Cannot Connect To SQL Server 2005 Express With Management Studio Express
On my home machine without permanent network connections enabled, I cannot get the Management Studio connect to the database server. Always get this error:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, erro: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)(Microsoft SQL Server)
I have used the SQL Surface Area Configuration Tool to reset the defaults to allow remote connections, stopped and restarted the server, but still get the same message.
Please help.

SQL SERVER 2005 Issue, Cannot Connect Using Management Studio Express
I am unable to connect to my database on a VPS server using server management studio express. I am able to ping the server. can connect to a local database but i have the same issue as others Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server have set the server so that it will allow remote connections and reset the server just to make sure that it has been implemented. when i use osql in command prompt to make a test connection it tells me this [SQL Native Client]Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [SQL Native Client]Login timeout expired [SQL Native Client]An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. on this forum it says to perform a ping and and an a ping a- to my server which does work. Have been working on this for 3 days and can't figure it out. Even had a guy in New Zealand who is usually my messiah of SQL and he can't figure it out so I'll be impressed if someone knows the answer. I will buy a crate of beer for the person who solves this for me as this problem is costing me money! Maybe even 2 if done by end of tomorrow 6pm GMT! I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area": (1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the following: Select Computer The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer. I Can No Longer Connect To My SQL Server Express 2005 From Manager Studio Express
Everything was working fine. I have been able to connect using windows authentication. Then, I went into the ODBC manager to add a data source and it failed to connect so I went back into the Server management studio to modify users. After doing this I now get an error when I try to conenct the management studio to the SQL server. I wasn't modifying the login for my windows account that I normally use, I was modifying a different one, however I now get the message "An error has occured while establishing a connection to the SQL server. This kind of problem can ocure because the default behavior of the server does not support all connection methods" blah blah. Does anyone know how I can attach to the server? Or, do I need to somehow remove the server and create a new one? How would I do that? Thanks in advance for any input.

Please, I use tyhe Visual Studion 2005 SQL Server Express Edition Management Studio (SMSE) to create the backend database and trying to set the connectionstring from the web config file, but what I continue to get as an error is that "<computername>/ASPNET" login failed for that user, cannot login to the Management Studio. Cannot Connect To Report Server From Management Studio Express
hello there, I appreciate any help on the following issue: When I want to connect to a local report server on as shown in the "Reporting Services Tools" tutorial (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-au/library/aa337424.aspx), the SSMSE does not show the option "Reporting Services" in the "Server type" drop down list in the "Connect to server" dialog. The tutorial says "In the Server type list, select Reporting Services. If Reporting Services is not on the list, it is not installed." This must be wrong as the SSCM clearly shows an installed and running "SQL Server Reporting Service (...)". Also if i call the webinterface (http://localhost/reports/) a page loads that says "SQL Server Reporting Services Home" with some options. And here something is not correct too. The "contents" tab of the report manager says "There are no items in Home." I started to work on some basic tutorials using the sql server business development studio, and everything works fine. I can create reports, which derive data from the AdventureWorks db properly. Can anyone tell me the adequate steps to fix the SSMSE connection problem and the webinterface view problem? Here are some additional informations: I use WinXP SP2, which makes the IIS version 5.1 SQL server is 2005 express with advanced features and i installed the management toolkit, and the AdventureWorks db. Installation history is as follows: .NET framework 2.0 + VS2005 professional edition was installed 1. installed ss2005express+advanced features, on a named instance. worked fine. I did not install the SSMSE at this point, as i knew it is included in the toolkit too. 2. configured the reporting services through the "reporting services configuration" tool. worked fine. 3. installed the management tool kit. worked fine. 4. installed the AdventureWorks db. installed, but was not attached automaticaly to the database engine. 5. attached the AdventureWorks db to the database engine manually. worked fine, can be viewed and accessed properly. So there I am. I have no clue what went wrong. A last hint that makes me think is this: In the SSCM the sql server an the sql server reporting services have different instance ids (MSSQL.1 and MSSQL.2 respectively). Hi all, I'm having a little trouble connecting to a SQLExpress instance on a remote domain using SQL Server Management Studio Express.I've read that by default the program is set up locally only, so have edited the Surface Area Configuration. It only gives me the option to edit 'Services and Connections' on the localhost, but have edited the Remote Connections to use TCP/IP and Named Pipes. In the Management Studio, I enter the server name, and login credentials. On the Connection Properties tab I changed the network protocol to TCP/IP though everytime I attempt to connect I get the following error message: Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rich

Server Express, Management Studio Express, Visual Studio Standard, And An ASP.NET Page....
I believe I'm missing something as far as my configuration goes...I'm new to working with SQL server and the databinding I'm trying to do. I have an ASP.NET page that has a radio button list box which I have databound to a database served up by SQL Express I'm having a lot of problems with connections... I was going to enumerate the behavior under each configuration (local only, remote tcp/ip only, remote pipes only, remote both), but I've realized that it is just flaky. Sometimes I can connect to the db with SQL Studio express, sometimes not. Sometimes I can add new tables and edit tables, sometimes not. Sometimes I can create a new connection when trying to databind from within Visual Studio, and sometimes not (sometimes I can't even connect, other times, I can connect initially but when I build a query through the designer it then has problems). Lastly, sometimes the ASP.NET page works correctly and sometimes not. This all seems to be mostly independent of how I configure SQL Server as far as what kinds of connections are allowed. I thought there was a pattern, but as I tested it more rigorously I found there wasn't. What I would like to do is be connected to the same DB with Visual Studio and SQL Studio, edit the DB as I wish, databind to it, and test my ASP.NET page, all without needing to jump through a bunch of hoops (although right now I wouldn't even know what those hoops are...it's just a shot in the dark as to what will work). It's all quite maddening and any help would be appreciated.

Cannot Connect To SQL Server With SQL Server Management Studio Express
I recently installed SQL Server Management Studio Express, and used it to connect remotely to SQL Server 2005 Express. The first connect worked fine. It was suggested to me to update ODBC drivers to connect to the server using Microsoft Access. In doing so, I found what I thought were Studio Express updates and tried to install them. From then on, I could no longer access the server. The error was a nebulous one that indicated that is could not find the server. I verified that the the server was set up correctly by installing Studio Express on another machine, and it connected fine. I uninstalled and reinstalled. When I ran it, I did not get the "first time use" routine, and still could not connect. I reinstalled MDAC with my Windows XP sp2 disk and reinstalling Studio Express, and still could not connect. I started a thread - http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/ShowPost.aspx?postid=2557611&siteid=1 - on SQL Server Express foram, and they verified that the server was set up correctly. They suggested that the client network protocol stack on your computer is broken. They suggested I post here to seek help in fixing it. Any help would be much appreciated. Steve Colino

SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express
I am trying to install SQL Server Management Studio Express(SSMSE) on Windows XP SP2. But installtion does not get completed. It goes unto last step in the installation and then rollback itself. At the lat screen it displayes the message that "SQL Server Management Studio Express installation could not be completed as it was intreupted". Though I did not do any thing? I tried at least 20 times but it ends up here. I followed all the steps as defined in SQL Server Express setup on Microsoft site? Any help would be appreciated. ADK

Hello, I have installed SQL 2005 Express Management Studio several times and It fails to completely install. I get a message that SQL Server Express 2005 x84 did not install properly. I tried to uninstall it and reinstall it but I get the same problem. My Visual Web 2005 Express Edition and Visual Basic 2005 Express gives an error when I try to add a new database. The error is: "Failed to generate instance of SQL server due to a failure copying database files. The connection will be closed. Does anyone know what I can do to resolve this? Bug With SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express
Every time I try to remove 'condensed type' from the custom table view (working in database diagrams) the MSE crashes on me, as soon as I push the < button to remove it from the list of columns. SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???
When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data. Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing). When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server. Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine? Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic? The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Cannot Connect To Sql Express Via ASP.NET After I Attached And Detached My Db To Sql Management Studio
Hello everybody, I have an ASP.NET 2.0 website running on a windows server 2003 - sql express management studio installed. Today I had to make some changes in my database, add some columns, and so on... So I put the app_offline.htm into the root of the web application, so the IIS unloaded the application domain, attached it in the sql management studio, made the changes I had to do and detached the db. Ok - then I removed the app_offline.html from the root of the application and looked at my internet explorer telling me that the user NT_network... cannot login... What did I do wrong? I attached it, detached it, and at once something went wrong... I tried everything, at least I copied the whole application to another directory and.... It worked fine again! So, can anybody help me, I don`t know what I did wrong or rather how to make changes in my sql express for the future, not having trouble with any security issues... regards Simon

Hi, I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum. Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it. I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list. Why Can't I See My Web Developer Express Database From SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Hi, I'm completely new to SQL Server and ASP.NET, so please bear with me on my learning curve! I've installed Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express (on the same PC). I then used Web Developer Express to successfully create a new database with a couple of tables in it. So far so good. I then installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the same PC and tried to connect to my new database. The connection to the SQL Server instance appears to work OK (using Windows Authentication) but I can't see the database I previously created. All I can see are the System Databases. Does anyone know what the solution might be?

Connecting VB Express Files To SQL Server Management Studio Express
Really confused ... I created 2 tables in a VB Express program (which went well). Problem is that I can't see/find those tables with MSME. I don't really understand how to connect the MSME to where the tables are. I created the tables under My DocumentsData and they are DBapp.mdf + DBapp_log.LDF and the tables are Items and Preferences. The VB application can "see" the tables OK. Do I need to move the tables to C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSQL.1MSQLDATA (like the Adventureworks installation which I haven't done) or what? How Do I Import Data In SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005
I am still a bit of a noob with SQL, but, when I use Enterprise Manager with my SQL 2000 server at the office, it is pretty simple to import data from pretty much any data source. I have not been able to locate the Transform facility in the 2005 express software that I downloaded onto my home pc (to help me learn SQL). Cannot Create New Project In SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005
I installed SQL Server Express 2005 and was able to install the sample databases. I have been working through the on-line tutorial. In Lesson 4 of the tutorial it instructs you to select File, New, Project. However, when I select File, New there is no Project choice listed. Have I failed to install something correctly? How To Install Management Studio Express 2005 After VS2008 On Server 2008?
Ok so here's what happened: Installed Server 2008 (64bit) Installed VS2008 (+SQL 2005 Express, by default) I've always installed SQL 2005 Dev (including the SQL Management Studio) before installing VS. Now I am trying to install just the management studio on this machine without success. I tried installing the SQL workstation tools package from the SQL 2005 DVD but the installer detects the tools installed by SQL express (osql, etc.., but no management studio GUI) and the installer refuses to install anything else. I also tried downloading the separate installer for SQL management studio but it doesn't like something also: first thing the installer does is display this mesage: "Installation of this product failed because it is not supported on this operating system For more information on supported configurations, see the product documentation." Any way to do this without having to reinstall VS? Thanks.

SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 Suddenly Stops Working?
Hello, I am using SQL Server Express 2005 with VS2005. Initially, I have installed SQL Server Express 2005 along with SQL Server Management Studio Express, and then as and when Service packs released I have installed all of them. My current version is SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 and SP2 Update. I used this for about 15 days, then suddenly SQL Server Management Studio Stopped working! without any reason. When I try to run SSMSEE (Sql Server Management Studio Express Edition), hard disk light flickers for a while and then nothing. To rectify this problem, I tried to repair the installation of SSMSEE through Add/Remove program, it went off successfully and now, SSMSEE ran perfectly, BUT, as soon as I restarted the computer and when I tried to run SSMSEE, same problem started again i.e. hard disk light flicker for a while and then nothing! So, I uninstalled SQL Server Express Edition along with all its baggage, and reinstalled the same. Again SSMSEE ran perfectly until I restart the computer. As soon as I restart and try to run the SQL SERVER MANAGEMENT STUDIO, it wont run. One more thing, only SSMSEE stops working , SQL Server is working perfectly. I am at my wits end. I can't understand what to do? Has anybody encountered this probelm? please help me?

I have installed SQL 2005 Express Edition on a Windows 2003 Web Edition server. Everything installed correctly, no errors to be found. I also have: Local & Remote Connections using TCP/IP only turne don SQL Browser is running as well. SQL Express && Server Management Studio Express
Hey Everyone, I am running a server with the following specs: Windows Server 2003 SP2 IIS SQL Express Server Management Studio ExpressI was trying to setup DotNetNuke 4.5.5 . I was watching a video on how to set it up and during it I started setting up my SQL. Whenever I launch the Server Management Studio Express, I select the instance I want and login using the local Admin account on my server. Whenever I attempt to create a new DB i get the following error: Create failed for Database 'test'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo) Additional Information: And exception occured while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionInfo) CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check releated errors. MODIFY FILE encountered operating system error 112(There is not enough space on the disk.) while attempting to expand the physical file. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1802)

Visual Studio 2005 Unable To Connect To SQL Server Express 2005
Hi, I have VS Pro 2005 and SQL Server Express 2005 installed on an XP Pro machine. When using VS 2005, in the 'Server Explorer' window I can see and attach to two SQL Server databases that I have set-up. But if I attempt to access the same databases from withn the 'Solution Explorer' window I get the following dialog box message, " Required Component Missing (Dialog box heading) Connections to SQL Server Files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express to function properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=49251 " I have uninstalled and then reinstalled both VS 2005 and SQL Server Express twice but it has helped. I don't understand why I'm getting this error because all of the server configuration tools and connection utilities seem to work fine but VS say's that SQL Server Express is not installed. Thanks, CLN P.S. I had another application that required MSDE 2000A to be installed. When I removed the other application I also removed MSDE 2000A and that's when the problem began.

Cannot Log Into SQL Server Database In Visual C# Express After Using SQL Server Management Studio Express
Is anyone else having the same annoying problem as me? ... I have a SQL Server Express edition database using Windows login authentication. Normally I can access it fine in C# Express, but If I have used SQL Server management Studio express in the same windows login session, i get: Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'mydomainmyuserid' If I restart my PC, I can then access the database in Visual C# express. I'm running Windows XP. Thanks!

SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 Can't See SQL Server Compact
Hi, I am very new to SQL Compact. I am trying to create one database which can work on the desktop application and also on a pda application. I want to create the database but I am unable to start without Management Studio. Can you guide me to the right tools so that I can create database, view it and manage it use something like Management Studio Express. Also one more question is if my database needs to be at both places on the desktop and on pda how can i synchronise them. PDA will take using c# application data from RFID scans and then i need to sync that database on the desktop so that reports and other info can be generated from the desktop c# application. File Name In SQL 2005 Management Studio Express
Hi there, I am just starting to learn SQL 2005 Express. After opening the Management Studio Express, I right Click on the Databases node and create new database. then create a name etc. The problem is that when I click ok to create the new database, I get a warning saying that Input a filename. However when I click on filename (after filepath) it is greyed out and I cant add a filename. Does anyone know how to remedy this? Regards DML

Are The Databases Created Within VWD Express Accessible By Aspnet_regsql.exe Or Management Studio Express?
Hi,When I attempt to add the membership functionality to a database created within VWD Express, by using the aspnet_regsql.exe application (connecting to ./SQLEXPRESS using Windows authentication), the database I've created within VWD Express doesn't appear within the list of accessible databases. I have the same problem when attempting to access the same database within Management Studio Express.Does this mean that databases created from within VWD Express don't use the same storage mechanism or paradigm as those already available within Management Studio Express? Or perhaps I need to somehow register the database using Management Studio Express? As a side note, I'm not sure if the "File/Open File" menu option within Management Studio Express holds the answer to my problems, but rather bizarrely, it crashes Management Studio Express when I select it.Apologies for the rambling - in essence my question is "How can I make databases created within VWD Express appear within aspnet_regsql.exe and/or Management Studio Express?"Many thanks,Jon

Visual Studio Database File And SQL Server Management Studio Express Question
I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason

I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

Installing Sql 2005 Management Studio Express On 2nd Hard Drive
Hi, I've downloaded the sql server 2005 management studio express executable to my second hard drive, as there is no room on my main drive However, when I try to install, the program shows me both drives, and shows that there is not enough room on my main drive, but it does not allow me to change the installation to my second drive. I have previously installed the main sql express product to my second drive with visual studio. There's loads of room. Can anyone give me a clue as to why this might be happening. Thanks John

2005 Database Will Be Created In Both Management Studio Express And App_Data Folder Of VS 2005?
I have not created SQL Server 2005 database before. When installing a sample SQL Server 2005 Express database using a Configure.exe file from the Microsoft Press Book 'ADOnet 2.0', I can see the database in the App_Data folder of the Solution Explorer on VS 2005, as well as Management Studio Express. But for the MS Press book 'ASPnet 2.0', the web site created from the virtual directory of sample code showed an ASPNETDB database in the App_Data folder, but no ASPNETDB database in the SQL Server Management Studio Express. Is this the way how SQL Server 2005 will work -- the database can be displayed in both the Management Studio and App_Data, as the ADONET 2.0 database showed, or just in the App_Data folder, as the ASPNET 2.0 databae showed?
