ODBC Trusted_Connection Call To SQLGetInfo Returns DBO As User Name, Not NT User
Hello, all:
I am connecting to SQL Server 2000 with a trusted connection, and that is working fine. I then am issuing a SQLGetInfo call to find out the SQL_USER_NAME, which is always returning dbo instead of (my) Windows NT login name, which I expect to see. THe authentication is (apparently) confirmed by the SQL Server session monitor where it shows the right Windows NT user name logged in, over ODBC. With a standard SQL Login, untrusted, I definitely get the right user name back, not dbo.
So:
Login Type / user id /returned value from SQLGetInfo
Windows Authentication / Windows login / dbo
SQL Authentication / Windows login (UID) / UID
The problem is that I am trying to confirm that the userid entered in a dialog or passed on the command line to my application matches the actual connected user name inside SQL Server....
My questions:
Is there some pathology in Trusted_Connections that masks the Windows/NT login name and always returns UID 'dbo' from a call to SQLGetInfo? Is there a MSS (public) stored procedure that can robustly give back the logged in user name so I can bypass the SQLGetInfo call?

ASP.NET 2.0 Call Of MS SQL DTS Package Fails With Unknown User Name/Password
I am writing an ASP.NET intranet application on a Windows XP machine running IIS 5.1 which executes a MS SQL Server 2000 DTS package as part of the process. The application allows the user to select a UNC path of an input source (.txt) file to be procesed by the DTS pacakge and the UNC file path property is then set in the source object name of the DTS package tasks before executing the DTS package. Whenever I run the application using a file path that is on my development machine (the same machine that the web server is on) it works fine. When I select a source file path that is on a network share folder, the DTS package fails with the following error:Event Type: ErrorEvent Source: DataTransformationServicesEvent Category: NoneEvent ID: 81Date: 2/14/2007Time: 12:58:06 PMUser: N/AComputer: PHILSDELL2Description:The execution of the following DTS Package failed: Error Source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services (DTS) PackageError Description:Package failed because Step 'DTSStep_DTSDataPumpTask_2' failed.Error code: 80040428Error Help File:sqldts80.hlpError Help Context ID:700Package Name: ATMRecon_ImportElanACHTxtPackage Description: (null)Package ID: {3A8CC31D-A81F-40B7-BE57-AEB3AA238088}Package Version: {B01420A7-ED22-49A7-B4C7-9FA1732394E3}Package Execution Lineage: {2A9D45E8-35F8-4F0A-8339-7E5E29DA08B7}Executed On: PHILSDELL2Executed By: webaccess23Execution Started: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMExecution Completed: 2/14/2007 12:58:06 PMTotal Execution Time: 1.047 secondsPackage Steps execution information:Step 'DTSStep_DTSExecuteSQLTask_1' succeededStep Execution Started: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMStep Execution Completed: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMTotal Step Execution Time: 0.047 secondsProgress count in Step: 0Step 'DTSStep_DTSExecuteSQLTask_2' succeededStep Execution Started: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMStep Execution Completed: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMTotal Step Execution Time: 0.047 secondsProgress count in Step: 0Step 'DTSStep_DTSDataPumpTask_1' failedStep Error Source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services Flat File Rowset ProviderStep Error Description:Error opening datafile: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.Step Error code: 80004005Step Error Help File:DTSFFile.hlpStep Error Help Context ID:0Step Execution Started: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMStep Execution Completed: 2/14/2007 12:58:06 PMTotal Step Execution Time: 1 secondsProgress count in Step: 0Step 'DTSStep_DTSDataPumpTask_2' failedStep Error Source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services Flat File Rowset ProviderStep Error Description:Error opening datafile: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.Step Error code: 80004005Step Error Help File:DTSFFile.hlpStep Error Help Context ID:0Step Execution Started: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMStep Execution Completed: 2/14/2007 12:58:05 PMTotal Step Execution Time: 0.031 secondsProgress count in Step: 0 When I check the Security Event Log on the server on which the network share is located, I find the following set of messages repeated multiple times:Event Type: Failure AuditEvent Source: SecurityEvent Category: Account Logon Event ID: 680Date: 2/14/2007Time: 1:02:48 PMUser: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEMComputer: FS1ADescription:Logon attempt by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0 Logon account: ASPNET Source Workstation: PHILSDELL2 Error Code: 0xC000006AEvent Type: Failure AuditEvent Source: SecurityEvent Category: Logon/Logoff Event ID: 529Date: 2/14/2007Time: 1:02:48 PMUser: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEMComputer: FS1ADescription:Logon Failure: Reason: Unknown user name or bad password User Name: ASPNET Domain: PHILSDELL2 Logon Type: 3 Logon Process: NtLmSsp Authentication Package: NTLM Workstation Name: PHILSDELL2 Caller User Name: - Caller Domain: - Caller Logon ID: - Caller Process ID: - Transited Services: - Source Network Address: 10.120.4.61 Source Port: 0The problem appears to be that the DTS package is trying to access the input source file using the local ASPNET Id from PHILSDELL2 which does not have authority to the network share. I have wracked my brain trying to determine where the ASPNET security context is coming from to no avail. Can someone shed some light on what security credentials the DTS package is using to access the source files and how to change them?

Find Phonecall Records Based On User At The Time Of Call
i have a table of phonecall records detailing amongst other things the time and duration of the call. there is a relationship linking this table to a table of handsets and from there to a table of users. this users table lists the start date the user had the phone. as ever sample data might make this easier to show: PhoneUsers table PhoneUserID Name StartDate PhoneID 1 john 1/08/2006 1 2 bob 20/08/2006 1 3 fred 2/08/2006 2 etc Phones table: PhoneID 1 2 etc PhoneCalls table: PhoneCallID PhoneID CallDate Duration 1 1 10/08/2006 25 2 1 23/082006 20 3 2 23/08/2006 20 i want the following result set: user calldate duration john 10/08/2006 25 bob 23/08/2006 20 fred 23/08/2006 20 essentially i am trying to link the phonecalls to the user of the phone at the time of the call. i make the following assumptions regarding the data: the user is responsible for all calls for a given handset from the 'startdate' until the next 'startdate' for a different user, if such a record exists, if not then for all calls after that date thanks

Odbc Errors After Joining New Domain With New User
Hi I am new to this forum so I hope I have got the right one. The problem I am having is I installed a new server into an office with 25 users. I joined the users to the new domain with new logins. The server process then installed outlook 2003 onto each machine. Most machines are windows 2000 Problems arose in sage I have tied this down to the report designer and odbc. On every machine bar 1 the report designer crashed when running a report. The problem like I said was that you cannot now connect to the odbc driver for sage and when you go into odbcad and try to look at the driver you get an error saying The setup routines for the sage line 50 odbc driver could not be loaded due to system error 127 Then after that comes Could not load the setup or translator library I have looked on the net for this error and it tells you to look in the registry to make sure that the odbcinst is pointing to the correct location, I have checked this and it is. I ahve also checked the security and this seems ok aswell. The next step was I loaded a fresh copy of windows 2000 into a new folder and tried to load the odbc driver again. This failed with the same as above. This points to the software settings but I cannot find out where. Iwas wondering if anyone has had the same problem and they could point me in the right direction.

Login Failed For User &&". The User Is Not Associated With Trusted Sql Server Connection
We are wanting to use SQLEXPRESS in a workgroup called REALITY, no servers just PCs. I have four PCs in this workgroup and need them all to share the same database from one of the PCs. I can share folders and map a network drive but can not connect to the SQLEXPRESS database remotely. I have set server authentication mode to Windows and SQL and have enable local and remote connections (TCP/IP only) in the surface area. After making these modifications I was able to connect to the database through the SQL Server Management Studio Express after I enable the guest account. When I first started I had numerous connection errors and have worked through them all by performing the above and was only finally able to connect after enabling the guest account and adding said account to the SecurityLogins. However, today I am unable to connect I have double and triple checked the settings and still continue to receive the same error.

Is There A Way To Show A User-friendly Error When User Did Not Select A Required Parameter ?
Hi all, I was wondering whether there is a way to show the user an error when the user did not select a specific parameter. In my case, I have two optional parameters. The user has to select either one to view the report. If the user does not select either one, I would like to show some sort of an error page indicating so. However, all i am getting is a complete blank with no report in sight. I as a developer know this is an error as a result of missing parameters, but i was wondering whether I could produce a page or direct it to a page so that the user doesn't go all horrified at an empty page ? Help:SQLExpress User Instance Fails For Normal User; Works For Administrator
I'm using the RTM version of Visual Studion 2008 and SQLServer Express. Logged in as an administrator, I can create a connection to an mdf file and all is well. As a normal user, attempting to create a connection gives the message "sqlservr.exe has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I have tried this with UAC turned on and turned off. The result is the same. In Services I can see that SQLEXPRESS is running, but each time I try to connect, I get the "stopped working" message. For existing database programs that have the .mdf file stored in the project folder, I can run the program in the VS IDE on my XP machine and on my Vista machine as administrator, but not as a normal user. I'm not looking for a workaround to make this work once, but the cause and solution to the problem. This is for an introductory VB textbook and we must be able to move a database program from one machine to another and make it work. Everything I have read says that SQLExpress should be able to do that. Can anyone help me with this? Judy Fraser

Script Failed For User / User.UserType: NoLogin Is Not A Valid Option For SQL Server 2005
I posted this on USENET (microsoft.public.sqlserver.dts) but no response so far. Hopefully someone here can help? I have converted a SQL Server 2000 DTS package to an SSIS one for SQL Server 2005. When I execute the package that has CopyDatabaseUsers set to true, I get the following errors that cause the package to stop: [Transfer SQL Server Objects Task] Error: Execution failed with the following error: "Script failed for User 'xyzUser'. ". [Transfer SQL Server Objects Task] Error: Execution failed with the following error: "User.UserType: NoLogin is not a valid option for SQL Server 2005." The SSIS package is copying from a 2005 database to a 2000 one. The user that is failing appears to have been created with the WITHOUT LOGIN clause. Looking up User.UserType I see that NoLogin is an enumerator of the type. How come it isn't valid for 2005? How do I work around this? Many thanks.

Windows Authentication - Cannot Generate SSPI Context - Login Failed For User ''. The User Is Not Associated With A Trusted SQL
We are looking at developing an SQL Server 2005 Database and I would like to use Windows Authentication rather than SQL Server Authentication to connect our client app. In our development environment, we have two Servers, one being used as a file server and the other as an SQL Server. We have now set up a domain using the file server as the domain controller. (We had previously been set up to use a workgroup). I have set up an active directory group called SqlDevelopers and added an active directory user called Jonathan to it. On the SQL Sever, in management studio, I have set up a new server login which uses windows authentication called DomainSqlDevelopers. I used the GUI to verify I could see the domain and the group. The default database is set to a test database on the server. A user in the test database is mapped to the DomainSqlDevelopers and given the Roles dbo, db_datareader, db_datawriter. To test the log in, on the server, I logged out as administrator and in as Jonathan. I could successfully access the server through management studio using windows authentication. However, if I log in as Jonathan on my client PC and try to access the SQL Server using management studio and windows authentication, I have problems. The first time I try I will get a timeout error. If I try again will get either: Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection Or Cannot generate SSPI context I can€™t determine any pattern to which of the above errors I get. However, if I log in as administrator on my client PC, I can connect to the server using management studio and windows authentication. Sounds like Active Directory/Domain or other Network issue (Not really my area). I would be grateful for any help. Thanks, Jon

Login Failed For User ''. The User Is Not Associated With A Trusted SQL Server Connection.
Arrgh! I've check and to make sure SQL Server and Windows Authentication option is selected. The user has Grant access to connect to database engine and Login is enabled...and also has database read/write privs. I can login using the username/password from Mangement Studio Express, but I can't from my app. Here is my web.config: <connectionStrings> <add name="CPT_ConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=192.168.1.40ccsql1;Integrated Security=SSPI;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings> <system.web> <identity impersonate="true"></identity> </system.web> The only thing I can think of is that my app is using a DSN to connect to the database. Any ideas? Many thanks, Mark

Login Failed For User ''. The User Is Not Associated With A Trusted SQL Server Connection.
I've seen many, many, many, many posts regarding this topic - but none have been able to fully explain nor fix my problem.I've developed a security solution according to Scott Gu's guide and it works great - but only on my local machine running VWD and SQLExp2005. Once I move this application it completely breaks in the productions environment. Today I managed to get it halfway there. I created a SQL login and changed my web.config to use these credentials - now the web application will come up, but none of my links (that are role based) are displayed - most likely because i'm authenticating as the SQL credentials instead of me. So I switch it back to windows authenticated, as it is on my laptop, and it breaks again. Please tell me theres a way to get this working in production and Scott's fantastic tutorial hasn't wasted me 2 weeks of work. Here's the exact error I get when using Integrated authentication: Server Error in '/Contracts' Application. Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. Problem In SQL Developing As Restricted User (member Of User Group)
Greetings,VWD EE and other Tools do not have problems working O.K. on my machine, when I am logged-on as restricted(limited) user, both environment and local web server are functioning, and it was MS effort to do it right.BUT the Problem is, when I try to connect to database->new DB connection(either through vwd or management studio etc). I get an Error - which should be written to event log (according to msg) but it isn't - that I can't connect. I am sure that it is because NO SQL SERVER2005EXPRESS instance is running, which I think is the only prerequisite to have it work (I do not need sqlbrowser service I am doint local development).SQL2005express service is configured on MANUAL start. I can start it as administrator through SQL config manager, but it is not convienient and what I want. I need to start it ONLY as a developer user, I do not want it to be running all-the-time for everyuser using computer. It was congigured as Network Service logon, I tried Local Service logon, and I even tried configuring it to logon as -my developer user- account, e.g. with limited user name and his password. In every case I can't start the service as member of users group and this developer. Then I added limited user to SQL2005EXPRESS group. Still NO help, won't start either. My question is, If I want to start developing ADO2.NET application and I need to have running SQL2005Express instance as a develper, how can I start it? I think I do not have some rights to masterDB or something. Do it allways need to be running when computer starts? Isn't there any other way, to start it JUST when I think I start developing?I know of user-mode of accessing SQL2005express DBs, but it also assumes that SQL2005Express service is already running, what I am trying to prevent. I do not want to have it running for everyone who uses computer, just for someone who neeeds it.Any help explaining me the right way HOW TO SETUP WORKING ENVIRONMENT when developing as limited user welcome, I read the the documentations and haven't found the answers.THANK YOU !
