How To Install Management Studio Express 2005 After VS2008 On Server 2008?
Ok so here's what happened:
Installed Server 2008 (64bit)
Installed VS2008 (+SQL 2005 Express, by default)
I've always installed SQL 2005 Dev (including the SQL Management Studio) before installing VS. Now I am trying to install just the management studio on this machine without success.
I tried installing the SQL workstation tools package from the SQL 2005 DVD but the installer detects the tools installed by SQL express (osql, etc.., but no management studio GUI) and the installer refuses to install anything else. I also tried downloading the separate installer for SQL management studio but it doesn't like something also: first thing the installer does is display this mesage:
"Installation of this product failed because it is not supported on this operating system For more information on supported configurations, see the product documentation."
Any way to do this without having to reinstall VS?
Thanks.

SQL Server Express 2008 - Missing Client Tools / Management Studio / Profiler
I downloaded and performed a full install of SQL Server Express 2008 Nov CTP. It was installed on a fresh installation of Windows Vista Enterprise x64. During setup, I checked the 'Client Tools' box which has the description: "Includes management and development tools: SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Server Configuration Manager, SQL Server Profiler, and Database Engine Tuning Advisor" The installation ran fine with no errors. Download Of Sql Server Management Studio Express For Sql Server 2008
I just upgraded my Sql Server to 2008 and I was hoping that the link found in this page would provide the download to SSMSE for Sql Server 2008, but it redirects me to 2005 version. I don't any instances running with Sql Server 2005 that I could access through SSMSE 2005, so I can't use it. Does anyone have the link for download to SSMSE 2008? Or should I downgrade? And if, how can I downgrade? Thank you very much, sorry by my misspellings.

I'm trying to upgrade my management studio to the full version, I uninstalled Express edition and started the install for the full version, but I get an error stating "you cannot install this component because it is already installed". How Can I Re-install The Northwind Database In SQL Server Management Studio Express?Use SqlDataSet && The .Fill Method Properly?
Hi all, In my VB 2005 Express, I created a Windowds Form application "shcDataSet" that used 1 SqlConnection, 1 SqlDataSet and 3 SqlDataAdapters associated with the Northwind Database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express. The SqlConnection had "User Instance" in the following ConnectionString: Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataorthwnd.mdf";Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True. The 3 SqlDataAdapters were for the Northwind files "Customers", "Orders" and "Order Details" used in the SQLDataSet "AllOrders" with a AllOrders.xsd file. I ran the "shcDataSet" applicatyion and it worked fine. After the execution of "shcDataSet", I checked the Northwind database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express and clicked on "+" in front of Northwind database-I did not see any file showed up and I got the following error message: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.SmoEnum) Additional information: one or more files do not match the primary file of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupted and should be restored from a backup. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:5173). If I executed the "shcDataSet" application again, I got a new error: SqlException was unhandled - Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'myPC##myName' ------->daCustomers.Fill(AllOrders11, "Customers"). I have 3 questions to ask: (1) How can I re-install the Northwind database in SQL Server Management Studio Express? (2) When I use the .Fill Method, do I have to tell the SQL Server Management Studio Express to load and/or unload the Northwind files "Customers", "Orders" and "Order Details"? (3) After I executed the "shcDataSet", should I Upload the 3 Northwind files back to the SQL Server Management Studio Express? Please help and advise. Thanks, Scott Chang

SQL Server 2005 64bit Install - Missing Management Studio
Good Afternoon, I just installed SQL Server 2005 64bit on a fresh system with no other applications loaded on running on the new server. The only other component that was installed with the SS2K5 database services is SSIS. The base installation and the SP2 patch went on perfect. I went looking for the Management Studio thru the Start menu options and it is NOT under the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 group. The only options under the SS2K5 group are "Configuration Tools" and "Docs and Tutorials". Here are file names that I downloaded from the MS website and installed. How To Configure SQL Server Management Studio Express To Allow Doing Non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 From VB 2005 Express?
Hi all, For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area": (1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the following: Select Computer The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer. Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer O Remote computer Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option? (2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]", I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connections", Select a component and then configure its services and connections: |-| SQLEXPRESS |-| Database Engine Service I picked => Remote Connection On the right-hand side, there are: O Local connections only O Local and remorte connections O Using TCP/IP O Using named pipes only O Using both TCP/IP and named pipes Should I choose O Local and remorte connections and O Using named pipes only? Please help and tell me what options I should choose in (1) and (2). Thanks in advance, Scott Chang

Can't Install 2005 SQL Server Management Studio, It Doesnt Show Up. What A Joke!
Hello I have wasted several hours on this simple problem and I'm ready to give up. I simply want SQL Server Management Studio on my laptop so I can connect to our 2005 servers and manage them. I have several different versions of 2005 from our MSDN subscription including but not limited to: SQL 2005 Enterprise Edition (MSDN Library DVD) SQL 2005 Workgroup Edition SQL 2005 Standard Edition Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server (SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition) Everytime I tried to install it, the Server Management Studio simply would not install. I looked for the exe files and didn't find them. I verified the path several times and they simply didn't install. I googled and found a few solutoins but none helped. For example on: http://aspadvice.com/blogs/name/archive/2007/09/24/Installing-SQL-Server-Management-Studio-with-SQL-Server.aspx They stated to go to the 'Tools' folder on the CD and run it from there, I do not have these folders on my SQL 2005 CD/DVDs. I tried to reinstall it a few times with selection only the management tools for the client, but it thinks I have SQL 2005 installed!!! I uninstalled it from add/remove, and it didn't work. I deleted the folders and it didn't work. I ran msicuu2.exe and that still isn't working. Are there ANY suggestions on how to get this freaking Server Management Studio installed? MS really blew it on this one. Thanks in advance.

How Can I Install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition's Management Studio On A Desktop Machine?

Is there any workaround that i can still install the 2005 developer SSMS without uninstall the sql server 2005 Xpress version? SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 Suddenly Stops Working?
Hello, I am using SQL Server Express 2005 with VS2005. Initially, I have installed SQL Server Express 2005 along with SQL Server Management Studio Express, and then as and when Service packs released I have installed all of them. My current version is SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 and SP2 Update. I used this for about 15 days, then suddenly SQL Server Management Studio Stopped working! without any reason. When I try to run SSMSEE (Sql Server Management Studio Express Edition), hard disk light flickers for a while and then nothing. To rectify this problem, I tried to repair the installation of SSMSEE through Add/Remove program, it went off successfully and now, SSMSEE ran perfectly, BUT, as soon as I restarted the computer and when I tried to run SSMSEE, same problem started again i.e. hard disk light flicker for a while and then nothing! So, I uninstalled SQL Server Express Edition along with all its baggage, and reinstalled the same. Again SSMSEE ran perfectly until I restart the computer. As soon as I restart and try to run the SQL SERVER MANAGEMENT STUDIO, it wont run. One more thing, only SSMSEE stops working , SQL Server is working perfectly. I am at my wits end. I can't understand what to do? Has anybody encountered this probelm? please help me?

Server Express, Management Studio Express, Visual Studio Standard, And An ASP.NET Page....
I believe I'm missing something as far as my configuration goes...I'm new to working with SQL server and the databinding I'm trying to do. I have an ASP.NET page that has a radio button list box which I have databound to a database served up by SQL Express I'm having a lot of problems with connections... I was going to enumerate the behavior under each configuration (local only, remote tcp/ip only, remote pipes only, remote both), but I've realized that it is just flaky. Sometimes I can connect to the db with SQL Studio express, sometimes not. Sometimes I can add new tables and edit tables, sometimes not. Sometimes I can create a new connection when trying to databind from within Visual Studio, and sometimes not (sometimes I can't even connect, other times, I can connect initially but when I build a query through the designer it then has problems). Lastly, sometimes the ASP.NET page works correctly and sometimes not. This all seems to be mostly independent of how I configure SQL Server as far as what kinds of connections are allowed. I thought there was a pattern, but as I tested it more rigorously I found there wasn't. What I would like to do is be connected to the same DB with Visual Studio and SQL Studio, edit the DB as I wish, databind to it, and test my ASP.NET page, all without needing to jump through a bunch of hoops (although right now I wouldn't even know what those hoops are...it's just a shot in the dark as to what will work). It's all quite maddening and any help would be appreciated.

SQL Compact Edition 3.5 Vs. SQL Server Management Studio 2008, FileNotFoundException Microsoft.SqlServerCe.ManagementUI
Hi,I'm having an exception below when i tried to connect to SQL Server Compact Edition from SQL Server Management Studio (10.0.1075.23 ((SQL_PreRelease).071108-1357 )).I downloaded and installed the SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 from this link below :http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=38ed2670-a70a-43b3-87f3-7ab67b56cbf2&displaylang=enAnd I downloaded and installed the SQL Server 2008 Development edition from this link below :http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=104963It seems that the SQL Server 2008 Development edition comes with the these 2 SQL CE below :- Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 Beta ENU. Product Version: 3.5.5608.0.- Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 Beta Management Tools ENU. Product Version: 3.5.5608.0I tried to uninstalled these 2 and re-install the SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 Files, but it didn't help.Currently I'm uninstalling SQL Server 2008 because the command prompt installation instruction page could not be found in the books online, so i'm trying my luck to uninstall SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 and reinstall the whole SQL Server 2008. The main reason why I was trying to install SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition is only to manage SQL Server Compact 3.5 database file. Since i upgraded the database into 3.5, i was not able to open it anymore using SQL Express 2005 Query Designer in the VS 2008 is just like the sql view query designer which is not as good as sql management studio. I'm reminiscing the good old days with query analyzer Any advice to resolve this issue? Thanks in advance Steps :1. Choose Database : SQL Server Compact Edition2. Choose Any of the Database file options (New Database or Browse for more)3. Below exception will pop up.See the end of this message for details on invokingjust-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.************** Exception Text **************System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServerCe.ManagementUI, Version=10.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. Problem Installing SQL 2005 Developer + Express And Visual Studio 2008
I installed both SQL 2005 developer and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP2 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit. In every version "SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio" was missing. I uninstalled and reinstalled both version but always "SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio" was not available and the computer could not find devenv.exe file. I installed visual studio 2008 as well. For some reason the start menu link for "SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio" is ""C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 8Common7IDEdevenv.exe"" and devenv.exe is not there or anywhere Pleas advise.

Simple Examples Of SQLCLR By Connecting To SQL Express User Instances In Management Studio Via VB 2005 Express
Hi all, I want to do SQLCLR by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express and I have read the following articles and books: (i) Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio in http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2006/11/22/connecting-to-sql-express-user-insta... (ii) Managing SQL Server Express with SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express Edition in http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sql/2005/mgsqlexpwssmse.mspx (iii) Chapter 16 - Going Beyand Transact-SQL: Using the SQL Common Language Rutime (SQLCLR) in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for Dummies (iv) Chapter 21 - Working with the Common Language Runtime in Microsft SQL Server 2005 Programming for Dummies (v) Chapter 4 - Introduction to Common Language Runtime (CLR) Integration in Programming SQL Server 2005 by Bill Hamilton. I want to create an SQLCLR project "HelloWorld" by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express. But I am still not sure how to get it started, because I do not understand the following things: (1) Pipe Name for a User Instance, (2) Enabling (or Disabling) the CLR by using Transact-SQL, (3) Creating a Transact-SQL script, (4) Creating an Assembly, (5) Creating a backup device, etc. I need to see some simple examples of SQLCLR by Connecting to SQL Express User Instances in Management Studio via VB 2005 Express. Please help and tell me where in the websites I can find them. Thanks in advance, Scott Chang

Visual Studio Database File And SQL Server Management Studio Express Question
I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason

SQL Server Management Express Studio Management Tools
I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.
