Obviously, I'm a complete n00b at SQL. I have a table in Access 2003 with about 6,000 records and there are about 20 records that have duplicate data in the first field (CompID). I'm trying to make the first field my primary key, so I need to fix these duplicate entry. I could export to Excel and fix the problem that way, but in the interest of learning SQL I want to figure out how to do it properly. Thanks in advance for what is hopefully a simple answer.

Hi,I have a form that should show 2 pictures based on table entries.I want those 2 pictures to be randomly selected based on a database table. Prevent Duplicate Entries In A Table
I have an ASP.Net Web appplication with a Back-End SQL DB. There are 3 Tables; Users, Groups, and GroupMember. The GroupMember table is used to link Users to Groups and consists of just two fields; userID and GroupID. Here is a sample of some data: User1 Group1 User1 Group2 User2 Group2 User3 Group1 User3 Group3 Users can belong to multiple Groups. However, you shouldn't be able to have the same user and group comobination more than once. for example: User1 Group1 User2 Group2 User1 Group1 I can stop this kind of duplicate data entry by doing a lookup first (using asp.net) to see if the entry already exists but this seems cumbersome. Is there a simpler way to prevent duplicate entries in a table using sql? Thanks a lot, Chris

HiOur product uses MS-SQL Server 2000. One of our customer has 10installations with each installation stroring data in its own database.Now the customer wants to consolidate these databases into one and wealready have plan for that by consolidating one DB at a time. Writting Trigger Or Procedure To Delete Duplicate Entries In A Table?
I am using Sql Server 2000. I have a customer table with fields - CustId, Name, Address, City, StdCode, Phone. I used to insert entries in this table from an excel file. One excel file will contain thousands of customer. In this table combination of StdCode and Phone should not be repeated. If I do it in my VB.Net coding.then application gets drastically slow. So I want to write a procedure or trigger for this. Here what I will do, I will send all records into database then this trigger or procedure will check for any existing entry of combination of StdCode and phone. If entry exists then this will delete new entry or will not allow this new entry. Is this possible to do using Trigger or stored procedure?

Retrieving Data From Table With 7 Million Entries Takes Time
Can anyone help me on this... when i select data from table using select statement it takes huge amount of time....The table contains 7 million entries and when i select by mentioning a criteria it takes around 45 secs..The system has 4GB RAM and Dual Processing CPU. The select statement does not contain any grouping and all.. Will it take this much time to retrieve data.?. The table does include an indexed field, So can anyone help me on the different things i can do to make the retrieval faster? Andy

Hi all I would like to know if its possible to "Save" records when they get deleted. For example: I have a table, tblUsers, with coulmns, UserID, Name, Surname, etc... In VWD I've created a GridView which shows everything on a webpage. I've also added a confirm return('Are you sure you want to delete the user?') option in OnClientClick field. What i want to achieve is, have some sort of log file, or log table if you want to call it that, of which users has been deleted by the end user. So, in later stages, i can see who deleted who, when, where, etc... - by building a report or view. All this should go to a seperate database or seperate table, it doesnt really matter. Hi... Is there any way to check previous row in SQL Query? I have a table with these column : Name1 Name2 Audit_Time (datetime) Changes I want to delete record from database in which the Audit_time is <'01/05/2004'. However before deletion, I want to check, if the Changes value is 'OLD' And the previous value is 'NEW', I will check the Audit_time of the NEW instead of OLD. Hi, Could someone shed some light on the best way to check a table recordcount before run of DTS pkg. We have a table that is populated in MS SQL from an Oracle database, and the contents of that table are the basis of a DTS package that we run. Sometimes Oracle transfer bombs out and the table is empty but our process runs anyway. It screws everything up. Can we check the recordcount of a table on the server, and if the recordcount > 1 then the process runs, if not, then the process aborts? Thanks, Dominic

i have large ssis package which is scheduled daily. The package uses a table on sql server as source and because the execution time is pretty long i just want to execute the whole package only if the data in the source table has changed since the last execution. unfortunatley in the source table there is no timestamp or something like that available. so i thougt about querying some logging information. is there a system table where the time of the last table transaction is stored?

Hi all! I need to check data changes in some tables from specified date. Can it be done without triggers for each table? SQL Server Management Studio always says "Data was changed" if another user updates data and you try to update old version. How it checks data modification date? Basically, i am still relatively new to ASP.net and SQL. And i have the following query. I have a skills table to which the user enters their skills using the following fields: Skillcatagory, SKill, Current Level, Target Level, target date and comments and the serial of the user. I need to check via our staff table, which people have had a skill entered for them. And then produce a report on who has not had a skill entered for them. How To Check Existance Of Temp Table
Within the execution of a t-sql script how do I check for the existance of a temporary table associated with the session or a global temporary table? My understanding is that the table name doesn't get placed in the current database sysobjects table - it goes into tempdb. But the object name is cryptic (so as to be unique) and I see no way of associating it with the current session (@@SPID). Thanks, Fred

Hi: I am trying to check a remote server with around 300 databases, to against its daily backup drive x:ackup*.bak all .bak files. Want to bring the dir *.bak info to a sql table with fileName, timeStamp and size. method 1. xp_cmdshell 'echo dir /p t:Backup*.bak > t:ackupoutput.txt' but the output.txt file only have one line of "dir /p t:akup*.bak" method 2. create a #temp table but could not get the dir result to it. Hi.. I got 10 Tables with data in it for 100 Loans. The data can be Good and Bad ..... I had a Update Proc which Updates the 10 tables with the Good data what ever i pass...for this 100 Loans Tha Proc will update the existing data in all tables whether it is Good or Bad Data. when the updating is completed I want to know what are the Loans that were updated where there is a Bad Data in atleast one Field of the 10tables. A Google search pointed me to a couple of pages that offered this simple recipe: if object_id('#temp') is not null print 'table exists'; (I have also tried 'tempdb.#temp', and 'object_id(..,'U')) Unfortunately, this doesn't work: the condition evaluates to 'false'. #temp is alive and well: strying to 'select .. into' it raises error > There is already an object named '#temp' in the database. Check If Temporary Table Exists
Hello. How can I check if a temporary table exists in the current context? With normal tables I'd do a EXISTS ( SELECT name FROM sysobjects WHERE name='myTableName' AND type='U') However, I can't do that with a temporary table. I'd have to go look at the sysobjects table in the tempdb database. The problem is that for temporary tables, a suffix is added to the name to make it unique for each scope. I can't change the WHERE clause to name LIKE 'myTableName%' because this would return true if a temporary table with the same name exists in a different scope. Any ideas? Carlos

Apologies if this has been answered before, but the "Search" function doesn't seem to be working on these forums the last couple of days. I'd just like to check if a table already exists before dropping it so that I can avoid an error if it doesn't exist. Doing a web search, I've tried along the lines of "If (object_id(sensor_stream) is not null) drop table sensor_stream" and "If exists (select * from sensor_stream) drop table sensor_stream" In both of these cases I get the error: "There was an error parsing the query. [ Token line number = 1,Token line offset = 1,Token in error = if ]" Sooooo... what is the standard way to check for existence of a table before dropping it? Someone help?
