2 Instance Accessing Same Physical Db File In A/A Cluster

hi,
I have 2 nodes, both active in windows 2003 cluster. both nodes have sql 2005 installations (master db & bin in local drives) with same instance name.
Now my production db physical files are on a shared disk.
I attached these files to my sql 2005 instance from node 1. then i took this node offline & attached same physical files from node 2.
Now when the failback happens, i get an inconsistency error from my client app.
can anyone help me achieve this ?? 2 nodes accessing same mdf file but only one at a time. Is there any architectural issue which wud prevent me from achieveing the ACID properties ?
its ok if i have to manually run some batch file to trigger instance on/off.

sql clustering/db mirroring/ replication is the last option for me.

thanks in advance

I wanted to verify what option are available for a SQL Server 2005 server with 8 GB of RAM.

Assuming I would not need to use more than 2 GB for any instance of SQL Server.

Are the following options correct?

Option 1

Windows 2003 R2 32-bit Enterpise Edition Server with AWE enabled

Default Instance SQL Server 2005 32-bit Standard Edition AWE not enabled

Named Instance 1 SQL Server 2005 32-bit Standard Edition AWE not enabled

Named Instance 2 SQL Server 2005 32-bit Standard Edition AWE not enabled

Option 2

Windows 2003 R2 64-bit Standard Edition Server

Default Instance SQL Server 2005 32-bit Standard Edition AWE not enabled

Named Instance 1 SQL Server 2005 32-bit Standard Edition AWE not enabled

Cannot Attach Mdf: Create File Encountered Operating System Error 5 While Attempting To Open The Physical File...
I have used the copy database wizard, but I realized I had forgotten to shrink the transaction log file. So I canceled the wizard. My database, detached by the wizard, has now disappeared. The mdf file is still there, but when I try to attach it manually I get the "create file encountered operating system error 5 while attempting to open the physical file..." error.

Any way I can recover it?

Thanks.

Unable To Open The Physical Mdf File Or Log File Because It Is Being Used By Another Process

Unable to open the physical mdf file or log file because it is being used by another process

I am trying to write a Windows Application using ASP.NET 2.0, C#2005 EXPRESS, and SQL 2005 EXPRESS.

I had followed the introductory video to create a connection to the Database using Windows Authentication, and use the wizard to create a dataset and checking all the tables in the database.

After that I dragged a table from the data source created from the above process. The Details Grid so created is able to perform update, delete and addition of records.

But when I went back to the database at my PC I wasn€™t able to connect to the database. And if I opened the database first and then load the windows application and perform some database operations and went back to the physical database I wasn€™t able to open the tables in the database.

The error message is that the physical database connection cannot open the .mdf file or log file because another process is using the database. I guess it refers to the Windows Application.

Is this normal? Will it have any implications after the application is deployed? I suppose that there isn€™t a scenario where a Windows application and a physical process will access the database at the same time.

Will appreciate some feedback and advice on this scenario and whether it is a problem.

Thanks and regards

Problem Accessing MSDB In A Cluster
I'm new to sql clusters, but i've been asked to set up an SSIS job on a cluster. My wish is to import the dtsx package to MSDB, not to "File System". This works fine in my non clustered test environment, but on the cluster, I can't expand the MSDB node. When I try, I get a pretty long error message, I don't have it here right now, but i says something about that the reason could be the lack of a default instance on the sql server.

I'm not the one who set up the cluster and to be honest, I don't know how default instances works in a clustered environment.

Does anyone recognize the problem?

A related question. Should I connect to "the cluster" or to the node with SSIS installed when I upload the dtsx package? I'm able to connect to both, but can't expand the MSDB "folder" on any of them.

Probelm Accessing Sql Instance
Hi , I just put my files up on a web server. I can view my aspx pages..but when I try to login to the website I get the following;
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
Can you help? I can understand that it cannot find the specified instance of sql server, however I don't remember ever configuring it look to at a specific sql server. When i created the site in web dev express edition and added the login controls and set the asp config tool to use internet security it created the database itself and so I didn't have to put a connection string in. I also cannot see a connection string in tthe web.config file.
The aspnetdb.mdf file is there on the server. is this something i need to configure with the hosting company or do i set it in my webconfig file.

Accessing SQL2005 As A Second Instance To SQL2000
I'm having trouble accessing SQL2005 Standard Edition as a secondinstance of SQL Server where the first instance is SQL 2000 EnterpriseEdition. I installed SQL 2005 as a named instance "SQL2005". Theserver is running Windows 2000 SP4 ON A 32-Bit machine. When I look inServices I see the SQL Server (SQL2005), SQL Server Agent (SQL2005)services there. I went into SQL Server Configuration manager anddisabled the named pipes protocol and only have TCP/IP and by defaultShared Memory enabled to rule out that named pipes is causing theproblem. In SQL Server Configuration Manager I created an alias"computername$SQL2005" and was able to connect to database engine"computernameSQL2005" through SQL Server Management Studio WHILE ONTHAT BOX.But when trying to access the 2005 instance from another server(64-bit Windows 2003 SP1) I'm having trouble. On the 64-bit machine Idisabled the named pipes protocol for both "SQL Native ClientConfiguration (32-bit)" and "SQL Native Client Configuration". Under32-bit I created the alias "machinename$SQL2005" to point to the IPaddress of the 32-bit machine. In SQL Server Management Studio whentrying to connect to the database engine "machinename$SQL2005" itdefaults to the SQL 2000 instance. How do I access the SQL2005instance from a remote server?Any help would be appreciated.Mike

Are Duplicate Instance Names A Problem If Physical Server Names Are Different?
If I restore the master database from ServerA to ServerB and start the SQL Server services on ServerA and ServerB, the master databases will be identical and running sp_helpserver and @@ServerName will indicate the SQL Server instance for both instances is ServerA. Is this ok considering the physical server names are different?

If this is ok, how does SQL Server advertise on the network who it is? Does it append the physical server name to the SQL Server instance name during network communications?

Cluster: Instance Naming
Hi all

SQL Server 2005 cluster. Active-Active. We want to create two instances. The two nodes are named:

mike-940-01
mike-940-02

I read somewhere that there can only be ONE default instance in a 2005 cluster. So I interpret that as meaning that I can only have one instance named after a virtual server (example: mike-940-03) and the other instance has to be a slashed instance (example: mike-940-03/instance1). But what if I create another virtual server (example: mike-940-04). Can I install a default instance in that server? Can someone help me clarify this?

Also, if I'm using all slashed instance names, then what does it choose as the base name before the slash? In other words, what decides which virtual server name is used? Is it the management node? Is it one of the nodes?

My objective is to keep consistency in the naming on the cluster. If I have to use slashed instances, then I want all sql server instances to have a slash.

Sorry about the confusing explanation, but that's probably a symptom of MY confusion.

Thanks!

Multiple Instance Cluster
Hi There

If i have a 2 node cluster running a single instance (default) and i want to add another instance to the cluster , can i install the second instance as a defualt instance ?

Since the cluster instances are referred to their virtual names/ip's and if i choose to intall the binaries of the second instance to a different location is this possible?

Since in theory you never have 2 default instances running on a single server but each within a virtual server?

Normally i install a named instance but do i have to ?

Unable To Open The Physical File.....
Hi, i'm trying to interface a c# application with an sql database created with Visual Web Developer Express.
I have published the site (and the db) on iis 5 (xp pro).
Everithing goes fine on accessing the database from internet, but when i try to connect the db while it's opened with my c# program i keep an error in the sqlconnection open command:
Unable to open the physical file "C:myApp_Datamydb.mdf". Operating system error 32: "32(The file is in use by another process.)".
My connection string from webconfig:
<add name="MYDBCS" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;Database="C:myApp_Datamydb.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
.....and the connection string for the c# program:
"Data Source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Database=c:myapp_datamydb.mdf;Integrated Security=False;Connect Timeout=30;User ID=abc;Password=abc;Trusted_Connection=False;";
I have used a user to connect the database because there was a conflict trying to open the db with Integrated Security=True.

Does anyone have an idea where is the error?

Actual Physical File Size
Hi Everybody,
I like to compute the actual physical database file size using queries.

From the EM database properties, the file size shown is not matching with the master..sysaltfiles.size

Ex. Actual file size is 12MB and 1MB for MDF & LDF respectively.
'sysaltfiles' shows 1464 & 96 resp. Since they are shoing it as 8K Pages,
96*8 = 768KB is not matching with 1024KB for the LDF file.
Is there any overheads (additional space from the physical file for file headers) allocated?

Thanks

Multiple Backslashes In Physical File Name
Accidentally, I've managed to have this as part of a Create Database:

... FILENAME = N'C:MSSQLData\ estdb_Log.LDF' ...

, notice the triple backslash. The Create Database statement works fine,
and sp_helpdb says the log file name is:

C:MSSQLData\ estdb_Log.LDF

I noticed the MSDOS command prompt also allows multiple backslashes,
they're reduced to one when performing the command and I guess
SQL Server does the same thing, so no problem so far really.

But is it supposed to work this way? Quite confusing, isn't it?

Unable To Open Physical File ...
Using SQL Server 2005 Express SP2.

Scenario : I have VC++ 2005 Express IDE open and use the database explorer to browse tables in a database. Then I open SQL Server Managament Studio Express and try to browse the same database. I get "Unable to open the physical file ... The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process".

What is this "other process" that is trying to open the file? I thought the whole point of a database server was that clients talk to the server, and the server accesses the physical file. So only one process should be accessing the file. Do VC++ IDE and SSMSE work directly with the physical file, or do they channel their requests, etc. through the server.

Or is it something completly different?

Thanks,

Move Log File To Another Physical Disk
Hi everyone,

Due to running out of disk space and reducing I/O contention, I plan to seperate data files and log files to different disk arrays.

My plan is to
- detach all databases
- copy log files to another disk
- attach all databases

The total size of log files is about 60GB. It becomes a problem becasue it spend too much time passing files. To reduce down time, is there any way I can do?

Can I just create new log files and remove the current files by using sql management studio?

any other suggestions? Thanks in advance

Upgrading A Instance To SP1 On Cluster, Already Running SP2
Hi,

i have a SQL Server 2005 cluster with 3 instances(virtual servers). They have all been upgraded to SP2.

Now i want to install a fourth instance, but i want it to run on SP1.

I was under the impression that each instance could be on its own sp level, but the SP1 program will not upgrade my fourth instance, because some components have already been upgraded.

Does anyone know that its impossible to have a SP1 instance when SP2 already has been deployed in the cluster/other instances?

Help - Error: Unable To Open The Physical File
Hi, I've just finished creating my first ASP.NET website. I created it on my laptop and it works perfectly, but I'm having some problems deploying it to my web server (PC).The site works ok, but when I try to log in to my client area, I get this error:
"Unable to open the physical file "c:inetpubwwwrootONeillStrataApp_Dataaspnetdb.mdf". Operating system error 5: "5(Access is denied.)".An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file c:inetpubwwwrootONeillStrataApp_Dataaspnetdb.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share."
I've searched far and wide for a solution and have read many articles, but none seem to be able to fix my problem. I've tried using that SEUtil tool, but that didn't work, I've made sure the App_Data directory on the web server isn't read only (the read-only checkbox isn't ticked, but it DOES have that little green square which I can't get rid of), I've assigned the ASPNET user as a db owner and that didn't work and I've manually attached the database to the web server's instance of SQL Express 2005.When I launch the solution in VS2005 on the web server, I can browse through the database and see the tables and data etc, but when I try to run the application, I get that message above...
Surely it shouldn't be this hard to get it going?Any help would be massively appreciated.

SQL 2005 Multi-Instance Cluster Question

I understand most of the concepts for the Active/active setup. I am setting up a 2 node cluster. My question is can I use the default instance name (one default instance name per group) when setting up each instance or do I have to use named instances . I am assuming that since each group is a virtual machine that I can get away with using the default instance, but I cant find any documentation to confirm my frequently wrong perceptions.

I want to set it up like this

Instance1 Group

Group resources
Default SQL Instance Name Installation
Preferred Owner Node1

Instance2 Group

Group resources
Default SQL Instance Name Installation
Preferred Owner Node2

Unable To Open The Physical File. Operating Error
Hi.. !!

I am working in a C# database application quick test where I basically use two types of access to an SQL Server Express database.
In the first part of the code, I use the traditional connection declaring a SqlConnection. When I just use only this kind of connection I do not have any problem. The issue starts when I access to the same database using Data Bindigs at the same time. When I start the application I got and error as soon as the instruction goes to open the data base connection.
The reported error is "Unable to open the physical file "<Niños.mdf>". Operating System Error 32: (Process does not have access to the file because is being using by another process)"

For additional information my connection string is:

"Data Source = localhost\SQLExpress; Initial Catalog = Niños; Integrated Security = True; User Instance = false"

Does anyone have any idea on how to solve this problem?

Thanks
Alfredo.

Instance TCP Port Misconfiguration On Cluster Leads To Unrecorverable Situation....
Hi all. I have ran into a annoying situatin on sql cluster. Config is:
w2k3 EE x64 r2 - two nodes
sql 2005 x64 standart v2153
2instances, active-active cluster.
While changing tcp port configuration of one instance (using configuration manager) I have acidentaly created that setting:
- All IP dynamic port and All IP port was set to same number while separate IPs have enabled dynamic ports and does not have static port set.
This situation leads to unability of starting the instance anymore. There is no need wide explanation, its quite clear - while starting instace, it was configured with static port and with dynamic port with the same number, so port conflict error takes place. Problem was how to escape from this situation. On non clustered sql is quite easy, because these settings are stored in registry and also can be changed thorough Configuration manager, easy solution. Nor on the cluster.. Modifying the registry even on both nodes was unefective, every try to start instance fails with port conflict error and bad config was saved to registry again. I wasnt able to find where this config resides and change it to corect values. I have revealed only that it is not stored in instance master DB (restoring it from backup). Looks like its held somehow by cluster service itself, but I didnt find where it should be and how to edit it. So the last possible option take place (time was against me) - reinstalation of whole clustered instance. Nice example of how one click can create you a 2 days of work... Iam still interested if there is a smooth and easy way out of this situatin:-) So if anyone knows..... If there is not, I realy warn everybody.

Physical Setup: 1 Data File Vs Multiple Smaller Data Files
Hello all. Before my arrival at my current employer, our consultantsphysically set up our MSSQL 7 server as follows:drive c: contains the mssql enginedrive d: contains the transaction logdrive e: contains the data filesNo filegroups were set up and the data files consist of only 1 largephysical file. Currently, our data file is >10GB. When I was trained onthe physical aspects of sqlserver, I was told to never create physical files> 2048MB each. If I did, I could expect inefficient physical storage ofdata and slower performance (due to the OS).Our server has 2 RAID-5 arrays. Unable To Open The Physical File &&"testdb.mdf&&". Operating System Error 5
Hi:

* I set up gridview to display data from a attached .mdf file.
* The page can display while opening directly from VS 2005.
* It fails to display via http://localhost/mysite/ & give error:
"Unable to open the physical file "..../testdb.mdf". Operating system error 5"

I realize that each time I access localhost, it will prompt username/password, which I didn't set up. & I don't know what username/password should be. (But this may not be the problem.)

Open the database in sql management studio express
Under Secruity -> Users
I set 'dbo' with all permissions. but this won't work in the localhost...
  the 'guest' with datareader permission

Accessing The Header In The CSV File
Hi,

I am trying to load data from a csv file into a sql table. The csv file has 30 columns and 40-50 rows.

Here is an example of the csv file
Header: Painting, DryWall, Flooring
Row1: 100, 200, 300

Here is an example of the Department lookup table
DeptNo, DeptName
11, Painting
22, DryWall
33, Flooring

I have to load the sql table like this
DepNo, Cost
11, 100
22, 200
33, 300

I tried to read the csv with/without headers, couldn't find a way to get the header as I was reading through the rows to get to the DeptNo.

Any ideas. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Issue Accessing File In Lan
Hi,

I have a SSIS package which reads XXX.rpt file from a LAN share. This is a simple text file from a mainframe job. The package is stored in file system and invoked by a third party scheduler. The scheduler uses a specific NT account to run the package and the NT account has read access to the share. The SSIS package is not updating the rpt file in the share. It reads the rpt file and updates sql database.

The issue is when the package is run, it returns the following error:

Error: 2008-02-07 14:52:33.18
   Code: 0xC001401E
Source: Mycustom Data Extract Connection manager "MyText File"
Description: The file name "\myserverdev est.rpt" specified in the connection was not valid.
End Error

I have verified that the NT account has read access to the LAN share. Does the account should also have write access?

Thanks

Accessing A Database File
Hi,

I'm a hobby C# programmer, and when at university there are a few machines that have SQL Server 2005 installed on them (i think it's standard ed).

From looking around at sql 2005 free edition and DNN (dot net nuke) it's apparently possible to have the database file in the execution directory of your application.

My question is this, if i have a C# win app, is in possible for me to store the database files, in the executable directory of that app, and not in the default sql database store of C:prog filessql server90 data etc...?

Ie, what i want to do, is for the C# win application on start up to "mount" the database, use it normally like any other sql database, and then "unmount" it at the end.

The reason for "mounting" and "unmounting" is that i don't want the database to be accessible or even visible to sql server when the c# app isnt running.

I hope I've explained myself clearly, and thanks a lot in advance.

HELP !! Problem Accessing A MDF File In MS-SQLSERVER
Greetings Folks !!

I want to ask your assitance in this tricky problem. I have a computer application running on a 8 computer network. The application and the hardware were working ok, but something happened... The server has a Windows 98 installed and a MS-SQLSERVER 2000. The clientes have Win98 and the MS-SQLSERVER connection files.

Everything was good, but the owner of the server disconnected the server unwillingly and this affected the connection of the clients to the server. After that nobody got acces to the server. I checked first at the witch and everything was good. I saw that the terminals are able to see between each other, but not those clientes to server and viceversa.

I decided to reinstall completely Windows 98 and it worked. After that I reinstalled the MS-SQLSERVER 2000 and I have done this successfully. Of course I have copied my database onto a CD in order to restore those files later. After having the SQLSERVER running I tried to attach the MDF and LDF files. It really surprised me and I got a 5172 error message that tells me that the header of the MDF is invalid or something like that tells me about Pageaudit file incorrect. This never happened to me before, and I have read somwhere on the net that this happen when you try to restore a MS-SQLSERVER 2000 on a MS-SQLSERVER 7.0, but this is not my case. I am only working with MS-SQLSERVER 2000. I have tried another solution I found on the net to uninstall the MS-SQLSERVER and then reinstalled it and see the difference. It never worked. The problem now is that I want to attach it to MS. SQLSERVER and it shows me that the file is inavliudad but before saving th files onto a cd the application and its data was good. Do you have or at least do you know an utility that helps me to transfer those inner tables onto a text file or something like that ? Or do you have any other solution for this problem ??? Personally never had this problem before.

I really appreciate your feedback.

Thank you.

Accessing The Underlying Sql Query From The Rdl File
Our client uses the report builder to generate reports for collection of employees. We would like to use the employee records in this report to perform some additional processing (such as the list of employees gets assigned to a particular group).

Programmatically, I can retrieve a byte stream from rs.GetReportDefinition( "myClientEmpReport") and deserialize the stream into Report object (as define by ReportDefinition.xsd).

I can then manually drill down and retrieve the SematicQuery xml from the commandText field.

The problem is how to convert the SemanticQuery format into a T-Sql query that I can run against the view that the report model is based off of.

Is this possible?

Thanks,

Arjay

P.S. Running SQL 2005 Reporting Services, VC# 2005, ASP.Net 2.0.

Problem Accessing SDF File Larger Than 128 MB
Hello.

I created SDF database files for "SQL compact" with a size larger than 128
MB (which is default for creation). Now when I try to open these files with
VS2005 I get the error "The size of the databasfile exceeds the configured
maximum...Required Max Databse size (in MB; 0 if unknown)" (translated from
german). The real problem is that I can not change the connectionstring in
VS, cause all field which show the connectionstring are readonly (greyed
out). I know I have to set the option "Max Database Size = 512" or so in the
connectionstring to get the things runnning, but don't know any way to do
that in VS2005.
My attempt to access the SDF files when copied to the device via active sync
results in the same error message.

This seems for me to be a design flaw, cause I can not add the optional
parameter to the connection string (even not in the details form, where only
"DataSource" and "Password" fields are displayed.
- Does anybody know a solution in VS2005?
- Does anybody have a workaround for me?
- Does anybody know where the connectionstrings of VS2005 are stored, so
that I may "hack" the connection string?

Thanks so far.

Accessing Script File On Local Computer
I am trying to create a sproc creates several tables, views, and sprocs across several similar DBs (please...no lectures on structure...I didn't create this multi-DB setup) .

My sproc loops through the DBs and runs a script on each DB. I am running the Sproc from a client computer and cannot easily access the c drive on the SQL server.

The only way I have figured out how do do this is to run the following

xp_cmdshell 'isql d- %@mydb% i- c:script.sql'

inside a loop.

My problem is that xp_cmdshell refers to the server c drive instead of my local c drive, where my script file is.

Is there a way to refer to my local c drive? Also any thoughts on a better way to approach this (other than running the entire script inline in the sproc since I don't want to have to run quotes around each batch of the script).

Thanks
