Remote Management Of Sql Server 2000

One of my clients is upgrading to Sql 2000. I currently administer her server using a SQL 7 interface but I will need to upgrade that interface to sql 8 now to be able to give her the same level of support. How do I go about installing the required clients on my desktop in such a way as to not interfere with my own installation of MSDE?

I use Windows NT workstation 4. If I have a choice do I install developer's edition of SQL2000 or personal edition?

We also have pcanywhere access but this is too slow and unsure for my money.

Thank you,
Bo Graham

Remote Management Of A SQL Server 2005
Hello,

One thing I noticed is that Network connections to SQL Server 2005 databasees, updates and other thinks like Insert, Delete via remote are never covered, especially for new programmers. You see, new programmers like myself need special attention. The simplest thing is a big thing to the new programmer. This is why I would like to see a Forum or Topic that looks after the new programmer for remotely connecting to SQL Server 2005 from VB.Net or C#.

Thanks.

SQL Server Express Database.mdf - Remote Management
Hi,
I have installed an ASP.NET 2.0 application which uses a SQL Server Express database file on a client's network.  I am able to connect to my client's network remotely over the internet.  I would like to know if there's a way - and if so, how - to manage the Database file remotely.
I have VWD Express, SQL Server Manager Studio Express and a trial version of SQL Server 2005 on my development machine.
Thanks very much.

SQL Server - Remote Command Line Management
As a Sys Admin, I was wondering - if I have admin rights to a Win2k machinethat is hosting SQL Server 2000, do I have the ability using anycommand-line tools such as OSQL or ISQL to add, delete, or change accountsregistered in SQL Server for the various databases if I don't have access toa specific account within SQL Server?I ask, because the question that came up was - what if we have a DBA leaveunder less than amicable circumstances? Could I, someone who has adminrights on the machine, be able to log into that machine remotely and somehowvia command line (I don't maintain active SQL clients centrally), change theSA password, remove an account, and/or add an account with sysadmin rights, etc? Thanks in advance for any help -

Secure Remote Management On Shared SQL Server
I am trying to get my hosting company to provide a way to make secure encrypted connections from my desktop (where I am using Enterprise Manager and Aqua Data Studio) to their shared MS SQL Server.

I've seen some references to SSH, but I don't understand how this works or how the host would implement it. I also read that an SSL certificate can be installed on SQL Server, but it doesn't seem as if EM or ADS can make SSL connections to SQL Server. (In case it makes any difference for either of these solutions, the hosting company has port 1433 open, and will not close it because some clients connect to the DB server from web apps on their own intranets.)

Finally, if a web-based admin is used instead (like phpMyAdmin for MySQL), then which machine is the software installed on? Can it be on a web server that makes a local connection to the DB server or does it have to be on the DB machine? E.g., if I had a VPS or dedicated server at the same hosting company would I be able to install web-based admin software which would then connect to the host's shared SQL Server?

Anyway, my host is giving incomprehensible (to me) objections to all of these ideas. Is there a reasonably simple way to do this on a shared DB server?

Error Connecting To Remote Server Using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express
Dear All,

I am trying to connect to a remote sql server 2005. So I have install the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express. When I try to connect I get the error below.

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53). Can some one please help. I have even port no 1533 on my pc. Thanks.

Vista Business ODBC/DSN To Remote Windows 2000 Server / SQL 2000
Hi,
Just upgraded some development desktops to Vista Business. However we need

Trying to setup an ODBC system DSN on our Vista Business local desktop we get the
following errors -

-START ERROR WINDOW-

SQL Server Error: 772
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen

Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 18
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]SSL Security Error
-END ERROR WINDOW-

Any help greatly appreciated as this is stopping us from making
database/table connections etc. We've checked the firewall setup and all is well there.

PS - we can still connect fine using XP or windows 2000 desktops and their
local DSNs.

we will update the old SQL Server 2000 databases to SQL Server 2005 when we are ready to use 2005 SQL Server.

Questions:
1. Any expected problems to upgrade old 2000 databases to new 2005 SQL Server?
2. I have installed both 2005/Management Studio Express and 2000/Enterprise Manager in my PC.  Any expected

Remote SP In SQL Server 2000
I am facing problem when "Calling a remote stored procedure from inside a local stored procedure" in SQL Server 2000, but the same works fine in SQL
7.0.

Here are the details:

Server A:- Having SQL 2000 installed

Here we are executing a stored procedure "getPlan" with parameters '3129 ','1834 '

This sp, in turn calls another sp on server B and the result of that is inserted into a temporary table.
For e.g.:
insert into #temp1
exec ServerB.Database1.dbo.StoredProcedure1 '3129 ', '1834 '

Server B:- Having SQL 2000 installed
Has the SP StoredProcedure1 in Database1.

Both of them is being accessed with the same user id and password.

Note:- These SP works fine in SQL Server 7.0.

This does not give any error but keeps on running in loop.

I *think* its running because there is the'sqlservr.exe' process running, and during installation there is no issues. When I open SQL Server Management Studio, I choose 'Database Engine', thenmy local Servername with Windows Authentication. How To Stop / Start Sql Server 2000 Using Management Studio
Hi
I have upgraded my local to sql server 2005, but still need to access the remote instance which is still at version 2008/8.0.
Enterprise Manager has been removed (by the SQL server 2005 installation)
Does anyone know how I can restart older version of SQL server instance (ie 2000/8.0) using SQL server Management Studio?

I don't have admin access on the server which the sql remote instance is hosted.  Can get around it by asking the sys admin guy to do it for now but would prefer to continue to be able to do it myself.
SQL Server Configuration Manager can only manage SQL server 2005 versions - a nice little caveat!

Is there a way to stop/start remote services using 'net stop/start'? - without having to write code....
I'll continue to search for a solution, but if someon can point me in the right direction, I'd be most greatful.

RS 2000: Cannot Connect To Remote SQL Server
Hi there,

I have two hosted servers. Server 1 is a w2k3 server which we want to use as our web server. Server 2 is a w2k server with sql 2000 installed.

On Server 1 i'm trying to install SQL Reporting Services 2000. When i get to the Report server database setup, I put the Server 2 name in the sql server instance. I leave report server as the default name and in the credentials I use a sql login account that I setup on Server 2 with dbo rights.

When I click next, I always receive the following: Cannot connect to the sql server instance.

I have the right ports open, I can setup a odbc connection using the same credentials. I can't seem to figure it out.

Any suggestions please?

I have named pipes and tcp protocols enabled on my sql server.

I have only one instance of sql installed on my Server 2.

Error Connecting To Remote SQL 2000 Server
I'm experiencing a problem connecting to a SQL 2000 server through my ASP code.  My connection string is as follows:
<add name="TheConnectionString" connectionString="driver={Sql Server};provider=MSDASQL;server=10.0.1.42;database=dbname;uid=*********;pwd=*********" providerName="System.Data.Odbc" />
The problem doesn't occur when I run my ASP code from my workstation using VS.NET's builtin webserver.  It makes the connections and executes the CRUD commands successfully.  However, when I publish my site to the webserver (which resides on 10.0.1.16) it fails out with the following error:
System.Data.Odbc.OdbcException: ERROR [08001] [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.ERROR [01000] [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).
I've verified that the webserver can talk to the DB server by connecting to the remote DB server through SQL Enterprise Manager running locally on the webserver.  If I try to do this with a DSN I get the same results.  I get the same error from any other webserver on the internal network.  The difference between my workstation and the internal network is that I'm using a VPN to connect to our internal network while the webservers are physically connected to it.  Firewalling isn't the issue in this case because the webservers and DB server are on a trusted network.  I've seen other ways of connecting to the DB server including using Named Pipes (which I would rather not do because I don't want to setup a named pipe on the production db server).
I'm relatively new to ASP.NET 2.0, so the above connection string is an adaptation of some old ASP code.  If anybody has any suggestions on a better way to construct this connection string, please let me know.  I've been racking my brains trying to get this to work outside of the devel env.

SQL Server 2000 Enable Remote Connections
Hi guys
Apologies if this is the wrong place to be posting this but I have posted on a few forums and have not had any usable answers to this question, so I am hoping you guys will be able to help me.
I have 2 servers that are on the same domain. My ASP.NET application is running off the first which has .NET 2.0 installed, and I have an SQL Server 2000 db on the other. Whenever I try to connect I get the following error:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
The connection works when I run the project in VS Development Server on my work computer, but as soon as I upload to the server I get this error.
I have scoured Google but all of the sites I come across are for SQL Server 2005 and are just not suitable for solving the issue on 2000.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I cannot continue my current project until this issue is resolved.

Error Connecting To Remote SQL Server 2000 From ASP.NET 2.0
My environment is Windows Server2003, ASP.NET 2.0, SQL Server 2000 using SQL authentication (names of DB's, sql id's, passwords are identical on both servers)
My web application successfully connects to my database  the web app and the DB are both on the same server (10.144.25.9).This connection string works:
<add name="DefaultDataTierConnectionA" connectionString="Data Source=10.144.25.9,1433; Network Library=DBMSSOCN; Initial Catalog=9D_SQL; User ID=******; Password=******" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
PROBLEM:
The problem occurs when the DB is mpved to the remote  SQL Server (10.144.25.10). I use almost the identical connection string except for the IP address which is changed to the remote machine. The db name, user, password is same on remote machine as on the local, so everything should work but does'nt. This connection string fails:
 <add name="DefaultDataTierConnectionA" connectionString="Data Source=10.144.25.10,1433; Network Library=DBMSSOCN; Initial Catalog=9D_SQL; User ID=******; Password=******" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
error (odd error in that I'm connecting to SQL 2000?)  -
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.)
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. There is no DBA on this project, I'm not sure this is a SQL Server set up problem?

Why do the object views suck? And most important, why is the documentation  the worst software documentation I have EVER SEEN?!
Things that were easy in Enterprise Manager with Client Network Utility and Query Analyzer seem impossible, difficult, or maybe just hidden in Management Studio. If it is there, the documentation sure doesnt tell you how to find it.

Add/Edit/Delete Records With Remote SQL Server 2000 Database
Using ASP.net 2.0 or Visual Web Developer Edition 2005 I could not find a single example with Datagrid Control or Form View Control, to achieve the basic functionality ofAdd/Edit/Delete Records with Remote SQL Server 2000 Database. When I searched for these examples I found many videos and examples using local database and in learning path of Visual web express editions, very goodexamples and videos using local SQL Server 2005 database, BUT not with the remote database.
My question Is it possible to get the basic functionality of Add/Edit/Delete Records with Remote SQL Server 2000 Database using ASP.Net 2.0 Datagrid and FormView controls?
This question looks like, a lazy developer question!! but, in my learning path I found GREAT videos in Visual Studio Web Developer Express edition and learned simple way of drag and drop the controls assign create local database and their connections, and few clicks to add/edit/delete records using datagrid and formview controls. In real life those are not much useful because many of web interfaces are with sql server 2000 and we need to convert them into ASP.Net. Similarly I wanted to drag and drop couple of controls and less coding etc. and accomplish basic functionality of add/edit/delete records using remote database sql server 2000.
If possible please help me out.
Wondering is it possible to get the functionality of add/edit/delete records using datagrid/formview with remote sql server 2000, the way they explained in bigginers learning videos ... I am referring to (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/express/aa700802.aspx)
If possible and you think it is possible please guide me to that URL where I can learn the great functionalty n implement..!!

SQL Server Management Express Studio Management Tools

I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.
