Cannot Connect Remotely To SQLExpress Via SQL Server Management Studio Express
Hi all,
I'm having a little trouble connecting to a SQLExpress instance on a remote domain using SQL Server Management Studio Express.
I've read that by default the program is set up locally only, so have edited the Surface Area Configuration. It only gives me the option to edit 'Services and Connections' on the localhost, but have edited the Remote Connections to use TCP/IP and Named Pipes.
In the Management Studio, I enter the server name, and login credentials. On the Connection Properties tab I changed the network protocol to TCP/IP though everytime I attempt to connect I get the following error message:

I've seen the following error posted when people try to connect to their server via their applications but didn't see anyone having problems when trying to connect with SQL Server Management Studio Express. Am I missing something here? This is the error:<<An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. Cannot Connect To SQL Server 2005 Express With Management Studio Express
On my home machine without permanent network connections enabled, I cannot get the Management Studio connect to the database server. Always get this error: Cannot connect ot MPLIAMSQLEXPRESS Additional Information: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, erro: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server) I have used the SQL Surface Area Configuration Tool to reset the defaults to allow remote connections, stopped and restarted the server, but still get the same message. Please help.

SQL Database User Account Access Remotely Via SQL Management Studio Express
Hi, I hope you can help.I have configured a Windows 2003 web server and SQL 2005 Server (on same box) to successfully allow remote connections and to allow access via SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005.The problem I have is that I want to restrict access to the databases on the server via the Management Studio to specific databases e.g. 1 database user "sees" only 1 database.I can configure it so that the user's remote access permissions do not allow access to other databases but they can still "see" the database listed in the Management Studio explorer.I can also configure it so that the users cannot see all the databases (by disabling View All Databases on SQL Server), but this means that they cannot not see their own database which they have permissions for.Is it impossible to have the desired behaviour of only displaying the database which the remote user accessing has permissions for and hiding all other databases?I have MSN'd,Googled and Yahoo'd this one to no avail :(Many thanksFergus

Cannot Connect To SQL Server Express Edition Using Its Management Studio
Please, I use tyhe Visual Studion 2005 SQL Server Express Edition Management Studio (SMSE) to create the backend database and trying to set the connectionstring from the web config file, but what I continue to get as an error is that "<computername>/ASPNET" login failed for that user, cannot login to the Management Studio. This is my expression from the web config file <connectionStrings><clear /><add name="LocalSqlServer" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS; Database=<dbname>;User Instance=true; Integrated Security=true" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings> Is there anything I do wrong? Cannot Connect To Report Server From Management Studio Express
hello there, I appreciate any help on the following issue: When I want to connect to a local report server on as shown in the "Reporting Services Tools" tutorial (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-au/library/aa337424.aspx), the SSMSE does not show the option "Reporting Services" in the "Server type" drop down list in the "Connect to server" dialog. The tutorial says "In the Server type list, select Reporting Services. If Reporting Services is not on the list, it is not installed." This must be wrong as the SSCM clearly shows an installed and running "SQL Server Reporting Service (...)". Also if i call the webinterface (http://localhost/reports/) a page loads that says "SQL Server Reporting Services Home" with some options. And here something is not correct too. The "contents" tab of the report manager says "There are no items in Home." I started to work on some basic tutorials using the sql server business development studio, and everything works fine. I can create reports, which derive data from the AdventureWorks db properly. Can anyone tell me the adequate steps to fix the SSMSE connection problem and the webinterface view problem? Here are some additional informations: I use WinXP SP2, which makes the IIS version 5.1 SQL server is 2005 express with advanced features and i installed the management toolkit, and the AdventureWorks db. Installation history is as follows: .NET framework 2.0 + VS2005 professional edition was installed 1. installed ss2005express+advanced features, on a named instance. worked fine. I did not install the SSMSE at this point, as i knew it is included in the toolkit too. 2. configured the reporting services through the "reporting services configuration" tool. worked fine. 3. installed the management tool kit. worked fine. 4. installed the AdventureWorks db. installed, but was not attached automaticaly to the database engine. 5. attached the AdventureWorks db to the database engine manually. worked fine, can be viewed and accessed properly. So there I am. I have no clue what went wrong. A last hint that makes me think is this: In the SSCM the sql server an the sql server reporting services have different instance ids (MSSQL.1 and MSSQL.2 respectively). I am unable to connect to my database on a VPS server using server management studio express. I am able to ping the server. can connect to a local database but i have the same issue as others Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server have set the server so that it will allow remote connections and reset the server just to make sure that it has been implemented. when i use osql in command prompt to make a test connection it tells me this [SQL Native Client]Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [SQL Native Client]Login timeout expired [SQL Native Client]An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. Have been working on this for 3 days and can't figure it out. Even had a guy in New Zealand who is usually my messiah of SQL and he can't figure it out so I'll be impressed if someone knows the answer. I will buy a crate of beer for the person who solves this for me as this problem is costing me money! Maybe even 2 if done by end of tomorrow 6pm GMT! COnnecting Sql Server Remotely Using Management Studio
I have a sql server 2005 remotely, need to connect from client using sql management studio. I am unable to connect from one of the client machine and able to connect from different machine. The tcp/ip, named pipes and sql browser is enabled in (sscm)server and windows firewall is off in client. I am getting (provider: sql network interfaces, error 26 - error locating server/instance specified) Please throw your suggestions.

Cannot Connect To SQL Server With SQL Server Management Studio Express
I recently installed SQL Server Management Studio Express, and used it to connect remotely to SQL Server 2005 Express. The first connect worked fine. It was suggested to me to update ODBC drivers to connect to the server using Microsoft Access. In doing so, I found what I thought were Studio Express updates and tried to install them. From then on, I could no longer access the server. The error was a nebulous one that indicated that is could not find the server. I verified that the the server was set up correctly by installing Studio Express on another machine, and it connected fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled. When I ran it, I did not get the "first time use" routine, and still could not connect. I reinstalled MDAC with my Windows XP sp2 disk and reinstalling Studio Express, and still could not connect. I started a thread - http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/ShowPost.aspx?postid=2557611&siteid=1 - on SQL Server Express foram, and they verified that the server was set up correctly. They suggested that the client network protocol stack on your computer is broken. They suggested I post here to seek help in fixing it. Any help would be much appreciated. Steve Colino

Cannot Connect To Sql Express Via ASP.NET After I Attached And Detached My Db To Sql Management Studio
Hello everybody, I have an ASP.NET 2.0 website running on a windows server 2003 - sql express management studio installed. Today I had to make some changes in my database, add some columns, and so on... So I put the app_offline.htm into the root of the web application, so the IIS unloaded the application domain, attached it in the sql management studio, made the changes I had to do and detached the db. Ok - then I removed the app_offline.html from the root of the application and looked at my internet explorer telling me that the user NT_network... cannot login... What did I do wrong? I attached it, detached it, and at once something went wrong... I tried everything, at least I copied the whole application to another directory and.... It worked fine again! So, can anybody help me, I don`t know what I did wrong or rather how to make changes in my sql express for the future, not having trouble with any security issues... regards Simon

Use VPN To Connect Remotely To SQL Express Server
Hello, I'm using a Windows XP Home laptop to connect to a network of one of my customers. The administrator of the customer has given me a username and password for a VPN connection. I've got the VPN connection working and I can ping the SQL Express server. This server is using Windows Authentication. For the users of my VB application we have added a group to the Active Directory and added this group as a user to the SQL Express Server. This works and the users can access the database from within the application. The SQL Express Server allows remote connections and the browser service is also running. I would like to use the SQL management Studio Express on my laptop to access the remote SQL Express server and manage the database files. To do this I first connect to the remote LAN using VPN and add the address of the SQL EXpress server in the field 'Server name' of the 'Connect to server' screen. The authentication field is set to Windows Authentication. However the username is greyed out and states the login for the SQL Express server on my laptop: laptopusername. How can I correct this? I don't know whether the username of the VPN connection is in the Active Directory. Should this be the case and should this user also be added to the login/user of the SQL Express server? And how do I get the Management Studio to connect to the remote server? Could XP Home be the bottleneck as it cannot logon to a domain? Anyone any ideas?

Server Express, Management Studio Express, Visual Studio Standard, And An ASP.NET Page....
I believe I'm missing something as far as my configuration goes...I'm new to working with SQL server and the databinding I'm trying to do. I have an ASP.NET page that has a radio button list box which I have databound to a database served up by SQL Express I'm having a lot of problems with connections... I was going to enumerate the behavior under each configuration (local only, remote tcp/ip only, remote pipes only, remote both), but I've realized that it is just flaky. Sometimes I can connect to the db with SQL Studio express, sometimes not. Sometimes I can add new tables and edit tables, sometimes not. Sometimes I can create a new connection when trying to databind from within Visual Studio, and sometimes not (sometimes I can't even connect, other times, I can connect initially but when I build a query through the designer it then has problems). Lastly, sometimes the ASP.NET page works correctly and sometimes not. This all seems to be mostly independent of how I configure SQL Server as far as what kinds of connections are allowed. I thought there was a pattern, but as I tested it more rigorously I found there wasn't. What I would like to do is be connected to the same DB with Visual Studio and SQL Studio, edit the DB as I wish, databind to it, and test my ASP.NET page, all without needing to jump through a bunch of hoops (although right now I wouldn't even know what those hoops are...it's just a shot in the dark as to what will work). It's all quite maddening and any help would be appreciated.

Remotely Restore A Db Using Management Studio
Hi I am trying to restore a remote database hosted on mysql server, using "SQL Server Management Studio Express". Now I can connect to the server, and see the databases as well. However, when I select restore option and want to specify the source using the Source for restore, and select From device, I can only select file from the remote machine, and don't get to select the file from my local file system. And the problem is that I don't have easy access to the machine hosting the MS sql server. So is there any way I can select my backup file from local machine. If this cannot be done using SQL Server Management Studio, can you please suggest other relates programs. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestion/info. Many thanks, ML.

Can't Connect Remotely To SQL Express On Virtual Private Server
I've just bought a Virtual Private Server Account because I want to host a number of different ASP.NET sites, each backed by their own SQL database. I've downloaded SQLEXPRE.EXE and SQLServer2005_SSMEE-x64.msi to the server and installed the database engine and Management Studio Express on the VPS. My problem is that I cannot access the SQLEXPRESS on my server from my local machine. The Management Studio Express cannot get logged in. I've used "Surface Area Configuration Manager" to allow "Local and remote connections" using TCP/IP only. I've used SQL Server Configuration Manager" to enable the TCP/IP protocol. After making these changes I've stopped and started the SQL server - and even rebooted the machine. I've created a login "Remote User" for this access. I've added sqlservr.exe as an exception to the firewall. What else do I need to do? Is there a simpleton's guide to completing this task?

I have read all of the posts regarding this subject as well as 3"Dummies" guides and I keep having the same problems. I have a verysimple multi-user application that has to hit a database. Wecuerrently have this system deployed and it is working fine on adomain based network. We are scaling back and the network we will beusing is now a workgroup not a domain.It should be simple. I have XP boxes (clients) trying to hit the SQLServer Express database on a Windows Server 2003 machine. It is aclosed network so security is not an issue. I am trying to make thisthing wide open. All I want is for the user to be logged in on hisclient machine, run the application, and access/update the databasewithout having to re-authenticate to the SQL server. I want windowsto handle all of the authentication between the XP machines and theServer 2003 machine.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Visual Studio Database File And SQL Server Management Studio Express Question
I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason

SQL Server Management Express Studio Management Tools
I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

Hi, I am currently looged into the OS (windows xp pro,belongs to domian ABC) as user vdm. I have connected to VPN for a client and would now like to connect to their sql server database using sql server management studio. This sql server installation is on a remote domain called XYZ. When I open sql server studio and select windows authentication, my local domain ABC is selected and greyed out...I would like to change this to XYZ domain...how to achieve this ? thanks in advance

Database=Prism_Project_db; Server=(local); Integrated Security=SSPI; MultipleActiveResultSets=True ... as the connection string, i get: Cannot open database "Prism_Project_db" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'R-LAPTOPRyan Holdren'.Yet I can connect using sql server management studio, no problem: Server Type: Database Engine Server: R-Laptop Authentication: Windows Authentication which connects as "R-LAPTOPRyan Holdren". Cannot Connect To Sql Server Management Studio - SSL Issue?
We are working with a need to implement SSL and I used the IIS resource kits selfssl.exe tool to create a certification to test somethings on localhost. This worked well and I logged off, went home, logged back on from home via vnc and worked some more. No problems. I then logged off and called it a night. I did not uninstall the personall ssl certificate. At midnight, my machine reboots and defrags. Just including all the 'variables' I can think of. This morning I came into work and noticed that I could not successfully connect to the website. Then I noticed that I was not connecting to Sql Server. I got the error: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) Okay. So I went to the event viewer and there was a new event, beginning after my reboot at midnight: A fatal error occurred when attempting to access the SSL server credential private key. The error code returned from the cryptographic module is 0x80090016. So I ran the certmgr.msc tool and removed the certificate from my personal folder. I still could not connect. Not after a reboot, not after stopping and restarting SQL Server, and not after removing the cert via IIS and stopping and restarting IIS.So I decided I would go to Management Studio and test the connection there. I could not connect via Management Studio! If anyone has an experience to lend here, I would be appreciative. Thank you.

New server - Windows 2003 with latest patches (always up to date) Symantec Antivirus Coporate Edition 10.1 SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition If I run SQL Server Management Studio, it connects fine to the server. Then attach a datafile for my application which is installed on the server. I can run app and open database. All works fine. Cannot Connect To Reporting Services Using IE Or Sql Server Management Studio
I have installed 2005 in a new machine with reporting services and configured the reporting services fine. I see the virtual directories fine in IIS but when I try connecting to the report server using IE (http://localhost/reports or http://servername/reports) i get page cannot be displayed errro. SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???
When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data. Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing). When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server. Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine? Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic? The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the following: Select Computer The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer. Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer O Remote computer Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option? Hi, I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum. Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it. I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list. Why Can't I See My Web Developer Express Database From SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Hi, I'm completely new to SQL Server and ASP.NET, so please bear with me on my learning curve! I've installed Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express (on the same PC). I then used Web Developer Express to successfully create a new database with a couple of tables in it. So far so good. I then installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the same PC and tried to connect to my new database. The connection to the SQL Server instance appears to work OK (using Windows Authentication) but I can't see the database I previously created. All I can see are the System Databases. Does anyone know what the solution might be?

Connecting VB Express Files To SQL Server Management Studio Express
Really confused ... I created 2 tables in a VB Express program (which went well). Problem is that I can't see/find those tables with MSME. I don't really understand how to connect the MSME to where the tables are. I created the tables under My DocumentsData and they are DBapp.mdf + DBapp_log.LDF and the tables are Items and Preferences. The VB application can "see" the tables OK. Do I need to move the tables to C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSQL.1MSQLDATA (like the Adventureworks installation which I haven't done) or what? How Can One Connect (remotely) To SQLExpress Which Is Installed On &&"Windows XP Home&&"
Hi all, I have to deal with a private network of laptops which are all equiped with preinstalled "Windows XP home" I've installed SQLExpress on one of these, but I cannot connect on it from the rest of the laptops. (I've successfuly done this with "Windows XP profesional" though, and local connections work fine as well). I've already setup the SQLExpress to accept conections throuigh TCP/IP but I can not think of something else. (Security comes to mind, but I do not know how to resolve it on "Windows XP Home"). SQL Server Management Studio Cannot Connect To Local Instance Of SQL Server 2005 SP2
Hello, I just installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition from my company's DVD. It was installed with the setting of using both Integrated windows authenitication as well as basic named authenication. I installed all the options too: Database Engine, Analysis Services, Reporting Services, SQL Server compact edition, and Integration Services. When I look at services there are: SQL Server Integration Services, SQL Server Analysis Services, SQL Server Reporting Services, and SQL Server Browser. All of which are running. Something that took me offguard was the installation did not ask me to provide an SA password. Other than that, the install looked like it went good. I was able to connect to the local instance of the SQL Server 2005 using the SQL Server Management Studio. I could connect with SA, or connect with Integrated Windows Authenication. Whoohoo. Off and running! As a matter of fact, for the SA account I could use any password and it would still log me in. First thing I did was I went in to the copy wizard to attempt to copy a database from a server on our network to my local box. First it asked me for the remote server. Then when I specified my local instance in the wizard, the wizard complained that my local instance was NOT SQL Server 2005. Doh! This I didn't understand. I figured maybe I need to check for MS updates. Sure enough, I found that ther was a SP2 and then a hot-fix for that SP2. I applied both. Now I cannot connect from SQL Server Management studio to my local instance of SQL Server 2005 database server. I get the following error: "An error occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)" However, I went in to see what other services I could connect to, and here's the results: Analysis Services : OK! Reporting Services (Windows Auth/Basic/Forms) : NG "The reporting Services Instance could not be found (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient)" SQL Server Compact Edition : NG "The database cannot be found. Check the path to the database. [ File Name = CCG092 ] (SQL Server Compact Edition ADO.NET Data Provider) Integration Services : OK! I can connect to other SQL Server databases on our network. However, just not my local one. No one on the network can connect to me either. I even turned off my windows firewall and still no luck connecting to my own. So something really went wrong when I applied SP2, however, admittedly from the error message when I tried to use the copy wizard, something was probably already wrong. Any ideas? Thanks!

SQL Server Configuration Manager reports SQL Server2005 services: SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) Running. This would indicate the name of the SQL server is "MSSQLSERVER" correct? I chose "default" instance during the install and that is the name it gave itself. I tried connecting to the server using the following for the Server Name: MSSQLSERVER and .MSSQLSERVER neither works. The only thing that works for my installation is just plain "." (no quotes) and nothing else. Can this be correct because I can't find any reference to this. Thanks.

Hi all, I have read/studied (i) Working with Databases in Visual Web Developer 2005 Express in http://quickstarts.asp.net/QuickStartv20/aspnet/doc/data/vwd.aspx, (ii) Xcopy Deployment (SQL Server Express) in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165716.aspx, (iii) User Instances for Non-Administrators in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143684.aspx, and (iv) Embedding SQL Server Server Express in Applications in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms165660.aspx. I do not understand the concepts and procedures to do Xcopy and User Instances for non-administrators completely-I do not know how to connect to databases and create database diagrams or schemas using the Database Explorer. I have a stand-alone Windows XP Pro PC. I have created a ChemDatabase with 3 dbo tables in the SQL Server Management Studio of my SQL Server Express and a website of my VWD Express application with an App_Data folder. I am not able to proceed to use Xcopy and user instance to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase to my App_Data folder. Please help and give me some detailed procedures/instructions to bring the 3 dbo tables of ChemDatabase (or ChemDatabase itself) from the SQL Server Management Studio Express to the App_Data folder of the website of my VWD Express project? I Can No Longer Connect To My SQL Server Express 2005 From Manager Studio Express
Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server. I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah. Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that? Thanks in advance for any input.
