Objective:
=======================

I'm installing SQL Express using VMWare. The virtual machine host OS is Vista Home ediition and its running on a Dual Xeon, 4Gig RAM, x86, Windows XP Pro SP2 box.

Installing SQL Express fails to get past the first step (after accepting the EULA).

I'm doing it via an unattended script via sqlcmd.exe. I get the same result manually installing.

Found a tip that lead to the solution:

Hmm, sounds like WMI might be corrupted, try these cmd line statements:
Mofcomp.exe %windir%system32wbemcimwin32.mof
Regsvr32 wbemupgd.dll
regsvr32 wbemsvc.dll
wmiprvse /regserver

but cant find the tool:

In your F: drive will be a tool called the "build uninstall wizard" under the path:
F:Setup ToolsBuild Uninstall Wizardsqlbuw.exe

Run this tool and see if it detects anything and removes the components. I really don't know exactly what you deleted in terms of random reg keys and directories, but somehow there are components left behind that setup is detecting.

As for your most recent error you encountered, that means there was another windows installer package running at the same time and setup was in contention with that and error'd out. I bet if you run it again you won't get that error. Usually that happens if windows updates are installing.

Thx...

WISHLIST: Why cant you run the command installer in Vista, then see the comments column in order to MSIZAP stuff anymore?? That was a cool feature, especially for products like Visual Studio 2003...

Found
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2594982&SiteID=1

The problem was my Vista virtual pc was started in safe networking mode, when I did a:
Start > Run > dcomcnfg

I saw under Services.. that the Windows Installer service wasn't started and that was due to being in safe mode!!

Problem solved before I could finish asking it!! ~ thought I'd share it..

Side-by-Side Install With SQL Express 2005 W/ Advanced Services And SQL Server 2005 Standard
I have SQL Express 2005 with Advanced Services on a development box that I also want to have installed side-by-sidewith SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition so I can develop apps using either edition based on the features I need (or don't need). From what I understand from sifting through other posts is that side-by-side installs of these two editions is supported and I should setup a named instance for each edition (SQLEXPRESS for the express edition and MSSQLSERVER for the standard edition). Is this setup accurate or is there another/better way?

Also, does anybody know if side-by-side installations of Reporting Services is also supported? If I install SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition with Reporting Services, will there be two different report servers running in IIS? Since there are different features in Reporting Services between the two editions, I'm not sure how side-by-side installations will effect one another.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Tony

Enforcing Rule: Client Side Or Server Side?
Hi,

In Analysis Services there is an option to enforce a role either on the client side or the server side.

Can someone kindly guide what's the recommended approach and what's really the difference between the two options.

How To Install And Use MSDE Engine On Client Side ?? - Pleas HELP !! URGENT
Hi All,
Have developed Client/Server (VB.NET) application with SQL Server 2000 backend engine. It is working fine. This application can connect to Database engine if user in our LAN or WAN.
Now, my users need to work on application while they are not in our network. For instance from Hotel, travel etc..  To achieve this, I thought to have MSDE installed on user's laptop and get copy of SQL 2k DB on user machine. But. here I got stuck !. Woudl really appreciate if you could help me !
MSDE engine, I hope that I can d/load from MS site. Belive that can be installed easly like other MS application. Upon installation, how can I get my SQL 2K DB attached or Sychronized ?
What about login id (like "sa") to connect to MSDE engine from my applciation. I will modify my application user to choose DB engine LOCAL or LAN. If LAN, I will use my existing connection string. But, LOCAL, what would be the provider, password, user id etc..
Never user MSDE, so queries will be bit more.
Appreciate all your help to get this resolved.
Many thanks in advance..
Regards,
AJ

Is this okay? Are there any caveats specific to running 2000 and 2005 on the same standby server?

Installing / Running Multiple Instances Of SQL Server Express 2005
My client hasa server running MS 2003 Server for Smal Business Server, and ithas SQL Server Express 2005installed (I believe it isinstalled 3 times, as part of SharePoint, Veritas Backup Exec and ACT! applications).

I am trying to implementan application that uses SQL Server 2000, but the Server 2003 SBS does not support that version. SoI need to launch an additional instance of SQL Server Exp 2005.

To do so, do I need todownload and install SQL Server Express 2005 software again? Or can I just run SQLSVR.exe from an existing instance, but with a different instance name (sqlservr.exe -s<InstanceName>?

The reason I need another instance is that these existing instances limit DDL statements.

I am new to this and compare it to launching MS Word multiple times - you don't need to reinstall Word to run it multiple times.

Islaunching from the command linea bad idea - and if it is, what is the better way to ensure that it launches under the local system contexta service?

Thanks in advance for any help and insights. It is much appreciated.

?? SQL Server 2005 Express SP2 Install Fails On Native Client ??
Hello all,

I'm trying to install "SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2" on a newly installed XP Pro SP2 machine. I downloaded "SQLEXPR32.EXE" (38,220,656 bytes) from the Microsoft site.

At the beginning of the setup the installation program scans my system -- no problems or warnings. Everything looks fine and ready to go.

During installation I uncheck, "Hide advanced configuration options" simply because I want to change the default instance name. Aside from changing the default instance name I make no other changes to the default installation configuration.

The installation begins but when it tries to comes to the "SQL Native Client" portion of the installation I get the following error dialog message:

"An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.msi'."

Below I've included the setup log fileofthe SQL Native Client portion of the setup. I've looked through the log file but didn't see anything obviously wrong until the error occurs toward the end.

Does anyone have an idea of what might be causing this to happen? I've install SSE many times in the past with no problems.

Thanks

SQL2005 And SQL2000 Client-Tools Side-by-Side?
We have some developers who manage SQL2000 servers from their WinXP workstations using Enterprise Manager. We have now rolled out our first SQL Server 2005.

Can we install the SQL2005 Management Studio side-by-side with Enterprise Manager on these WinXP workstations?

If not, what are most people doing in these cases?

Thanks!

Cannot Install SQL Server Express On Vista Ultimate - Cannot Find MS SQL Server Native Client
I am trying to install SQL Server Express - (the non ADV version) and get the following error.

"An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli_x64.msi'".

I have 64 bit Vista Ultimate running on an HP dv9000.

I am using the download from the bottom of the download page for SSX where it says 64 bit version.

Prior to this I got the. "64-bit ASP.net is registered. Required 32-bit ASP.NET to install Microsoft Reporting services 2005(32-bit)." messagd during the pre-install scan. From what I gather in the posts, the reporting issue is different from my installation package problem.

I have been trying to prove a point to friends about how far you can go with SSX but am having no luck installing it. This whole process took 1 hour in XP but I've been stymied for 2 days.

I would appreciate being pointed at the right downloads for what seems to be a simple install.

Installing SQL Server 2005 Express Via Command Prompt (silent / Basic GUI Install)
Hi,

I would be very grateful if someone could take a look at my command line install and offer advice on if I am doing it correctly.

The reason I am asking is because I cannot seem to get the server installed without having errors during the installation:
"The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service terminated with service-specific error 17113 (0x42D9)"

Looking at the server error log indicates that master.mdf was not in the data directory (I have however specified a different data directory for ease of backup by our software and this is created during the install but does not have this database in the data directory - it is however in the template data directory!

I also get this error when the SQL Server service is started:
"The SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) service terminated with service-specific error 3417 (0xD59)."

All advice is welcome. Please see below my batch file. Also, if you think I should do this in a different way then please let me know. I basically want to install SQL server on a customer computer and automate the install so the custoemr does not need to enter any information.

The goal of this install is:
[1] Deply a custom .Net application and SQL server at the same time on the same computer without user input.
[2] Allow remote .Net applications (designed by myself also) to connect over a LAN (and later maybe over a WAN) to the database to the above database.

The command line is this (I have also included the batch file I am usign below). For ease of reading I have put the parameters on a new line below:

setup.exe /qb
username="CustomerUsername"
companyname="OurCompany"
addlocal="SQL_Engine,SQL_Data_Files,SQL_Replication,Connectivity,SDK"
disablenetworkprotocols="0"

INSTALLSQLDATADIR="c:SqlData"
USESYSDB="c:SqlData"
SAVESYSDB="1"

Your advice is kindly welcome.

SQL Server Reports - RDL Client Side Rendering Engine
Our company is investigating using SQL Server Reports for most of our reporting needs. However, one of our needs is to run reports from a client side application whose datasource is also client side (currently Jet, but maybe MSDE in the future). I know the RDL report format that SQL Server Reports uses is supposedly an "open standard". Does anyone know if there are/will be 3rd party tools to render RDL into reports on the client and off data sources other than SQL Server? Thanks for the info,

Securing The MS SQL Server 2005 Database On Client Side
Hello!

I developed database driven .NET application and I need to deploy it. I faced a problem, which is "how to protect my database against direct access". I use MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition as a DBMS and appropriate database.

I want to make possible to manipulate with data in my database only through my client application.

1. How do I define SA password and instance name in silent mode of MS SQL 2005 EE installation with Mixed type of Authentication?

1.1. Can I change SA password after the installation?

2. If my database be attached to my new instance... Is it possible to copy my database, attach it to another instance and get a direct access to its objects?

Is there solution that make impossible to connect to my database on third-partie's side Idirectly, without using the client application?

I appriciate for a help.

Side By Side Installations Of SQL2005 Express And Developer Editions
I have downloaded and installed VS C# Express Orcas beta 1. It appears that Express editons ov VS can onlyconnect to SQL2005 Express and not to a high end edition which I have on my computer. In one of the Orcas forums, it was suggested that I can install SQL2005 Express side by side my high end SQL 2005. To play it safe, I wanted to get a confirmation from this forum before I do that. Is a side-by-side installation ok? thanks.

CE DB Requires SQL Express Install On Client Machines?
I'm working on a C# 2008 project, when i add a CE Database to it, then publish the app, the installer wants to download and install the entire SQL Server Express product on the client machines. My understanding is that I should be able to embed this database right into the app, but it defeats the purpose to have the installer download and install the entire express product (the actual project is 1 meg).

Is this expected behavior? or am I doing something wrong?

Trouble Install SQL Server Express (2005). Stalled On &&"Current Component Is Installing&&"
Hi

I am installing Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition. Everything goes well until the installation of SQL Server Express occurs. SQL Express installation progresses fine until very end of the installation. At that point it becomes stuck.

The installation says "Current component is installing" and is stuck on that message. The installer does not seem to be frozen as the picutres changes. However CPU usage for the setup processes is 0.

I have disabled all virus scanning software already.

Any help is apprceciated.

Set Up Failed SQL Native Client &&<sqlncli.msi&&> - SQL 2005 Express
I have .NET Framework 2.0 and Visual studio 2005 installed on my machine. I also have SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition installed with Service Pack 4.

When I try to install SQL Server 2005 express, I get an error when the setup tries to install SQL Native Client. I have read many forums, but couldnt find a resolution. I can not see SQL Native Client in my Add Remove Programs either.

I tried to unzip the SQLEXPR.exe into a temp folder and when I right click sqlncli.msi and say Repair or Uninstall. It says "This action is valid for products that are currently installed."

When i try to run the sqlncli.msi file ..i get an error message saying "Installation of Microsoft SQL Server Native Client failed because a higher version already exisits on the machine. To proceed uninstall the higher version and then run Microsoft SQL Server Native Client Setup"

Please help as I am unable to install SQL Server 2005 Express....
SQL Server Native Client -- Set up failed
SQL VSS Writer -- Set up failed
Database Services -- Set up failed

Thank you in advance

SQL Express Failed Install
I have been having terrible problems trying to install SQL Server Express on my laptop. This is so I can demo some products without an internet connection. If I try to install SQL Express using one of the Visual Studio products I get a message saying everything installed but the server portion is not there or running. If I try and install using just the SQL Express download then I get the following error:

SQL Server Setup has determined that the following account properties are not specified: 'AGTACCOUNT' . The properties specify the startup account for the services that are installed. To proceed, refer to the template.ini and set the properties to valid account names. If you are specifying a windows user account, you must also specify the password for the account.

I have tried to search for this error and all I have been able to find are references to the command line install. So I tried installing it from the command line using switch and ini configurations. I still get the same errors.

I also don't know if this is related or not but occasionally I also get a warning that my hardware is not sufficent to run the software. I look at the hardware requirements and my laptop meets or exceeds all of them (Pentium M, 1.86 Ghz, 512 M RAM, 40 Gb disk, XP SP2). The laptop is an IBM T43. All attempts were made on a clean install with nothing else loaded on the computer.

Any help would be appreciated. I am just about to give up on the whole project.

Client Side Cursor Vs Sever Side Cursor?
I having a difficult time here trying to figure out what to do here.I need a way to scroll through a recordset and display the resultswith both forward and backward movement on a web page(PHP usingADO/COM)..I know that if I use a client side cursor all the records get shovedto the client everytime that stored procedure is executed..if thisdatabase grows big wont that be an issue?..I know that I can set up a server side cursor that will only send therecord I need to the front end but..Ive been reading around and a lot of people have been saying never touse a server side cursor because of peformance issues.So i guess im weighing network performance needs with the client sidecursor vs server performance with the server side cursor..I am reallyconfused..which one should I use?-Jim

Client Side
I have a DLL that I have written in VB to automate certain functions in Mapinfo. I can use the DLL from Access or a VB project fine but I have problems in SQL Server 6.5. I can create an instance of the DLL ok using sp_OACreate, but when I call the function to create a Mapinfo Object in the DLL I get a VB error back 'Permission Denied' and my object is not created. Even so, the instance of Mapinfo is started (I can view it in my task manager)which I subsequently cannot close because according to the DLL it was never created!! I think this must be a SQL Server related problem since it works fine in VB/Access.

Any Ideas ??
Scott.

SQL Client Side
avaj writes "I was running SQL on my laptop (xp pro) when I load disk it tells me client side only I say okay and it loads using my local machine as server. This worked fine. Then it didn't. Everything was working; then I logged on and received the error message

"sql server does not exist or access is denied"

I have looked online for help and seen this error elsewhere but never in quite the same context as my problem; and the fixes I've read have not worked.

I've uninstalled, deleted and then reloaded the disk; still did not work. I'm at my wits end - I've been trying to fix this for a week.

Please, please help."
