Install SQL 2005 To Cluster That Has SQL 2000 Installed
I have a Cluster environment that has SQL 2000 Enterprise installed. I would like to install SQL 2005 Enterprise as well. What should I watch out for. Do I need to specify a named instance for the 05 install, setup is giving me the option and does see the 2000 instance? Is there a document that walks through this installation? Regards

Can SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Coexist With SQL Server 2000 Enterprise?
Not sure if this was posted but having a hard time finding an answer. I'm currently running sql server 2000 enterprise edition on my machine and was wondering what would happen if i installed 2005 express edition and vice versa? I've found many blogs and post about compatibility issues with the 2005 Express Beta version but couldn't find any news with full version. It would be much appreciated if someone can help me out with this problem. Thanks!

SQL Server 2005 Standard On 2 Nodes Of A 4 Node Cluster
My question is, I'd like my actual cluster to have 4 servers. The virtual server that will be running SQL 2005 will only be installed on 2 of those nodes. Will this work or do I have to split my cluster in to 2 to meet the SQL Server 2005 2 node failover limitation? A basic config for the cluster would be like below.... ClusterSQLNode Active SQL 2005 Server ClusterExchNode Active Exchange Server ClusterAppNode Active Application Server ClusterFailoverNode Failover SQL 2005 Failover Exchange Failover Application Will SQL 2005 install in a 4 server cluster if I only install it on to two of the nodes? Any potential gotchas?

Rebooting Cluster Nodes Hosting SQL Server Failover Cluster
I have been told that it is imperative that, when rebooting a Microsoft Win2000 cluster, both servers should not boot simultaneously as this will or may cause resource contention and/or more serious problems. As a result, one of the nodes has a several minute countdown delay in the boot process so that, if both machines reboot unexpectedly (and therefore, concurrently), they will not vie for shared resources. I have looked on Microsoft's Technet for some confirmation, but have not been able to find any. Does anyone have experience with this issue causing problems? Thanks.

Install Fails On X64 Cluster Nodes.
I can't seem to install SQL Server 2005 (x64 version) on an x64 Win2k3 two node cluster. I get all the way through the configuration and setup fails because it cannot start a task on the remote node. The error message indicates to check the task scheduler log file, which I have and I cannot find any 'errors' in the file. Google/MSDN/Technet turn up nothing on multiple searches. Has anyone else run into this problem? My installation account is a local admin on both machines, so is the sql cluster account. For the life of me I cannot figure out what's different for an x64 install vs 32bit....

Enterprise Edition Doesnt Install The SQL Server Instance.
I am trying to install the SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, but on the components selection page, the only options I can check are Sample Book/Docs and Tools(Business Intelligence Studio, SQL Management Studio). Even on the advanced page, those are the only options. Everything runs with no problem, except the SQL server instance. I checked on the SQL Server Configuration Manager, and it does not show any SQL instances installed. I tried adding a new instance using the add/remove>change for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 by selecting the setup.exe file in the Enterprise CD, but the it has the same options. If I select the setup.exe file from my Workgroup Edition CD, the option for adding new instances works. What should I Do? Cant I add SQL server instances using the Enterprise Edition? I was unable to install even the first instance. The computer I am using meets all requirements and no SQL versions have been installed yet. Thanks for the help.

How To Install SS2005 On New Nodes In Existing Cluster For Multiple Instances ???
Hi There I have found no real documentation on this, so any links would be greatly appreciated. We have an existing 2 node active active cluster. A default and and named instance SS2005 Enterprise Edition are installed on the cluster. Recently we acquired new hardware, 2 servers, which we added to the cluster so we now have a 4 node cluster. The 2 new nodes have OS etc installed. Now i have installed sql on a new multi node cluster, i have upgraded sql server in an existing cluster BUT i have never installed sql on an existing cluster for new nodes for multiple instances. Now i presume you simply run the install on one of the new nodes, do this for a default instance, selecting both 2 new nodes to installl on. And do this again for the named instance. But in the past I have never been promoted for which nodes to install sql on, it simply does all the nodes BUT i do not want this. And how will the cluster know where the binary files are for each instance on the new nodes? In a nutshell, how do i install sql server 2005 for 2 new nodes in an existing 4 node cluster for multiple instances ? Thanx

Performance Difference Between SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition And Enterprise Edition
Dear All,We have a database which contains many tables which have millions ofrecords. When We attach the database with MS SQL Server 2005 StandardEdition Server and run some queries (having joins, filters etc.) thenthey take very long time to execute while when We execute same querieson Enterprise Edition then they run 10 times faster than on standardedition. Our database does not use any features which are present in EnterpriseEdition and not present in Standard Edition. We want to know what arethe differences between Standard Edition and Enterprise Edition forperformance. Why should we go for Enterprise Edition when StandardEdition has all the features required. We are presently using evaluation versions of SQL Server 2005 Standardand Enterprise Editions. Thanks and regards,Nishant Sainihttp://www.simplyjava.com

I receive the following error: SQL Server Setup has encountered the following problem: [Microsoft][SQL Native Client][SQL Server]The certificate cannot be dropped because one or more entities are either signed or encrypted using it.. To continue, correct the problem, and then run SQL Server Setup again. This installation does not have encryption enabled, so I do not undersand the error or how to correct it. After rebooting the SQL instance appears to be upgraded to Enterprise, but it cannot be upgraded to SP2. Thanks,

SQL 2005 Standard To Enterprise Edition Upgrade On Existing Three-node Cluster
Current set-up: three node cluster running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition SP2 with two instances of SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition SP2. Virtual node 1: Standard Edition, default instance, Database Engine only Virtual node 2: Standard Edition, named instance, Database Engine, Analysis Services and Integration Services Physical node A: Prefered node for virtual node 1 Physical node B: Failover node for both virtual node 1 and 2 (thus having two installations of Standard Edition) Physical node C: Prefered node for virtual node 2 We started off with this set-up because there was no need for Enterprise features, and SQL 2005 supports failover clustering with two nodes in Standard Edition. Saved a bundle of cash, so everybody's happy. Now we need to run a solution on virtual node 2 that requires Enterprise features in Analysis and Integration Services, so an edition upgrade is required on virtual node 2. I have done some research and found several edition upgrade examples, but none that match the above scenario. We are running production on these machines, so I can't risk experimenting with command line options, I have to be right the first time. Is it possible to mix two editions of SQL Server 2005 in one cluster? Can I upgrade virtual node 2 to Enterprise but leave virtual node 1 at Standard? What procedure do I have to follow to upgrade all three components of virtual node 2 to Enterprise Edition on both physical node B and C? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Change From Developer Edition To Enterprise Edition Of SQL Server 2005 64 Bit
We have an existing installation of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition (64bit) that we are ready to go live with and would like to change the edition to Enterprise Edition (64bit). We have purchased all the appropriate licenses. We would like to avoid UN-installing the Developer Edition and RE-installing the Enterprise Edition. There must be some way to change a registry key, provide your serial number via a command line utility or re-run the setup with the license key provided and direct it to just change the edition from Developer to Enterprise and not change any of the other settings like service account, sa account, collation, etc. Any help is most appreciated. Thank you, Matt

Do I HAVE To Have IIS Installed To Use SQL Server Express 2005? And Do I Have To Install SQLE2K5 On A Server?
Hi, I'm an absolute beginner trying to learn SQL and Visual Basic/Visual Web developer. I've downloaded SQL Express 2005 and want to install it on my laptop (Dell XPS, 2gb Ram) so that I can start doing the tutorials (for SQL and VB/VWS). I dont want any connection to the internet - i only want to have it on my local pc. I'm confused as I 'm sure I read that I dont need to have the IIS service running, and that it wont require a server...however, I keep reading that IIS, and a server is a MUST, and for installing SQLE2005. I'm so confused, and frustrated that I dare'nt install SQLE2005... ...Can anyone put me out of my misery??? All advice greatly appreciated. SQLEB

No Services Installed With SQL Server 2005 Enterprise On Windows XP SP2
Hello, I started out with SQLExpress and that installed just fine. After going through some books about SQL, I found out the limitations to SQLExpress and realized that I would need the full version if I was to further my education on this. (analysis services, integration services, etc etc.) I uninstalled SQLExpress and downloaded and installed SQL Server 2005 (Enterprise Edition I believe). I have installed SQL Server 2005 and I went to go connect. It says it requires a Server Name. So I put the local name of the computer in there and came back with an Error 40. During the troubleshooting of what is causing this error I discovered there are no Services installed from SQL Server 2005. They were removed when I removed SQLExpress and not reinstalled when I installed SQL Server 2005. I checked in both the Services Icon in Administrative Tools and in the SQL Server Configuration Manager. This would account for my not being able to connect to a local server. How do I bring them back. I have uninstalled and reinstalled SQL Server 2005 3 times now. It doesn't bring them back. Now, apparently Enterprise edition does not run on Windows XP Pro SP2. Is there anyway around this? I heard something about a manual installation from the CD but I didn't understand what he was attempting to say. http://www.dbtalk.net/microsoft-public-sqlserver-setup/no-services-components-installed-292167.html Thanks, Wayne

Migration From SQL 2000 Enterprise Server To The SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 Bit-Itanium Server)
We are migration few database from SQL 2000 Enterprise Server to the SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 bit-Itanium Server) Problem : - The performance difference observer was not much (Just 15-18%) - The CPU Utilization goes to 100% immediately, when the software login screen appears and it sustains in between 90% to 100% - Multi-User Access (3 or more concurrent users), the sql performance is tremendously slow. Steps followed for Migration: - We have used the backup and restore method to migrate the data from SQL 2000 Enterprise Server to the SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 bit-Itanium Server). - We ran the DBCC DBREINDEX for each affected tables - We executed the sp_updatestats procedure for all the tables - Upgraded the DB compatibility version to 90 - Installed the SQL 2005 Enterprise Server (64 bit-Itanium Server) Service pack 2. One thing that we observed, was the memory usage, on SQL 2000 the sqlservr.exe uses around 1.5 GB where as on the SQL 2005 its just 120 MB. A normal select query on 2000 Server took 11-12 sec, having 10 lac records, and the same query on 2005 took 1 min (3-5 sec CPU process taken by sqlservr and rest by the Sever Management Studio. The only differance noted was that on 2000 the entire data was displayed at one go where as in 2005 the data was displayed at the 1st sec, and was filling the rest in the buffer, and to finally display entire data it took 1 min. Also when we run this query select * from sys.dm_os_sys_info one column os_priority_class shows a value = 32 ? what does this means. In the MSSQLSERVER SERVICES, properties, there is a parameter displaying value Advanced > Running Under 64 bit OS = No ? what does this means. Could anyone pls suggest as to how to increase the sqlservr.exe memory area, and also how the enhance the performance.

Vista X64 Ultimate + SQL 2005 Enterprise Edition (fresh Install)
Hi Everyone, I was playing around with SQL2k5 Express, but decided to download Enterprise using my MSDN subscription. I installed it, but none of the services are running. I don't understand why? I've checked the requirments and I notice that Vista x64 is not on the list for compatible OS's. I do get this when trying to install: - SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility (Warning) Messages SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility Some components of this edition of SQL Server are not supported on this operating system. For details, see 'Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2005' in Microsoft SQL Server Books Online. Also, during the install, Componoents to Install: All the services are greyed out... is that because they can't be installed or because they're going to be installed by default? Anyone else have it running on Vista Ultimate x64? Am I doing something wrong or does it just not install on this version of Vista? Cheers, Mike Avelar

Upgrading A SQL Server 2000 Cluster To A SQL Server 2005 Cluster
We're upgrading a SQL Server 2000 cluster (Active/Passive) running on Windows 2000 Server to a SQL Server 2005 Cluster running on Windows Server 2003. We can't purchase new hardware and we have no spare hardware. We also need to move from Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 Server at the same time. We want to keep downtime to a bare minimum. What we were thinking was the following steps... Anyone try this? 1. Break the link between the servers. 2. Install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on one side along with SQL Server 2005. While this step is running, the active node would still be live on Windows 2000 Server and SQL Server 2000 serving our customers. 3. Restore a copy of a backup from the active production side to the node we're upgrading and at that point we would bring the active node down, switching the active node to be the newly upgraded server. 4. As a final step, the old active node would now have the link to it broken, we would install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on it and sql server 2005. At this point we would bring it back into the cluster and the cluster would be complete again. Thoughts?

Change Sql Server 2000 Enterprise To Standard Edition
Hi, One of our main servers running on SQL Server 2000 Enterprise edition which has transactional replications on it which replicates to other servers running on the SQL Server 2000 Enterprise edition as well. Due to Hardware problems the server is being migrated to a new machine but the client has installed SQL Server 2000 standard edition on the new machine. We will be using a two processor cpu with 4GB RAM and we are also not planning about clustering. Is there any problem if i migrate the server in Standard Edition will the replications work properly between Standard and Enterprise editions. What other complications can be there if i switch over to standard edition from enterprise edition Thanks in ADVANCE Jacx
