Can I Run SQL Server 2008 - Reporting Services CTP Until Microsoft Sells SQL 2008

Mar 31, 2008

There are a few features in the new SQL Server - Reporting Services that I really need in production. I have tested everything and it works great. I am running the CTP version since Microsoft is saying they aren't releasing the release version until 3rd quarter 2008.

Since Microsoft won't sell SQL 2008 until 3rd quarter, can I run the CTP in production until the release and then purchase SQL 2008?

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 CTP, February 2008

Mar 7, 2008

Hi all,

New to this so please be patient and please help.

I have developed an SQL 2005 Express command line option install for our company which has been working seamlessly for the last 18 months.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144259.aspx

I downloaded the €œMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 Express CTP, February 2008€? from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=749BD760-F404-4D45-9AC0-D7F1B3ED1053&displaylang=en

I simply replaced the 2005 file €œSQLEXPR.EXE€? with the 2008 file €œ€?, recompiled the installation and tested only for it to fail. I than read the 2008 books online and noted the change in command line options.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=19DB0B42-A5B2-456F-9C5C-F295CDD58D7A&displaylang=en

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144259(SQL.100).aspx

I then changed the command line to suit the Microsoft 2008 books online, recompiled the installation and tested only for it to fail once more.

Interestingly I tested the install from the default GUI and at the point of adding the €œsa€? login credentials it fails to allow the installation to proceed. Strangely by selecting the windows authentication credentials, €œnext€? than €œback€? it now allows me to add the €œsa€? login credentials and continues to install correctly as required.

I hope I have explained this clearly enough.

1. Is this a bug in the €œMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 CTP, February 2008€? installation?
2. If so is this causing the command line install options to fail?
3. How do I obtain a version of €œMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 Express€? that will work installing from the command line?

Thanks in advance.

Microsoft SQL Server Express And Microsoft Visual Studio...

Mar 17, 2008

I have a query that executes just fine except that it won't recognize varchar(255) ( or any other value within the () ) and if I leave it off like this: varchar, then it executes but it leaves that value as 1 and that is just not very useful for my purposes. This also happens with anything else that requires () to add length such as char(), or nvarchar(), etc... Any ideas?

Required Microsoft Sql Server 2005 Express Server Roles For JDBC Connection

Mar 28, 2007

Hi!

I have developed a database in MS SQL Server 2005 Express, to which I would require only bulkadmin server role from an external java application, because I only need to update rows, insert values or use select queries in the database.

The problem is that, using either the Microsoft JDBC Driver 1.1 or the Java JDBC ODBC Driver and the Windows XP Data Base (ODBC) configurations, I need a user with sysadmin server role inside Sql Server, otherwise JDBC won't connect to the database using the selected user. Even if I leave the sql login with setupadmin or any server role lower than sysadmin, the connection is refused.

Is there no way to connect using JDBC to MS Sql Server 2005 other than granting the connected user sysadmin rights? My code looks as follows:

Code Snippet

String driver = "com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver";
String url = "jdbc:sqlserver://FIREBLADE\SQLEXPRESS";
String user = "username";
String password = "password$$";
Connection conn;

Class.forName(driver);
conn = DriverManager.getConnection(url,user,password);
if (conn != null)
System.out.println("SQL Server Connection established ...");

I have heard that Java JDBC connections to Microsoft require high-level access.

Any informed answer is more than welcome. Thanks for reading my post!

Is Microsoft Free* Elearning For Sql Server 2005 Useful For Learning SQL Server 2000?

Feb 13, 2006

I'm working towards MCAD and as elective I want to do the SQL Server course. The exam is on SQL Server 2000.  I was just wondering whether the online course that Microsoft currently have a available for free at https://www.microsoftelearning.com/sqlserver2005/default.aspx would be useful and applicable to SQL Server 2000, or whether it is sufficiently different product to make it confusing to use this as a learning resource.
Also if anyone can point me toward any webcasts for SQL Server that would be great. I listened to Fritz Onion's 15 part series when I studied  for my ASP.NET exam and would like to do something similar for SQL Server 2000 if any are available.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Performance

Nov 6, 2007

 Hi,I have a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise installed on Windows Server 2003, and developing web application for 500 clients. So I am interested will I have any performance issues if I put in 'Articles' table, data for all 500 clients and then filter it on client ID, or should I make 500 'Articles' tables for every client one with different name and then change sqldatasource for gridview depending on which client is working on it. I will have, beside 'Articles' table, another 10 tables, which means 5500 tables total, if I use second approach, on first I will have only 11 tables. So I am asking is it better to have more tables with less data, or less tables with more data. And what are pros and cons for both approach. Thanks a lot!

Microsoft Analysis Server 2005 And .NET 1.1

Mar 1, 2006

Hi,
Firstly, I had to post this query here since I did not find any other place relating to Microsoft SQL Analysis Server 2005 and that it is related to SQL server 2005.
I am using Microsoft SQL analysis server 2005 and .NET 1.1 for Asp.NET (C#)
I need to programmatically create Measures, Dimensions and Cubes using .Net 1.1 (C#) in an Asp.NET page, and then I need to access the measures, dimensions and cubes again from another Asp.Net page.
My querys are:
1. To create and manipulate the SQL Analysis server objects like Dimensions, Cubes what should I use? The documentation for Analysis server 2005 says we can use (Analysis Management Objects)AMO. but I am not sure if we can use it with .NET 1.1?
2. If AMO is possible, then what to use? There is one more technology we can use called as (Deciscion Suport Objects) DSO. but they are COM based and were for Analysis services 2000.
3. To query the data, what technology can I use? Microsoft says we can use ADOMD.NET. Microsoft also gives many other technologies that I think do similar work, like XMLA, ASSL.
Can somebody help me in this.
Also please do give me some links that have code samples for the same.

Thanks and Regards
Vijay R

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP2 Issue

Mar 7, 2007

An issue was recently discovered with SQL Server 2005 SP2 which might impact customers using cleanup tasks in Maintenance Plans and SQL Server Integration Services packages. The issue is described in detail here. We have created a General Distribution Release (GDR) #50000939 to address this issue which is available for download and we have included the GDR in a refresh of the SP2 installation package.

Customers who download SP2 starting Monday, March 5th, 2007 will not need to need any further action since the refreshed SP2 installation package includes the necessary GDR.

We recommend that everyone who has downloaded and installed SP2 prior to March 5th, 2007 apply the GDR either from Microsoft Update or by downloading it directly from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=85124. As described in the KB article, this is primarily for customers who use cleanup tasks in maintenance plans and SQL Server Integration Services packages.

Maintenance Plan Changes in SQL Server 2005 SP2
Users of SQL Server 2005 maintenance plans and SQL Server Integration Services should be aware of a change in SP2 that affects existing cleanup tasks until updated using SQL Server SP2 tools.

Who is affected?
You are affected if you use cleanup tasks in Maintenance Plans and SQL Server Integration Services packages, those plans include a History Cleanup Task or a Maintenance Cleanup Task, and you install SQL Server 2005 SP2. Users of SQL Server 2000 legacy maintenance plans are not affected.

What is the issue?
When SQL Server 2005 was released, cleanup intervals were measured in days, weeks, months, or years. In response to customer feedback, SQL Server 2005 SP2 includes significant enhancements to maintenance plans. These include an enhancement that lets users specify the cleanup interval in hours.
The change in intervals caused the initial release of SQL Server 2005 SP2 to misinterpret existing cleanup task intervals in maintenance plans and Integration Services packages. This can lead to the files being cleaned up earlier than intended. The issue is described in detail here.

What if I have already installed SP2 on my server?
If you downloaded SQL Server 2005 SP2 before Monday, March 5th, 2007, install a general distribution release (GDR) update for those SQL Server 2005 SP2 installations. The GDR is available at the Microsoft Download Center:

Critical Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2
After you install this GDR, you might have to restart your computer.
This GDR is also available through Microsoft Update, and will be applied automatically if you are using automatic updates. However, if you are using failover clustering, you must download and apply the GDR manually. Microsoft Update will not apply the GDR to failover cluster nodes.

What if I haven't yet installed SP2 on my server?
SQL Server 2005 RTM and SQL Server 2005 SP1 do not have this issue, and the current SQL Server 2005 SP2 download is updated to resolve this issue. If you have not installed the initial release of SP2, you can download the current release and install it.
Note: If you try to apply the SP2 refresh over a previous SP2 installation, no files are updated. Instead, use the general distribution release (GDR) update below.

Microsoft Access To SQL Server 2005

Mar 6, 2006

Hi,

I have a database in MSACCESS 2003 that is 680MB (after compacting) and contains 41 tables.

I tried to import these tables to SQL Server 2005 (express edition) using the :"upsizing wizard" provided in MSACCESS. The wizard works fine but all the tables are not being imported to SQL Server (only 19 tables are getting imported) and the size of the database in SQL Server (the ".mdf file") is 1.03 GB (I have tried using the "shrink" option also) . Further, when I try to open one of the tables (which has 625295 rows and 90 columns) , it takes lot of time to display all records.

So, my problem is do I need to set any options for any of these above issues, I tried to look for any information regarding this but was unsuccessful.

Any help on this will be very much helpful for me!

thanks

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio - Opening SQL-File From Explorer Does Not Connect Automaticly To Server/database

Apr 25, 2008

hello,

I have a question about opening files in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio.

In the old Query Analyzer from SQL 2000 I can open SQL Files via drag & drop (from explorer to QA) or open it with a double click in the explorer. Then the Files opened, if I had actual a connection to a server / database (QA is stared with one file and has a connection to Server/Datebase), with this connection.

Now in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Management Studio I'll be asked everytime for Server and have to get the database from the database list - it does not connect automaticly to server/database, that is actual connected (I have opened a file with the connection and a connected database in the object explorer).

Someone do not have this problem - but we found no option to set it up.

Any ideas?

thanks &
best regards,
Christian Kiedels
