How To Format External Text File To Show In Three Separate Columns Through Text Area?
Hullo everyone!

Could anyone suggest a piece of advice to visualize the following idea?

I should like to import an external .txt file into flash and display it by means of a text area component, which would take the better part of the screen and be skinned to fit the rest of the page design. The text ought to be formatted by way of an external .css file. Images are optional.

I can do all this allright, but what I should like to have is the text formatted to be displayed in three separate columns. The idea for this naturally comes from the Flash version of the Macromedia Edge newsletter.

I should be most thankful if anyone cared to come up with a solution.

Controling Text Boxes Display Area Via Code
Hi , i want to be able to change a dynamic text box's display area (which means not just scalling the whole thing but just increasing the size of the area showing the text) using a script.. though i'm not sure how to "talk" to my text box.

what functions are there in actionscript (i use flash 8) to do the following:

1)count the number of characters a TXT file has in var1
2)increasing either the X or Y or the boxes display area
3)checking the border of a text box (so i can check when the border is off the stage's limits and then restor it)

actually what i've been trying to make is a moving heading box ,a text loaded from a TXT and then resize the boxes size to fit all text into one line and then move it from the right to left until it reaches the end of the text and then loop the whole process.

i've managed to make the box movie and load the text but i cant control the box's properties using a code.

Vertical Align Text In Dynamic Text Area
Have just created my first database driven dynamic text box and it works

Just one problem...

One of the dynamic text areas is multi-line and try as I might I can't seem to find any way to set the vertical alignment of the text to 'middle' vertically...

i.e. if the text is only a couple of words, it aligns to the top of the textarea and I'd like it to align to the middle of the text area vertically.

Any ideas???

Flash 5: Trying To Get Mc To Appear When A Separate Object Is In Certain Area
I have a several images that move across the screen depending on where the mouse is, when the each image is in a certain area of the screen, i want another image to show up for as long as that image is there. I am having trouble figuring out how to to this. basically i know that i need to figure out how to say: if position of mc "one" is "blank" then show or play mc"two"

If I give you this text scroller download can you make it scroll smoother? Thats the challenge I havent seen one roll smoothe yet. Can you apply some code to make it scrol in small pixel amounts and speed as well? So that it rolls up or down the screen the same as movie words scrol on the TV screen?

I place the scroller inside an mc and place on stage it works.Only because of the structure of my site.This mc should be placed inside another mc.This mc is loaded by a button from the root with an attachmovie function.Now the scroller and txt file is loaded but the buttons don't scrol the text anymore

MX: Textfield In Scrol Pane
Hi, I have a text field in a scrol pane.

It is a xml news list.

The problem I am having is that I want the pane to fill up as the news comes in.

At the moment I have so set the text field to be a certain size and it gets populated.

What I want to do is have the text field push down, depending on the amount of content - making the scrol bar appear if the text goes down longer than the size of the scrol pane.

Hi there,

I wanne make a scroller that loads in external txt file so its easy to update.Problem is the way my site is setup it doesn't seem to load the txt.

My scroller is placed inside an mc.This mc is placed inside another mc.The mc is loaded by a holder(attachmovie function).
The only way I can see it working is when the scroller(mc) is placed on the main timeline.How can I make the scroller work
inside an mc placed inside another mc wish is loaded by a holder.

I seem to have a probl with my scroller.The txt file get's loaded only the scrollbuttons don't seem to work.

Can someone have a look at this file.(see below)

Quick question before continuing on a very large project.

Can I combine separate flash projects or coded swf's into one large Flash final project without making a mess to conserve on space and memory? I would like to leave all my library elements behind as it's taking up too much space.

At the moment, my project is too large to work on - I have too many items in the library, so I'm in the pocess of separating it into individual projects respectively.

What's a good way of attacking this problem? At the moment - I have in 6 different "scenes" using the Flash default (new scene) with approximately 12-17 layers in each scenewhich totals 65 separate screens the player can choose that are linked with gotoAndPlay frame # action. I want to get rid of tweened animations and use script instead in my movies but I'm having difficulty since all is not the root level.

What do you think - your seasoned techno opinion is desparately needed.

Dynamic Text & Separate SWFs
So I have a movie that calls dynamic text from a .txt file. It scrolls, etc...All works fine.

In the first frame of the movie, I call the text like so:
loadVariablesNum("slide2.txt",0);

but this movie is being called by a "Main" movie. So when I preview the main movie & then click the button to open the sub movie that contains the text, etc, everything shows up, but the text does not.

any ideas?

I did a tutorial on this, but it used CSS and was so much more complicated than I need it to be. I juse want to format the .txt document with html.

Splitting Text Into Separate Arrays?
hey, i am trying to split some data from a database that is being pulled by php into separate arrays. I can bring all the information into a single array and trace its position in that array but i need to have the information split depending on the the php output.

for example:

i need the gallerytitle to be one array and the galleryimages to be another array

2 Problems: 1. EmbedFonts Makes Text Disappear, 2. Dynamic Text Vertical Position

The problem:
If I uncomment either of the imageText.embedFonts lines, my text will disappear... but the trace(imageText.text); will still return the correct contents. It's as though embedFonts causes the textField to disappear.

Possibly related, (but maybe not), is the fact that the vertical positioning of the font is off. Even though I create the textField at Y = 0, the text writes somewhere around Y = 10. I suspect this is something else, but I thought I'd add it just in case.

Any help with either (or both) problems would be fabulous. Thanks,

An Algorhythm To Kern Separate Text Boxes?
i need help with a kerning problem. i have a dynamic text box set up inside a movie clip that is being duplicated by actionscript. each instance of the dyn text box contains only one letter that is inputted from a variable. each letter loaded is then lined up after the one before it to form words (it is sort of like a type-writer effect). because the letters exist in different text boxes, flash can't kern them automatically. what i need is an algorhythm (or code would be even better) that will correctly kern the separate letters by padding each letter based on its value so that they form normal looking words. does anyone have any ideas? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanx!

Populating Two Separate Text Fields With One Button Action?
Hi,

I am a super newbie to using dynamic content and I have a problem. Ultimately, what I want to happen is have a row of buttons on the left of my site which act as the content navigation option. This content is generally dynamic text, parsed through ColdFusion.

The way I envision it working is this:

1. When a button is pressed, data corresponding to a URL encoded query string is pulled from the database and stored in an invisible movie clip offstage. This data corresponds to some "teaser" content, slated to appear in the "system_teaser" text box, and some "main" content, slated to appear in the "system_main" text box.

2. As a result of the same button event on(release) I want to send those values to the appropriate text boxes.

In my more complicated movie, I am having all sorts of trouble getting Flash to acknowledge my invisible clip, called "control", so I created a simplified test movie with only three elements.

1. A movie clip, which has the code onClipEvent (data) {
trace ("got the data");
} on it.

2. A button, which has the code: on(release) {
loadVariables("http://qa.somesite.com/vars.cfm?page=somepage",_root.one);
}
on it. Both "somesite" and "somepage" have genuine values and are only placeholders here.

3. A dynamic text field, set to multiline.

I know the data is loading into the clip, because I get the trace message, but I am uncertain how to proceed in order to get the data to then appear in the text box.

I am trying to put a symbol at the end of a line in an input box and prevent the enter key from inserting a newline before this happens. so I would have a line of text that looks like this

instead of this:

When I run the movie in test mode (cntrl + enter) it works, but when I use it in a browser or projector it produces the undesired result.

Also is there any way to force a input box to be in insert mode instead of just regular typing mode?

Vertical Text In Dynamic Text Of A Symbol
I have created a basic symbol with dynamic text, so that I may have many of the same symbol and script the text that shows up on the symbol. When I have the text box in a horizontal orientation the text shows up in my animation but when I turn it into a vertical orientation my text does not show up. Unfortunately I need the symbols to have vertical text. Does anyone have any advice???

There are very many examples of text boxes with vertical ScrollBars, but however they are READ only: NO text input is permitted!!

Know anyone an example, how to calculate the size and position of the vertical Scrollbar in a “user input multiline” text box???

Vertical Scrolling Text
I'm an absolute beginner at actionscript (the most I've been able to do is a "go to and play (frame)" action but my company's got a client who is requesting a "stock ticker" like effect. Bascially, what he wants is line containing 10 different words seperated by spaces which will scroll left to right then loop seemlessly. I know it can be done via actionscript but I'm under a very tight deadline and am wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction rather than trying days of trial and error.

The total effect will also enable the user to mouse-over one of the words which would temporarily halt the scrolling effect. If the user then clicks on the world, they'd be taken to that particular web page.

Sorry if this is a "ho, hum - what a knucklehead" kind of request, but if it werent for the deadline I'm facing I wouldn't bother anyone with this apparently simplistic issue.

PS: I've looked at the "Scrollee" tutorial on FlashKit which provides almost what I want, but the text doesn't start it's scroll from the left.

Text Kern - Vertical
I've looked and looked and can't find the control for vertical kerning. In case I am using the wrong terminology, here's what I am referring to:

Text2

I want to modify the space between Text1 and Text2, to bring them closer together or farther apart. Horizontal kerning is right on the properties bar, why isn't vertical??

Hi.
I am looking for a good tutorial on how to create a vertical scrolling text box.

What I mean by that is:

On the side of my page there will be some text that without the use of buttons or mouseovers, will scroll slowly vertically, displaying different text.

One section would scroll up, then when it gets to the middle stop moving for about 30 seconds (to allow people to read and click on it) than the text scrolls up to be replaced by another set of text.

I am assuming that this would be done in flash. I currently have Flash MX.

Any thoughts?

I am working on a flash project in which i have one input text box.
I want to show text entered in input box in Vertical format.

I have applied the logic converting the text in vertical format.
it works fine in English version of Windows OS. But it does not seem to work in
Japanese OS. I dont know what the problem is.
It might be character set or fonts embedded...

So if anyone has any idea about this problem then please help ....

I need to be able to put a dynamic text label on a vertical button (so that it reads like the spine of a book).
I've created a "label" component and have got it reading the text in correctly, but when I rotate the component to go vertically, the text disappears.
Can someone tell me why and whether or not there is another way to create this text label and feed it dynamically?

I'm trying to create a menu whose buttons are dynamically created, which sounds pretty simple, right???

...problem is that the text should be rotated 90 degrees, which seems to cause flash to ignore any text I try to send. If I remove the rotation everything is fine. Is there anyway of doing this?

I need to make a text autoscroll in Flash, to display a list of customers, it's similar what you find in:

http://www.edifica-universal.com.mx/ing/customers.htm, that is a java applet, but I need the very same effect, made with Flash.

I have no idea how to do it, what I especifically need is a 600 pixels width x 230 pixels height text vertical autoscroller movie, plain and simple, with no other effect in it, with white background and black text, Arial or Tahoma fonts, 10 pts in size.

Any ideas on how to do it, or where should I start?

I have a dynamic text field that is rotated 90 degrees cw. When I preview the swf, the text will not render. I've tried numerous fonts to see if that would affect it.

When I change the text field to static, the text will render. If I keep it dynamic but have the text stay horizontal, the text renders. I've tried putting the text field in an mc and rotate the mc but still no love.

Anyone else run into this?
