Visual Studio Database File And SQL Server Management Studio Express Question
I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again.
Any suggestions?

I believe I'm missing something as far as my configuration goes...I'm new to working with SQL server and the databinding I'm trying to do. I have an ASP.NET page that has a radio button list box which I have databound to a database served up by SQL Express I'm having a lot of problems with connections... I was going to enumerate the behavior under each configuration (local only, remote tcp/ip only, remote pipes only, remote both), but I've realized that it is just flaky. Sometimes I can connect to the db with SQL Studio express, sometimes not. Sometimes I can add new tables and edit tables, sometimes not. Sometimes I can create a new connection when trying to databind from within Visual Studio, and sometimes not (sometimes I can't even connect, other times, I can connect initially but when I build a query through the designer it then has problems). Lastly, sometimes the ASP.NET page works correctly and sometimes not. This all seems to be mostly independent of how I configure SQL Server as far as what kinds of connections are allowed. I thought there was a pattern, but as I tested it more rigorously I found there wasn't. What I would like to do is be connected to the same DB with Visual Studio and SQL Studio, edit the DB as I wish, databind to it, and test my ASP.NET page, all without needing to jump through a bunch of hoops (although right now I wouldn't even know what those hoops are...it's just a shot in the dark as to what will work). It's all quite maddening and any help would be appreciated.

SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???
When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data. Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing). When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server. Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine? Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic? The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Cannot Log Into SQL Server Database In Visual C# Express After Using SQL Server Management Studio Express
Is anyone else having the same annoying problem as me? ... I have a SQL Server Express edition database using Windows login authentication. Normally I can access it fine in C# Express, but If I have used SQL Server management Studio express in the same windows login session, i get: Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'mydomainmyuserid' If I restart my PC, I can then access the database in Visual C# express. I'm running Windows XP. Thanks!

Visual Studio 2005 Standard And SQL Server Management Studio?
I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features. I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio? I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional? I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool. How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase. Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology. My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn. HiI had to recover my computer but before I did that I grabbed a new version of my mdf file but I don't know how to actually import it into SQL Server Management Studio Express evertime I try to open the file up it just crashes. SQL Server Management Studio Express Doesn't Recognize .mdf File
Hi, I just started working with Visual Web Devloper 2005 Express Developer and sql server 2005 Express Edition. My web is hosted with 1and1.com. They have informed me that I can't upload the database generated by the developer software and from what I understand, I will import those files into the mssqlserver database on my site. From my limited understanding, this is done from the backup file that is created from my local sql database. I didn't see a way to do that within VWD 2005 so I downloaded SQL Server Management Studio Express. When I opened it I chose the SQLServer (sqlExpress) located on my computer. The connection seems to work fine. However when I go to open a file and open the database that is in my web I get an error that states that there is no editor and to be sure the aplication for file type .mdf has been installed. I'm not sure where to go from here or if I'm even on the correct path. Thanks, Leesha

Hi, I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum. Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it. I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list. How Do I Export My Database From SQL Server Management Studio Express
HiI am using SQL Server Management Studio Express to make my databases but I noticed if I make my database in Visual studios and go new Item and make a new database I see it in app_data folder and server express tab and if I make it in SQL Server Management Studio Express I only see it in the server explorer. So if I have to move my files to another computer how do I move my database easly with SQL Server Management Studio Express? Since when you make it with the visual studio the file gets stored with all the other files of your project so if you move it all to another computer you prob won't run into a problem. So how do I make it that so I can do everything in SQL Server Management Studio Express(since I like working in it) then export it into a file that I can then go into my app_data folder and add it is an exist item? Database Snapshot In SQL Server Management Studio Express
How do I set up a database snapshot and backup the database for Windows Server Update Services 3.0, that uses the "desktop" version of SQL server on the same server running Widows Server 2003? There does not seem to be a "Management Plans" sub-folder under the "management" folder in the Management Studio Express console- so that's probably my first request- how do I establish a "Management Plans" subfolder, then how do I (step-by-step) set up a backup of the SUSDB?

Can't Attach Database Using SQL Server Management Studio Express
I am having a problem Attaching, well actually not being able to see a database when attempting to attach it. I suspect this is more of a security issue rather than a problem with Management Studio, but I can't figure out what is happening. If I copy a database to Documents and SettingsAll Users... and attempt to attach I can see the file in the selection tree. This also is the case if I copy it to Documents and SettingsDefault User... But if I copy it to Documents and SettingsADynarski... which is the account I normally log into, when I expand the folder in the selection tree, nothing is visible. And the same thing occurs if I copy the file to Documents and SettingsGuest... I've looked at the security settings and everything appears to be normal. This is on a box with XP Home and SQL Server Express. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? Thanks, Al

Why Can't I See My Web Developer Express Database From SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Hi, I'm completely new to SQL Server and ASP.NET, so please bear with me on my learning curve! I've installed Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express (on the same PC). I then used Web Developer Express to successfully create a new database with a couple of tables in it. So far so good. I then installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the same PC and tried to connect to my new database. The connection to the SQL Server instance appears to work OK (using Windows Authentication) but I can't see the database I previously created. All I can see are the System Databases. Does anyone know what the solution might be?

Can't Attach SQL Server 05 Database To Visual Studio 05 Project Because VS Is Asking For SQL Express Components
We recently started the process of upgrading our development platform to Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 on our servers and SQL Devloper 2005 on our desktops. Yesterday I attempted to attach a SQL database I built to a test website project I have been building in VS. When I clicked the button to create the connection, I got this.... "Connections to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=49251" even though I can clearly see the reference to my database in the server explorer tab in VS. I initially installed the Express version that came with Visual Studio, but uninstalled it after I kept getting errors saying I couldn't create remote connections, even when I was only trying to connect to an instance I set up on my local workstation. I went back to SQL Server Developer 2005, because it worked in the past, and I was able to create and connect to my databases in my other projects. Can someone tell me what is causing this issue? It's become a showstopper, because I can't finish my project, and I'm not thrilled with the idea of my developers having this problem when we roll Visual Studio out. Thanks in advance....

Hi all, Long time ago, I downloaded the Northwind and pubs databases from the Microsoft website (I do not remember the details of it) and installed these two databases together into the SQL Server Management Studio Express of my PC (Microsoft Windows XP Pro). I tried to learn an example of using "User Instance" (source code was from a book) on the Northwind database located in my SQL Server Management Studio Express. I just find out that my Northwind database has the title only and no tables at all. If I click on the "+" in front of the "Northwind", I got the following error message: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express Failed to retrieve data for this request.(Microsoft SqlServer.Express.SmoEnum) Additional information: One or more files do not match the primary file of the database. If I try to attach it to the server, this program only looks at the files on this server and not on my harddrive. So how can I copy a sql database to my folder on the server. .mdf File In Virtual Directory And Physical Folder, Which One Should I Attach To Sql Server Management Studio Express
I have a an asp.net application running under IIS. this application is using two folders, the virtual directory under C:Inetpubwwwroot and the application phisical folder at C:. I want to manage this applications .mdf database using microsoft sql server management studio express(iam running sql express with advanced services) which means i have to attach the database to Ms sql server managemet studio express tool. What i dont know is if i should attach the .mdf file in the physical folder's App_Data folder at C:myapplicationFolderApp_data or the .mdf file in the virtual directory under C:InetpubwwwrootMyapplicationFolderApp_Data I dont know which of the two i should attach. Where exactly is the running database, the .mdf file in the physical folder or the .mdf file in the virtual directory under wwwroot.

How does one export/copy a database using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express? At this time, I have an existing database that I can access and run queries against. However, I cannot connect to it via Visual Wed Developer 2005 Express. At this time, I'm getting the following error message with the existing database: Login failed for user 'bigide2_gims2'. Creating A SQL Server 2000 Compatible .BAK File From SQL Server Management Studio Express
Hi,My webhost (1and1) is running SQL Server 2000 and their web tool supports the import of .bak files. However, when I try to import my .bak files created in SQL Server Management Studio Express I get the following error:"The backed-up database has on-disk structure version 611. The server supports version 539 and cannot restore or upgrade this database. RESTORE FILELIST is terminating abnormally."I have Googled this error and learnt that 2005 .bak files are not compatible with 2000 .bak files. I'm just wondering if there are any work arounds to this or alternative tools that I can create 2000 compatible .bak files from from 2000/2005 .mdf files.Thanks in advance.

Built Database With SQL Server Management Studio Express, How Can I Quikly Add Test Data?
I've built my SQL Server Express database with SQL Serevr Management Studio Express, and now I want to enter some seed data to assist in building tha app around it. I cannot find an option to manage the data in SQL SMSX, like I used to with Enterprise Manager. I don't want to have to write an app just to get test data in. Seems like this should be a common need. Am I missing something obvious here? Can't find any reference to this in a search of the forums. Please help.

SQL Server Management Studio And Visual SourceSafe
The develpment team where I work is using Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005 and Team Fundation Server. We want to somehow track changes of the stored procedures. We could create a Solution/Project in the SQL Server Management Studio, add all stored procedures to it and add that Solution/Project to the SourceSafe but nothing will stop developers from directly altering stored procedures. Any ideas on how to prevent developers from making changes to the stored procedures directly? Thanks.

File Name In SQL 2005 Management Studio Express
Hi there, I am just starting to learn SQL 2005 Express. After opening the Management Studio Express, I right Click on the Databases node and create new database. then create a name etc. The problem is that when I click ok to create the new database, I get a warning saying that Input a filename. However when I click on filename (after filepath) it is greyed out and I cant add a filename. Does anyone know how to remedy this? Regards DML

After the execution of "shcDataSet", I checked the Northwind database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express and clicked on "+" in front of Northwind database-I did not see any file showed up and I got the following error message: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.SmoEnum) Additional information: one or more files do not match the primary file of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupted and should be restored from a backup. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:5173). If I executed the "shcDataSet" application again, I got a new error: SqlException was unhandled - Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'myPC##myName' ------->daCustomers.Fill(AllOrders11, "Customers"). I have 3 questions to ask: (1) How can I re-install the Northwind database in SQL Server Management Studio Express? (2) When I use the .Fill Method, do I have to tell the SQL Server Management Studio Express to load and/or unload the Northwind files "Customers", "Orders" and "Order Details"? AdventureWorks Database Not Seen By Management Studio Express CTP
When I install AdventureWorks.db for SQL Express, it runs without errors. The database files (data and logs) are in the SQL Express 2005 data directory. However, I can not see the database in Managment Studio Express CTP. I've tried repairing and uninstall/install again. Does not help. I have SQL Express 2005 cleanly installed. I have the pubs and Northwinds databases cleanly installed. (I was able to execute the queries that came for installing these). I can see both pubs and Northwinds in Management Studio Express CTP. Any suggestions?

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio - Opening SQL-File From Explorer Does Not Connect Automaticly To Server/database
hello, I have a question about opening files in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio. In the old Query Analyzer from SQL 2000 I can open SQL Files via drag & drop (from explorer to QA) or open it with a double click in the explorer. Then the Files opened, if I had actual a connection to a server / database (QA is stared with one file and has a connection to Server/Datebase), with this connection. Now in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio I'll be asked everytime for Server and have to get the database from the database list - it does not connect automaticly to server/database, that is actual connected (I have opened a file with the connection and a connected database in the object explorer). Someone do not have this problem - but we found no option to set it up. Any ideas? thanks & best regards, Christian Kiedels

MS Visual Studio 2005 Vs SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio
I recently installed the Evaluation Edition of SQL Server 2005 x64 and it appears that MS Visual Studio 2005 is installed in stead of SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio. When I choose new project the only template available is "Blank Solution". How do I get all the templates (i.e. Analysis Server Project, Integration Services Project, Report Model Project, Report Server Wizard project, etc.)? Or would it be better to uninstall MS Visual Studio 2005 and attempt to reinstall BIDS?

Management Studio Express Breaks Database Connectivity
Hi, I'm using SQL Express to run DotNetNuke on my own Windows 2003 server. DotNetNuke(DNN) copies a database on to the server from it's installation files and during the installtion process it fills the database with starter data. That process works fine. But the minute I attach to the database in SQL Server Management Studio Express (MSE), my web app loses connectivity to the database. When browsing to the default.aspx, I see the following message: Error Installing DotNetNuke Current Assembly Version: 04.03.05 ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider __________________________________________________________________ (don't be fooled by the error message, Dot Net Nuke was fully installed and working before I attached to it with Management Studio Express) Does anyone know the trick to getting the asp.net app talking to the database again? I'm using Windows Authentication. I have verified that Management Studio Express is what is messing up my connection. Any help is appreciated. I have already become aware that I must disconnect from the database (in Management Studio Express) for the web app to connect properly. I have already tried that. Same error. So far for me, it seems that simply attaching to the database with Management Studio Express breaks my database connectivity.

SQL Server Management Express Studio Management Tools
I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

Problem With Aspnetdb Database Created By Visual Studio For Express Edition
hi, problem with aspnetdb database created by Visual studio for Express edition i have sqlserver express set up on my machine and i am using the default AspNetSqlMembershipProvider provided by .Net 2.0. and my application uses forms authentication I started out with a CreateUserWizard. when i run my application aspnetdb.mdf is created in App_data folder and my CreateUserWizard says that the user has been added. View Data From A Compact Database With The Management Studio Express ?
Hi there, after some hours of installing and experiments i can now open and sql server compact database (sdf) iam also able to create a new database and add tables and columns. (everything with the ms sql server management studio express) i can also open the northwind database. but iam not able to view the data . if i rightclick on a normal database table i can choose ->open table and see its content. but on a compact table i have at rightclick only edit table properties delete refresh how can i see the data in the table or add new content ? thanks

How can I return the database "XYZ" from the DataBase Explorer of VB 2005 Express back to the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) safely? Please help and advise.
