Cannot Connect To SQL Server Express Edition Using Its Management Studio
Please, I use tyhe Visual Studion 2005 SQL Server Express Edition Management Studio (SMSE) to create the backend database and trying to set the connectionstring from the web config file, but what I continue to get as an error is that "<computername>/ASPNET" login failed for that user, cannot login to the Management Studio.
This is my expression from the web config file

I've seen the following error posted when people try to connect to their server via their applications but didn't see anyone having problems when trying to connect with SQL Server Management Studio Express. On my home machine without permanent network connections enabled, I cannot get the Management Studio connect to the database server. Always get this error: Cannot connect ot MPLIAMSQLEXPRESS Additional Information: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, erro: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server) I have used the SQL Surface Area Configuration Tool to reset the defaults to allow remote connections, stopped and restarted the server, but still get the same message. Cannot Connect To Report Server From Management Studio Express
hello there, I appreciate any help on the following issue: When I want to connect to a local report server on as shown in the "Reporting Services Tools" tutorial (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-au/library/aa337424.aspx), the SSMSE does not show the option "Reporting Services" in the "Server type" drop down list in the "Connect to server" dialog. The tutorial says "In the Server type list, select Reporting Services. If Reporting Services is not on the list, it is not installed." This must be wrong as the SSCM clearly shows an installed and running "SQL Server Reporting Service (...)". Also if i call the webinterface (http://localhost/reports/) a page loads that says "SQL Server Reporting Services Home" with some options. And here something is not correct too. The "contents" tab of the report manager says "There are no items in Home." I started to work on some basic tutorials using the sql server business development studio, and everything works fine. I can create reports, which derive data from the AdventureWorks db properly. Can anyone tell me the adequate steps to fix the SSMSE connection problem and the webinterface view problem? Here are some additional informations: I use WinXP SP2, which makes the IIS version 5.1 SQL server is 2005 express with advanced features and i installed the management toolkit, and the AdventureWorks db. Installation history is as follows: .NET framework 2.0 + VS2005 professional edition was installed 1. installed ss2005express+advanced features, on a named instance. worked fine. I did not install the SSMSE at this point, as i knew it is included in the toolkit too. 2. configured the reporting services through the "reporting services configuration" tool. worked fine. 3. installed the management tool kit. worked fine. 4. installed the AdventureWorks db. installed, but was not attached automaticaly to the database engine. 5. attached the AdventureWorks db to the database engine manually. worked fine, can be viewed and accessed properly. So there I am. I have no clue what went wrong. A last hint that makes me think is this: In the SSCM the sql server an the sql server reporting services have different instance ids (MSSQL.1 and MSSQL.2 respectively). Cannot Install SQL Server Management Studio After Removing Express Edition
I'm trying to upgrade my management studio to the full version, I uninstalled Express edition and started the install for the full version, but I get an error stating "you cannot install this component because it is already installed". I had a word with one of the guys in the office and he said the only way he's ever been able to get round this is by flattening the entire PC and starting again. Obviously I want to avoid that!

Hi all, I'm having a little trouble connecting to a SQLExpress instance on a remote domain using SQL Server Management Studio Express.I've read that by default the program is set up locally only, so have edited the Surface Area Configuration. It only gives me the option to edit 'Services and Connections' on the localhost, but have edited the Remote Connections to use TCP/IP and Named Pipes. In the Management Studio, I enter the server name, and login credentials. I am unable to connect to my database on a VPS server using server management studio express. I have installed SQL 2005 Express Edition on a Windows 2003 Web Edition server. Everything installed correctly, no errors to be found. I also have: Local & Remote Connections using TCP/IP only turne don SQL Browser is running as well. I have tried connecting with the most recent CTP of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.1399.00 When trying to connect using the SA account I recieve: 'An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. How Can I Access SQL Server Compact Edition With SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Hello, I just installed SQL Server Compact Edition, since I am considering using it instead of SQL Server Express for a local database in my application. The documentation mentioned that I could use SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect to the Compact Edition and create and manipulate databases. To try to connect, I run Management Studio and bring up the "Connect to Server" dialog. Unfortunately, the pull-down list of "Server name"s does not include the SQL Server Compact Edition server. I do not know how to type in the server name manually, so I cannot connect. To install Compact Edition, I downloaded it and ran "SQLServerCE31-EN.msi". This installed, and I assume registered, a number of DLLs in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server Compact Editionv3.1". Is there perhaps an additional step that I left out to complete the installation? Might I need an upgrade to some other components? Using SQL Server Management Studio Tools To Manage Dbs On SQL Server Express Edition
Hopefully a simple question: Is it possible to use Maintenance Plans created on SQL Server Management Studio (installed as part of an instance of SQL Server 2005 Standard Ed.) to back up databases running on an instance of SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services? I don't need directions, just whether or not it is permitted. I've been able to create the plans including establishing connections to from SSMS to the the SQL Express instance, but they keep erroring out. I just need to know if this is actually permitted since Maintenance Plans are not available on Management Studio Express Edition. Thank you in advance for your help.

SQL Server CE And SQL Server Management Studio Express Edition Yet Again
When I try to open a CE database from SSMSEE, I get the dreaded "You are trying to access an older version of a SQL Server Compact Edition database" error, with "Db version = 3505053, Requested version = 3004180." I am using what I believe to be the latest version of SSCE (3.5) and the latest version of SSMSEE (2005 SP2, Help|About reports the version as 9.00.3042.00). The database is created without error, compacted, repaired, and so forth, with no change to the error. Do I need to install or reinstall something, and if so what? Thanks.

Cannot Connect To SQL Server With SQL Server Management Studio Express
I recently installed SQL Server Management Studio Express, and used it to connect remotely to SQL Server 2005 Express. The first connect worked fine. It was suggested to me to update ODBC drivers to connect to the server using Microsoft Access. In doing so, I found what I thought were Studio Express updates and tried to install them. From then on, I could no longer access the server. The error was a nebulous one that indicated that is could not find the server. I verified that the the server was set up correctly by installing Studio Express on another machine, and it connected fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled. When I ran it, I did not get the "first time use" routine, and still could not connect. I reinstalled MDAC with my Windows XP sp2 disk and reinstalling Studio Express, and still could not connect. I started a thread - http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/ShowPost.aspx?postid=2557611&siteid=1 - on SQL Server Express foram, and they verified that the server was set up correctly. They suggested that the client network protocol stack on your computer is broken. They suggested I post here to seek help in fixing it. Any help would be much appreciated. Steve Colino

Cannot Connect To Sql Express Via ASP.NET After I Attached And Detached My Db To Sql Management Studio
Hello everybody, I have an ASP.NET 2.0 website running on a windows server 2003 - sql express management studio installed. Today I had to make some changes in my database, add some columns, and so on... So I put the app_offline.htm into the root of the web application, so the IIS unloaded the application domain, attached it in the sql management studio, made the changes I had to do and detached the db. Ok - then I removed the app_offline.html from the root of the application and looked at my internet explorer telling me that the user NT_network... cannot login... What did I do wrong? I attached it, detached it, and at once something went wrong... I tried everything, at least I copied the whole application to another directory and.... It worked fine again! So, can anybody help me, I don`t know what I did wrong or rather how to make changes in my sql express for the future, not having trouble with any security issues... regards Simon

Server Express, Management Studio Express, Visual Studio Standard, And An ASP.NET Page....
I believe I'm missing something as far as my configuration goes...I'm new to working with SQL server and the databinding I'm trying to do. I have an ASP.NET page that has a radio button list box which I have databound to a database served up by SQL Express I'm having a lot of problems with connections... I was going to enumerate the behavior under each configuration (local only, remote tcp/ip only, remote pipes only, remote both), but I've realized that it is just flaky. Sometimes I can connect to the db with SQL Studio express, sometimes not. Sometimes I can add new tables and edit tables, sometimes not. Sometimes I can create a new connection when trying to databind from within Visual Studio, and sometimes not (sometimes I can't even connect, other times, I can connect initially but when I build a query through the designer it then has problems). Lastly, sometimes the ASP.NET page works correctly and sometimes not. This all seems to be mostly independent of how I configure SQL Server as far as what kinds of connections are allowed. I thought there was a pattern, but as I tested it more rigorously I found there wasn't. What I would like to do is be connected to the same DB with Visual Studio and SQL Studio, edit the DB as I wish, databind to it, and test my ASP.NET page, all without needing to jump through a bunch of hoops (although right now I wouldn't even know what those hoops are...it's just a shot in the dark as to what will work). It's all quite maddening and any help would be appreciated.

Visual Studio Database File And SQL Server Management Studio Express Question
I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason

I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

Cannot Connect To Sql Server Management Studio - SSL Issue?
We are working with a need to implement SSL and I used the IIS resource kits selfssl.exe tool to create a certification to test somethings on localhost. This worked well and I logged off, went home, logged back on from home via vnc and worked some more. No problems. I then logged off and called it a night. I did not uninstall the personall ssl certificate. At midnight, my machine reboots and defrags. Just including all the 'variables' I can think of. This morning I came into work and noticed that I could not successfully connect to the website. Then I noticed that I was not connecting to Sql Server. I got the error: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the pre-login handshake. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) Okay. So I went to the event viewer and there was a new event, beginning after my reboot at midnight: A fatal error occurred when attempting to access the SSL server credential private key. The error code returned from the cryptographic module is 0x80090016. So I ran the certmgr.msc tool and removed the certificate from my personal folder. I still could not connect. Not after a reboot, not after stopping and restarting SQL Server, and not after removing the cert via IIS and stopping and restarting IIS.So I decided I would go to Management Studio and test the connection there. I could not connect via Management Studio! If anyone has an experience to lend here, I would be appreciative. Thank you.

I currently can't connecto to my database in SQL Server 2005 (enterprise) from the SQL Server Management Studio itself! as soon as I try to use any functions, I get cryptic errors found below. New server - Windows 2003 with latest patches (always up to date) Symantec Antivirus Coporate Edition 10.1 SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition If I run SQL Server Management Studio, it connects fine to the server. Then attach a datafile for my application which is installed on the server. I can run app and open database. All works fine. Updating To SQL Server Management Studio Developer Edition Is Not Working
I got VS Pro which came with SQL Server Management Studio Developer Edition. Very exciting! However, when I go to update from SQL Server Management Studio Express to Dev Edition it says that there are tools / components already installed. I completely uninstalled everything having to do with SQL Server from my machine and tried again. It still says that the tools / components are installed. I see that there are still several instances of SQL Server still on my machine. So I tried reinstalling Express again. However, now the Configuration Manager has a snap-in that won't start. Cannot Connect To Reporting Services Using IE Or Sql Server Management Studio
I have installed 2005 in a new machine with reporting services and configured the reporting services fine. I see the virtual directories fine in IIS but when I try connecting to the report server using IE (http://localhost/reports or http://servername/reports) i get page cannot be displayed errro. SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???
When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data. Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing). When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server. Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine? Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic? The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area": (1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the following: Select Computer The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer. Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer O Remote computer Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option? I am attempting to use the SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition (Management Studio) to create/manage a Compact Edition 3.5 database. My problem is that I cannot even create/open the compact database in Management Studio. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Hi, I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum. Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it. I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list. Why Can't I See My Web Developer Express Database From SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Hi, I'm completely new to SQL Server and ASP.NET, so please bear with me on my learning curve! I've installed Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express (on the same PC). I then used Web Developer Express to successfully create a new database with a couple of tables in it. So far so good. I then installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the same PC and tried to connect to my new database. The connection to the SQL Server instance appears to work OK (using Windows Authentication) but I can't see the database I previously created. All I can see are the System Databases. Does anyone know what the solution might be?

Connecting VB Express Files To SQL Server Management Studio Express
Really confused ... I created 2 tables in a VB Express program (which went well). Problem is that I can't see/find those tables with MSME. I don't really understand how to connect the MSME to where the tables are. I created the tables under My DocumentsData and they are DBapp.mdf + DBapp_log.LDF and the tables are Items and Preferences. The VB application can "see" the tables OK. Do I need to move the tables to C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSQL.1MSQLDATA (like the Adventureworks installation which I haven't done) or what? SQL Server Management Studio don't see local SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition x64 on Vista Ultimate x64 Hi, I have strange problem with SQL Server Management Studio on Vista Ultimate x64. Nothing change after installing all newest service packs or hot fixes. I have two running SQL servers on my local machine and all surrounding SQL services running as well. I have turn on TCP/IP and Named pipes on both of this servers. Actually I have reinstalled second server after first one wasn't contactable in any way... After finished installation of second one and after applying service packs I turn on SQL Server Management Studio and still nothing in local servers pane when Browsing for servers to connect but in network servers after few seconds I see one of my local servers (first one installed) and one SQL Server 2000 on other machine (on this one I can't connect because of time out error). Also when browsing for servers in Local Servers I see my machine in Integration Services. Only difference between this running services is that Integration service log on as Network Service and all other SQL services log on as Local System account and on SQL Server that is invisible I have also SQL Server Reporting Services running. How Can I Install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition's Management Studio On A Desktop Machine?
I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Prof Edition on a Vista machine and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on a Windows 2000 server. They will be used as a development environment for us. As we need to management the SQL Server 2005, we would like to install the 2005 Developer SSMS on the Vista machine such that we can manage the SQL Server 2005 developer instance installed on that Win2k machine. However, the system does not allow us to do it. We have the express edition autoamtically installed while we installed the Vistual Studio. Is there any workaround that i can still install the 2005 developer SSMS without uninstall the sql server 2005 Xpress version? Or, I have to uninstall the Xpress version before i can install the 2005 developer's SSMS? Please help!
