Matching A View's Columns To It's Underlying Table's Columns

Jul 20, 2005

Hello,

Using SQL Server 2000, I'm trying to put together a query that will
tell me the following information about a view:
The View Name
The names of the View's columns
The names of the source tables used in the view
The names of the columns that are used from the source tables

Borrowing code from the VIEW_COLUMN_USAGE view, I've got the code
below, which gives me the View Name, Source Table Name, and Source
Column Name. And I can easily enough get the View columns from the
syscolumns table. The problem is that I haven't figured out how to
link a source column name to a view column name. Any help would be
appreciated.

Gary

select
v_obj.name as ViewName,
t_obj.name as SourceTable,
t_col.name as SourceColumn
from
sysobjects t_obj,
sysobjects v_obj,
sysdepends dep,
syscolumns t_col
where
v_obj.xtype = 'V'
and dep.id = v_obj.id
and dep.depid = t_obj.id
and t_obj.id = t_col.id
and dep.depnumber = t_col.colid
order by
v_obj.name,
t_obj.name,
t_col.name

UPDATE On Table Based On Matching Columns

Apr 8, 2008

I have 4 rows below in file tblTEST, and I want to be able to transfer the CODE from the MAIN location to the INT location (replacing all existing "A" codes), preceeded by an "I".

ID LOC CODE
-- ----- ------
11 MAIN B
11 INT A
22 MAIN C
22 INT A

I want the result to be:

ID LOC CODE
-- ----- ------
11 MAIN B
11 INT IB
22 MAIN C
22 INT IC

I am stumped as to how to do this - any help or advice would be appreciated.

The only thing I've come up with is:

UPDATE S
SET s.code = B.code
FROM tbltest B
LEFT OUTER JOIN tbltest S ON B.id = S.id
WHERE (S.loc = 'INT')

But when I run it, it says "0 rows affected".

AND T4.MOTIFA = T9.CDCODE
AND T5.IDESTA = T11.CDCODE
and T6.stempl = 'A'
and t7.cdstco = 'z04'
AND T8.CDLANG = 'U'
and t9.cdstco = 'DSJ'
AND T10.CDLANG= 'U'
and t11.cdstco= 'DRE'
AND T12.CDLANG= 'U'
and T4.DATDEB <= T3.DTEN00 and T4.DATFIN >= T3.DTEF00
and T3.DTEN00 <= T5.DTEN00 and T3.DTEN00 >= T5.DTEF00
and T6.dtef1s <= getdate() and T6.datxxx > getdate()

Also Please suggest me some links where i can get info about the indexes that has to be created on these types of queries where joins are involved on these many tables.
Also throw some light on how to analyse the execution plan for further enhancements.

Thanks in advance

Matching Columns

Sep 7, 2004

All

I have a table which contains 4 columns each of which are NULL or contain a 6 digit code.
Here is a sample of the table content:

COL1 COL2 COL3 COL4
----- ----- ----- -----
452359 NULL NULL 347406
NULL NULL 347406 347406
592319 NULL 347406 347406
592319 150009 347406 347406
592319 150010 347406 347406

Through out the table any number of the columns can be null.

I wish to remove rows from this table where the columns values are contained in another row i.e Row 2 above is contained within row 3. Similarly, row 3 is contained within row 4.
So, the only rows I want from the sample data above are rows 1, 4 and 5.

I hope I have explained my query adequately, and any help would be great appreciated. (Before I go mad...!)

Regards,
Katherine

SQL 2012 :: Split Data From Two Columns In One Table Into Multiple Columns Of Result Table

Jul 22, 2015

So I have been trying to get mySQL query to work for a large database that I have. I have (lets say) two tables Table_One and Table_Two. Table_One has three columns: Type, Animal and TestID and Table_Two has 2 columns Test_Name and Test_ID. Example with values is below:

**TABLE_ONE**
Type Animal TestID
-----------------------------------------
Mammal Goat 1
Fish Cod 1
Bird Chicken 1
Reptile Snake 1
Bird Crow 2
Mammal Cow 2
Bird Ostrich 3

**Table_Two**
Test_name TestID
-------------------------
Test_1 1
Test_1 1
Test_1 1
Test_1 1
Test_2 2
Test_2 2
Test_3 3

In Table_One all types come under one column and the values of all Types (Mammal, Fish, Bird, Reptile) come under another column (Animals). Table_One and Two can be linked by Test_ID

I am trying to create a table such as shown below:

Test_Name Bird Reptile Mammal Fish
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Test_1 Chicken Snake Goat Cod
Test_2 Crow Cow
Test_3 Ostrich

This should be my final table. The approach I am currently using is to make multiple instances of Table_One and using joins to form this final table. So the column Bird, Reptile, Mammal and Fish all come from a different copy of Table_one.

For e.g

Select
Test_Name AS 'Test_Name',
Table_Bird.Animal AS 'Birds',
Table_Mammal.Animal AS 'Mammal',
Table_Reptile.Animal AS 'Reptile,
Table_Fish.Animal AS 'Fish'
From Table_One

[Code] .....

The problem with this query is it only works when all entries for Birds, Mammals, Reptiles and Fish have some value. If one field is empty as for Test_Two or Test_Three, it doesn't return that record. I used Or instead of And in the WHERE clause but that didn't work as well.

Transact SQL :: Select And Parse Json Data From 2 Columns Into Multiple Columns In A Table?

Apr 29, 2015

I have a business need to create a report by query data from a MS SQL 2008 database and display the result to the users on a web page. The report initially has 6 columns of data and 2 out of 6 have JSON data so the users request to have those 2 JSON columns parse into 15 additional columns (first JSON column has 8 key/value pairs and the second JSON column has 7 key/value pairs). Here what I have done so far:

I found a table value function (fnSplitJson2) from this link [URL]. Using this function I can parse a column of JSON data into a table. So when I use the function above against the first column (with JSON data) in my query (with CROSS APPLY) I got the right data back the but I got 8 additional rows of each of the row in my table. The reason for this side effect is because the function returned a table of 8 row (8 key/value pairs) for each json string data that it parsed.

1. First question: How do I modify my current query (see below) so that for each row in my table i got back one row with 19 columns.

SELECT A.ITEM1,A.ITEM2,A.ITEM3,A.ITEM4, B.*
FROM PRODUCT A
CROSS APPLY fnSplitJson2(A.ITEM5,NULL) B

If updated my query (see below) and call the function twice within the CROSS APPLY clause I got this error: "The multi-part identifier "A.ITEM6" could be be bound.

2. My second question: How to i get around this error?

SELECT A.ITEM1,A.ITEM2,A.ITEM3,A.ITEM4, B.*, C.*
FROM PRODUCT A
CROSS APPLY fnSplitJson2(A.ITEM5,NULL) B,  fnSplitJson2(A.ITEM6,NULL) C

I am using Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 version. Windows 7 desktop.

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Matching Existence Of Data Between Like Columns?

Jul 16, 2015

I've been matching some incoming contacts to existing contacts in a database and need to update, insert, or rematch based on the ifs below.

If name, phone, and email all provided for both, then use the highest Source. So if the Contact has a Source value of 5 and SourceContact has a ContactSource of 1, update Contact with SourceContact

If name, phone and email all provided, and source the same then update to new values.

If name and phone on SourceContact and name and Email on Contact then reset Contact_fk to -1 should not have matched, but should be an insert

If name and email on SourceContact and name and phone on Contact then reset Contact_fk to -1 should not have matched, but should be an insert

If name and phone on SourceContact and name and/or Phone is blank in Contact then update

If name and email on SourceContact and name and/or email is blank in Contact then update

If phone numbers can be different, just update record to SourceContact if it has a same or higher ContactSource

If email address do not match then set SourceContacts to -1 Contact_fk it was computed incorrectly. Both have a non blank email

If Contact_fk is 0 then it is a new contact and just insert it.

IF OBJECT_ID('dbo.SourceContact', 'U') IS NOT NULL DROP TABLE [dbo].[SourceContact];
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[SourceContact]

RS2k Issue: PDF Exporting Report With Hidden Columns, Stretches Visible Columns And Misplaces Columns On Spanned Page

Dec 13, 2007

Hello:

I am running into an issue with RS2k PDF export.

Case: Exporting Report to PDF/Printing/TIFF
Report: Contains 1 table with 19 Columns. 1 column is static, the other 18 are visible at the users descretion. Report when printed/exported to pdf spans 2 pages naturally, 16 on the first page, 3 on the second, and the column widths have been adjusted to provide a perfect page span .

User A elects to hide two of the columns, and show the rest. The report complies and the viewable version is perfect, the excel export is perfect.. the PDF export on the first page causes every fith column, starting with the last column that was hidden to be expanded to take up additional width. On the spanned page, it renders the first column on that page correctly, then there is a white space gap equal to the width of the hidden columns and then the rest of the cells show with the last column expanded to take up the same width that the original 2 columns were going to take up, plus its width.

We have tried several different settings to see if it helps this issue or makes it worse. So far cangrow/canshrink/keep together have made no impact. It is not possible to increase the page size due to limited page size selection availablility for the client. There are far too many combinations of what the user can elect to show or hide to put together different tables to show and hide on the same report to remove this effect.

Any help or suggestion on this issue would be appreciated

Permission On View. Is There Way To Avoid Granting Persmission On The Underlying Table?

Jul 13, 2007

I want to grant access on the below view for an end user so that he connect to our SQL server and retrieve data. The view looks like the below

CREATE VIEW DB1.[dbo].[View1]
AS
-- For brevity, I made it as simple statement.
SELECT *
From DB2.dbo.table2
GO

For the above view, it looks like I have to grant select and connect permission for the DB1. [dbo].[View1] as well as DB2.dbo.table2.

1. Is my understanding correct?

2. I want the user to access only DB1. [dbo].[View1] and not the underlying tables. Is there a way to grant access only on the view and execute the statement on a different security context so that the user can€™t access DB2.dbo.table2 directly?

3. When the user uses SQL Server Management Studio to connect to SQL server, he is able to connect and select DB2.dbo.table2 directly. Is there any way to restrict user from viewing and executing select statement on DB2 database from SQL Server Management Studio

Thanks in advance for your help

Code Is Getting Compiled Even Columns Are Not Matching In Cursor Declaration

Jun 28, 2013

I have some stored procedure and there is a cursor inside it. I added some new columns to the table and those columns I included in the cursor declaration and fetch statement. In the cursor declaration I forgot to add comma (,) in between the new columns. So SQL Server it considers as a alias name for that column so syntactically it is correct. But logically in the cursor declaration having less number of columns than the columns in the fetch statement. So it should throw an error. But the procedure is getting compiled without raising any error. But if I execute the procedure that time it is throwing the error.

For example, below I have given the sample procedure. In this procedure, in the cursor declaration I removed the comma (,) between DOB and DOJ. If I compile this procedure it is getting compiled. But when execute that time only it is throwing the error. So I am interested in if any option is available to know the error in the compilation time itself.

@fname VARCHAR(50),

Of course the above query is missing a few things but with ETL the where clause UPPER(RTRIM does not appear to be something that has an object or property that I can use in the Lookup.

Table Destination
{

SubjectId varchar(20),
SubjectDate datetime,
category varchar(20),
LastUpdate datetime

Please note that the number columns are different in each table.
I wanted to dump the data of Source table to Destination table. I meant to say that the rows of 2 columns in Source table to last 2 rows of Destination table.
And also my oreder of the columns in Destination table will vary. So i need to a way to dynamically insert the data in bulk. but i will know the column names for sure before inserting.

Is there anyway to bulk insert into these columns.

View Columns Switched

I'm having an odd issue with SQL Server. What happens is the following: I create view1. I then create view2 which uses view1. I then create view3 which uses view2. Then, if I make a change in View1, my other views are messed up. What happens is that columns in view3 (and view2) will be switched. Therefore, if a crystal report for example references view3, I'll suddenly get an exception due to a field in the cyrstal report thinking it's going to get an integer but gets a date instead. It's as if the columns were moved around. Is this a known issue with SQL Server 2000? Has someone else had that here? Has someone resolved that here? thx.

Query To View With Many Columns

Jul 31, 2007

Hi All,
I have a simple question. If I have a view that query from joined multiple tables and return a lot of columns (more than 100). If I run a simple query just return several columns (e.g. 4-5 columns), will SQL Server query all columns first from all joined table? or can SQL Server query only necessary column from related table?

Does anyone have idea how to join table that can reflect both left and right join?
Table A Table B
Column1 Column2 Column3 Column4 Column1 Column2 Column 3 Column5
A Jan 5 xxx A Jan 1 yyy
B Feb 3 C Mar 4
B Mar 4 C Apr 3
C Apr 2 D May 2
E Mar 1

Result Table
Column1 Column2 Column3 Column4 Column 5
A Jan 6 (= 5+1) xxx yyyy
B Feb 3
B Mar 4
C Mar 4
C Apr 5 (= 2+3)
D May 2
E Mar 1

So the result table is a join on column1 and column2 (both are primary key), with column3 is a sum aggregate. Table A has additional column4 and Table B has additional column5, so quite difficult to union (In fact, there are a lot of column differences between table).

Thanks for the help.
