Generator Or Flash MX ?
Hi,
I m working on a project which involves lot of database interaction.

Generator Approach:
I came to know that Flash MX does not support generator objects, which means i have to save it as flash 5 file and all the new features of Flash mx will not work.
However, i will be directly interacting with the database in this case.

XML Approach:
In this, i can ask a servlet to dish out data in xml format
from the database. But here i'll have no direct interaction with the databse.
Although, i'll be using all the new feature like components etc. and might later on shift to remoting components to query data.

Can anyone suggest me which approach should be better??

Flash Generator
I generated a Flash Intro from a web site and I copied the text they generated for me, and implemented it into the two designated files. One script was supposed to go into my index.html. The other was supposed to go into a content.php file. I copied both of the codes into the appropriate files, and when I launched the specified page for a test, it dosn't seem to be working. (i.e. - it takes forever to load, and eventully errors).

Using PDF Generator With Flash
I've been asked to create an interactive CD that allows you to build your own print ad. No problem ... until I got to their "export it as a PDF" request.

They wanted to know if I could somehow allow the user to export the ad they just created as a PDF file they can then hand over to their local Kinko's.

I've searched FlashKit and a few other sites, and have somehow missed where this might be discussed.

Could you point me in the right direction?

Flash, Generator Or BOTH?
I am doing some research for my employer. What our company does is create multimedia advertisements, just like a commercials per say, to be displayed on different size LCD monitors and or Plasmas in different location. For example, if you go into the local diner there is 8 LCD Monitors - say 20 or 30 inches and 1 plasma as well. Our clients purchase 30 sec. space to have a multimedia ad to run for so long (whatever they pay for). The intent is also to have the ability to use the content created/ad in muliple formats such as being able to use for the web on a clients website possibly, get it onto CD/DVD or put onto CD/DVD for our Clients customer. Like a little media presentation as well. Need these ads to scale well too. Using bitmaps, vectors on different size and sometimes very large plasmas.

We were using powerpoint for a while which worked but a constraining in creating great animations. And not friendy if we wanted to use this content for the web or clients web site - if that makes any sense at all.

My million dollar question is which (if any) program would be best for us to do the things mentioned above. Or both?? Any info would be so valuable and greatly appreciated. Also if anyone know where I can get some more info. I would appreciate that too.

I'm looking for a pdf generator to output from flash. From what I can tell flash2pdf was the leading tool to do this, but I can't find anything good as of now. Any suggests? We're really not in a position to do too much of an actual code development due to collaboration on the project with another firm. We're restricted to the flash.

Generator And Flash
I have a problem. Flash isn't the greatest when it comes to updating portions of a site, etc...you gotta make graphics, make sure theyre the right sizes, proportions, set everything up, and it gets annoying.

SO...I'd like to learn generator so I can update portions of a site on the fly and get rid of these long hours of work. It'd be impressive to update the things they want me to update so quickly...cause it gets annoying when your boss says you have to update 1/2 the site tomarrow, then complains because "its not done yet?"...none of these people understand how slow flash is to develop, etc.

GETTING TO MY POINT...where are there any Flash + Generator tutorials that I can learn from to be able to set up template pages, etc?

WHAT SHOULD I USE? GENERATOR OR FLASH TURBINE? PLEASE...
I need to create a flash interface that can stream mp3 files on the fly. In other words, the databaseof MP3s will be changing often as I add and take a away, but I don't want to be going into Flash everytime to make sure the buttons will open the new MP3 in the database.

Should i be using Turbine (maybe Direct Turbine) for this? Some advice from any FLashers experienced in this kind of dynamic MP3 work would be much appreciated. Thanks

Flash Crossword Generator
Hi there,

building a crossword-puzzle in Flash is no problem...but does anyone know if it was tried before to generate those crossword puzzles dynamically with Actionsript ?

What I have in mind:
- read clues and answers from a xml file
- generate the puzzle from the derived data

This way you could use a database with lots of clues and answers to randomly create a new crossword puzzle.

Any idea how something like that could be implemented with actionscript ?

Quote Generator Using Flash 8
I am trying to build a Quote generator. The idea is that when consumers change their selection (from a check box or a Combo Box) the text in a Text field or Dynamic text box would change to reflect the updated price of the Job.

I.E. SHIRTS Long sleeve=$10 Short Sleeve=$5 PANTS Jeans=$7 Shorts=$3 If Shirts is set as Long sleeve and Pants are set as Jeans the Result box shows $17. If the Consumer selects Shorts instead of Jeans it automatically show $13 in the Result box.

I am able to do addition with component values through action script and have them reflected in a Dynamic Text box, However when the selection in a combo box changes (thus their value should change) the content of the Dynamic Text box does not update. It always shows the initial sum of the values of the added component boxes.

I have also come at this through component binding and schema. I can get the values of Combo boxes to be reflected in Text fields, and when the selection of the combo box changes the value shown in the Text field updates automatically. However I have not found a way to get the text field to show the SUM of two different component boxes. When I link two component boxes to the same text field the value shown in that text field is the value of whatever the most recently used combo box value is. (It over writes rather than adding).

If any one could help me get this Quote engine working, through action script, or Bindings or Schemas, or a combination of both I would really appreciate it. If anyone could direct me to where I could find information on what I am trying to do I would really appreciate it.

Xml Generator For Flash Mp3 Player

Flash 6 Generator Equivalent To Export Dynamically Populated Images From Flash
I'm trying to do an automatic export of graphics developed in flash, for static site elements- graphic buttons.
Generator used to export images from dynamically populated templates, but MX does not support generator, Also being that generator ran with 4 and 5, dynamic text field sizing was not an option-this is necessary to fit the button graphics to text.

Is there either something that I can generate buttons with flash, or has anyone seen a button generator that can batch export and use imported graphics?

Generator 2 / Flash 5 ActionScript Bugs
Hi,

I'm currently working on a project that uses Generator 2 (Authoring extensions release 3 installed) and Flash 5 to localize Flash sites.

After generating the sites, navigation got stuck at this point: on abtn-click a function call accesses an Array that tells all movieclips in the array to go to a specific frame.
Nothing happens though.
When running the site in Flash test mode (with Generator enabled) everything works fine.

I've also noticed a problem concerning the Flash 5 'attachMovie' command when Generator is enabled in Flash testmodemode. This only seems to work when Generator is disabled.

Question is: can anyone pinpoint this problem? And if not, has anybody got a
Flash5 / Generator 2 bug list (or other resources specialized in this
topic), or workarounds for known problems in this field?

We've installed Generator release 3 as authoring extension as well as installed release 3 on the server (developer edition). Still, each specific Flash 5 command seems to be ignored.

Sending Flash Variables To Generator
In flash 5 have a button on a current generator movie to open a new generator movie in level 1....the script is:

queryString = "?newgvar=" & fvar;
loadMovie ("zzz.swf" & queryString, 1);

where fvar is set to an existing generator variable and the 'newgvar" will be used in a new generator template in the insert jpeg file name attribute as {newgvar}....

why the hell aint this working?

Flash Button Generator Templates
Hi,

I am trying to create a flash button which I can use in dreamweaver. I have followed the instructions on the macromedia website but with some problems.

I have created a button in flash 5, saved it as a generator template and then copied it into the relevant directory in dreamweaver. I have then inserted this flash button in dreamweaver MX and can see my button, In the properties box for the button I can then set the link for the button, however the link doesn't work. There is no problem woth the link as I can use it for an existing template.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Do I need to add something more to the flash file before saving it or do I need some further software?

Hello all. I am a mathematician and i am curious about how sophisticated flash's default random number generator is; does anyone know or can anyone link me to the information?

Flash Drum Beat Generator
does anyone know a tutorial out there on creating a simple drum beat generator in flash? or, have any suggestions in how to make one. basically, what im thinking is:

eight buttons in an 8 frame movie clip
the buttons are able to be turned "on" and "off"
each of the eight frames checks one of the buttons asking "if button is on, play sound"
and it loops and thats it. i dont know how to pull this off, if anyone can whip up an example thatd be cool.

I'm a casual Flasher using Flash 5 (yes, I know this is the MX forum - hold on). There are pages on a site I've developed for a fantasy football league that I'd like to be able to update in real time using Generator templates and simple text files. These are very simple scoreboard and statistics pages, certainly not huge or complex. Went searching around for a Generator host and learned (if I understood it correctly) that MM is phasing out Generator altogether. Hmmm...

So my question is: Does Flash MX allow creation of this sort of thing, real-time updating? Is it the same process as in Flash 5 or is it easier in MX? I didn't see anything on the official MM site that answered the question. I've had good luck here at Kirupa's in the past and thought I'd come back for some insight from folks in the know.

Query On Flash Image Generator
Hey all this is my first (hopefullly of many) post on these boards. I've been making use of the articles on the sitepoint site for a short while now and thought that i would venture into the forum for some chat.

My question is in relation to Flash. I have taken over from a former collague that developed and put together the core infrastructure of the websites that our customers have. One item that he seems to have decided to include on the majority of homepages is a simple flash banner that transtitions between 2 or more web images.

Part of what i am trying to do is to pass back onto the customer more control over their website. So my question is, is there any software out there (either open source or a paid product) that can be used to generate a flash item from images provided by the customer?

I can of course produce these myself in Flash and this amounts for 100% of what i can actually do in Flash, but would like to free the customer to maintain this section of their website themselves.

2. Can I use that to create my own buttons in Flash and use the generator to make the .swf files into .swt's so that I then can customize the button in Dreamweaver CS3?

Flash 5 Using Generator Moving To Flash Remoting
I have been working with a Flash 5 site created with Flash MX 2004 version7. We had installed the features in this web site during the period of 1999 to 2001. We purchased Generator version 2.0 and every thing worked great. Now we have had to upgrade our servers using 2003 operating system. We also created a children's browser that is based on IE 4 and Flash 8 will not run on our servers. Two of the features used a SQL database to get varable information to display. With the new servers and new software we cannot get these two features to work.

I am trying to use Flash Remoting and rasing the version of the Flash programs to either 6 or 7. I am not sure how to get rid of the swt's and make everything run under the swf''s. Can anyone help to move this project forward....Larry

Flash MX Dynamic Content... Generator, ASPTurbine, Remoting Components
I have been working with dynamic content in Flash 5 for some time now. The server side Flash generation tool I had been using was and is Blue-Pac's ASPTurbine over Macromedias Generator due to price and ease of use.

With Macromedias new release of Flash MX and its omission of SWT (Generator Templates) there seemed to be no tool directly equivalent to that of ASPTurbine or Generator for the creation of dynamic content in flash. However Macromedia released a beta tool used in conjuction with Flash MX called Salsa which now seems to be called Flash Remoting Components. Although this new tool does not seem to generate dynamic SWF it does connect Flash with dynamic content using Microsofts new .NET infrastructure and others such as Java and ColdFusion.

So now here is my question:

What tool replaces ASPTurbine and Generator in Flash MX?

Every time I launch Flash 5, I get an alert box containing the E/M "Cannot locate Flash Generator installation path." When I click it away, the program launches with no apparent problem. I'd like to do the humanitarian thing and help my program find its lost path; but, failing that, need I worry about anything? :>/

Flash Generator And "attachMovie"
Hi,

I'm building a Flash template for use with Generator. The actionscript code contains a "attachMovie" command.

When testing locally with Generator enabled in the Flash publish settings, the command fails (nothing is attached).
This also seems the case when actually publishing the movie with Generator.

When you test locally with Generator disabled, everything works fine.

Is anyone familiar with this problem?

Is There Anyway To Do This Without Generator?
is there any way to load an image into flash at runtime? what i mean is i have an swf and a jpg... the swf has some kind of actionscript that says "load the jpg" and puts it in there.

or there can be a movieclip that would switch out with an image that it reads from the hard drive or something.

i wish flash could do this, or that there is some way to hack around it, so i don't have to use generator just for this one feature.

how would i use generator to make random pictures appear in my page. here are my thoughts:

so i "insert JPG file" from generator objects...
in one keyframe i have a randomizer for the number of pics that i have,
then i convert the random number (test) into a string (test=test.toString

i then add a jpg extension: (test=test+".jpeg")

i think that this is how i should go about this part but i am not sure. so moving on...
what data source do i use for the generator object?
