MS SQL Server Express - Is Console Window Available?

Hello everybody,

MySQL has a WebServer console, that lets to create tables via easy to handle SQL queries. Since I am used to SQL Server console, I would like to have such window in Micosoft SQL Server Express coming with Visual Studio 2008. Despite I searched for it, I did not find a database console window.

Does MS SQL Server Express offer a Server Console that lets the database to be accessed via SQL queries, please?

Ok so I managed finally to get an Excel Spreadsheet to connect as a linked server.

When I right click it , go to run scripts and click on create to i can see the tab of script below:

EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @rmtsrvname=N'EXCELLINK',@useself=N'False',@locallogin=NULL,@rmtuser=NULL,@rmtpassword=NULL

GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_serveroption @server=N'EXCELLINK', @optname=N'collation compatible', @optvalue=N'false'

Now I am not sure exactly how to go about querying to pull the data into a table.

The table I want to set will have three columns:

CREATE TABLE new_price (
item_id CHAR(12),
item_lst_lnd_cost DECIMAL(9,2),
item_prc_2 DECIMAL(9,2))

the columns in the EXCELLINK linked server spreasdsheet are named the same as the columns above. Once the table is created how do I use the linked server to import the data?

SQL Server Express 2005 Managment Console Not Logging In
Hi all,

We have a machine with SQL Server 2005 Express installed and we use to have no problems connecting to this using the management studio using Windows Authentication. Since yesterday when we open the management studio and press connect using Windows authentication, the logon dialog remains active but does not disappear. In the backgroung I can see the name of the instance on the machine and after a few seconds it goes to green, to show its connected but I can't do anything without cancelling the logon. If I cancel the logon, it sets it is not connected to any server, if i try to launch the instance from the registered servers, with the green connected symbol it hangs.

I have left the logon dialog overnight (14 hours) and it still did not disappear. I am looking at any patches that may have been installed but none since the end of May...does anyone else have a similar problem?

Cannot Reset The Default Window Layout In SQL Server Management Studio Express
I have been having problems with SQL Server Management Studio Express, for SQL 2005.  The window layout is not right.  When I open a new query I can not see the query.  Every time I try to reset the default window layout (Window €“ Reset Window Layout), SQL Server Management Studio Express crashes.  When I reopen SQL Server Management Studio Express I still have the same problem of not seeing the right window (object explore,  summary and properties windows. And the new query in again hidden)
If I try to dock the windows SQL Server Management Studio Express close down only showing the one window that I am trying to dock.  I have tried to re-install SQL Server Management Studio Express but to no joy.

SQL Express And Console Application
I have created a Web application that uses a SQL Express file Database (mdf). I have also created a console application that looks to the (mdf) in the Web Directory to process some server-side tasks, (Email, process data, etc). Everything works well on my Development Machine, however when I Publish my Web App and Console application to a server, the Web App works fine, the Console App is buggy. The main error I get is ;that the user logged into the server cannot access the Database. (User domcholman cannot access). However this is not always the case, sometimes it works.
Question is, how does SQL Express authenticate credentials when in Windows Auth mode? Shouldn't it allow the Service account to access the database? Are there any best practices? Should I use an account and password instead? thanks...

error:  http://img95.imageshack.us/my.php?image=error28to.jpg
What do i need to do to be able to use the management console?
I was able to connect before but due to some bad advice think i stuffed up the whole thing and had to uninstall sql express and the management console.   I re-installed them both but am now getting this error.  what the heck is the deal with this?  It shouldnt be this hard!
This is in relation to an earlier issue i had trying to get to connect to a database from within visual web developer express and now i can connect to my sql express instance but cant get into the managment studio.  :(

How To Connect To Sql Server As Other's Window Login Rather Than User's Window Login Thorugh ASP.NET.
Dear members,

In MSDN, it says that it is recommended to use windows authentication to connect to SQL Server rather than use mixed authentication.

I create user deltasqluser on windows OS, and I specify in my webform ASP.NET script below :

protected System.Web.UI.WebControls.Label Label1;
        private string _connString = @"data source=deltasql2000;initial catalog=northwind;integrated security=false;user id=deltasqluser";
/*
comment : I login to my windows as deltakoronx, and I want to every user (including me), connected to sql server through IIS, will be identified as deltasqluser not as user's login (impersonate)
*/
        private void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
        {
            SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(_connString);
            SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand();
            cmd.Connection = conn;
            cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
            cmd.CommandText = "select suser_sname()";

            conn.Open();

            string userName = cmd.ExecuteScalar() as string;
            conn.Close();
            conn.Close();
            Label1.Text = userName;
        }

at web.config, I add :
<identity impersonate="false" userName="deltasqluser" password="" />

at IIS webApplication1's properties, tab "Directory Security", at "Authentication and access control" section, I checked "enable anonymous access" with user : DELTAIUSR_DELTA and checked "Integrated Windows Authentication",

at query analyzer, I login as "sa" and execute script below :
exec sp_grantdbaccess 'deltasqluser','northwind'

when I run the ASP.NET script, error at conn.Open(); with error message :
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.

What should I do so that IIS login to SQL Server as user deltasqluser not as "NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE" ?

Server Management Console Only??
Can the Server Management Studio Express be installed on a machine without SQL Server Express?

I have a machine that I use daily that I need to access a remote instance but there is not a need (or space) to fully install SQL Server onto the local machine - all I need is the management tool.

I tried installing it but the process errors out, saying a pre-requisite (MSXML6) isn't found. It refers me to a site with all the different SQL Server downloads.

All I need is the management tool on this machine. Is there a way to do it?

Tried loading "MOM" but it doesn't show up either

MS Console And SQL Server Enterprise Manager Settings Problem
Over the weekend we’ve been moved from an old domain to the new domain. My computer name changed and username changed as well since it’s preceded with the new domain name. So, I am using the new profile now, that is exact copy of the old profile.
I used to have a long list of SQL servers registered in MS SQL Enterprise Manager. When I login with the old name (profile) I still can see all these servers. I saved the console settings to a *.msc file.
When I login to the new domain and open console by clicking on the saved file I don’t see any of my registered servers.
Is there a way to transfer the console settings? Am I missing something?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SQL Server Enterprise Manager Closing Automatically From Console
This is the weirdest this I have ever seen in a long time. I have MS SQL Server running on a server and use Enterprise Manager a lot. Well, the damndest thing happens when I log onto the server from the console and run Enterprise Manager. If I go into Enterprise Manager, and go to a database and then select a table and right-click, and run the "Open Table" option; the entire Enterprise Manager application mysterously closes.

This only happens from the server console and through Remotely Anywhere...it does not happen when I log onto the server from Remote Desktop.

Has anyone ever seen this before? Does anyone know a fix for this?

Now when my app starts, it prompts for login/pw for SQL Server. I have checked my ODBC connection, and the login and pw are correct. I have also used Enterprise Mgr to check it in SQL Server. Does anyone have any thoughts on why it is now popping up? Drop me a line at bcarlson@documentsolutions.com, and I can answer any questions. Popup Window Does Not Show In Report Server
Hi, I am stuck and need help. My report accepts 4 parameters two are dates: from and to. Have to make sure that the dates are valid and to-date > from-date. Written the following function and have defined a hidden parameter to invoke it as:
    =CODE.CheckDates(Parameters!STARTDATE.Value, Parameters!STOPDATE.Value)

The problem: In development/preview, it seems to be working fine but not when deployed to server.
In there. when the cursor moves between the parameter fields, the browser seems to refresh itself and the function kicks-in and displays a system generated message (not my message and not a popup). It just does not show the popups.
I don't have control over the server and need to fix this issue.

The questions are:
    1. What makes the browser to refresh itself when only cursor moves from one parameter field to the other?
    2. Why the popup messages don't show up.

Thanks

Using User Defined Data Type (UDT) In A Sql Server 2005 Database + Window Application.
Hi,

I am using VS2005 C# + sql server 2005 Express edition.

I need to using a database that uses my own defined data types to define its tables columns.

I already have designed a Database projact and create the new UDT as follows:

Create a new Database project in the Visual C# language nodes.

Add a reference to the SQL Server 2005 database that will contain the UDT.

Add a User-Defined Type class.

Write code to implement the UDT.

Select Deploy from the Build menu.

Now I need to ask some quistions:

1- When I try to add a new query to a table that contains my new data type in its columns,if I try to exexute the query the next message appears:

'Execution of user code in the .Net framework is disabled. Enable "clr enabled" configuration option'.

How can I doing that??

2- I need to use that database - which has the new data type - in a traditional ' Visual C# Windows Application'  instead of 'Database', but:

when I try to add a new  Data Source that contains the tables that have the new data types in its definitions, the next message appears:

'<AyaDatabase.dbo.MyNewUDTTable>

User-defined types(UDTs)are not supported in the Dataset Designer.'

So, how can I resolve that problem??

please help me.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Aya.

SQL Server Agent Job Step Properties Window Loses Property Values Containing Semicolon (;)
Here's a weird one:

We are setting up a job for the SQL Server Agent via SSMS.  The Job Step Type is SSIS.

In the Job Step Properties window, on the Set values tab, you can enter Values to override your package variables - normally all well and good.

However in this particular case, the variable Value contains semicolons ( - it is a Connection String for an ODBC driver.  Eg: Driver={Client Access ODBC Driver (32-bit)};system=MYSERVER;...

The behaviour for this Value is weird:

If the Value is not surrounded with double quotes ("), the job fails with "The command line parameters are invalid."
If the Value is surrounded with double quotes ("), the job will run as intended.  The catch is: that entry and any subsequent "Set Values" entries disappear next time the Job Step Properties window is opened.

This looks like a bug with the parsing of those strings by the Job Step Properties window?

Or am I missing something?

Mike

New SSB-Management Console
Hi,

we are currently planning the development of a new SSB-Admin-Tool for SOA environments, which will allow dynamic configuration during MSBuild, register and monitor all services, dynamically configure routes (supporting gateway-servers and services registered on multiple servers for fail-safe).

I would like to know if MS is currently working on something similar (the Service-Listing-Manager is buggy, old and seems to be dead on GDN) and what the community thinks.

Isqlw.exe From A Console App
Can someone who knows a lot more about this than me please tell why, when the following code executes, I get a pop-up window telling me the usage of isqlw.exe?

<code>

strQueryCommandPath = "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn\";

strArguments = "-S(local)\SQLEXPRESS ";

strArguments += "-Usa ";

strArguments += "-Padminmlc ";

strArguments += "-i" + strCurrentDir + strFileName + " ";

myProcess.StartInfo.WorkingDirectory = strQueryCommandPath;

myProcess.StartInfo.FileName = "ISQLW.EXE";

myProcess.StartInfo.Arguments = strArguments;

myProcess.StartInfo.UseShellExecute = false;

return myProcess.Start();

</code>

I've also tried it with a space in between the - switch and also with quotes around the switch arguments.  I've put the entire path in just the StartInfo.FileName instead of switching the working directory as well.  I can't for the life of me get it to actually fire off this command for some reason.

p.s. I've also tried using "/"s instead of "-"s as well.

SQL Server 2005 Start Jobs Window And Job Activity Monitor Do Not Show Job Status Correcly
Hi,

We have development and user acceptance (UA) servers. When I start a job on the development server, on the management studio, Start Jobs window and Job activity windows indicate "Executing" until the end of the job and finish with "success" or "failure"

But on the UA server, second after I start a job, Start Jobs window comes up with "success" or failure" and Job activity monitor says "idle" but Job continues to log without any error message and updates the tables. So these two windows are not reliable at all. I have to add that I have only job operator rights on the UA server.

Does anybody know what the reason is ?

Thanks

I Need A Singe Example Using Console Utility
Hello,

I need to use the console and I never did that. I tried with the Book on line to make a little file .BAT using console /sservername /ppipe_name

Could cou give me a single example and try to explain how to complete line by line (in Sybase <expression> type info to console is enough !) a log file the users will read after in the Internet application.

Thanks
Axel
