How Can I Create A One-to-one Relationship In A SQL Server Management Studio Express Relationship Diagram?

How can I create a one-to-one relationship in a SQL Server Management Studio Express Relationship diagram?

For example:
I have 2 tables, tbl1 and tbl2.

tbl1 has the following columns:
id {uniqueidentifier} as PK
name {nvarchar(50)}

tbl2 has the following columns:
id {uniqueidentifier} as PK
name {nvarchar(50)}
tbl1_id {uniqueidentifier} as FK linked to tbl1.id

If I drag and drop the tbl1.id column to tbl2 I end up with a one-to-many relationship. How do I create a one-to-one relationship instead?

Relationship Management In SQL 2005 Express Edition
Hello everybody,
I'm creating a database for my new web site. This database has around 9 tables and I would like to create the relationships for its tables. I know that in MS Access I can visually create the relationships, but after a log research about relationship management in SQL 2005 express edition, I'm not sure if this is possible in this environment.
So, if I'm not able to visualy manage my relationships, do I have to create them by using only SQL?
Thanks,

Eduardo

Hi there, I just set up my AppData and i'm trying to connect the Membership to a tbl_Profile that i created.I notice there's an application_id and a user_id which are uniqueidentifiers. I've been trying create a relationship to tbl_Profile's user_id column but it won't let me saying it's not compatible. Am i suppose to set tbl_Profile's user_id column to int or uniqueidentifier? I've tried both and it won't let me... THanks!

Entity Relationship Diagram
I have VS 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express installed and I created 4 tables and setup the primary and foreign keys and can view the individual foreign key relationships by right clicking on the foreign key.

Is there a way to view a table relationship diagram (fields with primary and foreign keys), such as Access provides. Does VS 2005 or SQL Server 2005 have that capability?

Thanks

Entity Relationship diagram

can anyone help me with my diagram pleasee..i have been banging my head on it for weeks.
i have 6 entities Student, Course, Module, Attendance, and Result

Polato Student Record System
"The Polato university administration has decided to computerise their student record system. The system must be able to automatically print a new ID card for students on their admission and after completion of each academic year. The card should have the student’s name, number of years and the message welcome to 1st, 2nd or final year.
In a bid to curb the rate of incompletion, the system should also be able to record attendance of students to any class. The system should be able to automatically send out a warning to any student that misses any two lectures for the first time. (Of course the student should come up with a very good reason for missing the lectures or else he/she will be removed from the module). Missing three or more lectures leads to automatic withdrawal from the module involved. A student will receive notice from the system, right after missing the second lecture.
The system also must be able to calculate each student’s results for that semester only showing details of all modules taken. You should use the simple formula; the total of all the modules taken, divided by the number of modules"

Create Package In SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Our server currently has the following components installed for SQL Server 2005: 1. SQL Server Management Studio Express and 2. Configuration Tools (SQL Server Configuration Manager, SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting, and SQL Server Service Area Configuration).

Is there a way to setup a package using the software currently installed (if not, what needs to be installed in order to setup a package)?

I'm looking to schedule running an executible, it was fairly easy with SQL Server 2000 (using DTS), but I'm unsure how to set this up using the software we currently have installed.

How To Use The Create Relationship Function At MS SQL Server
hi all, For those who will celebrate the chinese new year, Gong Xi Fa Cai!!!

I now using microsoft SQL server to manage my database.

To manage the database, I have go through the SQL Server Enterprise Manager
To create my database.

Now I am the stage create the relationship for my relations.

So when I drag the foreign key from one relation to primary key at another
relation, vice versa, it will pop up the 'Create Relationship' form.

What I can saw is there are three check boxes. one check boxes have 2 sub check boxes.
Quote: Checkbox 1 - [Check existing data on creation]
Checkbox 2 - [Enforce relationship for replication]
Checkbox 3 - [Enforce relationship for INSERTs and UPDATEs]
Checkbox 3.1 - [Cascade Update Related Fields]
Checkbox 3.2 - [Cascade Delete Related Records]

Usually the Checkbox 1, 2, 3 had been checked.
but the check box 3.1 and 3.2 is display as uncheck by default.

Another question is when I linked up the relationship between two of the relations will appear
a asterisk(*) beside the relation's name. Why?

But I not very understand to the check boxes means and the asterisk.
Can someone give me some guidelines!!Thanks

Thanks in billions....

How Do I Create A Stored Procedure In SQL Server Management Studio Express?
I have wrriten many stored procedures in the past without issue, but this is my first time using SQL Server Management Studio Express. I am having trouble creating a new stored procedure. Here is what's happening:
I am opening my database, right clicking on "Stored Procedures" and selecting "New Stored Procedure". A new window opens with a template for creating a stored procedure. The window is called: "SQLEXPRESS.DBName - sqlquery1.sql". I then type up my stored procedure without an issue.
However, when I go to save the stored procedure it wants to save it as a separate file in a projects folder. It does not become part of the DB (as far as I can tell).
When I used to use Enterprise Manager (not an option anymore) this never happened.
I'm sure I'm doing something dumb. Can someone enlighten me.
Thanks,Chris

Failing To Create Relationship (SQL Server Claims Table Lacks PK For Some Reason ?)

Note thatI have never clicked before on the diagrams child of thedatabase; this was entirely experimental."Primary key or UNIQUE constraint must be defined fortable 'xxx' before it can participate in a relationship."http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...cantbepktbl.asp1) My table already had a primary key; why is MS SQL Server apparentlyclaiming otherwise ? (I don't think I can define a second primary keyon the same table. I could perhaps define an additional unique indexon top of the primary key, but, I'm not sure.)2) What does it mean: table '<0s>' ? That is, what does 0s mean ?

Entity Relationship Management Idea
Please let me know what you think of this scheme I have come up with(not to imply that noone else has before me) for managingrelationships.I have created an entities table with Individual and Organizationalsubtypes. I need to be able to relate them to eachother (e.g., someare customers of or suppliers to others, some have employer/employeerelationships,...). I know this is not an uncommon thing to do.So, I have created relationship pairs with left and right values. Thepairs are things like employee/employer, customer/vendor,contractor/client,... Then I can create relationships that will letme look in two directions. For example, if I say entity1 has anemployee/employer relationship with entity 2, that means that entity1is an employee of entity2 and entity2 is an employer of entity1.Entities (This is just a view of the combined ind/org subtypes tables)EntityID EntityName1 Doe, John2 MyCorp, Inc.3 Smith, Jane4 AnotherCorp, Inc.RelationshipTypesRelTypeID RelLValue RelRValue1 Employee Employer2 Customer Vendor3 Client ContractorRelationshipsRelTypeID LEntityID REntityID1 1 24 2 22 3 3Then I can query for everyone that has a relationship with a specificentity by using:SELECT Entities.EntityName, RelationshipTypes.RelLValue ASRelationship FROM RelationshipsLEFT JOIN Entities ON Entities.EntityID = Relationships.LEntityIDLEFT JOIN RelationshipTypesON Relationships.RelTypeID =RelationshipTypes.RelTypeIDWHERE REntityID = 2UNIONSELECT Entities.EntityName, RelationshipTypes.RelRValue ASRelationship FROM RelationshipsLEFT JOIN Entities ON Entities.EntityID = Relationships.REntityIDLEFT JOIN RelationshipTypesON Relationships.RelTypeID =RelationshipTypes.RelTypeIDWHERE LEntityID = 2Returns:EntityName Relationship (to EntityID = 2)Doe, John EmployeeSmith, Jane ContractorAnotherCorp, Inc. Best Way To Create The Relationship
Hi - SQL beginer here....

SQL2005

I have a table dbo.server

Compid - 1
Name PK - Server1
Make - HP
etc...

I have just created a new table dbo.ProcessorInfo with the following columns:

Name
BrandName
ProcessorCoreCount
etc....

This table will have more than 1 record for each name:

Server1 Intel 2
Server1 Intel 2
Server2 Intel 1
Server2 Intel 1

and so on.

What is the best way to relate the name in dbo.server and name in dbo.ProcessorInfo so this is a one to many? Obviously I can't set the name column as a PK as I have more than 1 record of the same value in it.

Help much appreciated!

How Do I Create A Relationship In DB Diagrammer ?

I seem to have to select a Table to enable the Create Relationship option, and then when I 'Add' it creates a recursive Relationship to that Table.

I guess it must be possible to do what I am trying to do ?

I'd appreciate any advice.

Unable To Create Relationship FK
Hi.
I get this error when i try to create a relationship in a db diagram (sql 2005)
"'tblActivedir' table saved successfully

- Unable to create relationship 'FK_tblClient_tblActivedir1'.
Introducing FOREIGN KEY constraint 'FK_tblClient_tblActivedir1' on table 'tblClient' may cause cycles or multiple cascade paths. Specify ON DELETE NO ACTION or ON UPDATE NO ACTION, or modify other FOREIGN KEY constraints.
Could not create constraint. See previous errors."

What i have is 2 tables.
1 named client
1 named activedir

In the client table the columns i want to bind with activedirtable are FR1 and DC1
I want to bind them in the ID of the activedir table (both, in different fk relationships) so that they get the id of activedir.
Fr1 has an fk relationship with activedir (pk is activedir' id)
and DC1 exactly the same in another fk.
So i want both columns to comunicate with activedir.
If p.e. activedir has 3 elements (a,b,c) when i delete element a then werever FR1 or DC1 have this element(binded to it's id) then the element will also be deleted (id of the element) from both FR1 and DC1
I don't want to set Delete and Update action to none because i want the element changed or deleted from activedir, to do the same on Fr1 or DC1 or both.
Any help?
Thanks.

How To Create A Datagrid For Two No Relationship Tables

For Table B, there are also 3 columns as ID, Qty, BPoints. There is no internal relationship for these two tables. But there may be same ID inside A and B for some records. Now I want to create a datagrid for displaying the information as :

ID, Sum(A.APoints1 + A.APoints2) - Sum(B.Qty * B.BPoints) WHERE A.ID = B.ID

Please Notice that I can't use directly SQL script as following from table A and table B because there is no relationship for Table A and Table B, otherwise the recult set would be wrong:

Select A.ID, Sum(A.APoints1 + A.APoints2) - Sum(B.Qty * B.BPoints) WHERE A.ID = B.ID group by A.ID

May I know is there solution for it?

Create Table With Recursive Relationship
I am fairly new to SQL and I am currently trying to createa SQL table (using Microsoft SQL) that has a recursiverelationship, let me try to explain:I have a piece of Data let's call it "Item" wich may again contain onemore "Items". Now how would I design a set of SQL Tables that arecapable of storing this information?I tried the following two approaches:1.) create a Table "Item" with Column "ItemID" as primary key, somecolums for the Data an Item can store and a Column "ParentItemID". Iset a foreign key for ParentItemID wich links to the primarykey"ItemID" of the same table.2.) create separate Table "Item_ParentItem" that storesItemID-ParentItemID-pairs. Each column has a foreign key linked toprimary key of the "Item" Column "ItemID".In both approaches when I try to delete an Item I get an Exceptionsaying that the DELETE command could not be executed because itviolates a COLUMN REFERENCE constraint. The goal behind these FK_PKrelations is is that when an Item gets deleted, all childItems shouldautomatically be deleted recursively.How is this "standard-problem" usually solved in sql? Or do I inned toimplement the recursive deletion myself using storedprocedures or something ?

Server Express, Management Studio Express, Visual Studio Standard, And An ASP.NET Page....
I believe I'm missing something as far as my configuration goes...I'm new to working with SQL server and the databinding I'm trying to do.

I have an ASP.NET page that has a radio button list box which I have databound to a database served up by SQL Express

I'm having a lot of problems with connections...

I was going to enumerate the behavior under each configuration (local only, remote tcp/ip only, remote pipes only, remote both), but I've realized that it is just flaky. Sometimes I can connect to the db with SQL Studio express, sometimes not. Sometimes I can add new tables and edit tables, sometimes not. Sometimes I can create a new connection when trying to databind from within Visual Studio, and sometimes not (sometimes I can't even connect, other times, I can connect initially but when I build a query through the designer it then has problems). Lastly, sometimes the ASP.NET page works correctly and sometimes not.

This all seems to be mostly independent of how I configure SQL Server as far as what kinds of connections are allowed. I thought there was a pattern, but as I tested it more rigorously I found there wasn't.

What I would like to do is be connected to the same DB with Visual Studio and SQL Studio, edit the DB as I wish, databind to it, and test my ASP.NET page, all without needing to jump through a bunch of hoops (although right now I wouldn't even know what those hoops are...it's just a shot in the dark as to what will work).

It's all quite maddening and any help would be appreciated.

Table Relationship In VB Express
I
have 3 tables I am trying to relate for a music player. I was
following the example in the msdn however, my relationships do not seem
right. Here are tables i want to relate:

Table 1:
ArtistID
ArtistName:

Table 2:
RecordingID
RecordingName
ArtistID

Table 3:
TrackID
TrackName
TrackNumber
TrackLocation
RecordingID

So
the main idea here is that the foreign keys are recordingId and
artistID. So what i did is created the 3 tables and then make a
diagram to create the relationships. I then was reading this post:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=219696&SiteID=1

What
i want to do is use 2 different text boxes lets say and as i move from
the records in the Record_table (2) the corresponding artist will
change with it. However in the dataset the relationship looks like
this:
Artist -> Recording -> Track.... inorder for me to get
this relationship to work correctly i have to change all the
relationships in the dataset diagram. This way the dataset would look
like this: Track -> Recording ->Artist. This way i can use the
2 bindings to reference each other as stated in the link above. why
doesnt the relationship of the database know this already? why do i
have to change the relationship in the datasets.

But, when I made restore from SQL Server 2000 backed up file I get next message:

"Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. May someone excplain what exactly I have to do?

1. This particular user has admin permissions of this DB.

2. What does it mean "add the database digram support objects"?

SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???
When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?

The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

How To Configure SQL Server Management Studio Express To Allow Doing Non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 From VB 2005 Express?

The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the
      following:   Select Computer
                      The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer.
                      Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer
                                                                       O Remote computer
                       Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?
(2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]",
    I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connections", Select a component and then configure its services and connections: |-| SQLEXPRESS
                                          |-| Database Engine
                                                    Service
                                I picked =>   Remote Connection
       On the right-hand side, there are: O Local connections only
                                                            O Local and remorte connections
                                                                   O Using TCP/IP
                                                                   O Using named pipes only
                                                                   O Using both TCP/IP and named pipes
                        Should I choose O Local and remorte connections and O Using named pipes only?

Please help and tell me what options I should choose in (1) and (2).

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

Import Existing Database Into SQL SERVER EXPRESS Management Studio Express

Hi,

I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum.
Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it.
I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list.
As this is the express version, is there anyway of importing the existing SQL SERVER dbs that i have to the management studio so i can manage them from there?

Regards,

Shuja.

Import Csv Data To Dbo.Tables Via CREATE TABLE && BUKL INSERT:How To Designate The Primary-Foreign Keys && Set Up Relationship?
Hi all,

I use the following 3 sets of sql code in SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to import the csv data/files to 3 dbo.Tables via CREATE TABLE & BUKL INSERT operations:

-- ImportCSVprojects.sql --

USE ChemDatabase

GO

CREATE TABLE Projects

(

ProjectID int,

ProjectName nvarchar(25),

LabName nvarchar(25)

);

BULK INSERT dbo.Projects

FROM 'c:myfileProjects.csv'

WITH

(

FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',

ROWTERMINATOR = ''

)

GO
=======================================
-- ImportCSVsamples.sql --

USE ChemDatabase

GO

CREATE TABLE Samples

(

SampleID int,

SampleName nvarchar(25),

Matrix nvarchar(25),

SampleType nvarchar(25),

ChemGroup nvarchar(25),

ProjectID int

);

BULK INSERT dbo.Samples

FROM 'c:myfileSamples.csv'

WITH

(

FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',

ROWTERMINATOR = ''

)

GO
=========================================
-- ImportCSVtestResult.sql --

USE ChemDatabase

GO

CREATE TABLE TestResults

(

AnalyteID int,

AnalyteName nvarchar(25),

Result decimal(9,3),

UnitForConc nvarchar(25),

SampleID int

);

BULK INSERT dbo.TestResults

FROM 'c:myfileLabTests.csv'

WITH

(

FIELDTERMINATOR = ',',

ROWTERMINATOR = ''

)

GO

========================================
The 3 csv files were successfully imported into the ChemDatabase of my SSMSE.

2 questions to ask:
(1) How can I designate the Primary and Foreign Keys to these 3 dbo Tables?
      Should I do this "designate" thing after the 3 dbo Tables are done or during the "Importing" period?
(2) How can I set up the relationships among these 3 dbo Tables?

Please help and advise.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

Can't Connect To SQL 2005 Express With SQL Server Management Studio Express
I've seen the following error posted when people try to connect to their server via their applications but didn't see anyone having problems when trying to connect with SQL Server Management Studio Express. Am I missing something here? This is the error:<<An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)(Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)>>The server is not remote so I don't see why I need to enable remote connection. I am also using the default connection settings.
