SQL Server 2005 Installation Woes For Workstation Components And Client Tools
Hello,
I have installed successfully Microsoft SQL server 2005 in MSCS.
However the set up did not install Workstation components (client tools - SSMS etc).
I have successfully installed workstation components in one node of cluster.
However setup is giving following error while installing workstation components on other node. (From this node MS SQL server 2005 was installed).
Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools -- Error 1722. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action SqlWbSetup.5F46584E_060D_4BCB_ADEE_BD15A7BFCC2A, location: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsBinnVSShellCommon7IDESqlWb.exe, command: /setup

I did "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsBinnVSShellCommon7IDESqlWb.exe, /setup".
It executed but no error, no output.
Any gues, help in isolating issue?
Any more information required.(Media is ok. Setup has been tried after reboot. There is enough disk space.)
Regards.
Mahesh

SQL 2005 Fails To Install Workstation Components And Tools
Hello. When I install SQL Server 2005, it all goes well except that it fails to install these two: - SQLXML 4 - workstation components and tools When I try to install these two from the CD in the Setup folder of the CD 2 with the files sqlxml4.msi and sqlRun_Tools.msi (if I remember these names correctly), it gives me an error: 'Ce package d'installation n'est pas pris en charge par ce type de processeur' Sorry. My SQL CDs are in french, but it roughly translates to the message: This installation package is not taken by this processor. I thought that my hardware configuration does not meet the requirements. But I have a Pentium 4, 2Gig RAM, over 100Gig free HD space. Also I tried to install on other computers to no avail. This is a fresh install, that is, there is no previous SQL Server 2000 in it, no VS.NET 2005 or before. Nothing. I have just a fresh, new computer. Can anyone help, please? Jean

SP2 Didn't Upgrade SQL Server Tools And Workstation Components
Greetings, I thought I had applied sp2 successfully but I discovered when I tried to apply the hotfix ( sqlserver2005-kb933097-x86-enu.exe), that the SQL Server Tools and Workstation Components wasn't at the 3042 level. The recommendation in the log file is to: "Update 3152 is dependent on prerequisite update 3042. Exit setup and refer to the Knowledge Base article to find the prerequisite patch." Does anyone know where I find the prerequisite patch? Any help would be appreciated. SQL Server 2005 SP1 Installation Woes!
I am having problems installing SP1 successfully. So far I've tried it on two separate Windows 2003 server boxes running SQL Server 2005 Standard v9.0.1399. The first upgraded successfully all over services except the SQL server itself. Reporting services then failed due to database version mismatch but that was easily fixed. The other box doesn't have anything other than SQL2005 and components were upgraded but the database upgrade failed. I got the generic "send this error to microsoft" message. I've tried other suggested fixes on this board but none have worked so far. Client Installation - "existing Client Tools Only Installation"
I've been playing around with the unattended client install files sqlcli.bat and sqlcli.iss for SQL Server 2000. I've gotten into a problem were I can't run these because they cancel quickly without an error. When I try to install the client tools from the CD, I get "Setup has detected an existing client tools only installation. Please use maintenance mode to add client components" Does anyway know what portion of the registry or file system that SQL Server uses to detect an install has been done?

Workstation Components Not Available At All On SS 2005 X64 CD For X86 XP?
It appears that there is no way to install SQL Server 2005 Workstation Components on an x86 operating system (XP in this case) if you have the x64 install disks (Standard Edition). Can someone verify this? I am finding it hard to believe that workstation components for a standard Windows client environment are not distributed with the version of SQL Server that matches Windows 2003 x64. Thanks, Chris

Error Installing Workstation Components SQL 2005 Enterprise
Hello. I am trying to install only the Workstation Components portion of SQL Server 2005 and I get about halfway through and the installation errors out. The error is: EventType: sql90setup P1: installtoolsaction P2: 0xc0000006 P3: 0x78158a35 P4: 0xc0000006 P5: setup_sqlactionenginelistener.cpp@198 P6: setup.exe@2005.90.1399.0 P7: none This happens after the second disk of the installation is about halfway through installing and then it throws an error stating that "The wrong volume is in the drive. Please insert volume SQLSRVRS into drive D. Cancel, Try Again, Continue" I replace the disc with the first disc and if I pick "Continue" it will display the error above. If I pick "Try again" the installation finishes, but there are components missing from Visual Studio. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is the log file: === Verbose logging started: 3/16/2006 14:03:49 Build type: SHIP UNICODE 3.01.4000.2435 Calling process: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup Bootstrapsetup.exe === MSI (c) (58:00) [14:03:49:483]: Resetting cached policy values MSI (c) (58:00) [14:03:49:483]: Machine policy value 'Debug' is 0 MSI (c) (58:00) [14:03:49:483]: ******* RunEngine: ******* Product: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup BootstrapSetupSqlRun_Tools.msi ******* Action: ******* CommandLine: ********** MSI (c) (58:00) [14:03:49:483]: Client-side and UI is none or basic: Running entire install on the server. Applying SQL 2005 SP1 To A Local Copy Of Workstation Components
I have installed the Workstation components on my local PC, which also contains VS 2005 and SQL Express. I installed the WS components so that I could run the full blown version of SQL Management Studio from my PC, to remove SQL 2005 servers. I tried to update the Workstation components to SP1, but the SP1 package stops at the Setup Support Files, step and terminates claiming the package does not support SQL Express. I realize the package is not intended for Express, I simply need to update Management studio. I tried running the Post SP1 Tools hotfix and it complains that it will not update SP0 of the tools. I have successfully updated Express to SP1 and applied the Post hotfixes as well. Is there any way to patch just Management studio on a system with Express installed? Thank, Jim

SQL Server Management Studio Not Loading With Workstation Components
Everytime I do an install of SQL Server 2005 and I don't select to install all components (even if I make sure Workstation components and all sub components are selected) SQL Management Studio never loads. The setup completes without error however there is no SQL Management Studio anywhere on the system. I know I have searched hard for it. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I missing something? Thanks.

Unable To Install Native Client Components In SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Evaluation Version
Hi all, I have downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Evaluation Edition ISO from the following site and burned it onto a DVD. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=6931FA7F-C094-49A2-A050-2D07993566EC&displaylang=en Prior to this I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edtion. During setup I have selected all the native client components i.e. Management Studio, Business Intelligense Studio. But after the install I am not able to see them under All Programs-> Microsoft SQL Server 2005. On further searching I have come across this link http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=142941 First of all, there is no sqlrun_tools.msi under setup folder of the dvd. And also when I tried to change component from Add/Remove programs and following the instructions as specified on clicking Change Installed components all that I see are: Connectivity Components and Software Development kit. Could someone tell me how can I install Management Studio/ Business Intelligence Studio seperately? I don't want to go through the process of re-installation.

Vista SQL 2005 SP2 Client To Windows XP SQL 2005 (non-sp2) Workstation. (Take 2 W/ Workaround)
This issue has not been "resolved" as I can tell. But there is a workaround w/o using sql authentication (hate sql authentication) http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1528018&SiteID=1 I found out that it doesnt matter which combination you use for the server as long as the client is Vista... If you are using a windows account, lets say "jondoe" on your vista box acting as a sql management studio client to a sql server on an xp or w2k3 box using windows authentication.... IT WILL work if both the vista box and the xp/w2k3 box BOTH have "jondoe" accounts, and both "jondoe" account passwords are the same!!! SOOOooo.... Apparently when vista runs the program under jondoe (when you launch the shortcut) it runs it under that context (no-duh) but EVEN if you establish a network connection (using net use) beforehand with alternate credentials (lets say on the xp/w2k3 box the user is jonsmith) and then use sql management studio you are assuming that it will just use those trusted credentials.... you are wrong... it wont anymore in vista by default. WTF? Why? because apparently sql management studio 2005 no longer is allowed to retrieve stored credentials to impersonate jonsmith when connecting to the xp/w2k3 box.... this is where the infamous "no user is associated with this trusted connection". I also got this error with Visual Studio 2005 Web Express Edition... hmmm... a correlation i see? SOOOoooo... Workaround 1 (more secure): Create the windows account "jonsmith" on your vista box, set the password to the same exact password for the server's user account. then run the sql management studio application under the jonsmith account using "runas". Result: it works just as it supposed to... using windows authentication. Workaround 2 (less secure): Create the account "jondoe" on the xp/w2k3 box, set the password to the same exact password for the server's user account. then run the sql management studio application under the jonsmith account using "runas". Result: it works just as it supposed to... using windows authentication. Workaround 3: Use sql authentication. works like a charm but not as secure as 1 and 2. FYI: these apply to workgroup connections. domain computers are exempt cause security is handled by domain controllers. I think there must be a security setting (registry option) that would allow this process to work w/o the workaround, but I have yet to figure it out... I'm like a pitbull sniffing around for clues and the only leads i have is that its vista SSPI and that if there is an option, it would be in local security policy AND/OR undocumented registry option. Note: I hate workarounds unless there is a clear cut reason why we have to do it this way. Either because there was a design oops or security consideration when accounts are hijacked.... either way anyone from Microsoft have an explanation of this? Oh... firewall enabled/disabled doesnt matter, all systems patched up the yinyang and what nots do not change the end result. All I did was create matching accounts on both ends (using either workaround 1 or 2) and it worked just fine. SOOOOoooo... my question is..... why can't SQLM2K5 MS and VSWD2K5 express grab the existing alternate credentials that i've established (through net use) and run with the ball? BTW: I've tried using that "Alert Me" option below. Doesn't work. page takes a nose dive on the POST.

SQL Server 2005 Express Installation Problem: Incompatible Components From Beta Version Of .NET Framework
Hi all, Yesterday, I just downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPR.EXE) and tried to install it in my Windows XP Pro PC that is on Microsoft NT 4 LAN System. I got the following error: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CTP setup The Microfost .NET Framework 2.0 is not installed. Please install before running setup. This morning, I downloaded the NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package Beta 2 (x86) from the Microsoft Download Center and installed it in my Windows XP Pro PC. Then I tried to install the SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPR.EXE) again. This time I got a new error: SQL Server 2005 Setup has detected incompatible components from beta versions of Visual Studio, .NET Framework, or SQL Server 2005. Use ADD or Remove Programs to remove these components, and then run SQL Server 2005 Setup again. I am confused and lost in this installation problem. Was the .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package Beta 2 (x86) a wrong Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 I downloaded and installed in my PC? Where is the right Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 for the SQL Server 2005 Express? Please help and advise. Thanks in advance, Scott Chang

Vista SQL 2005 SP2 Client To Windows XP SQL 2005 (non-sp2) Workstation.
I'm trying to use SQL Management Studio to connect from a Vista SQL 2005 client w/ SP2 over to a Windows XP workstation running SQL server developer edition (non-sp2) using windows authentication. I'm already preauthenticated by network shares to the xp workstation. This worked just fine in windows xp but stop working in vista. After searching around, i found out that vista handles trusted authentication differently than windows xp due to changes in the SSPI. Logging in as sql authentication works fine. Logging in as windows authentication does not. UPDATE: I found out that two workstations running vista and sql 2005 sp2 cannot connect to each other using windows trusted authentication!!! What the heck? UPDATE: I found out that my IIS 7.0 using ASP.NET and connecting to SQL 2005 (non sp2) on a Windows 2003 server (SP1) WILL connect to the database using trusted authentication... apparently IIS can access the credentials and pass them to the sql 2005 box just fine. My Sql 2K5 SP2 tools cannot. I'm forced to use SQL authentication to the box. Same thing applies with a Windows XP SP2 box running SQL 2005 (non sp2). SQL Server 2005 Client Tools Not Shown Up In Start Menu On Windows 2003 Server
Hello, I have installed SQL server 2005 enterprise edition on Windows 2003 virtual PC (full installation). The installation went through successfully. However, after install completed, I cannot find any of the client tools under the start menu -> all programs -> Microsoft SQL server 2005 menu. The only item listed under the SQL server 2005 is Configuration Tools, which is used to configure the database server. I have tried to install the client component again (in case I didn't install them at the first place) but the installation process cannot be started since it detected that the client components have been installed already. I can also see the sql server native client running in the services. The server engine is working fine since I can connect to that sql server using another machine where I have the client tool (SQL server management studio). One of my friends has exactly the same problem. He installed the sql server 2005 Standard edition on windows 2003 server (full installation), but the client tools are not showing up in the start menu either. I also checked the location for the SQL server management studio (Microsoft SQL server/90/Tools/Binn/VSShell/Common7/IDE), there is only one folder called publicAssemblies listed under. Is this correct or something is missing? Thanks

Visual Studio 2005 Tools For SQL Server Compact Ed. Installation Problems
Hi, I've got a big problem reinstalling the just released VS2005 Tools: I've installed them, but then I've deinstalled them to first deinstall RC1 and install the just released RTM/W(?) of the runtime. But since then I was not able to reinstall the VS2005 Tools: The installer just says, that a required program for the upgradepatch is missing or another version is installed. I've also tried to reinstall SP1 of VS 2005, with the same result. BTW, I just wanna mention, that it is very complex to look through the new released Compact Edition releases. For example for the runtime it is required that the english release is installed before another localized release. But the localized releases are not called "Language Packs" (what they are) and do not verify that the english version is already installed. Also I'm interested what the recommended installation order is for installing on a developer computer eg. in German. First the VS2005 Tools or the SDK or the runtime? Thanks in advance, Klaus

Cannot Install Anything But Workstation Components Etc.
Hi, I had a perfectly good working copy of SQL Server 2005 installed. However, at some point I needed the Report Services Designer so I could edit my reports in Visual Studio. I inserted the CD and selected the feature from the list and it installed. Only problem being that it has completely removed my Management Studio and practically every other tool I didnt explicitly checked when installing the RS Designer. When I tried to run the same Setup again and check everything, it tells me that there is no change between what I have selected and what is installed, which sounds like total bs to me, since my pc doesnt have a management studio etc anymore. Out of pure misery I decided to remove my entire SQL Server installation, inc Instance, hoping to start anew and achieve the result I wanted with the least amount of frustration. I ended up here and followed it all the way: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909967 When I started reinstalling, I ran into something new. The installer refuses to let me install anything but the Workstation components, books online and development tools. All the other options are greyed out and not even available. Someone please help me get my SQL Server back up and running because I'm getting hopeless. -DeV

Uninstall SQL 2000 Workstation Components
Hey yall. I'm a DBA in a company where I do NOT have the ability tocontrol who logs into my SQL servers as administrator, so I'm lookingfor a way to uninstall the workstation components WITHOUT completelyuninstalling all of my instances. Does anyone know how to do this? All I can find is the complete removal option in add/remove, and theinstall cd setup doesn't have a remove function that I can find. Anyidea's?The reason for wanting to do this is so that every tom dick and harrythat logs in as administrator doesn't have the ability to just open EMand do what they please. I want to force people to log in fromanother box so I can get tighter control over who can access mydatabases. Any help is awesome, thanks!Joshua Austill

SQL CE 3.5 Server Tools On Vista 64 - Where's IIS Backward Compatitlity Components
I'm trying to upgrade from the SCE 3.0 server tools to the 3.5 server tools. I've uninstalled the 3.0 tools and while trying to install the 3.5 tools I get an error on the IIS requirement indicating that with IIS 7.0 I need to install the backward compatibily components and can not proceed with the install. Searching Microsoft I get hits that mention the IIS backward compatibility components, but no links on where to download them. This might be a useful link to add to the sticky with the downloads for SCE 3.5. Also, one of the requirements referneces on the SCE3.5 server tools download, indicates that the backward IIS compatibility components were supported on 32 bit OSs, no mention of 64; this also has me concerened. I'm running Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2005 on my workstation. My device has SCE 2.0, 3.0 & 3.5 on it; these all are working fine. I'm trying to upgrade everything to 3.5 so I can get rid of prior versions. From within VS2008 I can connect to SCE3.5 SDFs and have updated a couple of databases to 3.5. What I want to do is connect to the 3.5 SDFs from SQL Server 2005; which is why I am trying to install the server tools. I've got SQL 2008 installed on a VM and am able to connect to 3.5 SDFs but I'm trying to avoid the hassle of firing the VM and schlepping files across the VM boundary to work with the 3.5 SDFs. It's becoming a pain. Which is why I am trying to install the server tools. Is there a resolution to this? Can I get the server tools installed on a 64 bit Vista box? Is there a link for the backward compatibility tools? Steve

Cannot Install Workstation Components (Management Studio, etc) (ADD_LOCAL Error)
I have Vista Ultimate (IIS Enabled), SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition (downloaded and ran the SP2 Update), Visual Studio 2008. VS2008 installs no problem. When I install SQL Server 2005, I get an error when it trys to install the last part( Workstation Components, Management Studio, etc). I have tried FULLY, MANUALLY removing all SQL products and registry entries. I have used Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. I have tried Microsoft's recommended way of manually removing SQL Server 2005. If I manually run SqlRun_Tools.msi the error comes up right away. The error is: "A component that you have specified in the ADD_LOCAL property is already installed. To upgrade the existing component, refer to the template.ini and set the UPGRADE property to the name of the component." Here's the Setup Error log: http://toby.pastebin.com/f63405e24 Any help?! 2000 DTS Packages Corrupted By 2005 Client Tools?
Hi, I have many sql 2000 DTS packages that I support from my development workstation running v2000 sp4. Packages are altered on the development machine and then go through a normal release mechanisms to production via testing servers etc. I have recently installed the client tools for SQL Server 2005 on my desktop to evaluate the product. The 2005 DB instance is running on a seperate server. So, I have dev edition of sql 2000 and 2005 client tools (including BI Dev studio etc) on my workstation. I have recently had to make changes to a 2000 DTS package and used my 2000 enterprise manager to do so. No Problem- saved and tested fine on my workstation. But when I try and release it to another server, or open the package using enterprise manager from another machine that does not have sql 2005 installed - I get an error message 'Unspecified error'. This I've seen before when trying to open packages created in v2000 , using v7 or where the service packs are different between machines. Digging around my workstation and comparing some of the DLLs I know to be required to distribute DTS packages (from RDIST.txt) it seems that some of the SQL 2000 dll files have been updated by my 2005 installation. E.g DTSFFILE.DLL on my machine is 2000.85.1054.0 whilst on any 'clean' 2000 machine is at version v2000.80.760.0 Surely it cant be right that SQL 2005 has newer versions of components for SQL 2000 than is available with the latest SP for the actual product! Especially considering that the installation of 2005 does not even allow you to edit 2000 DTS packages through the management studio without a 'special' download' of the feature pack,(whihc by the way does not work very well either) So am I to conclude that you can not run side by side installations of SQL 2000 and 2005 on a single machine and expect 2000 to run as it did previously

Especially considering that the installation of 2005 does not even allow you to edit 2000 DTS packages through the management studio without a 'special' download' of the feature pack,(whihc by the way does not work very well either) So am I to conclude that you can not run side by side installations of SQL 2000 and 2005 on a single machine and expect 2000 to run as it did previously !!!
