Visual Studio Database File And SQL Server Management Studio Express Question
I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason

Visual Studio 2005 Standard And SQL Server Management Studio?
I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features. I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio? I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional? I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool. How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase. Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology. My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn. Server Express, Management Studio Express, Visual Studio Standard, And An ASP.NET Page....
I believe I'm missing something as far as my configuration goes...I'm new to working with SQL server and the databinding I'm trying to do. I have an ASP.NET page that has a radio button list box which I have databound to a database served up by SQL Express I'm having a lot of problems with connections... I was going to enumerate the behavior under each configuration (local only, remote tcp/ip only, remote pipes only, remote both), but I've realized that it is just flaky. Sometimes I can connect to the db with SQL Studio express, sometimes not. Sometimes I can add new tables and edit tables, sometimes not. Sometimes I can create a new connection when trying to databind from within Visual Studio, and sometimes not (sometimes I can't even connect, other times, I can connect initially but when I build a query through the designer it then has problems). Lastly, sometimes the ASP.NET page works correctly and sometimes not. This all seems to be mostly independent of how I configure SQL Server as far as what kinds of connections are allowed. I thought there was a pattern, but as I tested it more rigorously I found there wasn't. What I would like to do is be connected to the same DB with Visual Studio and SQL Studio, edit the DB as I wish, databind to it, and test my ASP.NET page, all without needing to jump through a bunch of hoops (although right now I wouldn't even know what those hoops are...it's just a shot in the dark as to what will work). It's all quite maddening and any help would be appreciated.

SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???
When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data. Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing). When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server. Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine? Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic? The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

The develpment team where I work is using Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005 and Team Fundation Server. We want to somehow track changes of the stored procedures. We could create a Solution/Project in the SQL Server Management Studio, add all stored procedures to it and add that Solution/Project to the SourceSafe but nothing will stop developers from directly altering stored procedures. Any ideas on how to prevent developers from making changes to the stored procedures directly? Thanks.

I recently installed the Evaluation Edition of SQL Server 2005 x64 and it appears that MS Visual Studio 2005 is installed in stead of SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio. When I choose new project the only template available is "Blank Solution". How do I get all the templates (i.e. Analysis Server Project, Integration Services Project, Report Model Project, Report Server Wizard project, etc.)? Or would it be better to uninstall MS Visual Studio 2005 and attempt to reinstall BIDS?

Cannot Log Into SQL Server Database In Visual C# Express After Using SQL Server Management Studio Express
Is anyone else having the same annoying problem as me? ... I have a SQL Server Express edition database using Windows login authentication. Normally I can access it fine in C# Express, but If I have used SQL Server management Studio express in the same windows login session, i get: Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'mydomainmyuserid' If I restart my PC, I can then access the database in Visual C# express. I'm running Windows XP. Thanks!

OK ... so like thousands of others I am a Visual Studio Newbie. I want to learn, I want an ASP website, I have worked hard with Visual Web Developer, bought the books read the articles .... then bang walked into SQL ... ouch ... that did hurt !! Downloaded SQL Management Studio ... thought I had found the solution. Like all the Express products it looks great ......so what is the problem ? It is a simple problem and from looking at hundreds of other forum posts it seems I am not alone !! Nobody has provided a simple guide to the steps you need to take to get MDF's out of Visual Web Developer onto a Server. (in my case 2005) - ideally written by an expert who can avoid the temptation of wondering into 'techguruspeak'. I know nothing is straightforward - I accept that it may depend on your hosting setup - but when you are going round and round in circles just a few arrows showing the way out of the circle will stop you falling over (ouch ... not again !!) and start you on the pathway towards success. So can someone please explain the process of transferring databases from VWD through SQL Management Studio. All I want to do is get the site up .... make progress ... get motivated ....then I will come back and start tweaking !! So is there anyone out there who can write :A 'simple step by step guide for newbies' for moving VWD databases to SQL Server' in words us morals can understand ! i need a regex support in SQL 2005 server. i've downloaded SQL regex support project from http://msdn.microsoft.com/msdnmag/issues/07/02/SQLRegex/default.aspx?loc=en. but in order to enable regex support i needed to open VS 2005. compile the project and deploy it to SQL server. now i can use Regexp-s in SQL queries. However this is not elegant way to deploy everytime SQL Database project via Visual Studio to every MS SQL server i want. my question is : how can i deploy without using Visual Studio?

Hi I keep reading it's possible to add, amend ,etc. tables in visual studio but to do so I need access to the features that allow this. I can connect to the database but I haven't been able to use any of these database features since they are "blanked" out. Attaching Database In SQL Server Management Studio
I recently installed the express edition of sql server express, I installed with all the default options and choose windows authorisation for login. I have tried to attach a database in studio mangement and it threw an exception about security and connection error, I presume I have no priviledges, but I have tried to grant myself rights and basically tried everything but I cant seem to get anywhere with it, would apprechiate some advise on this subject, and what steps I should take to setup and use and have complete rights to the database thanks in advance Sean

How Do I Export My Database From SQL Server Management Studio Express
HiI am using SQL Server Management Studio Express to make my databases but I noticed if I make my database in Visual studios and go new Item and make a new database I see it in app_data folder and server express tab and if I make it in SQL Server Management Studio Express I only see it in the server explorer. So if I have to move my files to another computer how do I move my database easly with SQL Server Management Studio Express? Since when you make it with the visual studio the file gets stored with all the other files of your project so if you move it all to another computer you prob won't run into a problem. So how do I make it that so I can do everything in SQL Server Management Studio Express(since I like working in it) then export it into a file that I can then go into my app_data folder and add it is an exist item? How do I set up a database snapshot and backup the database for Windows Server Update Services 3.0, that uses the "desktop" version of SQL server on the same server running Widows Server 2003? There does not seem to be a "Management Plans" sub-folder under the "management" folder in the Management Studio Express console- so that's probably my first request- how do I establish a "Management Plans" subfolder, then how do I (step-by-step) set up a backup of the SUSDB?

Can't Attach Database Using SQL Server Management Studio Express
I am having a problem Attaching, well actually not being able to see a database when attempting to attach it. I suspect this is more of a security issue rather than a problem with Management Studio, but I can't figure out what is happening. If I copy a database to Documents and SettingsAll Users... and attempt to attach I can see the file in the selection tree. This also is the case if I copy it to Documents and SettingsDefault User... But if I copy it to Documents and SettingsADynarski... which is the account I normally log into, when I expand the folder in the selection tree, nothing is visible. And the same thing occurs if I copy the file to Documents and SettingsGuest... I've looked at the security settings and everything appears to be normal. Can't Attach SQL Server 05 Database To Visual Studio 05 Project Because VS Is Asking For SQL Express Components
We recently started the process of upgrading our development platform to Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 on our servers and SQL Devloper 2005 on our desktops. Yesterday I attempted to attach a SQL database I built to a test website project I have been building in VS. When I clicked the button to create the connection, I got this.... "Connections to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=49251" even though I can clearly see the reference to my database in the server explorer tab in VS. I initially installed the Express version that came with Visual Studio, but uninstalled it after I kept getting errors saying I couldn't create remote connections, even when I was only trying to connect to an instance I set up on my local workstation. I went back to SQL Server Developer 2005, because it worked in the past, and I was able to create and connect to my databases in my other projects. Can someone tell me what is causing this issue? It's become a showstopper, because I can't finish my project, and I'm not thrilled with the idea of my developers having this problem when we roll Visual Studio out. Thanks in advance....

Anyone Have Trouble Creating A Database Diagram In Server Management Studio ?
I try to do it and it tells me 'database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. To continue first use the files page of the database properties dialog box or the alter authorazation statement to set a valid log on then add the database diagram support objects" What is this support objects? I need to install something else ?

Repair Northwind Database In SQL Server Management Studio Express
Hi all, Long time ago, I downloaded the Northwind and pubs databases from the Microsoft website (I do not remember the details of it) and installed these two databases together into the SQL Server Management Studio Express of my PC (Microsoft Windows XP Pro). I tried to learn an example of using "User Instance" (source code was from a book) on the Northwind database located in my SQL Server Management Studio Express. I just find out that my Northwind database has the title only and no tables at all. If I click on the "+" in front of the "Northwind", I got the following error message: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express Failed to retrieve data for this request.(Microsoft SqlServer.Express.SmoEnum) Additional information: One or more files do not match the primary file of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupted and should be restored from backup. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 5173).. Please help and tell me how I can repair this Northwind database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express. Scott Chang P. S. Uploading Database To Sever With Sql Server Management Studio Express
Hello, I would like some help in uploading a database from my harddrive to a server using sql server management studio express. If I try to attach it to the server, this program only looks at the files on this server and not on my harddrive. So how can I copy a sql database to my folder on the server. Attaching A Stored Procedure To A Database In MS SQL Server Management Studio
Hello all! Quick question... I've created my DB in MSSQLSMS, then attempted to created a stored procedure for it. The code itself is fine, I just need to know how to actually attach it so that it appears in the "Stored Procedures" section of my Database. I have Right Clicked on Stored Procedures > New Stored Procedure... > Edited as required > Save When I attempt to save it, it prompts me for a file. That's fine, did that - but I can't see ANY way to actually attach this to the DB. Any help is appreciated! Daniel Davies

Problem Copying Database With Microsoft SQl Server Management Studio
I am trying to copy a database from the server on my web host(crystaltech) to my new local install of MS SQL Server 2005 Enterprise (trial version). I go to Tasks>Copy Database which opens the wizard. When I get to the select database screen I get this error: Server user 'username' is not a valid user in database '123foo' (123foo is the first database of all those on the server) I need have it look only at my database which I have permissions for to copy it. How do I do this? I tried copying the tables the other way(import data) but it dropped all my identities and primary keys which is a pain to recreate. Is there a way to copy tables from one server to another without losing primary keys and identity fields? Thanks for any help!

How does one export/copy a database using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express? At this time, I have an existing database that I can access and run queries against. However, I cannot connect to it via Visual Wed Developer 2005 Express. At this time, I'm getting the following error message with the existing database: Login failed for user 'bigide2_gims2'. Built Database With SQL Server Management Studio Express, How Can I Quikly Add Test Data?
I've built my SQL Server Express database with SQL Serevr Management Studio Express, and now I want to enter some seed data to assist in building tha app around it. I cannot find an option to manage the data in SQL SMSX, like I used to with Enterprise Manager. I don't want to have to write an app just to get test data in. Seems like this should be a common need. Am I missing something obvious here? Can't find any reference to this in a search of the forums. Please help.

Database In Visual Studio
When I try to create a database that will have fields for a date and a time the only data type option in visual studio is datetime. This stores data as dd/mm/yyyy-00.00. how can I set it to store either a date dd/mm/yyy or a time 00.00 but not both. As it is now I cant seem to store a time. Thanks jim

Cannot Add SQL Database In Visual Studio
I am working with VS version .0.50727 and .Net froamwork 2.0.50727. Database under Options is set to SQLEXPRESS. In SQL Server configuration Manager, SQLEXPRESS is running and has all except VIA enabled. When I try to add a new SQL data base to a project, I recieve the message 'Failed to generate a user instance of SL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will close. Can someone help me with setup between VS and SQL serve?

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio - Opening SQL-File From Explorer Does Not Connect Automaticly To Server/database
hello, I have a question about opening files in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. In the old Query Analyzer from SQL 2000 I can open SQL Files via drag & drop (from explorer to QA) or open it with a double click in the explorer. Then the Files opened, if I had actual a connection to a server / database (QA is stared with one file and has a connection to Server/Datebase), with this connection. Now in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio I'll be asked everytime for Server and have to get the database from the database list - it does not connect automaticly to server/database, that is actual connected (I have opened a file with the connection and a connected database in the object explorer). Someone do not have this problem - but we found no option to set it up. Any ideas? thanks & best regards, Christian Kiedels

Hi all, In my VB 2005 Express, I created a Windowds Form application "shcDataSet" that used 1 SqlConnection, 1 SqlDataSet and 3 SqlDataAdapters associated with the Northwind Database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express. The SqlConnection had "User Instance" in the following ConnectionString: Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataorthwnd.mdf";Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True. The 3 SqlDataAdapters were for the Northwind files "Customers", "Orders" and "Order Details" used in the SQLDataSet "AllOrders" with a AllOrders.xsd file. I ran the "shcDataSet" applicatyion and it worked fine. After the execution of "shcDataSet", I checked the Northwind database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express and clicked on "+" in front of Northwind database-I did not see any file showed up and I got the following error message: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.SmoEnum) Additional information: one or more files do not match the primary file of the database.
