MSDE Text Datatype - Unable To Store More Than 900 Characters. (msde + Visual Studio 2003)

Jun 6, 2005

Hello,

I'm not sure if it's the setup I did wrong, but I can't seem to get my
text datatype in my database to store more than 900 characters.
I'm trying to setup a news database for my website, which will populate
the information into a datagrid.  To test, I manually added a news
item in the database through the visual studio 2003 gui.  I
immediately noticed a problem as the I was getting an error after a
long news item saying:

"The value you entered is not consistent with the data type or length of the column, or over grid buffer limit."

I couldn't find anthing to set the buffer limit and the datatype is
"text" filled with simple text in the column.  As a further test,
I
simply entered 12334567890123... up to 900 characters and still
recevied the error.

I would appreciate someone leading me in the right direction on this one.

Thanks a lot.

Visual Studio 2002 Professional && MSDE

Jul 20, 2005

I have a copy of MS Visual Studio 2002 Professional ACADEMIC which Iunderstand is the same as the regular Professional version with theaddition of a student CDROM. The installation program on the firstCDROM only copies the MSDE to the harddrive and the copied setup filehas to then be manually executed to complete the installation. Are the SQL tools such the SQL Enterprise Manager and MS Queryincluded in the professional version? If so, how can I install thesetools? The course that I am taking uses these tools to study SQL. Ifnot, how is the MSDE to be used?

MSDE Windows 2003

Oct 3, 2005

Hi,

Got a problem with network access for MSDE on Win2003 SBS. I have tried all the usual stuff (SVRNETCN, firewall check) to get windows to open the port for network access, but I am having no luck.

Thought it maybe something to do with win2003 "increased" security.. so check the IPSec policy but nothing looks like it is assigned, plus I could also be checking the wrong policy.

As you can probably tell I know only little bits about server, policies and everything that goes with it (I normally work with the lovely pre setup database) but guess its time I should learn.

So with my small and probably dangerous knowledge can someone please let me know if I am looking in the right area for allowing port 1433 to open for MSDE? If I am how to I edit the policy to allow something to run accross the network?

Basic Server Stats

O/S: Windows 2003 Small Business Server Standard (all updates +sp)
NIC: One gigabit (know win2003 recommends 2)
Hardware: Hugly over the minimum spec!!

MSDE: 3* instances (2 pre installed - SBSMonitoring, SharePoint and 1 user defined that needs sharing)

Thanks so much for any help, background information on group policies and alike would be nice to know as well, but don't worry too much about that!

Visual Studio 2003 And SQL Server Express

Apr 14, 2006

I'm attempting to connect to my SQL Server Express instance through Visual Studio 2003. When I go to Data Connections, I choose the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server, then fill in all the parameters for my server (server name, username, password, database). When I click "Test Connection" it goes through successfully. When I click "Ok" to create the Data Connection, it fails saying that the username and password should be checked. I changed the username and password to the "sa" account I created when I installed SQL Server Express, and got the same successful connection test, but failure when it tries to create the connection. Any suggestions? Thanks!

SQL Server Mobile With Visual Studio 2003

Jan 2, 2006

I've recently noticed the availability of SQL Server Mobile, and would
like to take advantage of some of the new features, however, I'm
currently using Visual Studio 2003. The requirements state that Visual
Studio 2005 is required, but I was wondering if anyone has had any
success getting it to work with VS 2003?

I hope that I can do this with VS 2003, but if VS 2005 will be
required, I'd like to clear up a few issues before asking my workplace
to fork out more money for the upgrade:

What have your experiences been like in getting clients to
upgrade from SQL Server CE to SQL Server Mobile? I've seen some
postings regarding problems with specific devices which seem a bit
worrying, but I was wondering how easy it was in general.

Does SQL Server Mobile really do a good job of reclaiming wasted
space? Using SqlCeEngine's Compact method has caused problems due to
the required storage space to perform the operation.

The documentation states that using SQL Server 2000 with SP3A is
supported, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this?

Thanks in advance,

Adrien.

Unable To Install MSDE

Dec 28, 2003

Hi All,

I hope you can help.

I am reading SAMS Teach Yourself ASP.NET and have loaded the WEB Matrix and have been going through the exercises.

I have now tried to load MSDE and my first attempt seemed to load it correctly

C:sql2ksp3MSDE> setup SAPWD=****** SecurityMode=SQL

The Icon appeared in my task bar and I carried on with the Exercises.

My problem started when I tried to create my first data base.

Open Web Matrix
Clicked on Data Tab in the Workspace pane
Clicked on the new Connection Icon
Server = LocaHost
Clicked SQL Server authentication
User Name = sa
Password = ***** (As above)

However when I click on the "Create a new data base" link I get an Error

login failed for user 'sa'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted sql server connection.

I tried to look in the forum to see if I could find a reason however could not.

Decided in the end to uninstall using Start - Control panel - add & remove programs.

However now when I try and reinstall the installation fails.

Can any one help

Best wishes.

SQL/CLR Debugging Hangs On Visual Studio 2003 And SQL 2005

Feb 5, 2008

I am unable to debug code from a SQL Database Project using the CLR. After VS 2005 does the auto-attaching to the SQL server, VS hangs until I tell it to stop debugging. Many others have reported this as a similar problem, however this only seems to affect me when I€™m connecting to specific servers. Specifically it seems to be remote connections. When I attempt to connect to my SQL 2005 Developer Edition €œlocally€? I get right through and can debug.
From my VS output window:

Auto-attach to process '[1688] [SQL] gx620-eric' on machine 'gx620-eric' succeeded.

Debugging script from project script file.

testing

No rows affected.

The program '[1688] [SQL] gx620-eric: gx620-eric' has exited with code 0 (0x0).

When I attempt to connect to a remote server running Enterprise Edition, it hangs after a successful attach.

Auto-attach to process '[1856] [SQL] virtual2003eric' on machine 'virtual2003eric' succeeded.

Sometimes after countless attempts, I am able to get this to work, but lately I have had no success. As far as the SQL Server side, enabling and disabling the CLR through the Surface Area Configuration seems to be the only place to do anything relative to the CLR inside SQL server.

I have firewalls disabled. All SQL Servers presently have both SQL 2005 SP2 and Visual Studio 2005 SP1 installed.

I€™ve tried restarting servers and services, checking and un-checking €œAllow SQL/CLR Debugging€? and those steps did not work for me.

Does anyone have any insight on this one? Any ideas on how I can further debug this one?

Thanks.

Eric

Can I Use MS SQL Server Express 2005 In Visual Studio 2003?

Aug 3, 2007

I have been experiencing troubles since I was decided to install SQL Server Expr 2005 in my PC, first I needed to remove the .NET framework 1.1 in my computer because it is suggested before installing sql server expr 2k5 that cause my vs.net 2003 to stop loading because sql express runs in .NET framework 2.0 and vs.net 2003 is in .Net Framework 1.1 then what I did is to install .Net Framework 1.1 in my PC together with .Net Framework 2.0 and my vs.net started runnning again.

My problem now is when I try to connect to a database using Data Link Properties in the Server Explorer it says "[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen](Connect()).]Sql server does not exist or access denied." how could this happen if I can see the sql server in the Server Explorer in my VS.net environment?

Please somebody help me I am just learning to this language and I think I cannot proceed to the next few chapters remaining because of this.

Thank you very much!

I have SQLServer running on my laptop (I think), so can anyone help me out or maybe give me some example connection strings that you have used? Thanks.

DB Connection From Visual Studio 2003 To Sql Server 2005

Jun 1, 2007

If I go to the machine running sql 2005, where I am running visual Studio 2005, I can create this connection with no problems.

Is there a way fromvisual Studio 2003 to create a sqlDataAdapter with a connection to SQL 2005?

SQL 2005 Express And Visual Studio 2003 - Connecting

Jul 20, 2006

I have Visual Studio 2003 and had used it successfully with MSDE. I recently upgraded to SQL 2005 Express and cannot seem to connect to the SQL server. it appears in the list of servers on localhost, but when I try to create a new database it tells me that it "cannot create databases on this server." It will not even open up any existing databases.

I have .NET 2.0 installed. I uninstalled SQL and reinstalled it, but nothing seems to help. I feel I must be missing something, but do not know what.

I no longer have the MSDE installation files, so I hope I can get Studio to talk to SQL Express.

Any help is appreciated.

Problem In Concatenating Characters In Text Datatype?

Nov 12, 2001

Hi Everybody,

I have a table with one column of text data type. This table contains around 1200 records(each row is 60 characters only). My task is, I have to append all these records into a single record(Concatenation of records from other table) to another table.

For that I have created table(destination table) with one column of text datatype. Using the 'UPDATETEXT' function I am able to append 133 records(each row of 60 characters) from the other table into a single row of my destination table. After that I am not able to append my records further. It is giving the following error.

"
Server: Msg 7135, Level 16, State 4, Procedure gene1_proc, Line 26
Deletion length 60 is not in the range of available text, ntext, or image data. The statement has been terminated.
"
Why I have created 'text' instead of char or varchar datatype is, it can accept more than 8000 characters. But here in my case it is not accepting more than 8000 characters. The problem is coming from 134 (133*60 = 7980 characters) records onwards.

Can anybody guide me how to proceed with this?.

tks in advance,
Sam

Whether SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Can Work With Visual Studio 2003 (Ver 1.1)

Mar 3, 2006

We are new to SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. We are going to develope a solution for one of our client and we have to decide on which database to use for the solution. Client wanted to have a low cost solution. Thus we were not in a position to push them for SQL Sever 2000.

In the process, we also thought of having MySQL as one of the option. Another option we have is to use SQL Server 2005 Express Edition.

We wanted to know if SQL Server 2005 Express Edition can be used with Visual Studion 2003 (Ver 1.1) or it can only be used with Visual Studio 2005 (Ver 2.0)?

Hope to get feedback soon.

Displaying Html Formatted Text In Text Object In Visual Studio 2005 Crystal Report

Apr 29, 2008

Hello,

I know this question has been asked here before, but it was ridiculously answered : http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=98764&SiteID=1

I have a text object on my crystal report, to which I programmatically want to assign text in CS. It all works fine, except that if I have html tags in there, the text doesn't get formatted, it just displays the html tags as text as well.

Now in thread linked above, the answer was: right click the text object, and format the text object, hit paragraph text and select text interpretation to HTML. The only problem is, that for a text object, it doesn't have the text interpretation option. It's only an option for a formula field. It says so in the tech support link posted inside the post itself!!!

So if you have any idea how I can do this, please someone help me out. I am new to crystal, and there's not much helpful info on it online. I've searched for this for hours, and no solution.

NEED HELP! - Unable To Connect To MSDE Database Through Web Matrix Project

Jun 2, 2005

I'm new to asp.net and databases and I'm currently working my way through SAMs Teach Yourself ASP.I am up to working with databases and have successfully installed MSDE using the sql2kdesksp3.exe file. However, when I try to create a new database through the web matrix project I get an 'unable to connect' error. I have tried removing and re-installing the database and I've also re-installed it using the latest file from the MS web site but I still get the same error. I've checked the obvious...that the msde service is running, password is correct, and that checks out ok.Has anyone had a similar problem and resolved it?Thanks.

MSDE: Renaming Machine Without Reinstall Of MSDE

Mar 27, 2001

We currently have the problem, that all our machines are produced with the
same name and afterwards the name is changed. So we have the problem that
the checksum key for the MSDE isn't valid anymore. As MSDE can only be installed
from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem. Does anyone
know a solution for this problem ?? A program recalculating the cheksum ??

regards,

Manfred

MSDE Worth Using Or Should I Invest In MySQL? (was MSDE)

Mar 9, 2005

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this this question but I'll give it a shot.

The only db development that I have ever done is in MS Access. I have a project at work that is being accomplished in VB and I need a db engine to use as the back end. Visual studio came with a copy of MSDE. Is this tool worth using or should I invest in mySQL? Are there any advantages to using MSDE over mySQL?
