Referencing Previous Row In Normal Select Statement
Hi,

I was wondering if it is possible to reference a value in a previous row as a field in a normal select statement, for example:

SELECT a.user_id, a.name, b.user_id, b.name
FROM Users a
LEFT OUTER JOIN Users b
WHERE (b.user_id = a.user_id - 1)

Unfortunantly my user_id values are not in sequence so I get null entries using that code. Instead of doing something as basic as -1 is there another way to reference the previous row?

Need Gridview To Display Different Columns Based On New SELECT Statement
I have built an Advanced Search page which allows users to select which columns to return (via checkbox) and to enter search criteria for any of the selected columns (into textboxes). I build the SQL statement from the properties of the controls. Works great.
My problem is getting my gridview control to play nicely. At first I used a SqlDataReader and bound the gridview to it, thus giving me the ability to run new SQL statements through it (with different columns each time). Worked nicely. But, per Microsoft, sorting can only be done if the gridview is bound to a datasource control like the SqlDataSource. So I wrote the code to handle sorting. No big deal; worked nicely. But I could not adjust the column widths programmatically unless bound to a datasource control like the SqlDataSource. And could not figure out a work around.
So, I decided to use the SqlDataSource. Works great. Except, I cannot figure out how to run a new SELECT statement through the SQLDataSource and have the gridview respond accordingly. If I try to return anything other than the exact same columns defined declaratively in the html, it pukes. But I need to be able to return a new selection of columns each time. For example, first time through the user selects columns 1,2,3,4 – the gridview should show those 4 columns. The second time the user selects columns 2,5,7 – the gridview should those 3 columns (and ONLY those 3 columns). Plus support selection and sorting.
I am desperate on this. I've burned 2.5 days researching and testing.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Brad

GridView Based On SQLServerDataSource Using A Select Union Statement, Impacts On Update And Insert?
I have a GridView dispalying from a SQLServerDataSource that is using a SQL Select Union statement (like the following):

SELECT    FirstName,    LastNameFROM    MasterUNION ALLSELECT    FirstName,    LastNameFROM    CustomORDER BY    LastName,    FirstName
I am wondering how to create Update and Insert statements for this SQLServerDataSource since the select is actually driving from two different tables (Master and Custom).  Any ideas if or how this can be done?  Specifically, I want the Custom table to be editable, but not the Master table.  Any examples or ideas would be very much appreciated!

SQL Select Statement With A 'string' Variable?
I'm trying to add a 'change password' control to my site and seem to be having some issues.  I have code that works if I statically define what user is displayed on the form, but I cant get it to detect the 'authenticated' user and show them the reset for for that ID.If I take the "+ myid" out of the select statement and just define the username statically the form works properly.    Error:System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: The column prefix
'System.Security.Principal' does not match with a table name or alias name used
in the query. Here's a piece of the code that is supposed to detect the current logged in user.  However, it gives the error. (some of the code may be redundant but its not causing issues that I can tell)  public void InitPage()    {            IPrincipal p = HttpContext.Current.User;            String myid = HttpContext.Current.User.ToString();            SqlServer sqlServer = new SqlServer(Util.SqlConnectionString());            DataTable dt;            SqlConnection cnn = new SqlConnection(ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["myconnection"].ConnectionString);            SqlDataAdapter cmd1 = new SqlDataAdapter("select * from USER WHERE USER_NAME = "+ myid, cnn);            DataTable UIDtable = new DataTable();            cmd1.Fill(UIDtable);            User_Id.Value = UIDtable.Rows[0]["ID"].ToString();            dt = sqlServer.USER_SELECT(Util.SiteURL(Request.QueryString["Pg"].ToString()), User_Id.Value);

'combining' Values From A Select Statement Into A String
Hi,

I got a really simple question here. Say I have a table with

ID, Name
1,  A1
2,  A2
3,  A3
....
10, A10

Now I want to combine the names into another table grouped by their ID (say 1-5, 6-10), so this new table has two names instead of 10:
A1 A2 A3 A4 A5
A6 A7 A8 A9 A10

Is there a function that allows me to 'combine' the names from a select statement?

Thanks in advance,
Steven

How Do I Assign A String To A Parameter I'm Passing To A Select Statement?
Hello, I'm needing to pass a variable length number of values to a select statement so I can populate a result list with items related to all the checkboxlist items that were selected by the user.  for example, the user checks products x, y and z, then hits submit, and then they see a list of all the tests they need to run for each product. I found a UDF that parses a comma delimited string and puts the values into a table.  I learned how to do this here: http://codebetter.com/blogs/darrell.norton/archive/2003/07/01/361.aspx I have a checkboxlist that I'm generating the string from, so the string could look like this: "1,3,4,5,7" etc.I added the function mentioned in the URL above to my database, and if I understand right, I should be able to pass the table it creates into the select statement like so:
WHERE (OrderStatus IN ((select value from dbo.fn_Split(@StatusList,','))) OR @StatusList IS NULL) but now I don't know how to assign the string value to the parameter, say to '@solution_id'.my current select statement which was generated by Visual Studio 2005 looks like this: SELECT [test], [owner], [date] FROM [test_table] WHERE ([solution_ID] = @solution_ID) ...but this only pulls results for the first item checked in the checkboxlist.Does anyone know how this is done?  I'm sure it's simple, but I'm new to ASP .NET so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Problem With The SELECT Statement Of The Stored Procedure In String Comparison.

Hi all,I have created this simple Stored procedure. But it gives me wrong result when I  pass a parameter to it. But if I hard
code it, it gives me the right result.
The I check if the field value of 'Email' is exactly equal to  the parameter '@Email'.
The field 'Email' is varchar, and CID is integer.
CREATE PROCEDURE EmailExists @Email varcharASSELECT CIDFROM CustomersWHERE Customers.Email = @Emailreturn
Instead, if I check the value directly, it gives me correct answer. The the following code works fine when I typethe Email directly in the code.
CREATE PROCEDURE EmailExists @Email varcharASSELECT CIDFROM CustomersWHERE Customers.Email = 'tomyseba@yahoo.com'
return
Can anyone tell me the reason for it.
Thanking you in advance

Append Unicode String Source To Non-Unicode String Destination
In SQL 2000 DTS, I was able to append data from an ODBC source to a SQL 2000 destination table.  The destination table was created by copying an attached source table in Access to a new table, then upsizing it to SQL.  The character fields come over as varchar, and that seemed to be fine with the DTS job.

Now using the same source table and the same SQL destination, only in SQL 2005 with Integration Services instead of DTS, I get an error because the connection manager interprets the source text fields as Unicode and the destination fields are varchar.

I could script the table and change the text fields in the destination table to nvarchar, but this could have adverse affect on the application that uses the destination table.  Is there a way to make the connection manager see the source text fields as varchar, or have the integration package allow the append even though the destination is varchar and the source is nvarchar?

How To Append A Header Row In SELECT
Hi All,

When calling my SELECT statement, I would like to have Column name and Data type as the first record. Is this possible to do?
I would like to make a SP that would select all data from any table(with a header row) with just:

_sp_getData ' table_name'

I looked at sysobjects, and syscolumns tables, but was unable to put it all together. I have over 200+ tables, so creating variables for every column is very cumbersome.

Something like this:

select 0 AS SortCol ,
cast(min(case ordinal_position when 1 then column_name end) as varchar) as col1,
cast(min(case ordinal_position when 2 then column_name end) as varchar) as col2,
cast(min(case ordinal_position when 3 then column_name end) as varchar) as col3,
cast(min(case ordinal_position when 4 then column_name end) as varchar) as col4,
cast(min(case ordinal_position when 5 then column_name end) as varchar) as col5,
cast(min(case ordinal_position when 6 then column_name end) as varchar) as col6,
cast(min(case ordinal_position when 7 then column_name end) as varchar) as col7,
cast(min(case ordinal_position when 8 then column_name end) as varchar) as col8,
cast(min(case ordinal_position when 9 then column_name end) as varchar) as col9
from information_schema.columns where table_name = 'authors'
union all
select 1 , au_id, au_lname, au_fname, phone, address, city, state, zip,
cast(contract as varchar)
from authors

Is not an option.

Thank you very much in advance,

How Do You Place A Variable In Your Gridview Sql Statement?
I have the below select command in my gridview that uses a library name.table approach in the sql. I created a label on the page and want to pass the label in where i have the libarary1 text in the select statement. This will allow me to swap out the production library with my development library when im working on the site (thru the use of a site variable)
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:as400con %>"ProviderName="<%$ ConnectionStrings:as400con.ProviderName %>" SelectCommand="SELECT * from  library1.table WHERE COMPANY = ? and ack = ? and HORZN_DATE <= ?">
<selectparameters><asp:controlparameter name="company" controlid="accts" propertyname="SelectedValue"/><asp:controlparameter name="ack" controlid="podropdown" propertyname="SelectedValue"/><asp:controlparameter name="dt" controlid="htoday" propertyname="Text"/></selectparameters>
How would I insert a label.text value into the select statement replacing the library1 ? I tried to use the asp:controlparameter adding the text and placing a ? mark in place of the library1 but it failed.
Thanks for any help you can lend on this,

ComboBox Bounded Components
Hi,

I develop a application for mobile devices using C# and Visual Studio 2005 with .NET Compact Framework 2.0. My application is very sample: have a master form where user browse the records in a grid and a detail form for insert and alter the record's.

The application runs fine when the database is empty. I have a problem with combobox bounded components when the sequence above is executed:

1. After append a some of records end the application;
2. Run the application again (the records was in database);
3. Append new record;
4. Cancel the operation;

The first record of the group is changed without user confirmation. The value of each field is changed for the first value of combobox bounded with then.

Why?

The code below cause the problem:

TableBindingSource.AddNew();

DetailEditViewDialog detailEditViewDialog = DetailEditViewDialog.Instance(TableBindingSource));

detailEditViewDialog.Text = "[New]";

detailEditViewDialog.comboBoxCars.SelectedIndex = -1;

detailEditViewDialog.comboBoxPumps.SelectedIndex = -1;

detailEditViewDialog.comboBoxLines.SelectedIndex = -1;

detailEditViewDialog.ShowDialog();

Somebody can help me?

Two Multi-value Parameters That Are Bounded To Dynamic Datasets (using Vbscript.)

I have a report with a multi-value parameter that gets its values (value and label fields) from a dataset that is built at runtime (from vbscript code that returns a string).
When I press 'preview' all works fine.
When I add another multi-value parameter that (like the first parameter) gets its value from a dataset that is built at runtime (from vbscript code that returns a string) and press 'preview', I get a strange behavior:
The second parameter is disabled until I choose an option for the first parameter.
I do not pass value from the first parameter to the second and the two variables have 'Null' in the default values and 'from query' in the available values.

Why does the second parameter is disabled and how can I avoid it?
Thanks in advance.

Want Error Message To Appear When No Database Results Were Returned In GridView, Also Other GridView Issues.
Hi, I am seeking a hopefully easy solution to spit back an error message when a user receives no results from a SQL server db with no results. My code looks like this What is in bold is the relevant subroutine for this problem I'm having.   Partial Class collegedb_Default Inherits System.Web.UI.Page Protected Sub submit_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles submit.Click SqlDataSource1.SelectCommand = "SELECT * FROM [college_db] WHERE [name] like '%" & textbox1.Text & "%'" SqlDataSource1.DataBind() If (SqlDataSource1 = System.DBNull) Then no_match.Text = "Your search returned no results, try looking manually." End If End Sub Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load SqlDataSource1.SelectCommand = "SELECT * FROM [college_db] ORDER BY [name]" SqlDataSource1.DataBind() End Sub Protected Sub reset_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles reset.Click SqlDataSource1.SelectCommand = "SELECT * FROM [college_db] ORDER BY [name]" SqlDataSource1.DataBind() End SubEnd Class  I'm probably doing this completely wrong, I'm a .net newb. Any help would be appreciated. Basically I have GridView spitting out info from a db upon Page Load, but i also have a search bar above that. The search function works, but when it returns nothing, I want an error message to be displayed. I have a label setup called "no_match" but I'm getting compiler errors. Also, next to the submit button, I also have another button (Protected sub reset) that I was hoping to be able to return all results back on the page, similar to if a user is just loading the page fresh. I'd think that my logic would be OK, by just repeating the source code from page_load, but that doens't work.The button just does nothing. One final question, unrelated. After I set this default.aspx page up, sorting by number on the bottom of gridview, ie. 1,2,3,4, etc, worked fine. But now that paging feature, as long with the sorting headers, don't work! I do notice on the status bar in the browser, that I receive an error that says, "error on page...and it referers to javascript:_doPostBack('GridView1, etc etc)...I have no clue why this happened. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Multiple Tables Used In Select Statement Makes My Update Statement Not Work?
I am currently having this problem with gridview and detailview. When I drag either onto the page and set my select statement to pick from one table and then update that data through the gridview (lets say), the update works perfectly.  My problem is that the table I am pulling data from is mainly foreign keys.  So in order to hide the number values of the foreign keys, I select the string value columns from the tables that contain the primary keys.  I then use INNER JOIN in my SELECT so that I only get the data that pertains to the user I am looking to list and edit.  I run the "test query" and everything I need shows up as I want it.  I then go back to the gridview and change the fields which are foreign keys to templates.  When I edit the templates I bind the field that contains the string value of the given foreign key to the template.  This works great, because now the user will see string representation instead of the ID numbers that coinside with the string value.  So I run my webpage and everything show up as I want it to, all the data is correct and I get no errors.  I then click edit (as I have checked the "enable editing" box) and the gridview changes to edit mode.  I make my changes and then select "update."  When the page refreshes, and the gridview returns, the data is not updated and the original data is shown. I am sorry for so much typing, but I want to be as clear as possible with what I am doing.  The only thing I can see being the issue is that when I setup my SELECT and FROM to contain fields from multiple tables, the UPDATE then does not work.  When I remove all of my JOIN's and go back to foreign keys and one table the update works again.  Below is what I have for my SQL statements:------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SELECT:SELECT People.FirstName, People.LastName, People.FullName, People.PropertyID, People.InviteTypeID, People.RSVP, People.Wheelchair, Property.[House/Day Hab], InviteType.InviteTypeName FROM (InviteType INNER JOIN (Property INNER JOIN People ON Property.PropertyID = People.PropertyID) ON InviteType.InviteTypeID = People.InviteTypeID) WHERE (People.PersonID = ?)UPDATE:UPDATE [People] SET [FirstName] = ?, [LastName] = ?, [FullName] = ?, [PropertyID] = ?, [InviteTypeID] = ?, [RSVP] = ?, [Wheelchair] = ? WHERE [PersonID] = ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The only fields I want to update are in [People].  My WHERE is based on a control that I use to select a person from a drop down list.  If I run the test query for the update while setting up my data source the query will update the record in the database.  It is when I try to make the update from the gridview that the data is not changed.  If anything is not clear please let me know and I will clarify as much as I can.  This is my first project using ASP and working with databases so I am completely learning as I go.  I took some database courses in college but I have never interacted with them with a web based front end.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.Thank you in advance for any time, help, and/or advice you can give.Brian

Help With Delete Statement/converting This Select Statement.
I have 3 tables, with this relation:
tblChats.WebsiteID = tblWebsite.ID
tblWebsite.AccountID = tblAccount.ID

I need to delete rows within tblChats where tblChats.StartTime - GETDATE() < 180 and where they are apart of @AccountID.  I have this select statement that works fine, but I am having trouble converting it to a delete statement:

SELECT * FROM tblChats c
LEFT JOIN tblWebsites sites ON sites.ID = c.WebsiteID
LEFT JOIN tblAccounts accounts on accounts.ID = sites.AccountID
WHERE accounts.ID = 16 AND GETDATE() - c.StartTime > 180

Go Not Work Within A Line String Of Sql Statement?...
Hi:

the following is my TSQL command of a job(after passing databaseName, I don't want multiple steps, just with 1 step)
--===================================
BACKUP DATABASE ABC To Backup_ABC_1 with init, name = 'Backup of 1(M, W, F ) Job_ABC_1Mon' go backup log ABC with truncate_only go print 'shrinkdatabase begin-- ' dbcc checkdb(ABC) go dbcc shrinkdatabase(ABC, 10)

Issue: with 3 'go' inside the whole line, execution failed. after replace 'go' with 'begin' and 'end' for each sql statemet, the execution works. Someone could explain why 'go' as a batch does not work in this situation?

also, is this a good practice to
1. truncate_only
2. dbcc checkdb
3. shrinkdatabase
after a daily backup?

thanks
David

Sql Statement Comma Separated String
I have a table called evidence, which has the following Fields

| evidence_id | Description| Standards|
E001 blagh 1.1,1.2,1.3

Ok I am trying to search the comma-separated string in the standards field using the like clause so I can display the evidence_id.

SQL looks like

SELECT Evidence.Standards, *
FROM Evidence
WHERE (((Evidence.Standards) Like '%1.1%'));

However it will not search through the list and select for example if I change 1.1 to 1.2. The commas wont allow it.

It works if I just have one item in the list that is just 1.1. Can anyone help me to search a comma-separated string for a certain string?

Thanks
