Compact Edition V3.5 And SQL Server Management Studio

Is it possible to use SQL Server Compact Edition v3.5 with SQL Server Management Studio?
When I attempt to connect to a 3.5 database I get the following error:

"You are trying to access an older version of a SQL Server Compact Edition Database..."

I am using v3.5 beta 2.

If not, is there anything out there that provides a Query Analyzer like interface for viewing data that works with v3.5?

Thanks.

SQL 2008 Developer Edition Management Studio Does Not Work For Compact Edition 3.5 Databases

I am attempting to use the SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition (Management Studio) to create/manage a Compact Edition 3.5 database. My problem is that I cannot even create/open the compact database in Management Studio. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. TIA

Problem Creating the Compact Database:

Open 2008 Management Studio

From menu choose File | Connect Object Explorer...

Choose SQL Server Compact Edition as the Server type.

Choose <New Database...> as the Database file.

Browse to folder where file will be created (C:MyDatabase#1.sdf was used in my example)

Leave all other field as default selections OR make changes, either way it does not work.

Click OK.

At this point the OK button just becomes disabled and nothing happens.
Problem Opening An Existing Compact Database:

Open 2008 Management Studio

From menu choose File | Connect Object Explorer...

Choose SQL Server Compact Edition as the Server type.

Choose <Browse for more...> as the Database file and locate a ".sdf" file that I created using VS2008.

Enter password, if any.

Click OK.

The following exception is displayed:

SQL Compact Edition 3.5 Vs. SQL Server Management Studio 2008, FileNotFoundException Microsoft.SqlServerCe.ManagementUI
Hi,I'm having an exception below when i tried to connect to SQL Server Compact Edition from SQL Server Management Studio (10.0.1075.23 ((SQL_PreRelease).071108-1357 )).I downloaded and installed the SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 from this link below :http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=38ed2670-a70a-43b3-87f3-7ab67b56cbf2&displaylang=enAnd I downloaded and installed the SQL Server 2008 Development edition from this link below :http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=104963It seems that the SQL Server 2008 Development edition comes with the these 2 SQL CE below :- Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 Beta ENU. Product Version: 3.5.5608.0.- Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 Beta Management Tools ENU. Product Version: 3.5.5608.0I tried to uninstalled these 2 and re-install the SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 Files, but it didn't help.Currently I'm uninstalling SQL Server 2008 because the command prompt installation instruction page could not be found in the books online, so i'm trying my luck to uninstall SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 and reinstall the whole SQL Server 2008. The main reason why I was trying to install SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition is only to manage SQL Server Compact 3.5 database file. Since i upgraded the database into 3.5, i was not able to open it anymore using SQL Express 2005 Query Designer in the VS 2008 is just like the sql view query designer which is not as good as sql management studio. I'm reminiscing the good old days with query analyzer Any advice to resolve this issue?
Thanks in advance Steps :1. Choose Database : SQL Server Compact Edition2. Choose Any of the Database file options (New Database or Browse for more)3. How Can I Access SQL Server Compact Edition With SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Hello,

I just installed SQL Server Compact Edition, since I am considering using it instead of SQL Server Express for a local database in my application.   The documentation mentioned that I could use SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect to the Compact Edition and create and manipulate databases.

To try to connect,  I run Management Studio and bring up the  "Connect to Server" dialog.  Unfortunately, the pull-down list of "Server name"s does not include the SQL Server Compact Edition server. I do not know how to type in the server name manually, so I cannot connect.

To install Compact Edition, I downloaded it and ran "SQLServerCE31-EN.msi".  This installed, and I assume registered, a number of DLLs in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server Compact Editionv3.1".

Is there perhaps an additional step that I left out to complete the installation?

Might I need an upgrade to some other components?  My Management Studio Version is:

     - Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express      9.00.2047.00

I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Thank you,

WTW

SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 Can't See SQL Server Compact
Hi,

I am very new to SQL Compact. I am trying to create one database which can work on the desktop application and also on a pda application. I want to create the database but I am unable to start without Management Studio. Can you guide me to the right tools so that I can create database, view it and manage it use something like Management Studio Express.

Also one more question is if my database needs to be at both places on the desktop and on pda how can i synchronise them. PDA will take using c# application data from RFID scans and then i need to sync that database on the desktop so that reports and other info can be generated from the desktop c# application. How to do this?

Please can you guide me to any webcasts or labs so i can clarify my doubts about the design.

2. I want my SQL Express server in SQL Server 2005 to be a distributor and publisher

About 1. In SQL Server Management Studio I cannot choose SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 .
ABout 2. I tried to setup my server to be a distrubutor by running a stored procedure with the following name: sp_adddistributor. I get the following error: This edition of SQL Server cannot act as a Publisher or Distributor for replication.

Does anyone have a solution to both problems.

Hello,

we've got a SQL Server 2005 which replicates with an SQL Server Compact 3.5. Every 10 to 20 synchronisations we're getting the error mentioned above. A Soft reset of the device helps to make the synchronization working again.

Why is this error happening and how can we resolve this?

BTW, we've also running system that replicates with an SQL Server Compact 3.0 without having this problems.

Updating To SQL Server Management Studio Developer Edition Is Not Working
I got VS Pro which came with SQL Server Management Studio Developer Edition.  Very exciting!  However, when I go to update from SQL Server Management Studio Express to Dev Edition it says that there are tools / components already installed.  I completely uninstalled everything having to do with SQL Server from my machine and tried again.  It still says that the tools / components are installed.  I see that there are still several instances of SQL Server still on my machine.  So I tried reinstalling Express again.  However, now the Configuration Manager has a snap-in that won't start.  Any help would be much appreciated.

SS Compact Edition 3.1 And Visual Studio Express.
Hello,

I have a SQL Server CE 3.1 database, which I want to connect to.
Browsing through the documentation, It's not clear to me which tools to use for this.
I have installed VS 2005 express edition (with sp1), but it can't connect to .sdf and
version VS 2008 only connects to SS CE 3.5.
The tools installation file ssce31vstools-ENU.exe file doesn't install on express edition
it seems, as I get an error message, that the patch is not valide.
I also installed the SS Management studio, but it doesn't seem to be able to handle .sdf.

Am I missing something obvious here? I am simply trying to access and modify a SS CE 3.1
databse...
Thanks for the help

Using SQL Server Management Studio Tools To Manage Dbs On SQL Server Express Edition
Hopefully a simple question:  Is it possible to use Maintenance Plans created on SQL Server Management Studio (installed as part of an instance of SQL Server 2005 Standard Ed.) to back up databases running on an instance of SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services?  I don't need directions, just whether or not it is permitted.

I've been able to create the plans including establishing connections to from SSMS to the the SQL Express instance, but they keep erroring out.  I just need to know if this is actually permitted since Maintenance Plans are not available on Management Studio Express Edition.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi,

I have two running SQL servers on my local machine and all surrounding SQL

wasn't contactable in any way... After finished installation of second one
and after applying service packs I turn on SQL Server Management Studio and
still nothing in local servers pane when Browsing for servers to connect but
in network servers after few seconds I see one of my local servers (first one
installed) and one SQL Server 2000 on other machine (on this one I can't
connect because of time out error).  Also when browsing for servers in Local
Servers I see my machine in Integration Services. Only difference between
this running services is that Integration service log on as Network Service
and all other SQL services log on as Local System account and on SQL Server
that is invisible I have also SQL Server Reporting Services running.
Services looks like this:

How Can I Install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition's Management Studio On A Desktop Machine?
I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Prof Edition on a Vista machine and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on a Windows 2000 server. They will be used as a development environment for us. As we need to management the SQL Server 2005, we would like to install the 2005 Developer SSMS on the Vista machine such that we can manage the SQL Server 2005 developer instance installed on that Win2k machine. However, the system does not allow us to do it. We have the express edition autoamtically installed while we installed the Vistual Studio. Is there any workaround that i can still install the 2005 developer SSMS without uninstall the sql server 2005 Xpress version? Or, I have to uninstall the Xpress version before i can install the 2005 developer's SSMS? Please help!

I have a problem when I try to create a new connection with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from Visual Studio 2005 IDE. When I€™m going to choose the data source, the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition provider doesn€™t appear in the list. So, I don€™t understand why couldn€™t I create a new connection with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from Visual Studio 2005 IDE?

I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

Visual Studio 2005 Standard And SQL Server Management Studio?
I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features.

I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio?

I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional?

I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool.

How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase.

Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology.

My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn.

ASP.NET And SQL Server Compact Edition
I am writing an application that is designed for the desktop, or small group (3 or less) desktops.  The application is being deployed using the Cassini web server as a complete "embedded" solution.  I wanted to use SQL Server Compact because of its small footprint and because of the synchronization capabilities with SQLServer.  Also, it is very easy to deploy vs. SQL Server Express.  The idea behind this APP is that someone might use it locally and then decide to subscribe to the service and then connect the same application to  a web services application.
 That being said, and with knowledge of Microsoft's stance on SQL Compact under ASP.NET, I have most everything working and it works great except for one thing.  When I add a SQLDataSource to the page and set the connection string to my file and the DataProvider to System.Data.SqlServerCe and then bind a data grid to the SQLDataSource, it runs fine on my development machine, but when I deploy to my clean test machine, I get an error when the page loads saying:
Unable to find the requested .Net Framework Data Provider.  It may not be installed.
I can create a dataset in code (in fact,in several other places I do) and it works fine.  It is just the SQLDataSource(s) that are throwing this error.  I have a copy of System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll in the bin folder and I have all of the compact DLL's in the bin folder as well.  I can't figure out what I need to do.  I also have a reference to the System.Data.SqlServerCe in the web.config file.
 Can anyone help?

Looking For A Very Simple SQL Server Compact Edition App Example
Hi to all,

I am new to VS, hence new to CF too,

Using VS2005 SP1, CF2.0, PocketPC Mobile 5.0 emulator.

Im looking for the most  simple example I can get to create a db and a table just to understand the very basics of SQL Server Compact Edition.

I did some gui examples posted in MSDN, it worked fine, no problem.

But I don't want to  use the toolbox dragging DataGrid, DataSourceBinding or Northwind.sdf, or any of that.

All I need is to be able to create a simple db, a table with two columns, and a connection to do very simple query,

I searched and searched, cannot find my simple guide.

Can anybody help me resolving this?

here is my test.

opened a new project, named MydbTest2
added a reference to System.Data.SqlServerCe
added a button to the form1
added a using directive System.Data.SqlServerCe
and this is the rest.

I get errors about
Error 1 The name 'myConn' does not exist in the current context F:My.VS.ProjectsMydbTest2MydbTest2Form1.cs 33 13 MydbTest2

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.ComponentModel;
using System.Data;
using System.Drawing;
using System.Text;
using System.Windows.Forms;
using System.Data.SqlServerCe;
using System.IO;

namespace MydbTest2
{
    public partial class Form1 : Form
    {

        public Form1()
        {
            InitializeComponent();
        }

        private void menuItem1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
            this.Close();
        }

        private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
            string connStr = "Data Source = myDbTest.sdf";
            SqlCeEngine myEngine = new SqlCeEngine(connStr);
            myEngine.CreateDatabase();
            SqlCeConnection myConn = new SqlCeConnection(connStr);
            myConn.Open();

            SqlCeCommand cmd = myConn.CreateCommand();
            cmd.CommandText = "CREATE TABLE myTable (firstCol int, secondCol nvarchar(10))";
            cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();

        }
    }
}

Help - SQL Server 2005-&>Compact Edition Replication
Hi All ...I
have been following the MS on-line tutorials to get replication setup
between SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server Compact Edition. I get to the
point where I run the Configure Web Synchronization and it is running
through the process where it is doing the automated configuration of
the shared directory - assigning users etc.I have attempted
this step with a user account that I expressly created for snapshots
and with the Administrator account and get the following error message:* The operation completed successfully. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070000)At
first, I thought this was a rights issue due to the fact that I was
using an account that I manually created. However, by using the
Administrator account (test only until I can figure this out) that
should have removed any rights issues associated with accessing the
shared directory where the snapshot will reside.Any help in getting this figured out will be greatly appreciated.David L. Collison Any day above ground is a good day!

MS SQL Server 2005 Compact Vs. Express Edition?
Hi.

I am in the process of moving my sql server 2000 DB to a stand-alone box. I am also considering upgrading to sql server
2005 (at this point, the DB isn't too complex) and was just on
the MS site reading over my options. I was hoping to get some
"real world" feedback about the differences between the compact and express editions. Are there any major drawbacks to either?
The site I am currently working with is not too complex - only one database server - but will be growing significanly over the next year.

I appreciate your help.
thanks!

Creating A Local SQL Server Compact Edition DB
Hi All ...

I'm setting up replication for the 1st time following the steps in the Books Online to get it up and running:

ms-help://MS.SSCE.v31.EN/ssmmain3/html/5a82aa7a-41a3-4246-a01a-2b1e4b2fdfe9.htm.
Anyhow, I get down to the section labeled - Create a new SQL Server Compact Edition database and am having a problem.  I open SQL Server Management Studio as instructed.  I click Connect and then am supposed to select SQL Server Compact Edition - yet can't find that option.
And, yes, I've installed Compact Edition on my development laptop.  So, how do I get this option so that I can create the local DB for Compact Edition and continue development?
UPDATE:
Ok, duh moment, I have SQL Server Management Studio Express loaded on my laptop, so did not have the option.  I've attempted to uninstall SQL Server Management Studio Express and install the full version from the SQL Server CDs.  However, when I go to install the full version it tells me that the management tools are already installed and won't let me install anything.  So, how do I get around this so that I can install full version of SQL Server Management Studio and then get the option to connect to the SQL Server Compact Edition?
Any help will be appreciated.
UPDATE 2:
Ok, figured it out.  You can't just uninstall SQL Server Management Studio express, you must go in to Add/Remove Programs, SQL Server 2005, Change.  Then select to uninstall the Workstation components.  Then you can go use the SQL Server install discs to install the full blown SQL Server Management Studio along with the other Workstation components.
Thanks ...

ODBC Driver For SQL Server Compact Edition
I know that there is no ODBC driver available for SQL Server Compact Edition version 3.5.  Do you plan to add an ODBC driver in future release? If yes, is it high in your priority list?

The scenario why I am looking for an ODBC driver is to connect an MS Access application to a SDF file instead of MDB file.  This will enable me to easily sync the SDF file with SQL server repository using the new Data Sync Services.

SQL Server Compact Edition Resident On USB Drive ?
We have an application in which we would like to have a SQL Server database, the database manager and an application program all resident on a USB drive. When the USB drive is connected to a Windows based computer, the database should be viewable without requiring installation of the SQL Server software on the computer. The concept is similar to that of the U3 Smart USB systems.
I am aware that Microsoft and SanDisk have a joint research project in progress that is expected to result in a replacement for the U3 software sometime in 2008.

SQL Server Compact Edition 2005 For 64bit OS
Hello

I'm trying to use application designed for 32bit operating system on 64bit (Longhorn beta 2). This application requires SQL Server CE 2005, I installed it (x32) but the application still says that it isn't.

What can be the problem? I suggest the application cannot retrieve information about SQL Server CE installation. But maybe the reason is I need to install something like SQL Server CE for 64bit operating system? Is it present "in native"?

SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition + .NET Version 1.0

Hello,

    I want to learn if it is possible to develop applications for SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition using .NET Compact version 1.0. The major doubt is the possibility for version 1.0. It is reasonable to deliver SQL Compact Edition redistributables with an application, but this is not great to require ,NET 2.0.

    Many thanks.
