems.
Consider this (for instance):
I live in Czech republic and (of course) speak Czech. Our alphabet has some special characters that are not in standard western characters sets. So we have to use our own fonts. There were problems already in Flash 5 - some fonts, that worked in other applications like Word or Photoshop simply did not work in flash. But in Flash MX, when I use dynamic text handled like HTML, no such fonts work! If I export movie as Flash 5 movie, everything is O.K. - if exported as Flash 6, all special characters simply disappear.
In many aspects I was dissappointed - for example, I expected better support of HTML in textfields (I mean a possibility to use more tags - just very, very simple table please! etc.) - nothing.
So, can you (anybody) tell me at least one reason why I should upgrade?
P.S.: This post sounds rather negative and "anti-Macromedia" but I am not - I think that Flash 5 si great tool and now I really do not know what new benefits MX delivers. Besides - If I do not solve the special characters problem I will not be able to use MX anyway.

Eval Problems W/ Upgrade

I have some multidimensional arrays that I construct in for loops. I was creating them using eval("unitarray"+i)=new Array(); but in MX I get the whole 'left side of the assignment operator' error. Anybody know an equivalent way to create dynamically named arrays that'll work here?
