SELECT Then DELETE Versus Extra Clause In SELECT
Far below (in section "original 3 steps"), you see the following:
1. a temp table is created
2. some data is inserted into this table
3. some of the inserted data is removed based on a join with the same
table that the original select was made from
In my opinion, there is no way that the join could produce more rows
than were originally retrieved from viewD. Hence, we could get rid of
the DELETE step by simply changing the query to be:
INSERT INTO #details ( rec_id, orig_corr, bene_corr )
SELECT rec_id, 0, 0
FROM viewD
WHERE SOURCE_SYS NOT IN ( 'G', 'K' )
AND MONTH( VALUE_DATE_A8 ) = MONTH( @date )
AND YEAR( VALUE_DATE_A8 ) = YEAR( @date )
AND INMESS NOT LIKE '2__' ---- the added line
===== original 3 steps (mentioned above) =====
CREATE TABLE #details (
rec_id UNIQUEIDENTIFIER PRIMARY KEY NOT NULL,
orig VARCHAR(35) NULL,
bene VARCHAR(35) NULL,
orig_corr TINYINT NULL,
bene_corr TINYINT NULL
)
DELETE d
FROM #details d
JOIN viewD v ON ( d.rec_id = v.rec_id )
WHERE INMESS LIKE '2__'

Is It Possible To Re-reference A Column Alias From A Select Clause In Another Column Of The Same Select Clause?
Example, suppose you have these 2 tables(NOTE: My example is totally different, but I'm simply trying to setupthe a simpler version, so excuse the bad design; not the point here)CarsSold {CarsSoldID int (primary key)MonthID intDealershipID intNumberCarsSold int}Dealership {DealershipID int, (primary key)SalesTax decimal}so you may have many delearships selling cars the same month, and youwanted a report to sum up totals of all dealerships per month.select cs.MonthID,sum(cs.NumberCarsSold) as 'TotalCarsSoldInMonth',sum(cs.NumberCarsSold) * d.SalesTax as 'TotalRevenue'from CarsSold csjoin Dealership d on d.DealershipID = cs.DealershipIDgroup by cs.MonthIDMy question is, is there a way to achieve something like this:select cs.MonthID,sum(cs.NumberCarsSold) as 'TotalCarsSoldInMonth',TotalCarsSoldInMonth * d.SalesTax as 'TotalRevenue'from CarsSold csjoin Dealership d on d.DealershipID = cs.DealershipIDgroup by cs.MonthIDNotice the only difference is the 3rd column in the select. Myparticular query is performing some crazy math and the only way I knowof how to get it to work is to copy and past the logic which isgetting out way out of hand...Thanks,Dave

SELECT INSERT INTO Other Table With Extra Values
Hi, I've got a table with trialsubscriptions. When someone orders a trialsubscription he has to fill in a form. With the values in the form I like to fill a database with some extra fields from the trialsubscription table. I get those extra fields with a datareader. But when I insert I can't use the same datareader (its an insert), I can't make two datareaders because I have to close the first one etc. Does someone had the same problem and has some example code (or make some :-)) Some keywords are also possible! Find Versus Select Error In SQL Express.
I am trying to look up records by the first letter of the last name in SQL Express ADO recordsets. "Select * from people where people.lastname like 'a%'" works correctly. (a*) works also. ptRs.movefirst PtRs.Find "lastname LIKE 'a%'", 0, adSearchForward Does not work, does not find anything, but if I use 'a %' ('a<space>%') it finds the first last name starting with a. Why does a% not work. Can you not use wild characters in Find Statements in SQL Express?

It reproducible on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 - 8.00.2039 (Intel X86) May 3 2005 23:18:38 Copyright (c) 1988-2003 Microsoft Corporation Developer Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2) and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3042.00 (Intel X86) Feb 9 2007 22:47:07 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Developer Edition on Windows NT 5.1 (Build 2600: Service Pack 2) In both cases database collation is SQL_Latin1_General_CP1251_CS_AS If I check quieries above on database with SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS collation then it works fine again. Select With IN Clause
Hi SQL Experts, i have a strange problem i have a variable which stores some values(ID) with single quote (so that i can use directlt inside the IN Clause of SELECT Declare @DMSIDs AS VARCHAR(1000) -- variable declare, Select @DMSIDs = '''DMS00046847'',''DMS00048305''' -- for test putting 2 correct values with escape characters Select * from issue where id in (@DMSIDs) -- valid statment, but does not return any data Select * from issue where id in ('DMS00046847','DMS00048305') -- same above constant value this returns data, but putting the values in varaible then trying fails. The reason is i have a master table called issue and have another table [delta] where a particular column will store all the ID's of the issue table comma separated with single quote and i wanted to use something like below in my actual application Select * from issue where ID in (Select distinct delta_ID from Delta_branch where date = getdate()) but since the above example with variable is not returning any data i wonder if such is possible in any other ways. thank you for reading and helping me.

Problems With Select Clause With Except?
Hi there, I'm preparing a query and am having problems displaying the right content. There is only one table i am dealing with, however there are 2 fields that a check needs to be made on to see if they exist or not. Working portion of the query: SELECT * FROM tblVehicles WHERE (Make = 'audi') AND (Model = 'A4') AND (YearRange = '02-05') AND (SubModel = '3.0L') AND (Factory_Wheel_Diameter = '17') this returns 2 records: record 1 74, AUDI, A4, 3.0L, 02-05, fwd and 4X4, 17, 5-112, 16,X43659,19, null, null, null, 16, AVW659A(9), 219 record 2 73, AUDI, A4, 3.0L, 02-05, fwd and 4X4, 17, 5-112, null, null, null, null, null,null,17, AVW759A(9), 219 the second record is the one i need to have eliminated. i have tired adding: and (MAW_Wheel is not null) and (OEMWheel is not null) to my sql statement, but this returns no records. I have also tried using the except, not in, etc.. Seems like i need to combine those 2 values and select records when those 2 values are not both null only, but no matter what I try, i get it wrong. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks,

DateField (Index field) Detail: Field1 (unique key) Field2 (unique key) more fields.... The master has 100 thousand records and the detail has 100 million records. If I had a statment "Select.....From Master, Detail" what would be the best way to write the where clause? Would one of the following where clauses run faster than the other based on the number of records in the tables? Optimising Select Statements Which Has A ‘LIKE’ Where Clause.
Hi all I have been doing some development work in a large VB6 application. I have updated the search capabilities of the application to allow the user to search on partial addresses as the existing search routine only allowed you to search on the whole line of the address. Simple change to the stored procedure (this is just an example not the real stored proc): From: Select Top 3000 * from TL_ClientAddresses with(nolock) Where strPostCode = ‘W1 ABC’ To: Select Top 3000 * from TL_ClientAddresses with(nolock) Where strPostCode LIKE ‘W1%’ Now this is when things went a bit crazy. I know the implications of using ‘with(nolock)’. But seeing the code is only using the ID field to get the required row, and the database is a live database with hundreds of users at any one time (some updating), I think a dirty read is ok in this routine, as I don’t want SQL to create a shared lock. Anyway my problem is this. After the change, the search now created a Shared Lock which sometimes locks out some of the live users updating the system. The Select is also extremely SLOW. It took about 5 minutes to search just over a million records (locking the database during the search, and giving my manager good reason to shout abuse at me). So I checked the indexes. I had an index set on: strAddressLine1, strAddressLine2, strAddressLine3, strAddressLine4, strPostCode. So I created an index just for the strPostCode (non clustered). This had no change to the ‘Like select’ what so ever. So I am now stuck. 1)Is there another way to search for part of a text field in SQL. 2)Does ‘Like’ comparison use the index in any way? If so how do I set this index up? 3)Can I stop a ‘Shared Lock’ being created when I do a ‘like select’? 4)Do you have any good comebacks I could tell the boss after his next outburst of abuse (please not so bad that he sacks me). Any advice truly appreciated.

Use A Variable Along With The FROM Clause In SELECT Statement
I have a table 'table_list' which contains two columns, table_name and a record_count. This table stores a list of tables and their corresponding record counts. What I am trying to do is, to be able to write a select statement, that can read each table name in the 'table_name' column, execute a select count(*) for the same, and update its record_count with the result of select count(*). This is the code in my procedure.. DECLARE @tab_list CURSOR set @tab_list = CURSOR FOR select * from table_list OPEN @tab_list DECLARE @tab_name varchar(256) DECLARE @rec_cnt int FETCH NEXT FROM @tab_list INTO @tab_name, @rec_cnt select count(*) from @tab_name This select is looping around along with FETCH till all the table names are exhausted and their counts are updated from the cursor back into the table. Problem is that, I am not able to use select count(*) from @tab_name, and its not accepting a variable there. Please help me to construct the select statement that is similiar to x=<table name> select * from x where x is a variable and the table name gets substituted. what is the syntax for it ?

Select Inner Join With Where Clause Problems
Hello All, I have a question about a Select over 2 Tables, with the Following Scenario (Not all Products (ARTICULOS) haves CARAC's on the CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS table): Picture of the tables here: http://www.pci-baleares.com/pantallazoSql.jpg We have per example 7 Slots (Motherboard, CPU, VGA Card, RAM, TOWER, etc...) When we fill the Slot with a CPU-> Then we open the Slot for VGA CARD, we do the Followin Select: SELECT dbo.ARTICULOS.* FROM dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS INNER JOIN dbo.ARTICULOS ON dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO = dbo.ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO Ok it brings up ALL Graphic Cards because they dont depends on CPU Now we go to the Motherboard Slot And we make the following Select to obtain the compatible Motherboards: SELECT dbo.ARTICULOS.* FROM dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS INNER JOIN dbo.ARTICULOS ON dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO = dbo.ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO WHERE ((dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.ID_CARAC = 7) AND (dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.VALOR = 'PCI-E')) AND ((ID_CARAC = 1) AND (VALOR = '775')) We check the motherboards if they support PCI-E (because we selected a Graphic card of that, and SOCKET 775 because the CPU) But SQL return 0 Rows, if we do the following Select: SELECT dbo.ARTICULOS.* FROM dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS INNER JOIN dbo.ARTICULOS ON dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO = dbo.ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO WHERE ((dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.ID_CARAC = 7) AND (dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.VALOR = 'PCI-E')) OR SELECT dbo.ARTICULOS.* FROM dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS INNER JOIN dbo.ARTICULOS ON dbo.CFG_CARAC_ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO = dbo.ARTICULOS.ID_ARTICULO WHERE ((ID_CARAC = 1) AND (VALOR = '775')) It return Rows, it happens just if the Where clause haves more as 1 specifications... I have related two tables: <Content> and <ContentLocalized> <Content> |----- [ContentId] Type=UniqueIdentifier PK | [ContentName] Type=NVarChar(100) | | <ContentLocalized> | [ContentLocalizedId] Type=UniqueIdentifier PK | -------> [ContentId] Type=UniqueIdentifier FK | [ContentCulture] Type=NVarChar(5) | [ContentHtml] Type=NVarChar(MAX) Basically I want to create 3 stored procedures: 1. SELECT [ContentHtml] Given [ContentName] and [ContentCulture] 2. DELETE a content in <Content> and all its dependencies in <ContentLocalized> given [ContentName] 3. DELETE a content record in <ContentLocalized> given [ContentName] and [ContentCulture] I allready have an Access Query for (1) but I don't think I should try to use it in SQL: SELECT ContentLocalized.ContentHtml FROM Content INNER JOIN ContentLocalized ON Content.ContentId=ContentLocalized.ContentId WHERE (((ContentLocalized.ContentCulture)=[@ContentCulture]) AND ((Content.ContentName)=[@ContentName])); Thank You Very Much, Miguel

ADO Select/delete Block
Using ADO 2.1, NT 4 sp5, both SQL 6.5 & 7.0 Using psuedo code: Enherited Code: ---------- set MyRecordSet = MyConnection.Execute "Select * from MyTable" MyConnection.Execute "delete * from MyTable where MyIdentityColumn = " + MyRecordSet!MyIdentityColumn MyRecordSet.moveNext ---------- The fixed code created MyRecordSet with a static cursor & optimistic locking and the fixed code did the moveNext before the delete (storing the MyRecordSet!MyIdentityColumn value in a variable before the moveNext and using the variable in the delete statement.) My two questions are related: Why did the enherited code ever work without blocking or a 'deadly embrace'? Why did it suddenly start causing a 'deadly embrace'? TIA Lee

Turning SELECT Into A DELETE
I've constructed the SELECT statement to show the rows I want - and it shows 189 rows. Now I want to delete these rows. Here is the SELECT statement: SELECT tblinqty.* FROM tblinqty LEFT JOIN tblmporder ON tblinqty.linkidsub = tblmporder.orderno WHERE tblmporder.orderno IS NULL and tblinqty.transtype = '0' and tblinqty.linkid = 'MP' If I change the statement to "select * from tblinqty where exists ()", putting the above command inside the (), it returns over 12,000 rows! My intention is to change the SELECT into a DELETE by replacing the "select *" with a "DELETE" - but if I do that it will delete the wrong rows. How is the easiest way to turn the above successful SELECT statement, which yields 189 rows, into a DELETE statement which also deletes the same 189 rows? I've tried changing the statement to a WHERE, thinking it would be easier to change to a DELETE, but the following yields 0 rows: SELECT tblinqty.* FROM tblinqty WHERE tblinqty.linkidsub = tblmporder.orderno AND tblmporder.orderno IS NULL and tblinqty.transtype = '0' and tblinqty.linkid = 'MP'

Combing In A Cursor, A Select Statement With The WHERE Clause Stored In A Variable
Hi I am ramesh here from go-events.com I am using sql mail to send out emails to my mailing list I have difficulty combining a select statement with a where clause stored in a variable inside a cursor The users select the mail content and frequency of delivery and i deliver the mail I use lots of queries and a stored procedure to retrieve thier preferences. In the end i use a cursor to send out mails to each of them. Because my query is dynamic, the where clause of my select statement is stored in a variable. I have the following code that does not work For example DECLARE overdue3 CURSOR LOCAL FORWARD_ONLY FOR SELECT DISTINCT Events.E_Name, Events.E_SDate, Events.E_City, Events.E_ID FROM Events, IndustryEvents + @sqlquery2 OPEN overdue3 I get an error message at the '+' sign which says, cannot use empty object or column names, use a single space if necessary How do I combine the select statement with the where clause? Help me...I need help urgently

Using The ORDER BY Clause When The Ordered Column Is Not Needed In The SELECT Statement
Greetings, I have a C# application that calls a stored procedure to query the database (MSSQL 2005). I only have one field/column returned from the query but I need that column ordered. How do I use the ORDER BY clause without returning the index column which does the sorting? The first example is NOT what I want. I want something that works like the second example which only returns the 'Name' column. ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[MyProcedure] AS BEGIN SELECT DISTINCT A.Name, A.index FROM ... ... ORDER BY A.[Index], A.Name ASC END ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[MyProcedure] AS BEGIN SELECT DISTINCT A.Name FROM ... ... ORDER BY A.[Index] END Thanks

Mapping A String Field To Boolean Output In SELECT Clause
Hello, I am facing a problem in a SELECT clause which i cannot solve. In my SQL table ("myTable") i have a few columns ("Column1", "Column2", "TypeColumn"). When I select different columns of the table, instead of getting the value of TypeColumn, i would like to get a boolean indicating whether its value is a certain string or not. For example, the TypeColumn accepts only a number of selected strings: "AAA", "BBB", "CCC". when i do a select query on the table, instead of asking for TypeColumn i would like to ask a boolean value of 1 if TypeColumn is "AAA" and 0 if TypeColumn is "BBB" or "CCC". Also, i would like to make this query while I am also fetching the other columns. And i would like to use one query to get all that. I thought something like thsi would work: SELECT Column1 AS Col1, Column2 AS Col2, IF(TypeColumn = "AAA", 1, 0) AS Col3 FROM myTable but this doesn't work in SQL 2005! Is it possible to do something similar in SQL 2005 using one query only? i am trying to avoid multiple queries for this. thanks a lot for your help!

Order By Clause In DECLARE CURSOR Select Statement Won't Compile
The stored procedure, below, results in this error when I try to compile... Msg 156, Level 15, State 1, Procedure InsertImportedReportData, Line 69 Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'ORDER'. However the select statement itself runs perfectly well as a query, no errors. The T-SQL manual says you can't use the keywords COMPUTE, COMPUTE BY, FOR BROWSE, and INTO in a cursor select statement, but nothing about plain old ORDER BYs. What gives with this? Thanks in advance R. Insert, Select, Update And Delete
I've got four pages with in the first page a insert, in the second a select, in the thirth a update and in the fourth a delete statement. First the values of a textbox will be inserted in the database, then the values will be shown in labels and than it is possible to edit or delete the values inserted. Every inserted item belonging to each other has one ID. The follwing values has a second ID etc. How can I make that possible?? I think that I should pass the ID's between the pages so I'm sure that I edit or delete the values that I want. So insert value 1 in page 1, show with select value 1 in page 2, edit or delete value 1 in page 3 and 4. Maybe I didn't explain it good enough for you, please tell me then!! Thanks!!

SSIS SELECT / DELETE / INSERT
I am trying to do the following for a few tables in my DB. I have an ODBC datasource and would simply like to update my DB from this datasource. I want to pull the table data from my ODBC datasource, delete any existing data in my SQL tables and then insert the data from my ODBC datasource into SQL. I am trying to create an SSIS package to do this but am not sure where to start. Any help or examples would be appreciated.
