Updating To SQL Server Management Studio Developer Edition Is Not Working

I got VS Pro which came with SQL Server Management Studio Developer Edition. Very exciting! However, when I go to update from SQL Server Management Studio Express to Dev Edition it says that there are tools / components already installed. I completely uninstalled everything having to do with SQL Server from my machine and tried again. It still says that the tools / components are installed. I see that there are still several instances of SQL Server still on my machine. So I tried reinstalling Express again. However, now the Configuration Manager has a snap-in that won't start. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

How Can I Install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition's Management Studio On A Desktop Machine?
I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Prof Edition on a Vista machine and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on a Windows 2000 server. They will be used as a development environment for us. As we need to management the SQL Server 2005, we would like to install the 2005 Developer SSMS on the Vista machine such that we can manage the SQL Server 2005 developer instance installed on that Win2k machine. However, the system does not allow us to do it. We have the express edition autoamtically installed while we installed the Vistual Studio. Is there any workaround that i can still install the 2005 developer SSMS without uninstall the sql server 2005 Xpress version? Or, I have to uninstall the Xpress version before i can install the 2005 developer's SSMS? Please help!

SQL 2008 Developer Edition Management Studio Does Not Work For Compact Edition 3.5 Databases

I am attempting to use the SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition (Management Studio) to create/manage a Compact Edition 3.5 database. My problem is that I cannot even create/open the compact database in Management Studio. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. TIA

Problem Creating the Compact Database:

Open 2008 Management Studio

From menu choose File | Connect Object Explorer...

Choose SQL Server Compact Edition as the Server type.

Choose <New Database...> as the Database file.

Browse to folder where file will be created (C:MyDatabase#1.sdf was used in my example)

Leave all other field as default selections OR make changes, either way it does not work.

Click OK.

At this point the OK button just becomes disabled and nothing happens.
Problem Opening An Existing Compact Database:

Open 2008 Management Studio

From menu choose File | Connect Object Explorer...

Choose SQL Server Compact Edition as the Server type.

Choose <Browse for more...> as the Database file and locate a ".sdf" file that I created using VS2008.

Enter password, if any.

Click OK.

SQL Server Management Studio don't see local SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition x64 on Vista Ultimate x64

Hi,
I have strange problem with SQL Server Management Studio on Vista Ultimate
x64. Nothing change after installing all newest service packs or hot fixes.
I have two running SQL servers on my local machine and all surrounding SQL
services running as well. I have turn on TCP/IP and Named pipes on both of
this servers. Actually I have reinstalled second server after first one
wasn't contactable in any way... After finished installation of second one
and after applying service packs I turn on SQL Server Management Studio and
still nothing in local servers pane when Browsing for servers to connect but
in network servers after few seconds I see one of my local servers (first one
installed) and one SQL Server 2000 on other machine (on this one I can't
connect because of time out error). Also when browsing for servers in Local
Servers I see my machine in Integration Services. Only difference between
this running services is that Integration service log on as Network Service
and all other SQL services log on as Local System account and on SQL Server
that is invisible I have also SQL Server Reporting Services running.
Services looks like this:

When I attempt to connect to a 3.5 database I get the following error:

"You are trying to access an older version of a SQL Server Compact Edition Database..."

I am using v3.5 beta 2.

If not, is there anything out there that provides a Query Analyzer like interface for viewing data that works with v3.5?

Thanks.

SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 Suddenly Stops Working?
Hello,

I am using SQL Server Express 2005 with VS2005.

Initially, I have installed SQL Server Express 2005 along with SQL Server Management Studio Express, and then as and when Service packs released I have installed all of them. My current version is SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 and SP2 Update.

I used this for about 15 days, then suddenly SQL Server Management Studio Stopped working! without any reason. When I try to run SSMSEE (Sql Server Management Studio Express Edition), hard disk light flickers for a while and then nothing.

To rectify this problem, I tried to repair the installation of SSMSEE through Add/Remove program, it went off successfully and now, SSMSEE ran perfectly, BUT, as soon as I restarted the computer and when I tried to run SSMSEE, same problem started again i.e. hard disk light flicker for a while and then nothing!

So, I uninstalled SQL Server Express Edition along with all its baggage, and reinstalled the same. Again SSMSEE ran perfectly until I restart the computer. As soon as I restart and try to run the SQL SERVER MANAGEMENT STUDIO, it wont run.

One more thing, only SSMSEE stops working , SQL Server is working perfectly.

I am at my wits end. I can't understand what to do? Has anybody encountered this probelm? please help me?

SQL Management Studio && Visual Web Developer
OK ... so like thousands of others I am a Visual Studio Newbie. I want to learn, I want an ASP website, I have worked hard with Visual Web Developer, bought the books read the articles .... then bang walked into SQL ... ouch ... that did hurt !!

Downloaded SQL Management Studio ... thought I had found the solution. Like all the Express products it looks great ......so what is the problem ? It is a simple problem and from looking at hundreds of other forum posts it seems I am not alone !!

Nobody has provided a simple guide to the steps you need to take to get MDF's out of Visual Web Developer onto a Server. (in my case 2005) - ideally written by an expert who can avoid the temptation of wondering into 'techguruspeak'.

I know nothing is straightforward - I accept that it may depend on your hosting setup - but when you are going round and round in circles just a few arrows showing the way out of the circle will stop you falling over (ouch ... not again !!) and start you on the pathway towards success.

So can someone please explain the process of transferring databases from VWD through SQL Management Studio. All I want to do is get the site up .... make progress ... get motivated ....then I will come back and start tweaking !!

So is there anyone out there who can write :A 'simple step by step guide for newbies' for moving VWD databases to SQL Server' in words us morals can understand !

No quesswork please ... let's have someone who can run SQL transfers from VWD while blindfolded ... at least that way we will have something in common !!

If you are that SQL 'superstar' who has used the Studio packages ... you have a unique opportunity to make 'thousands of people very happy' .... that can't happen every day !!

How Can I Access SQL Server Compact Edition With SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Hello,

I just installed SQL Server Compact Edition, since I am considering using it instead of SQL Server Express for a local database in my application. The documentation mentioned that I could use SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect to the Compact Edition and create and manipulate databases.

To try to connect, I run Management Studio and bring up the "Connect to Server" dialog. Unfortunately, the pull-down list of "Server name"s does not include the SQL Server Compact Edition server. I do not know how to type in the server name manually, so I cannot connect.

To install Compact Edition, I downloaded it and ran "SQLServerCE31-EN.msi". This installed, and I assume registered, a number of DLLs in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server Compact Editionv3.1".

Is there perhaps an additional step that I left out to complete the installation?

Might I need an upgrade to some other components? My Management Studio Version is:

     - Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.2047.00

I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Thank you,

WTW

Using SQL Server Management Studio Tools To Manage Dbs On SQL Server Express Edition
Hopefully a simple question: Is it possible to use Maintenance Plans created on SQL Server Management Studio (installed as part of an instance of SQL Server 2005 Standard Ed.) to back up databases running on an instance of SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services? I don't need directions, just whether or not it is permitted.

I've been able to create the plans including establishing connections to from SSMS to the the SQL Express instance, but they keep erroring out. I just need to know if this is actually permitted since Maintenance Plans are not available on Management Studio Express Edition.

Thank you in advance for your help.

SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???
When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?

The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Why Can't I See My Web Developer Express Database From SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Hi, I'm completely new to SQL Server and ASP.NET, so please bear with me on my learning curve! I've installed Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express (on the same PC). I then used Web Developer Express to successfully create a new database with a couple of tables in it. So far so good. I then installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the same PC and tried to connect to my new database. The connection to the SQL Server instance appears to work OK (using Windows Authentication) but I can't see the database I previously created. All I can see are the System Databases. Does anyone know what the solution might be?

The database is created without error, compacted, repaired, and so forth, with no change to the error. Do I need to install or reinstall something, and if so what? Thanks.

Connect From 2005 Developer Edition To 2000 Developer Edition
Hi, all -

I'm trying to register a developer's 2000 pc from my 2005 pc.

i'm not sure this is even something possible from Dev Edition to Dev Edition- I can register a 2000 server just fine.

I can ping him. Both our systems have remote access 'on'. His server is (local), i've tried connecting to it by just entering his machine name and by using just the ip address. The error I get is "timeout expired. The timeout elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."

Am I just not registering this properly? I entered just the ip address in the 'server' box. I am connecting as sa with the pw he gave me. When i connect to my server, I use the ip addressinstance. However, I am not sure what to use for the instance when all I see when I look at his machine is (local).

I haven't needed to do this before.

Suggestions?

Can I Use Sql Server 2005 Developer Edition With Windows Xp Home Edition SP2 For MCTS Exam 70-431 Preparation?
Hi
I am interested in taking MCTS exam 70-431 for sql server 2005 implementation and maintainance.
I have been reading the hardware requirements for the instalation of sql server versions and realise that enterprise and developer editions have same minimum requirements for the operation system.
I understand that the Developer Edition includes all the functionality of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, but it is licensed for use as a development and test system, not as a production server.

Also I undestand that the developer edition supports the Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 or later but the enterprise edition does not support this operating system. The evaluation/trial version is for the enterprise edition. Can I use the developer version of sql server 2005 for my practice exercises instead of using the trial version?
I have all hardware requirements for the trial enterprise version except that I am using Microsoft windows Xp home edition version 2002 with SP2. I am trying to see if I can use the developer version of sql server 2005 as it is cheaper for me to buy this software than buying the new operating system for my computer.
According to the microsoft book for the MCTS exam 70-431 there is a section which states that before you begin you should have Microsoft Windows Server 2003 running on your computer on an NTFS file system
(NTFS) partition. Will I still be ok to use the book and be able to do all the tests in the book if i am using the developer version of sql server 2005 with my Microsoft windows Xp home edition than using the trial version which comes with the book?

Thanks

If I choose not to install the Developer Edition (Im quite new to SQL) can I deploy a database I develop in the express edition on a regular SQL server?

Regards and thanks,

Matt

Visual Studio Database File And SQL Server Management Studio Express Question
I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason

SQL Server Management Express Studio Management Tools

I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

Visual Studio 2005 Standard And SQL Server Management Studio?
I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features.

I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio?

I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional?

I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool.

How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase.

Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology.

My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn.

Thanks

SQL Server Developer Edition
My employer recently purchased an MSDN subscription for each developer in our group. I sort of feel like a kid in toy store. I do not know what to play with first. Anyways. I have noticed there are several versions of SQL Server 2000. Enterprise, Personal and Developer. I undestand the difference between Enterprise and Personal Editions, but I do not know what make Developer different. Does any one know?

Thanks,

SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition. Any One Seen This
Everytime I open SQL Server Studio Management I recieve the below error. I've un-installed and reinstalled but it continues to come back. I cna continue on and it'll work kind of, but after a while it'll jsut crash on me normally when I'm trying to save a script or create a new DB. Sql Server 2000 is installed on the same machine so I'm wondering if I can have them both installed like this. Has any one seen this one?Bruce See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition
I am currently using MS Access for my site and am ready to move on.

I have obtained (legally) SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition.

Before I install this on my pc to learn this new tool and begin adjustments to my site, I have an important question, If I can phrase it correctly.

1. Will this set up my pc as a SQL server as well as keep the current configurations?
2. I have some projects I would like to keep using MS Access, how would this effect it?
3. I have never created a database using SQL or MySQL, any suggested tutorial links?

Thanks,

Zath

Windows XP And SQL Server Developer Edition
Hi Team,Is anyone else out there struggling with SQL Server on XP? Specifically, isthere anyone struggling with starting the Agent Service using theNT_AUTHORITY "security" role? I am having no end of grief.I started with a perfectly clean XP install. I performed an absolutelyclean, default install, and the installation hung. It appeared to freezewith the Agent startup. killed the install after 30 minutes of "freeze"time, and re-booted. The SQL Server Service started up no problem, but theAgent would not.I attempted to repair the installation, which seemed to work fine, but theAgent was still not working. I had used the "Local System Account" settingsto start the Agent, then tried a few different settings, all to no avail. Finally, I tried to apply some of the suggestions in the various newsgroups.I finally did get the Agent working, but now there are other problems.God! What a PAIN IN THE ASS! I can't believe this. I have given my life toBill, and his SQL Team apparently can't get XP and SQL Server to worktogether easily. It's such a pain.Bob

SQL Server Developer Edition Upgrade
Hi I currently have this edition of SQL server on my laptop:

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.2039 (Intel X86)
May 3 2005 23:18:38
Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation
Desktop Engine on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2)

It is running on SQL Server Management Studio 2005.

I wish to upgrdade to Developer Edition (as my laptop won't support Enterprise as it's running on Windows XP).

I have some questions, which I would be grateful if somebody could help answering:

1- will all my databases remain as they are?
2- Will I loose any functionality?
3- Will it upgrade or intstall a separate edition?
4- Can anybody recommend where to purchase Developer 2005 edition?
5- I currently have 2gb capped database limit on my version, will I get a no capped limit?
6- Will the 2gb Capped limit increase to uncapped once I install (i.e. can i use my previous 2gb database and add more data to above 2 gb)

The main issues are that I need an uncapped limit for my DB's and that I will keep my existing db's.

Many thanks!!!!!

SQL Server Express To SQL Developer Edition
I have Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite and have SQL Server Express installed from the initial setup. I would like to replace the Express edition with SQL Server 2005 Developer edition. I am currently developing for SQL 2000 and also have Enterprise Manager installed locally. Will the Developer edition install offer the option to unistall the Express edition (I don't need both installed)? Or do I need to uninstall Express manually and then install Developer. Also is there anything I have to be wary of in terms of making sure I am still able to debug SQL 2000 sprocs etc. in VS?

SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition
I am in the early stages of migrating an extensive Access 2003 application to C#/SQL Server. The client already has SQL Server 2005, whereas I am using SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition. It has worked fine for me, but I'd like to upgrade to SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and have a couple of questions.

In Access 2000 I am always using Query Analyzer and Enterprise Manager. Are these features available in 2005 Develper Edition?

Can more than one user connect to SQL Server at a time? That is, for testing concurrency, etc, can two people connect at the same time?

Is these any restriction on connecting to SQL Srever from another computer or workstation? Again for testing, one or two other workstations would be fine.

Finally, what is the street price? I've seen this advertised for $ 47 where I would have expected far more than that.

Many thanks
MIke Thomas
