Cannot Install SQL Server Management Studio After Removing Express Edition
I'm trying to upgrade my management studio to the full version, I uninstalled Express edition and started the install for the full version, but I get an error stating "you cannot install this component because it is already installed". I had a word with one of the guys in the office and he said the only way he's ever been able to get round this is by flattening the entire PC and starting again. Obviously I want to avoid that!

I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Prof Edition on a Vista machine and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on a Windows 2000 server. They will be used as a development environment for us. As we need to management the SQL Server 2005, we would like to install the 2005 Developer SSMS on the Vista machine such that we can manage the SQL Server 2005 developer instance installed on that Win2k machine. However, the system does not allow us to do it. We have the express edition autoamtically installed while we installed the Vistual Studio. Is there any workaround that i can still install the 2005 developer SSMS without uninstall the sql server 2005 Xpress version? Or, I have to uninstall the Xpress version before i can install the 2005 developer's SSMS? Please help!

Please, I use tyhe Visual Studion 2005 SQL Server Express Edition Management Studio (SMSE) to create the backend database and trying to set the connectionstring from the web config file, but what I continue to get as an error is that "<computername>/ASPNET" login failed for that user, cannot login to the Management Studio. How To Install Management Studio Express 2005 After VS2008 On Server 2008?
Ok so here's what happened: Installed Server 2008 (64bit) Installed VS2008 (+SQL 2005 Express, by default) I've always installed SQL 2005 Dev (including the SQL Management Studio) before installing VS. Now I am trying to install just the management studio on this machine without success. I tried installing the SQL workstation tools package from the SQL 2005 DVD but the installer detects the tools installed by SQL express (osql, etc.., but no management studio GUI) and the installer refuses to install anything else. I also tried downloading the separate installer for SQL management studio but it doesn't like something also: first thing the installer does is display this mesage: "Installation of this product failed because it is not supported on this operating system For more information on supported configurations, see the product documentation." Any way to do this without having to reinstall VS? Thanks.

How Can I Access SQL Server Compact Edition With SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Hello, I just installed SQL Server Compact Edition, since I am considering using it instead of SQL Server Express for a local database in my application. The documentation mentioned that I could use SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect to the Compact Edition and create and manipulate databases. To try to connect, I run Management Studio and bring up the "Connect to Server" dialog. Unfortunately, the pull-down list of "Server name"s does not include the SQL Server Compact Edition server. I do not know how to type in the server name manually, so I cannot connect. To install Compact Edition, I downloaded it and ran "SQLServerCE31-EN.msi". This installed, and I assume registered, a number of DLLs in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server Compact Editionv3.1". Is there perhaps an additional step that I left out to complete the installation? Might I need an upgrade to some other components? Using SQL Server Management Studio Tools To Manage Dbs On SQL Server Express Edition
Hopefully a simple question: Is it possible to use Maintenance Plans created on SQL Server Management Studio (installed as part of an instance of SQL Server 2005 Standard Ed.) to back up databases running on an instance of SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services? I don't need directions, just whether or not it is permitted. I've been able to create the plans including establishing connections to from SSMS to the the SQL Express instance, but they keep erroring out. I just need to know if this is actually permitted since Maintenance Plans are not available on Management Studio Express Edition. Thank you in advance for your help.

When I try to open a CE database from SSMSEE, I get the dreaded "You are trying to access an older version of a SQL Server Compact Edition database" error, with "Db version = 3505053, Requested version = 3004180." I am using what I believe to be the latest version of SSCE (3.5) and the latest version of SSMSEE (2005 SP2, Help|About reports the version as 9.00.3042.00). The database is created without error, compacted, repaired, and so forth, with no change to the error. Do I need to install or reinstall something, and if so what? Thanks.

Hi all, In my VB 2005 Express, I created a Windowds Form application "shcDataSet" that used 1 SqlConnection, 1 SqlDataSet and 3 SqlDataAdapters associated with the Northwind Database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express. The SqlConnection had "User Instance" in the following ConnectionString: Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataorthwnd.mdf";Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True. The 3 SqlDataAdapters were for the Northwind files "Customers", "Orders" and "Order Details" used in the SQLDataSet "AllOrders" with a AllOrders.xsd file. I ran the "shcDataSet" applicatyion and it worked fine. After the execution of "shcDataSet", I checked the Northwind database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express and clicked on "+" in front of Northwind database-I did not see any file showed up and I got the following error message: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.SmoEnum) Additional information: one or more files do not match the primary file of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupted and should be restored from a backup. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:5173). If I executed the "shcDataSet" application again, I got a new error: SqlException was unhandled - Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'myPC##myName' ------->daCustomers.Fill(AllOrders11, "Customers"). I have 3 questions to ask: (1) How can I re-install the Northwind database in SQL Server Management Studio Express? Server Express, Management Studio Express, Visual Studio Standard, And An ASP.NET Page....
I believe I'm missing something as far as my configuration goes...I'm new to working with SQL server and the databinding I'm trying to do. I have an ASP.NET page that has a radio button list box which I have databound to a database served up by SQL Express I'm having a lot of problems with connections... I was going to enumerate the behavior under each configuration (local only, remote tcp/ip only, remote pipes only, remote both), but I've realized that it is just flaky. Sometimes I can connect to the db with SQL Studio express, sometimes not. Sometimes I can add new tables and edit tables, sometimes not. Sometimes I can create a new connection when trying to databind from within Visual Studio, and sometimes not (sometimes I can't even connect, other times, I can connect initially but when I build a query through the designer it then has problems). Lastly, sometimes the ASP.NET page works correctly and sometimes not. This all seems to be mostly independent of how I configure SQL Server as far as what kinds of connections are allowed. I thought there was a pattern, but as I tested it more rigorously I found there wasn't. What I would like to do is be connected to the same DB with Visual Studio and SQL Studio, edit the DB as I wish, databind to it, and test my ASP.NET page, all without needing to jump through a bunch of hoops (although right now I wouldn't even know what those hoops are...it's just a shot in the dark as to what will work). It's all quite maddening and any help would be appreciated.

Visual Studio Database File And SQL Server Management Studio Express Question
I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason

I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

I tried several times to install SQL Server 2005 but always bumped into the same issue, there is an error and I can't see the SQL Server Management Studio. The message says "Product : Workstation Components, Books Online and Development Tools Error : A component that you have specified in the ADD_LOCAL property is already installed. To upgrade the existing component, refer to the template.ini and set the UPGRADE property to the name of the component." Updating To SQL Server Management Studio Developer Edition Is Not Working
I got VS Pro which came with SQL Server Management Studio Developer Edition. Very exciting! However, when I go to update from SQL Server Management Studio Express to Dev Edition it says that there are tools / components already installed. I completely uninstalled everything having to do with SQL Server from my machine and tried again. It still says that the tools / components are installed. I see that there are still several instances of SQL Server still on my machine. So I tried reinstalling Express again. However, now the Configuration Manager has a snap-in that won't start. I tried to install SQL Server 2005 in a fresh installed Windows 2003 SP2. And this server is a workgroup member, not a member of a domain. The services (Database service, integration service, reporting services and so on) work fines, but the other components, such as SQL XML 6.0 , SQL Server management Studio cannot be installed. SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???
When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data. Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing). When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server. Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine? Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic? The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Hi, I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum. Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it. I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list. I've seen the following error posted when people try to connect to their server via their applications but didn't see anyone having problems when trying to connect with SQL Server Management Studio Express. Why Can't I See My Web Developer Express Database From SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Hi, I'm completely new to SQL Server and ASP.NET, so please bear with me on my learning curve! I've installed Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express (on the same PC). I then used Web Developer Express to successfully create a new database with a couple of tables in it. So far so good. I then installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the same PC and tried to connect to my new database. The connection to the SQL Server instance appears to work OK (using Windows Authentication) but I can't see the database I previously created. All I can see are the System Databases. Does anyone know what the solution might be?

Connecting VB Express Files To SQL Server Management Studio Express
Really confused ... I created 2 tables in a VB Express program (which went well). Problem is that I can't see/find those tables with MSME. I don't really understand how to connect the MSME to where the tables are. I created the tables under My DocumentsData and they are DBapp.mdf + DBapp_log.LDF and the tables are Items and Preferences. The VB application can "see" the tables OK. Do I need to move the tables to C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSQL.1MSQLDATA (like the Adventureworks installation which I haven't done) or what? SQL Server 2005 64bit Install - Missing Management Studio
Good Afternoon, I just installed SQL Server 2005 64bit on a fresh system with no other applications loaded on running on the new server. The only other component that was installed with the SS2K5 database services is SSIS. The base installation and the SP2 patch went on perfect. I went looking for the Management Studio thru the Start menu options and it is NOT under the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 group. The only options under the SS2K5 group are "Configuration Tools" and "Docs and Tutorials". Here are file names that I downloaded from the MS website and installed. Hi all, In the last one and half years, I used the Northwind Database in SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to learn the programming of SqlConnections, Data sources, Database Exploere, ADO.NET 2.0, etc. via VB 2005 Express. The Northwind Database in my SSMSE got lost very often, but I was not aware of it. How can I know where the Northwind Database is used or processed by my VB 2005 Express projects that were the examples of some tutorial books or my trial projects? SQL Server Management Studio don't see local SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition x64 on Vista Ultimate x64 Hi, I have strange problem with SQL Server Management Studio on Vista Ultimate x64. Nothing change after installing all newest service packs or hot fixes. I have two running SQL servers on my local machine and all surrounding SQL services running as well. I have turn on TCP/IP and Named pipes on both of this servers. Actually I have reinstalled second server after first one wasn't contactable in any way... After finished installation of second one and after applying service packs I turn on SQL Server Management Studio and still nothing in local servers pane when Browsing for servers to connect but in network servers after few seconds I see one of my local servers (first one installed) and one SQL Server 2000 on other machine (on this one I can't connect because of time out error). Also when browsing for servers in Local Servers I see my machine in Integration Services. Only difference between this running services is that Integration service log on as Network Service and all other SQL services log on as Local System account and on SQL Server that is invisible I have also SQL Server Reporting Services running. Can't Install 2005 SQL Server Management Studio, It Doesnt Show Up. What A Joke!
Hello I have wasted several hours on this simple problem and I'm ready to give up. I simply want SQL Server Management Studio on my laptop so I can connect to our 2005 servers and manage them. I have several different versions of 2005 from our MSDN subscription including but not limited to: SQL 2005 Enterprise Edition (MSDN Library DVD) SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition SQL 2005 Standard Edition Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server (SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition) Everytime I tried to install it, the Server Management Studio simply would not install. I looked for the exe files and didn't find them. I verified the path several times and they simply didn't install. I googled and found a few solutoins but none helped. For example on: http://aspadvice.com/blogs/name/archive/2007/09/24/Installing-SQL-Server-Management-Studio-with-SQL-Server.aspx They stated to go to the 'Tools' folder on the CD and run it from there, I do not have these folders on my SQL 2005 CD/DVDs. I tried to reinstall it a few times with selection only the management tools for the client, but it thinks I have SQL 2005 installed!!! I uninstalled it from add/remove, and it didn't work. I deleted the folders and it didn't work. I ran msicuu2.exe and that still isn't working. Are there ANY suggestions on how to get this freaking Server Management Studio installed? Product Version: 3.5.5608.0I tried to uninstalled these 2 and re-install the SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 Files, but it didn't help.Currently I'm uninstalling SQL Server 2008 because the command prompt installation instruction page could not be found in the books online, so i'm trying my luck to uninstall SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 and reinstall the whole SQL Server 2008. The main reason why I was trying to install SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition is only to manage SQL Server Compact 3.5 database file. Since i upgraded the database into 3.5, i was not able to open it anymore using SQL Express 2005 Query Designer in the VS 2008 is just like the sql view query designer which is not as good as sql management studio. Hi all, I have read/studied (i) Working with Databases in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express in http://quickstarts.asp.net/QuickStartv20/aspnet/doc/data/vwd.aspx, (ii) Xcopy Deployment (SQL Server Express) in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165716.aspx, (iii) User Instances for Non-Administrators in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143684.aspx, and (iv) Embedding SQL Server Server Express in Applications in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165660.aspx. I do not understand the concepts and procedures to do Xcopy and User Instances for non-administrators completely-I do not know how to connect to databases and create database diagrams or schemas using the Database Explorer. I have a stand-alone Windows XP Pro PC. I have created a ChemDatabase with 3 dbo tables in the SQL Server Management Studio of my SQL Server Express and a website of my VWD Express application with an App_Data folder. I am not able to proceed to use Xcopy and user instance to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase to my App_Data folder. I took webhosting from datapacket.net, and using helm control panel. to deploy database, i used sql management studio express as suggested by some one. Now i am not able to access any of database or tables, although i got connected when i altered configuration surface setting to allow server to go to remote server.
