Update Certain Fields From A Grid View ?
Hi all,I asked a similar question a few weeks ago but I didn't explain myself to well so I was hoping for some more input.I have created a webpage in Visual web developer that contains a gridview that points to an SQL table.All works well as far as searching the table and sorting.  The SQL table itself is Droped ( deleted ) and then re-created every 1 minute from a query to a linked DB2 database  so that we have a "live" table of our DB2 system but in SQL.....However,There is now a requirement to be able to ADD data to this SQL table. eg: a comments field.. from the website.My procedure for re-creating the SQL DB is now useless as any data added through the website would be lost when the table gets re-created.What is the best way for me to achieve a permanent table in SQL that gets updated from the Linked server DB2 but that I can also add comments from the front end (Website Gridview)..I'm assuming some sort of update query and a join to a seperate, permanent table that contains the comments?.Please help. Ray..

Insert, Update, Delete Rows In A VIEW ....
Hello,

Is it possible to insert rows into a view, update rows in a view and delete rows in a view?
If so, how does T-SQL handle it when a VIEW is the result of following query?

CREATE VIEW view_name AS
SELECT column_name(s)
FROM table_name1
INNER JOIN table_name2 ON table_name1.col = table_name2.col
WHERE condition

Thanks in advance,
Erke.

How To Insert, Update, Delete And View Database Values
I am creating a website.
i have completed the GUI. i have labels on the left side of the form and a text box for each of those labels on the right side of the form. i have the two dropdown boxes that you have helped me create and bind. now im stuck on how to start the code to get this all working. i know what i need it to do (pseudocode) but dont know how to write the code for it. these books and online sources, really dont say where to put things, they just give examples, not stating where to place it.
I am using a SQL database called Manufacturers
i would like to insert or update, but not delete records wtih this tool
pixelsyndicate mentioned using the GUI to do the code for me, would love to know how to do this.
any help would be awesome, or any good beginner resources would help too

Thanks

Updating Grid View That Has Dropdown Lists
I have gridview bound with SqlDataSource control. One of the grid columns is a dropdown list which is populated programatically, (the gridview has template column with edittemplate field with dropdown list), dropdown Value contains of course collection of IDs.Please tell me how to declare UpdateCommand which will update the row with the dropdown list. The problem is with parameter regarding the column with dropdown list. When i declare this parameter and bind it to SelectedValue property of the dropdownlist from edittemplate tag - it doesnt work, because datasource control cannot see this dropdown list. So, how am i supposed to declare the ID of the row being updated in <updateParameters>? Thanks in advance!

Retrieving ID After INSERT Behind The Scenes - Not Using A Grid View
Hi there. I looked through many other posts describing scope_identity but I am trying to achieve the same thing from the code behind. i.e. I need to some how call a method to execute the insert command and then return the ID so I can update other tables with this value.
I was going down the road of something like:
addnew as sqldatasource = new sqldatasource
addnew.insertcommand = "Insert into....; def @NewID as scope_identity"
addnew.insert()

The problem is I don't know how to add a output parameter using VB or how to retrieve it.
Any help would be much appreciated, this is doing my head in....

How To Change Column Names In The Grid View Programatically?
I have consistent column names that load into a grid view. I now need to change the names in the grid view programatically. I was originally trying to get cute with SQL to do this, but I've been told my below solution will not work and I'm better off to do this in the presentation layer.  If this is true, remember I'm still wet behind the ears here...how do I do this in vs2005?
Here's my post to the SQL devs to give you an idea what I'm trying to do.
I have a query that grabs fields from a denormalized table. The result is column names Week1, Week2, Week3....Week26.  Users want to see the actual date instead of Week#. So I have a table (lkpdatecaptions ) that contains the fields "fldfieldno" and "Fldcaption". fldfieldno    Fldcaption-----------  --------------11             9/07/200712             9/14/200713            9/21/2007So fieldno 11 represent week1 and so on. So my hope is to update the alias with a query like: Select fldcaption from forecast.tlkpdatecaptionswhere fldfieldno = 11That quey returns the value of 9/7/2007 and is the value I need to represent the coumn alias name.My current query looks like this:SELECT  SUM(forecast.tblforecastdenormalized.fldwk01) AS WEEK1,So can I do something like the following?SELECT  SUM(forecast.tblforecastdenormalized.fldwk01) AS (Select forecast.tlkpdatecaptions.fldcaption from forecast.tlkpdatecaptions where fldfieldno = 11), ...

Using Membership Db To Lookup Data In Another Db And Bring Back Into A Grid View (total Newbie To .net)
I have the membership stuff up and running.  I've added a field to the membership table called custnmbr.  Once a user logs in, I want store his custnbmr in the session and use that to lookup data in another db.
ie: Joe logs in and his custnumbr is 001, he goes to the login success page and sees his list of service calls which is:
select top 10 * from svc00200 where custnmbr = 001 (the membership.custnmbr for the logged in user)
I know how to do this in old ASP using session variables....but I have no idea where to even start with .Net.
Many thanks

VS2005 - Using Detailsview To Update, Insert And Delete Rows From SQL 2005 Database. Delete And Insert Work But Update Does Not - No Errors Returned

How Can I Return Data From A Database And Fill A Data Grid View?
Hi ! I have a textbox and a Search button. When the user inputs a value and press the button, i  want a datagrid to be filled.
The following code runs:
Dim connect As New Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection( _
"Server=SrvnameSQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=True; UID= ;password= ; database=dtbsname")
connect.Open()
Dim cmd As New SqlCommand
Dim valor As New SqlParameter("@valor", SqlDbType.VarChar, 50)
cmd.CommandText = "Ver_Contactos_Reducido"
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
cmd.Connection = connect
cmd.Parameters.Add(valor)
cmd.Parameters("@valor").Value = texto
Dim adapter As New SqlDataAdapter(cmd)
Dim ds As New System.Data.DataSet()
adapter.Fill(ds)
GridViewContactos.DataSource = ds
GridViewContactos.DataBind()
connect.Close()
I drag a datagrid on the page and only changed its Id.
Into the SQL database the stored procedure is the following:
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[Ver_Contactos_Reducido]
(@Valor VARCHAR(100))
AS
BEGIN
SET NOCOUNT ON;
SELECT NombreRazonSocial, Nombre, Apellido,TelefonoLaboral,
Interno, TelefonoCelular, Email1, Organizacion
FROM CONTACTOS
WHERE NombreRazonSocial = @Valor OR Nombre = @Valor OR Apellido = @Valor OR  TelefonoLaboral = @Valor OR Interno = @Valor OR
TelefonoCelular =@Valor OR Email1 = @Valor OR Organizacion= @Valor
END
When i run the page i can't see the datagrid, and after i enter a text and press the button, nothing happens. What am i doing wrong??
Thks!!

Update Statistics Task Tries To Update View

Hi,

I have encountered an error when running a maintenance plan update statistics task. It tries to update statistics on a view (non-indexed) which results in an error. Tha task moves on so its not causing any major issues but it looks bad in the job history

Has anyone encountered this behaviour and maybe found a solution?

from Dups, t02
where Dups.id = t02.id
and Dups.run = t02.run

When I run this querry I get the following message:

View 'DUPS' is not updatable because the FROM clause names multiple tables.

Does anyone know of a way that I might get around this or another possible solution to my requirement?

Thanks in advance,

Problems With UPDATE And DELETE
I have two buttons on my page, one which will update content the other which will delete content from my slq database.

I get this error "CS1501: No overload for method 'deleteBlockContent' takes '2' arguments" when I click on my delete button.
This is my method for updating - UPDATE [CMS] SET [BlockName] = @BlockName, [BlockContent] = @BlockContent WHERE (([BlockID] = @Original_BlockID))
This is my C# code behind the update button:protected void btnUpdateBlock_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)

catch (Exception ex) { lblFeedback.Text = ex.ToString(); }
finally
{lblFeedback.Visible = true;
ta.Dispose();
}
}
This is my method for deleting - DELETE FROM [CMS] WHERE (([BlockID] = @Original_BlockID))

{CMSTableAdapter ta = new CMSTableAdapter();

}

}
Can somebody please explain why this is happening and how to remedy this problem.

Update Or Delete With Insert?
Hi All,
I have this project I'm working on it's Product Content Management System rewrite. I got to the point of updating the Product By Sku and not sure if I should use UPDATE statement or I should DELETE sections assosiated with the ProductContentID and then re-insert them again? I'm not sure which is more afficient?
I can really do both and it's really not that complicated, the only problem I see with DELETE then INSERT is the ProductContentSectionId in the Sections table is going to grow very fast and I'm a bit concerned about it.
We use SQL Server 2000 and we have about 4 bound tables where we keep the data. The one I'm talking about is the sections table where we keep the actual types of product content like a BoxShot, Description, Key Features and so on...
Thank you in advance!

Cascading Update And Delete
If we want to maintain the data in relationships.
There are two ways to do it.
1. Auto (Like Cascading Update And Delete)
2. Manually (Like In Stored Procedures)
I read an intresting article
http://imar.spaanjaars.com/QuickDocId.aspx?quickdoc=419
In this article Imar has choosen the second way (Manually).
And when I talk to Imar.
He said, "Cascading deletes would have worked equally well in this situation. However, I personally don't like them too much. I am much rather in control, enabling me to delete what I want and when I want it. I could, for example, keep certain data for "time travelling scenarios" (e.g. the state things were in some time ago) or I might want to keep it for other purposes."
Can any one help me to choose the better one.

Datasource Won't Update On Delete

here's my code for my dataadaptor:

SqlDataAdapter adapter = new SqlDataAdapter();
adapter.SelectCommand = new SqlCommand("select * from tblExtRef", conn);
adapter.SelectCommand.Connection = conn;

SqlParameter parm;
SqlCommand cmd;
cmd = new SqlCommand("DELETE FROM tblextref WHERE extrefid = @extrefid",conn);
parm = cmd.Parameters.Add("@extrefid", SqlDbType.Int , 40, "extrefid");
parm.SourceColumn = "ExtRefid";
//parm.SourceVersion = DataRowVersion.Original;
//parm.Direction = ParameterDirection.InputOutput;
//SourceVersion = DataRowVersion.Original;
adapter.DeleteCommand = cmd;

Update, Delete, Insert
I am trying to update a SQL database with data from a Wang system. The Wang data is dumped to a txt file. I then import it into an update table in SQL via Access. Some of the data is new and some of the data is updated records. At this point I have been trying to create a script to update and add data to a table via the query tool in SQL Then delete data from the update table.

I was able to get the UPDATE and DELETE to work but I have not figured out how to insert new records at the same time? Can I use an IF statement? I will apreciate any help or sample code, Thanks.

Use Insert Update Delete In DTS
I have an Access table from which I have to get data periodically in 30
minutes everyday to an SQL server table. both have the same data structure. I
want to get all the new records as insert, modified records as update and
deleted records in source table that still exists in target table to be
deleted. I have tried searching on the net. They all explain about using the
insert, update and delete statements in DDQ. I understand that but how do i
change the related constant in the ActiveX script for eg: Main =
DTSTransformstat_UpdateQuery for update. I saw somewhere an eg. where i use a
select case according to some column in the table that has to be changed to
insert or update but i dont want to add a new column for this. some solution
that will compare the source table and target table with sql queries using
exists. but i cant identify target and source in a query if i use the
"Execute SQL task". Can someone help.

Limiting UPDATE And DELETE
I know how to do this in MySQL; but I was hoping there was a way to do it in MS SQL.

I want to be able to limit the number of rows an UPDATE or DELETE will effect regardless of the WHERE clause. I want to do this as a stop gap in the event that there is a logical error in the WHERE clause that would make it effect more rows than is humanly intended.

If I write a complex query that I know should drill down to only affecting one row, I just want to lock it in before I run it on database and take the risk of damaging some data.

In MySQL you would just do something like this:

Code:

DELETE FROM table_name WHERE ... LIMIT 1;

The only thing close to LIMIT I could come up with for MS SQL was TOP but it seems to only work for SELECT.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I ask this because if you screw up; manually saving 1, 2 or even 5 rows is a lot easier than having to rescue a whole table of data (even if it on a development server).

Delete/insert Vs Update
Im trying to keep a mirror image of some data Im getting from Quickbooks.

As the records are inserted into the database I need to check if a record exists and either update or insert a new one.

it seems easier just to delete using the tnxid and reinsert vs updating

my question is if I go

begin

INSERT INTO QBInvoicesQue(100s of feilds)

end

begin

delete from QBInvoices where txnid = @TxnID

end

and there is not matching txnid to delete from will it cause any problems? before going to the insert statement?

begin

INSERT INTO QBInvoices(100s of feilds)

Can't Update, Insert, Or Delete Rows
I have recently started an ASP.Net application and am having some issues updating, inserting and deleting rows. When I started working with it, I was getting errors because it could not find any update command. Eventually, I figured out how to automatically generate the commands, by configuring my SQLDataSource control and clicking the "advanced" button. Right now though, I have generated the commands, but I still can not insert, update or delete rows. When I attempt to update anything, I recieve an error that says "The data types text and nvarchar are incompatible in the equal to operator." Nowhere in my table do I have any rows that use the datatype "nvarchar", only "text" and "int". I tried switching all of my text columns to "nvarchar(500)", which did not help. I am led to believe that the auto generated SQL procedures are trying to do something behind the scenes that is making my database act up, because even when I delete rows, I get the same exception, so the datatypes cannot be messed up there, because all that the datasource is doing is deleting rows, therefore there is no need to worry about data types. I only get the error when I check the "Use optimistic concurrency" box. When I do not use optimistic concurrency, I can delete, insert, and update rows... but nothing happens. There are no errors, but nothing is deleted, updated or inserted either. Upon postback, nothing has changed. I may upload a copy of the exact exception page, if someone thinks that it may help. Here is the update command that was generated: UPDATE [Record Information] SET [Speed] = @Speed, [Recording Company] = @Recording_Company, [Year] = @Year, [Artist] = @Artist, [Side 1 Track Title] = @Side_1_Track_Title, [Side 1 Track Duration] = @Side_1_Track_Duration, [Side 2 Track Title] = @Side_2_Track_Title, [Side 2 Track Duration] = @Side_2_Track_Duration, [Sleeve Description] = @Sleeve_Description WHERE [Record Database ID] = @original_Record_Database_ID
Apparently no stored procedures exist for any of these operations, and I am unsure why. The "Record Database ID" is my identity column, and is the only field that is (and is supposed to be) uneditable.

Best Practices For Insert/Update/Delete

SPs also? the pros make SPs for everything? currently use dynamically generated SQL from SqlDataSources. for Update / delete. some delete are SPs too...

Update And Delete Rule - Cascade
Hi, I have a database which saves data about bus links. I want to provide a information to passenger about price of their journay. The price depends on three factors: starting busstop, ending busstop and type of ticket (full, part - for students and old people, ...).
So I created a table with three foreign key constraints (two for busstops and one for type).
When the busstop is deleted or type of ticket I want all data connected with it to be deleted automatically. I wanted to use cascade deleting.
But I receive a following exception: Introducing FOREIGN KEY constraint 'FK_TicketPrices_BusStops1' on table 'TicketPrices' may cause cycles or multiple cascade paths. Specify ON DELETE NO ACTION or ON UPDATE NO ACTION, or modify other FOREIGN KEY constraints.
How can I achieve my task? Why should it cause cycles or multiple cascade paths?

SQL: UPDATE, DELETE Current Record Only
Well, I really messed up. Instead of changing the name of a current company record in a table I changed ALL the company names in the table. Me.CustomerDataSource.SelectCommand = "UPDATE tbl_customers SET company = '" & companyTextBox.Text & "'"
So, I need to insert a WHERE clause to fix this. My problem is that I've been searching everywhere for this simple command structure and cannot find anything that specifically addresses a simple way to reference the current record.
I tried...Me.CustomerDataSource.SelectCommand = "UPDATE tbl_customers SET company = '" & companyTextBox.Text & "' WHERE recno = @recno"
But I get the error:
Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Must declare the scalar variable "@recno".
Can anyone provide this simple query clause?

Insert, Select, Update And Delete
I've got four pages with in the first page a insert, in the second a select, in the thirth a update and in the fourth a delete statement. First the values of a textbox will be inserted in the database, then the values will be shown in labels and than it is possible to edit or delete the values inserted. Every inserted item belonging to each other has one ID. The follwing values has a second ID etc.
How can I make that possible?? I think that I should pass the ID's between the pages so I'm sure that I edit or delete the values that I want. So insert value 1 in page 1, show with select value 1 in page 2, edit or delete value 1 in page 3 and 4.
Maybe I didn't explain it good enough for you, please tell me then!!
Thanks!!
