Setup Issue: Unable To Install SQL Server 2005 Express On Windows 2003 Server SP2
Hello Experts,

I have been unable to install SQL Express 2005 Server on my Windows 2003 Server (with SP2 installed). I keep getting an error message saying that Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 is not installed.

Click here for image

So, I downloaded Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 v2 (WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe) but whenever I try to install it I get an error message saying that "the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying" and that there is no need to install the update and it stops there.

Click here for image

Is there a workaround to this? How can I get Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 installed? I tried going to the Windows Update site, I already have everything installed and I even started the Windows Installer service manually. Has anyone else experienced this?

How can I get SQL Server 2005 Express installed if not how can I install SQL Server 2000 on tihs machine? The only reason I am trying to install SQL Server 2005 is because wanted to try it so I uninstalled SQL Server 2000 now I can no longer install SQL Server 2000 again because it won't let me because of the SP2 patch.

Help! :(

JDBC Connection Fails After Windows Server 2003 SP2
In testing new patches, I tried Windows 2003 Server SP2 and our JDBC connections stopped working. I uninstalled SP2 and they started working again. Anyone know where the problem is?

I have already read pages of documentation, but I will keep looking. Please let me know if you know the setting that needs to be changed. I'm assuming it is a new "security enhancement" but I'm just not sure exactly where.

Thanks in advance.

SQL Server 2000 Don´t Install In Windows 2003
I have a problem installing SQL Server 2000 standard edition in a Windows 2003 Server , when I try to setup there is a message saying :
" You cannot install SQL server 2000 sp 2 and below in this operating system " and the installation stops .

I have tried to run sp3 before the installation but obviously It doesn´t work . I think the solution is something like updating the setup program to make it work in Windows 2003 Server , when I see the system requirements on the box it says that I can install SQL server 2000 in w2003 .

what can I do ?

thanks a lot for your help .

Cannot Install SQL 2005 On Windows Server 2003
I'm unable to successfully install SQL 2005 on Windows Server 2003. Everything installs correctly except 'SQLXML4', and after installation, there's no Management Studio, unless I then install SQL Express Management Studio.

Installation details: Successfully installs 'Native Client' and the 'Support Files'. The 'System Configuration Check' passes everything. Installed 'Database Services', 'Integration Services', 'Client Components' (except for the 2 development tools), and 'Books Online'. Created the default instance (there were no other instances). Set it to run as 'Local System'. Set only the 'SQL Server' service to start after setup. Specified 'Mixed Mode'.

Then the installation proceeds, and everything looks good until SQLXML4 fails. Soon after, a window pops up saying "Setup is preparing to continue with the installation". Nothing happens till I click 'OK', and then 'Workstation Components' shows as having failed. Then the installation finishes normally. However there's no Management Studio, except that I then installed the SQL Express Management Studio, which appears to work fine.

I tried uninstalling, and installing again, but got the same results.

How can I get this to install correctly?

Thank you.

There were no previous SQL versions or programs installed when I check the "Add/Remove" programs.

Sql Express And Windows Server 2003 SBS
I have installed sqlexpress on windows server 2003 sbs. When the server reboots the sql server service manager starts but does not start any services. In the Server pull down box I have the following "server" and "serversqlexpress" it defaults to server and therefore for services pull down is blank. When I manually change the Server pull down to "serversqlexpress" then I am able to start the services. Is there a way to have it default to "serversqlexpress".

SQL Server And Express Install Fails
I have a server version of SQL Server, but I need a local SQL Server Express version as well for dev.

When I install express and the full set of SQL Server management tools, I can see my Express instance in configuration manager, but Management Studio says the instance is broken. I have tried both SA and windows authentication. I turned on all the protocols in both server and client, but no luck.

The error returned is Error 26 Error locating server instance specified, but I am selecting the instance from the dropdown box, so it is not a typo. I have tried quite a few variations with no success.

The install is on XP-pro

Thanks,

Michael

SQL Server Express Fails To Install
I'm experiencing a problem installing SQL Server Express 2005. I thought I had the same problem as Tom from a recent thread but his error file is quite different from mine. The Visual Basic Express
package properly installed everything except SQL Server. I've run
it many times, but the service fails
to start. I also downloaded the separate installation package for
SQL Server Express and ran it several times, which also failed.
It gets to a point where the services are installed, but when I try to
manually start the SQL service it says that the service started and
then stopped. The event
viewer shows this error:

Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition -- Error 29503. The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
The error is (1067) The process terminated unexpectedly.

Sql Server 2005 Express Backup On Windows 2003 Server
I note that after installing sql server 2005 express onto a Windows 2003 server from a Windows XP pro computer I lose the ability to backup, specifically, the microsoft sql studio express lost or is missing the function (management -> Management plans) which allows for backups to be run at specified times.

How can I proceed to backup my SQL server 2005 express database ?

Thanks,

David

MSDTC Fails On Windows 2003 But Security Has Been Reset So It's Not That.
I am running SQL Server 2000 (clustered server) with Windows 2003. For some reason MSDTC is failing on distributed transactions. I can run code that begins and commits a transaction from query analyzer, or run a stored procedure from Query Analyzer with the same code in it and both work great, but if I call the stored procedure from a DTS job, then the job fails with the following error:

DTSStep_DTSExecuteSQLTask_1, Error = -2147217900 (80040E14) Error string: The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'MSDASQL' was unable to begin a distributed transaction. Error source: ...... Error string: OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'MSDASQL' ITransactionJoin::JoinTransaction returned 0x8004d00a]. Error source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Serve. The step failed.

Any help would be appreciated!

SQL Server Express 2005 Fails To Install
I am trying to install MS SQL Server Express but the installation always fails. I have copied the summary log below and can provide more details if you require. Web Developer and C# Express install OK.

I have been trying to install this for around 2 weeks now with no luck ... I even had the PC formatted and rebuilt but the install still fails. If it installed and worked before, i cannot understand why it doesn't work now. The summary log is provided below:

============
The file :"C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGFilesSQLSetup0001_MYSERVER_.NET Framework 2.0.log" does not exist.

What I've tried so far:
1. Using Add/Remove Programs, uninstall the following:
  A. Microsoft SQL Server Native Client
  B. Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English)
  C. Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer
  D. Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 (based on a post elsewhere that this resolved someone else problem)
2. Verified that the following Registry Keys were removed:
  A. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMSSQLServer
  B. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server
  C. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Native Client
(If they were not, I deleted them manually.)

When I was asked to help, the SSE installation had already been attempted 4 times. Part of their resolution attempts had been to install .NET 3.0, but I have not yet re-installed that.
It appears that .NET is still the culprit. Here is some information on the system:

SQL Express Server Fails To Install During Extraction

I've tried downloading SQL Server Express several times and installing. Every time it fails during extraction. I have a Vista machine with .NET Framework 3.0 already installed. I'm using MS Expression Web, MS Access, and have also downloaded and installed MS Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition. Why can't I even get SQL Server Express to extract from the downloaded file?

?? SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 Install Fails On Native Client ??
Hello all,

I'm trying to install "SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2" on a newly installed XP Pro SP2 machine. I downloaded "SQLEXPR32.EXE" (38,220,656 bytes) from the Microsoft site.

At the beginning of the setup the installation program scans my system -- no problems or warnings. Everything looks fine and ready to go.

During installation I uncheck, "Hide advanced configuration options" simply because I want to change the default instance name. Aside from changing the default instance name I make no other changes to the default installation configuration.

The installation begins but when it tries to comes to the "SQL Native Client" portion of the installation I get the following error dialog message:

"An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.msi'."

Below I've included the setup log file of the SQL Native Client portion of the setup. I've looked through the log file but didn't see anything obviously wrong until the error occurs toward the end.

Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this to happen? I've install SSE many times in the past with no problems.

Thanks

SQL Server 2005 Express - Setting Sa Password Fails During Install
During an install of SQL Server 2005 Express setting the sa password does not work consistently. The install is being run as administrator and I am using an .ini file to pass the settings,

SECURITYMODE=SQL
ADDLOCAL=ALL
SQLBROWSERAUTOSTART=1
SQLAUTOSTART=1
INSTANCENAME=DBSERVER
SAPWD=Westtech#1

and while most times it works correctly, occasionally, maybe 4 out of 10 times it fails to set the password and I have been unable to find any warnings or errors in the logs it generates.

We are coming up on release and this is causing us some real problems. Does anyone have any ideas, something I could look at?

Thank you,

Install Analysis Services 2000 On Windows 2003 Pdc
i'm running windows 2003 enterprise with sp1. and i'm trying to install sql server 2000 enterprise and analysis services 2000 enterprise.
this is more of a dev system, but it's giving me this error msg when i try to install sp3a for analysis services: "An error occurred during the move data process: -132"

i had both sql server and analysis services installed on the pdc before, and i then upgraded to sp3a.
but this time, i can only installed sql server with sp3a, but it wont take the upgrade for analysis services

no other errors show up in the event viewer on the local system...

can someone give me some help on this? thanks

nevermind, i got it. it's somekinda bug in the installer i guess. had to delete the file msmdsrv.exe in the bin folder for analysis services. the service pack then installed a new version, and it seems to work now :-)

Cannot Install SQL Server 2005 On A Windows 2003 Cluster In Virtual Server 2005
I
am trying to install SQL 2005 in a 2-node virtual Windows 2003 cluster. I set
the cluster up through Virtual Server 2005 with 2 virtual nodes and one
virtual domain. The nodes can connect to each other as well as the
physical machine. When I try to install a fresh copy of SQL 2005 on my
cluster, I get an error every time. The
error stops the installation while checking system configuration after
installing prerequisites. The log file entry is as follows:

Can't Install IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server On Windows 2003 X64 Storage Server, How Can I Fix The Pkg?
I am a Windows developer for the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Server (TSMS) product.
Our product installation is built with InstallShield and uses the Windows Installer.

On a new installation of Windows 2003 x64 Storage Server R2, at a customer's site, the TSMS product fails to install.
The install of the OS has version 3.01.400.3959 of the Windows Installer and I see no newer version that installs.

Part of our product is 32 bit (console) and another part is x64 (server).
When installing I can see that the install's default is being redirected/reset to C:Program Files (x86)TivoliTSM after it is explicitly set by a custom action to ..Program Files.. . I further observe that our custom actions to write 64 bit registry entries are being refused.

    REGSAM samMask = KEY_ALL_ACCESS;
    if ( regIsWow64Process () ) samMask = samMask | KEY_WOW64_64KEY;

                              szSubkey,
                              0L,
                              NULL,
                              REG_OPTION_NON_VOLATILE,
                              samMask,
                              NULL,
                              hKey,
                              &dw ) ;
The above fails to create the key.

We have tried four versions of our TSMS spanning many changes but the install acts the same.
This does not happen on any other Windows OS we test on but we do not test on Windows 2003 Storage Server R2 being that it is an OEM product. We did test on Windows server 2003 R2 x64 and do not see this problem.

Do you have any suggestions on how to tackle this problem?
I have full installation traces but can only see that the registry work is being refused. I can't see why.

Unattended Re-install Of SQL Server 2005 Express Fails To Re-create Database!
Hi,

I have a script that performs an unattended installation of SQL Server and works fine.

However, if I un-install via the control panel all the files are removed apart from the databases that are created by me when SQl server was installed. This is good and ensures data is not deleted.

The files left over are in the following directory:
    C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData
and contains:
    MyDatabase.mdf
    MyDatabase_log.LDF

The problem I have is after performing the re-installtion of SQL server (unattended) I am unable to create a new database with the same name (in this instance called "myDatabase").

The actual files are physically there so this is the reason a new database with the same name cannot be creacted.

Again this is ok again because it ensures I cannot overwrite existing data. However I am unable to re-attach this database to SQl server so I can continue to use it!

The question is:

How do I make this database usable again after an unattended install? Is there a parameter I am missing?

Below are the commands I use that are passed to the installation of SQL Server as command line parameters:

#define SQL_SILENT                    "-q /passive /norebootchk /qn reboot=ReallySuppress"
#define SQL_USERNAME             "username=MyUserName"
#define SQL_COMPANYNAME      "companyname=MyCompanyName"
#define SQL_ADDLOCAL               "addlocal=ALL"
#define SQL_DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS   "disablenetworkprotocols=0"
#define SQL_INSTANCENAME       "instancename=MSSQLSERVER"
#define SQL_SQLAUTOSTART       "SQLAUTOSTART=1"
#define SQL_SECURITYMODE       "SECURITYMODE=SQL"
#define SQL_SAPWD                     "SAPWD=#Password#"
#define SQL_SAVESYSDB             "1"
#define SQL_USESYSDB               ""
#define SQL_INSTALLSQLDIR         ""
#define SQL_INSTALLDATADIR       ""

#define SQL_PARAMETERS    SQL_SILENT + " " + SQL_USERNAME + " " + SQL_COMPANYNAME + " " + SQL_ADDLOCAL + " " + SQL_DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS + " " + SQL_INSTANCENAME + " " + SQL_USESYSDB + " " + SQL_INSTALLSQLDIR + " " + SQL_INSTALLDATADIR + " " + SQL_SAVESYSDB + " " + SQL_SQLAUTOSTART + " " + SQL_SECURITYMODE + " " + SQL_SAPWD

The last four commands I have played around with but for some reason SQL Server service will not start when these are used! (This is a different issue though!).

Any advice would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks

Paul

SQL Server 2005 Express Adv. SP2 Setup Fails To Install SQL Server Database Serices Only.
I run setup using GUI. It upgrades all components of the existing installation w/out any problems except the last component. That is, it proceeds with the installation of SQL Server Database Serices and at the end fails to shut down the SQL Server and aborts the installation reporting the following:

"Service 'Computer_NameSQLEXPRESS' could not be stopped. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to stop system services. The error code is (16386)".

I am running Windows XP SP2 with both .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.0 installed on it. I am logged in as a system administrator.

The most puzzling to me things are:

- the setup starts AND STOPS w/out any problems SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server VSS Writer (thus finding enough privileges for both).

- the setup starts the SQL Server w/out any problems (thus it finds enough privileges to START A SYSTEM SERVICE) and then fails as described above 'lucking privileges".

During installation before failing the setup displays following:

"Run as Normal User. RANU instance Shutdwon in progress: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS". The "normal user" puzzles me too, unless the SQL Server itself is meant here.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can provide the installation log file as well.

Thanks.

Problem While Installing SQL Server 2005 Express Edition On Windows 2000 PRO SP4...Can't Install!!!
Hi everyone...

I'm facing a problem while installing the SQL Server 2005 Express on Windows 2000 Pro with SP4.

After finishing the downloading from Microsoft I start the installation and things seems to go ok but during Extracting Files step a message appears "SQL Server Setup unexpectedly failed. For more information, review the setup summary log file in %Program Files%Microsoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapLOGSummary.txt" and it terminates the installation.

I located the log file and open it but can't understand the problem..I copy the text and paste it here for anyone who can understand it.Please, it is very importand for me to work with SQL Server for my project. Any advice or information or anything else???

Thank you all,

Steps To Install SQL Server Express (&& Reporting Serivces) On 64 Bit Windows Vista Ultimate
Steps to install SSX (& Reporting Serivces) on 64 bit Windows Vista Ultimate

I struggled quite a bit over the past few days to complete this install. The sequence of steps is less obvious than those for Windows XP Pro on a 32 bit machine.

I recorded all the steps in one place in cookbook style for non-technical (but database capable) users like myself. I have referenced appropriate other postings and sources for detail steps. These are steps I found useful, you may be in a different situation.

My environment is as follows:
-New HP dv9000 w/ 2GHz and 2GB memory
-Factory installed Windows Vista Ultimate. Note this includes .NET Framework 2.0 so I did not have to deal with installing that.
-I have no extant databases or SQL Server that I am trying to convert or upgrade!

Setup Steps Before Install:
1) Turn off User Account Control.
At present, I am a one-user operation with close control over my system and there seemed to be issues with getting reporting services set up right with UAC. I may come back and modify this step later on and certainly would change this for any releasable systems.

1a)Go to Control Panel Home --> User Accounts --> Turn User Account Control on or off.
  1b)Unselect Use User Acount Control.
2)Set up your IIS 7.0 for Reporting Services.
IIS 7.0 has IIS 6.0 Compatibility features turned off out of the box. You will turn them on with this step. This is needed for both Reporting services and to enable the Adminscripts that are used in Step 3 below.

2a) Use the Control Panel --> Programs --> Turn Windows features on and off function.
This is quite nicely desribed with screen shots at:
http://www.iis.net/default.aspx?tabid=2&subtabid=25&i=957
These steps worked for me although they are labeled Vista Beta 2.

3)Set up your 64 bit machine to run 32 bit ASP.NET
This capability is needed to make sure you pass the System Configuration Check for Reporting Services. I don't know the full implications of this step and wonder if it might eventually bite me if I have to flip-flop between 32 and 64 bit ASP.NET or have them both run at the same time.

3a) Open a command line window by:
Start --> Accessories -- Cmd Prompt
3b) In this window type:
cscript %SystemDrive%inetpubAdminScriptsadsutil.vbs set w3svc/AppPools/Enable32bitAppOnWin64 1

At some point, you may wish to go back to 64 bit. For that, see the posting by MihaelaE as an Answer in the SQL Server Reporting Services Forum under a thread started by fagster on 3/8/2007.

Now to actually install SQL Server.

1) Download the 64 bit SSX.
This step fooled me for a while as the 64-bit downloads are 'below the fold' on the web page.

1a) Go to the SSX download page:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/

1b) Scroll down the page and below Step 5, Register, you will see this text which takes you to the download you want:
"* For the 64-bit install of SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, click here."
  1c) Follow the "click here" to get the download.

2) Install the package from step 1c and you will get SQL Server Express.

2a) The install may fail and complain about not finding a valid SQL Server Native Client Install, sqlncli_x64.msi. You will have to extract the files manually and then run the sqlncli_64.msi package by itself. Then you can go back to step 2 and should be successful.
To do this, see post of Mike Wachal on 4/5/2007 to SQL Server Express Forum, titled "Cannot Install SQL Server Express on Vista Ultimate -- cannot find MS SQL Server Native Client".

3) Now add in the SQL Server Management Studio Express 64 bit version.

3a) Go to the SSX download page:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/

3b) Scroll down the page and below Step 5, Register you will see this text which takes you to the download you want:
"* For the 64-bit install of SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express, click here."

3c) Follow the "click here" to get the download.

4) Now add the SQL Server Reporting Services.

4a) Go to the SSX download page:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/

4b) Scroll to Step 3 Download and Install (in the middle of the page) and download SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2.
  4c) Install, but at the Feature Selection screen, disable all components EXCEPT Reporting Services. You already have the other components installed.
  4d) In the install, you will get a screen called "Report Server Installation Options". Go ahead and select the "Install but do not configure the server" radio button.

5) Go ahead and configure SQL Server Reporting Services.
I'm not highly skilled in this area so I recommend the SQL Server Express Video "Learning Video 10: Getting Started with Reporting Services". This is found at: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/learning/default.aspx
I found this video to be cogent and useful.

That's what it took me to get SQL Server Express installed with reporting services on a 64 bit Vista Ultimate system. Sorry if this is so long but I wanted to cover all the steps that hung me up.

To forum moderators: If I have any errors that will lead people astray, I'm more than happy to correct them.

This posting is "AS IS" with no warrantees and caveat emptor.
