Visual Studio 2005 Standard And SQL Server Management Studio?

I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features.

I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio?

I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional?

I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool.

How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase.

Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology.

My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn.

Thanks

Server Express, Management Studio Express, Visual Studio Standard, And An ASP.NET Page....
I believe I'm missing something as far as my configuration goes...I'm new to working with SQL server and the databinding I'm trying to do.

I have an ASP.NET page that has a radio button list box which I have databound to a database served up by SQL Express

I'm having a lot of problems with connections...

I was going to enumerate the behavior under each configuration (local only, remote tcp/ip only, remote pipes only, remote both), but I've realized that it is just flaky.  Sometimes I can connect to the db with SQL Studio express, sometimes not.  Sometimes I can add new tables and edit tables, sometimes not.  Sometimes I can create a new connection when trying to databind from within Visual Studio, and sometimes not (sometimes I can't even connect, other times, I can connect initially but when I build a query through the designer it then has problems).  Lastly, sometimes the ASP.NET page works correctly and sometimes not.

This all seems to be mostly independent of how I configure SQL Server as far as what kinds of connections are allowed.  I thought there was a pattern, but as I tested it more rigorously I found there wasn't.

What I would like to do is be connected to the same DB with Visual Studio and SQL Studio, edit the DB as I wish, databind to it, and test my ASP.NET page, all without needing to jump through a bunch of hoops (although right now I wouldn't even know what those hoops are...it's just a shot in the dark as to what will work).

It's all quite maddening and any help would be appreciated.

Visual Studio Database File And SQL Server Management Studio Express Question
I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project.  I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution.  However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program.  When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes.  I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again.   Any suggestions? ThanksJason

SQL Server 2005 Express And Visual Studio 2005 Standard
Hi everyone,I am trying to connect to SQL Server 2005 Express with Advanced Services from Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition.  I have SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition but it took up so much space and resources on my computer that I didn't want to put it back on there.  So I put the SQL Express on there and while the Management Studio application connects just fine, VS 2005 will not.  Oddly enough, VS 2005 connected just fine to SQL 2005 Standard.  I have enabled shared memory, named pipes and TCP/IP.  I have set up SQL Express to accept remote connections on named pipes and TCP/IP.  And I have tried running SQL Express as the Local System Account, as a Local Service and as a Network Service.  Nothing.  I have tried feeding the Server Name is the Data Connections dialog in Visual Studio my SQL Express instance as (local)/SQLEXPRESS, localhost/SQLEXPRESS, and {computername}/SQLEXPRESS where {computername} is the name of my local computer which SQL Express is (allegedly) running on.  And I cannot get the list of databases on that server. There is probably something very simple that I have left out.  Can anyone see what it is?Thanks!

MS Visual Studio 2005 Vs SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio
I recently installed the Evaluation Edition of SQL Server 2005 x64 and it appears that MS Visual Studio 2005 is installed in stead of SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio.  When I choose new project the only template available is "Blank Solution".  How do I get all the templates (i.e. Analysis Server Project, Integration Services Project, Report Model Project, Report Server Wizard project, etc.)?

Or would it be better to uninstall MS Visual Studio 2005 and attempt to reinstall BIDS?

SQL Server Management Studio And Visual SourceSafe
The develpment team where I work is using Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005 and Team Fundation Server. We want to somehow track changes of the stored procedures. We could create a Solution/Project in the SQL Server Management Studio, add all stored procedures to it and add that Solution/Project to the SourceSafe but nothing will stop developers from directly altering stored procedures.

Any ideas on how to prevent developers from making changes to the stored procedures directly?

Thanks.

Managing SQL Express Databases With Standard Version Of SQL Server Management Studio
I have a windows 2003 server which has SQL 2005 Express with advanced services installed on it. Then a few weeks back the company purchased SQL server Standard Edition which comes with SQL Server Management Studio (which has more features than SQL Server Management Studio Express currently installed on the server where sql express is running)I have been trying to schedule a maintanance plan on the SQLExpress Instance database from the SQL Server Management Studio that came with the standard version of sql but i have not been able to have all SQL Server Management Studio functionality available when connected to the SQLExpress instance. So is there a way i can connect to the Express Instance from management studio(that comes with the standard edition of sql) and have all its functions available when working with a SQL express database. Or i must upgrade the express database?

It was like a full installation since we already had installe the SP1, we had to uninstall it completely.
If we enter the following query:
SELECT  SERVERPROPERTY('productversion') as ProductVersion,
        SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel') as ProductLevel,

it shows that we have the Std Ed (not the Evaliation Ed.):

CREATE PROC sp_insertNewRecord @procPersonID int,

                                                       @procFirstName nvarchar(20),

                                                       @procLastName nvarchar(20),

GO

EXEC sp_insertNewRecord 7, 'Peter', 'Wang', '678 Old St', 'Detroit',

Now, I want to insert a new record into the dbo.Friends table of my shcDB by executing the following T-SQL and Visual Basic 2005 codes that are programmed in a VB2005 Express project "CallshcDBspWithAdoNet":
--Form1.vb--

Public Class Form1

Public Sub InsertNewFriend()

Dim connectionString As String = "Integrated Security-SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;" + _

Console.WriteLine("Row inserted: " + _

command.ExecuteNonQuery().ToString)

Catch ex As Exception

Console.WriteLine(ex.Message)

Throw

Finally

connection.Close()

I ran the above project in VB 2005 Express and I got the following 5 errors:

2. Method arguments must be enclosed in parentheses (in Line 16 of Form1.vb)
3. Name 'sd-insertNewRecord' is not declared. (in Line 16 of Form1.vb)
4.Comma, ')', or a valid expression continuation expected (in Line 16 of Form1.vb)

'Ellicott City', 'MD', '21045', 'CraigUtley@yahoo.com'  "in Line 16 of Form1.vb is grossly in error.

SQL Management Studio && Visual Web Developer
OK ... so like thousands of others I am a Visual Studio Newbie. I want to learn, I want an ASP website, I have worked hard with Visual Web Developer, bought the books read the articles .... then bang walked into SQL ... ouch ... that did hurt !!

Downloaded SQL Management Studio ... thought I had found the solution. Like all the Express products it looks great ......so what is the problem ?  It is a simple problem and from looking at hundreds of other forum posts it seems I am not alone !!

Nobody has provided a simple guide to the steps you need to take to get  MDF's out of Visual Web Developer onto a Server. (in my case 2005) - ideally written by an expert who can avoid the temptation of wondering into 'techguruspeak'.

I know nothing is straightforward - I accept that it may depend on your hosting setup - but when you are going round and round in circles just a few arrows showing the way out of the circle will stop you falling over (ouch ... not again !!) and start you on the pathway towards success.

So can someone please explain the process of transferring databases from VWD through SQL Management Studio. All I want to do is get the site up .... make progress ... get motivated ....then I will come back and start tweaking !!

So is there anyone out there who can write :A 'simple step by step guide for newbies' for moving VWD databases to SQL Server' in words us morals can understand !

No quesswork please ... let's have someone who can run SQL transfers from VWD while blindfolded ... at least that way we will have something in common !!

If you are that SQL 'superstar' who has used the Studio packages  ...  you have a unique opportunity to make 'thousands of people very happy' .... that can't happen every day !!

SQL Express Advanced Services Installed On SQL Standard With SQL Management Studio
We've seen two instances of situations where installing SQL Advanced Services SP2 onto a server which already has SQL Server Standard with Management Studio cause network connections to fail.  Uninstalling Express Management Studio restored the network connections.  I'm not talking about the connection to SQL, but the connection between the station and the server.

A big question is why the MSI that installs Management Studio doesn't check the environment to see what is already installed.

It seems like the SQL Express MSI, when installed in silent mode, is like a bull that just puts various components onto the computer.

We are dealing with an unsophisticated market and no matter what you tell them as far as not installing if they already have SQL installed, they don't read instructions.

Has anyone seen network connections go away after installing SQL Express on computers that already had some other version of SQL?

Thanks,

Pat

I've TCP/IP shared memory enabled which I read from another post. Nothing helps.

SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???
When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?

The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

SQL Server 2005 And Visual Studio @005 Connection Problem.
I installed the SQL Server 2005 Trial and am now having trouble connecting. When I bring up the ASP.NET Configuration tool and Go to "Provider configuration"  "Select a single provider for all site management data" AspNetSqlProvider  Test I get the following message.

"Could not establish a connection to the database.
If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider. "

I have already run the aspnet_regsql command-line utility.

Can anybody give me some information on how to set this up.

I am currently working with the club web site starter kit.

DB Connection From Visual Studio 2003 To Sql Server 2005
I have one computer running Visual Studio 2003, and another running SQL Server 2005.  I am trying (unsuccessfully) to add a connection to a sqlDataAdapter from an application in the Visual Studio 2003 computer to the db on the SQL 2005 machine.

If I go to the machine running sql 2005, where I am running visual Studio 2005, I can create this connection with no problems.

Is there a way fromvisual Studio 2003 to create a sqlDataAdapter with a connection to SQL 2005?

Can I Use MS SQL Server Express 2005 In Visual Studio 2003?

I have been experiencing troubles since I was decided to install SQL Server Expr 2005 in my PC, first I needed to remove the .NET framework 1.1 in my computer because it is suggested before installing sql server expr 2k5 that cause my vs.net 2003 to stop loading because sql express runs in .NET framework 2.0 and vs.net 2003 is in .Net Framework 1.1 then what I did is to install .Net Framework 1.1 in my PC together with .Net Framework 2.0 and my vs.net started runnning again.

My problem now is when I try to connect to a database using Data Link Properties in the Server Explorer it says "[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen](Connect()).]Sql server does not exist or access denied." how could this happen if I can see the sql server in the Server Explorer in my VS.net environment?

Please somebody help me I am just learning to this language and I think I cannot proceed to the next few chapters remaining because of this.

Thank you very much!

SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Can't Be Found
Sorry if someone already covered this, but I can't find anything about it.

I just installed (3 hours ago actually) SQL2005 Standard Edition (from the Launch event) on my machine, and i don't seem to have a shortcut to the SQL Server 2005 Management Studio anywhere.

I looked for a likely executable, but couldn't find it anywhere.  This wouldn't bother me as much if I could use Enterprise Manager from 2K, but SQL2005 will not allow it to register.

How do I get this going?  There are people here that want to inspect it's features, etc.  I haven't got anything to show them.

SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express
I am trying to install SQL Server Management Studio Express(SSMSE) on Windows XP SP2.
But installtion does not get completed. It goes unto last step in the installation and then rollback itself. At the lat screen it displayes the message that "SQL Server Management Studio Express installation could not be completed as it was intreupted". Though I did not do any thing? I tried at least 20 times but it ends up here.
I followed all the steps as defined in SQL Server Express setup on Microsoft site?

Any help would be appreciated.

Is there a forum or place to post such a bug, or someone to send full details to?  When it dies, it doesn't give me an option to send the information to MS.

Can't Connect To SQL Server 2005 In Visual Studio, Only SQLExpress Works?
Hi all,I'm having a big problem here. I can't seem to connect to a database of MSSQL Server 2005... Here is what I've did:1. Under the Server Explorer>Data Connections. Right click and choose "Add Connection..."2. Data Source was "Microsoft SQL Server Database File". Click OK.3. I browse to the database in the MSSQL.2/MSSQL/Data folder.4. Click on the "Advanced" button, and change the default DataSource from .SQLEXPRESS to .MSSQLSERVER. Click OK5.  Received this error:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default setting SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid) Only .SQEXPRESS that I was able to connect to... i've tried the solution from Microsoft, opened SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration and enabled "Local and remote connections", checked the option "Using both TCP/IP and named pipes" but it didn't help. This is frustrating because I can't get the Membership provider, login to work on my host. Please help. Thank you very much,Kenny.
