Connection Failed: 18456 Error

When one of my users creates an ODBC connection to a SQL database using Windows authentication, he gets this error:

Connection failed: SQLState: '28000' SQL Server Error: 18456
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for user
'Domainusername'

The thing is, the 'Domainusername' is not his username and I have no idea where or why it is trying to use that username.

Ideas?

Error 18456 Login Failed For User ""
I get this error when trying to connect. I'm using the sa id and password for all of my odbc connections. It fails when trying to connect to this one but it's ok on a couple of others I've set up with the same id etc.
Where is this "" coming from and how to avoid it in the future?

I've removed and recreated the connection to be sure that I didn't actually type that in as the id....hey it's monday...it could happen.

Error 18456 State 11 -- Login Failed For Wrong User
A user is trying to connect to a server via windows authentication from SQL management studio on her desktop.

The log file on the server gives:
Login failed for user: domain1user1
Error : 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11

The strange thing is that the user in the error above is not the user she's trying to connect as (domain2user2, say).
user2 can remote desktop to the server and log in there.

I know this state implies "Valid login but server access failure".

Has anyone run into this, and what more information would be useful to know? Thanks!

Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16. Login Failed For User
Hello.

I get this error when I try to connect to my SQL Server with JDBC:

Excepcion en MyPool Pool.getNewConnection() [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC][SQLServer]Cannot open database "lituania" requested by the login. The login failed.

And in the ERRORLOG I get:

2002-02-22 19:59:46.62 Logon Login failed for user 'frontend'. [CLIENT: 10.0.0.75]

I found it is supossed to be a password mismatch:

but I checked the password is correct.

Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

The strange part is that I get the following error when it goes to test the connection:

The test connection to the linked server failed
Login failed for user 'Domainuser'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456)

I can use the SQL mangement studio to conenct to the database using this same login.
The login has all the server roles assigned to it also.

SSPI Handshake Failed With Error Code 0x8009030c While Establishing A Connection With Integrated Security; The Connection Has Be
Hello, I have a sql 2005 server, and I am a developer, with the database on my own machine. It alwayws works for me but after some minutes the other developer cant work in the application

He got this error

Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. [CLIENT: 192.168.1.140]

and When I see the log event after that error, it comes with another error.

SSPI handshake failed with error code 0x8009030c while establishing a connection with integrated security; the connection has been closed. [CLIENT: 192.168.1.140]

He has IIS5 and me too.

I created a user on the domain called ASPSYS with password, then in the IIS on anonymous authentication I put that user with that password, and it works, on both machines.

and in the connection string I have.

<add key="sqlconn" value="Data Source=ESTACION15;Initial Catalog=GescomDefinitiva;Integrated Security=SSPI; Trusted_Connection=true"/>

I go to the profiler, and I see that when he browses a page, the database is accesed with user ASPSYS, but when I browse a page, the database is accesed with user SElevalencia.

Thats strange.

The only way that the other developer can work again on the project is to restart the whole machine. He has windows xp profession, I have windows 2000.

If you want me to send logs please tellme

Login Failed: Msg 18456, Level 14, State 11
Hi,

Last night I setup my MOSS 2007 server and SQL 2005,I got everything working fine in short order.

I had forgotten to look for updates for SQL 2005 so i decided I would run Windows Update.

SQL Server 2005
Critical Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB 934458)

Tuesday, March 04, 2008
Microsoft Update

SQL Server 2005
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB 921896)

Those two updates were applied, then after a reboot I began getting the login failed error.

I can login using windows authentication as DOMAINAdministrator, I can also login as SA, but i am trying to figure out why it is denying me logins as DOMAINSharepoint

Has anybody had prior experience with this or know what the deal is?

TIA,

-Drew

Login Failed For User Domaindomcontroller$ - 18456
I am running several instances of SQL Server 2005 sp2 on a W2k3 sp2 box (member server).

This morning, I installed reporting services to one of my instances and shortly after noticed I was getting the following two messages in my SQL Server log file:-

08/08/2007 11:05:03,Logon,Unknown,Login failed for user 'DOMAINDOMCONTROLLER$'. [CLIENT: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]
08/08/2007 11:05:03,Logon,Unknown,Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 16.

The above entries were each repeated 6 times every 15 minutes but with State 11. I created a logon for the above, and now get the above messages (state 16) repeated 3 times every 15 minutes!

Any ideas why?

Regards

Ian

17055 18456 Login Failed For User 'sa'.
SQL2000 SP4 (SQL and Windows authentication) on Win2000SP4. Event ID 17055 (18456: Login failed for user 'sa'.) is being logged at an average of 20 times an hour. Tried to run SQL Profiler but it no trace information on the source (host, ip or application) of the failed login. Some forums suggest to unplug the server from network to know if its a local or networked issue but this is not possible in my case. Acquiring firewall/router logs from Network team is a headache. Any help on pinpointing what/where is this failed login coming from is very much appreciated.

The AcquireConnection Method Call To The Connection Manager &&"&&<Connection Name&&>&&" Failed With Error Code 0xC020200
Hi All,
I am getting the following error if I am using the package "Transaction Option=Required" while running through Sql Job:
The AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "<connection name>" failed with error code 0xC0202009.

while I running the SSIS package on BI environment, I am getting the following error:
[Connection manager "<connection name>"] Error: The SSIS Runtime has failed to enlist the OLE DB connection in a distributed transaction with error 0x8004D00A "Unable to enlist in the transaction.".

I know the alternative solution is to make the "Transaction Option=Supported", but in my case I have run the whole flow in a single transaction. I came to know that this has been fixed in the service pack1(ref. to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914375). FYI.. some time it was running successful.

I have taken all the necessary step to run the SSIS package in a distributed transaction(like the steps for MSDTC) and also created the package flow in a sequence.

I was going through the link - http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=160340&SiteID=1 but all those didn't solve my problem.

If anyone can help me it will be great. or it is a bug in SSIS?

Thanks.

Error: The Connection Manager Failed To Defect From The Transaction.

Does anybody know what it means?
The context is: a package with a single Data Flow finishes with this error: [Connection manager "xxx"] Error: The connection manager failed to defect from the transaction.
All components inside the data flow reports a successfull green status, however the DataFlow Task remains yellow for a long time, when suddenly the package stops with the above message. Another information is that the table remains locked during package execution (a select on that table does not complete...). This is a serious issue, and I couldnt find any relevant information about that. Thanks in advance.

Login Failed For User '(null)' Error When Opening A SQL Connection
Hello everyone. I'm very new to asp.net. I've been coding in vb.net for a while now (getting my associates degree in desktop application programming) and my boss wants all of my new applications to be web based now. Well, i decided to take some initiative on this and begin a new project for my department. This is a very small project. So far, everything is coming along alright (i found an eBook that's helped me quite a bit). Everything was cool until yesterday when i tried to connect to our sql server database. Because i'm testing this on my system as well as the remote system which hosts the application, i can see the error message on the remote system. Here is the error it's giving me:

Connection Failed Error Creating Data Source For Server
Hopefully there's an easy answer for this. I'm totally new to SQL server and I'm trying to upsize an Access database. Whether I use the upsizing wizard or try to create a data source through the ODBC Data Source Administrator, I get a connection failed error. It tells me the server does not exist or my login is incorrect. I'm using NT authentication to connect to the server on my local drive. I just installed the whole 2005 express edition and the only thing that came up during the install was that I didn't have IIS installed. Ididn't see how that would be relevant, so I went ahead with the install.

Shouldn't this work with the default setup?I've searched around trying different "solutions" although I doubt they were specifically related to this very basic problem. I tried giving my login every right I could find through in the database engine properties in the server management studio, which connects fine itself with just my network login name and no password. What am I missing?

SQL Server 2000 Server: Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Line 1 Login Failed For User 'sa'.
As an 'SA' I thought that you have permission to do anything on the server. Running an update command from Query Analyzer is throwing this error:

SQL Server 2000 SP3

Server: Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Line 1
Login failed for user 'sa'.

The table is in the dbo schema.

Has anyone seen this error before?

Help! AcquireConnection Method Call To The Connection Manager Failed With Error Code 0xC0202009
The package runs fine if I run it by itself. Unfortunately we want to call it from another package and when we do so it fails everytime with the following error; "AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager "BPCSF" failed with error code 0xC0202009." This package is calling an AS400 and pulling data from it into a staging environment. The task that is failing is 4th task on the list and is the 3rd task to call the AS400 environment. If I need to provide more information I would be happy to do so. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Login Failed For User 18456 When Using Asymmetric Key For Login
Hi,

  I wanted to check the asymmetric key option in sql 2005. I copied the books online code for creating a asymmetric key and then used this key for creating a login. Now when I try to login without entering any password I am receiving 18456 error. I would like to know what I am missing here. If I use CREATE LOGIN from asymmetric key or certificate how do I login and with what credentials. Do I need to provide any password.CREATE ASYMMETRIC KEY PacificSales09

ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = 'bmsA$dk7i82bv55foajsd9764';

SQL Server Error 18456
I'm running an Access 2000 Database on Windows 2000. The Access Database links to SQL Server 2000 tables. The error occurs when the users login with their windows login (my sql server is mixed authentication) and open the database to open the tables or forms. The connection will fail with the following:

Connection failed:
SQLState '28000'
SQL Server Error 18456
[Microsoft][ODBC SQLServer Driver][SQL Server]Login failed for domain/'user"

I used in the Data Source set up and tested the connection and I have as WindowsNt authentication using the network login ID from (Access) All these users are in added to sql server as users for these database using windows authentication.

The users belong to the group in sql server "users" (sql server computer managent), when i add the "administrator" group to their login then they can login without anyproblems but for obvious security reasons i have to take them out of the administrator's group.

things i already checked:

sql server is mixed authentication
odbc conection to sql server database is windows authentication (from access i used the link table option to sql server and created a conection to sql server)
user has read and write access to the sql server database and select to the tables.
user is part of the user group in sql server
the user is under the domain users group in active directory.
no deny rights in sql server for this user.
My sql driver version is 2000.85.1117 and when i test it says odbc driver version 03.85.1117.

my sql server 2000 sp is mdac version 2.80.1022 and the user's desktop is version mdac 2.8 sp1 on windows XPS2. she is a member of the user's group with her windows login domainuser , i added her to the database wiht db_reader and db_writer rights and i also add her as only user (without the domain) . my sql server is with mixed authentication. in active directory she is part of the built in user's group.....

so i logged in as administrator to his computer and deleted the odbc dsn and created a new one (under file dsns) , made sure it Nt authentication and set the default database tested the conection and it works (run as administrator). i relinked the tables in the database with this new dsn and it works fine. i logged off and logged in with the users credentials. when i try to use that table then i get a message saying 'ODBC-conection to DATA MB conection failed'.

Is there anything else to check for? :eek:

Thanks in advance.

Error 18456 State 6
Hi,

I am trying to connect to a remote SQL server via Management Studio. I am using the windows credentials I use to log into the computer but when I enter the same domainusername and password I get error 18456. I check the logs and see it is a state 6 error. After checking http://blogs.msdn.com/sql_protocols/archive/2006/02/21/536201.aspxI see that means
Attempt to use a Windows login name with SQL Authentication

Is it possible for me to access a SQL server remotely?

Thanks

.Net 2003 Access Crystal Report XI: Error:Failed To Open The Connection: [Database Vendor Code: 17 ]
I am receving this error: Failed to open the connection: [Database Vendor Code: 17 ], from .Net 2003/C# to Crystal Report XI with SQL Server 2000 has backend database.

Is there a security permission that has been overlooked?

Here is the code I use to access CR XI

ConnectionInfo connectionInfo = new ConnectionInfo();
TableLogOnInfo tableLogOnInfo;
Database DB;
'CrystalDecisions.CrystalReports.Engine.Table' table;
Tables tables;

//Log in
connectionInfo.ServerName = "ServerName";
connectionInfo.DatabaseName = "Database Namet";
connectionInfo.UserID = "userid";
connectionInfo.Password = "password";

//Get Table inf from report
DB = reportDocument..Database;
tables = DB.Tables;

//Looping through all the tables in CR and apply connection info
for(int i = 0; i < tables.Count; i++)
{
table = tables[ i ];
tableLogOnInfo = table.LogOnInfo;
tableLogOnInfo.ConnectionInfo = connectionInfo;
table.ApplyLogOnInfo(tableLogOnInfo);

}

CrystalReportViewer.ReportSource = ReportDocument.ReportSource;
CrystalReportViewer.Visible = true;

Any advise would be helpful.

Setting Up Replication Gives Error 18456 - Please Help
I am using the Configure Publishing and Distribution Wizard in the SQL Server Enterprise Manager to configure a server as a Distribution and Publishing server. The security configuration on the server in question for authentication is SQL Server and Windows NT.

When I get to the first page in the wizard I select that I want to use the server as the Distributor. The other option is to use another server for the Distribution server - and this isn't what I want to do. The next page presents the option to use the default settings to configure the distribution databases or to configure the setup. If I select the default options I get the following error message when the arrow is pointing to Configuring Distributor:

----------------------------------------------
SQL Server Enterprise Manager could not configure 'SERVER1' as the Distributor for

'SERVER1'.

Error 18456: Login failed for user 'sa'.
Remote logins for remote server 'repl_distributor' have been dropped.
Server dropped.
Server added.
Server network name set.

----------------------------------------------

Something I have tried to change in order to fix this issue is the 'Replication agents on the Distributor log into the Publisher:' option from its default (By impersontating the SQL Agent account on 'SERVER1' (trusted connection)) to 'Using SQL Server Authentication of this account:', and in those fields I have put in 'sa' (which is a valid admin account to the SQL server) and the correct password.

In all cases I get the message above. Can anyone help me to see what I am doing wrong?

Thanks for your time,
Eric Gross
