SQL Server Management Studio Don't See Local SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition X64 On Vista Ultimate X64
SQL Server Management Studio don't see local SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition x64 on Vista Ultimate x64
Hi,
I have strange problem with SQL Server Management Studio on Vista Ultimate
x64. Nothing change after installing all newest service packs or hot fixes.
I have two running SQL servers on my local machine and all surrounding SQL
services running as well. I have turn on TCP/IP and Named pipes on both of
this servers. Actually I have reinstalled second server after first one
wasn't contactable in any way... After finished installation of second one
and after applying service packs I turn on SQL Server Management Studio and
still nothing in local servers pane when Browsing for servers to connect but
in network servers after few seconds I see one of my local servers (first one
installed) and one SQL Server 2000 on other machine (on this one I can't
connect because of time out error). Also when browsing for servers in Local
Servers I see my machine in Integration Services. Only difference between
this running services is that Integration service log on as Network Service
and all other SQL services log on as Local System account and on SQL Server
that is invisible I have also SQL Server Reporting Services running.
Services looks like this:
Name Status Startup type Log On AsSQL Server (KONGORA) Started Automatic Local System
SQL Server(MSSQLSERVER) Started Automatic Local System
SQL Server Active Directory Hel Automatic Network Service
SQL Server Agent (KONGORA) Started Automatic Local System
SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER) Started Automatic Local System
SQL Server Analysis Services (KONG Started Automatic Local System
SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQL Started Automatic Local System
SQL Server Browser Started Automatic Local System
SQL Server Full Text Search (KONG Started Automatic Local System
SQL Server Full Text Search (MSSQL Started Automatic Local System
SQL Server Integration Services Started Automatic Network Service
SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQL Started Automatic Local System
SQL Server VSS Writer Started Automatic Local System

Cannot Install Sqlserver 2005 Developer Edition With Vista Ultimate
Currently I am just trying to completely remove all Vista Ultimate's knowledge of installed instances of SQLServer 2005 Developer edition. I cannot do this for some reason. This all began when I tried to install SQLServer 2005 and it installed but I could not connect to it. Now I have two installed instances that I cannot access, after removing all SQL programs from the Programs and Features icon in the control panel. I tried running "WIndows Installer CleanUp Utility" as I read in a thread on this forum. This did not help. After going thru and removing all SQLServer programs using the "programs and features" icon in control panel... The installation process shows two installed instances of SQLServer 2005. 1) How can I completely erase all Vista Ultimate's knowledge of any SQLServer 2005 install and start over? I have downloaded SQLServer 2005 SP 2, and run it, but clearly what I should do, and what Microsoft has asked me to do are not working... 2) What should I be doing to install SQLServer 2005 Developer Edition successfully? I have been a strong supporter of Microsoft, but this is getting me very frustrated. Please help, - Chaz

How Can I Install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition's Management Studio On A Desktop Machine?
I have installed Visual Studio 2005 Prof Edition on a Vista machine and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on a Windows 2000 server. They will be used as a development environment for us. As we need to management the SQL Server 2005, we would like to install the 2005 Developer SSMS on the Vista machine such that we can manage the SQL Server 2005 developer instance installed on that Win2k machine. However, the system does not allow us to do it. We have the express edition autoamtically installed while we installed the Vistual Studio. Is there any workaround that i can still install the 2005 developer SSMS without uninstall the sql server 2005 Xpress version? Or, I have to uninstall the Xpress version before i can install the 2005 developer's SSMS? Please help!

Can You Install SQL Server 2005 On Vista Ultimate Edition?
Ive been told that you cant install SQL Server 2000/2005 on anything but a server OS (such as Windows Server 2003). How are people installing this into vista then as Longhorn is far from being released? When i try and install it into Ultimate, i only get the option to install client tools... which makes sense as the machine isnt a server. Surely people can install SQL Server 2005 in Vista though? All of the features are green ticked except the OS which has a compatabilty warning (which i expected). I feel im missing something really simple here.... Cheers Rob Macnair

Can't Connect To Local Server Instance MSSQLSERVER In SQL Server Management Studio (SQL2005 Sp2/Vista)
Can't connect to local server instance MSSQLSERVER in SQL Server Management Studio (SQL2005 sp2/Vista). SQL Server Configuration Manager reports SQL Server2005 services: SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) Running. This would indicate the name of the SQL server is "MSSQLSERVER" correct? I chose "default" instance during the install and that is the name it gave itself. I tried connecting to the server using the following for the Server Name: MSSQLSERVER and .MSSQLSERVER neither works. The only thing that works for my installation is just plain "." (no quotes) and nothing else. Can this be correct because I can't find any reference to this. Thanks.

Steps To Install 64 Bit Sql Server 2005 Standard Edition In Windows Vista 64 Ultimate
Hi I have just take my system back to the factory defaults after some unsuccessful attempts to install 64 bit and 32 bit sql server on my notebook. I am looking to use either 32 or 64 bit (I have disks for both) and I would like to get a step by step guide that will help me through the process. I tried an install of the 64 bit version, applied SP2, and it went smoothly but the report services browser didn't work. I tried to change some IIS settings but I didnt document what I changed so i was unable to undo the changes that i made when these didnt work. I tried several combinations of things but then decided that a clean install on a clean system was the best option. I need the SQL engine , reporting services, analysis services - and possibly integration services - i am not sure if i need notification services (dont know what it does anyway!) I also have vs2005 - should i install that first or after sql server 2005 SP2? Thanks Doug

Updating To SQL Server Management Studio Developer Edition Is Not Working
I got VS Pro which came with SQL Server Management Studio Developer Edition. Very exciting! However, when I go to update from SQL Server Management Studio Express to Dev Edition it says that there are tools / components already installed. I completely uninstalled everything having to do with SQL Server from my machine and tried again. It still says that the tools / components are installed. I see that there are still several instances of SQL Server still on my machine. So I tried reinstalling Express again. However, now the Configuration Manager has a snap-in that won't start. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

I've run the SQL Server setup before and after the SP2 patch I'm doing a named instance using the built-in system account with windows authentication mode. Is there any COMPLETE guide as to how to work through all these installation problems? I've gotten same results after about six attempts. Developer Limitation Under SQL 2005 Under Vista Ultimate 64 Bit
Just to be clear, I would like to know if a problem I face is due to an error on my part or a limitation on Microsoft's. In my experience (several hours-long installations, removals, reinstallations, using the skuupgrade=1 parameter from the command line, ad nauseum) I have concluded that the best one can do installing SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition from the Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition package is to get the Express Edition, (actually styled MSSMLBIZ). In particular, what I'm hoping to be able to do is program to a test database that I have from my client, which I was able to do on my XP Professional machine. But on my new Vista Ultimate 64 bit machine (which will only let me install the x64 version of SQL Server 2005), I get an instance that is characterized as SQL Server Express and generates the following error message when I try to attach to the same MDF file to which I was able to attach under my prior, XP-Pro based configuration: TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio ------------------------------ Attach database failed for Server 'ZAPHOD42MSSMLBIZ'. Any definitive answers on this apparent limitation, or useful procedural advice on installation quirks, would be appreciated (and, yes, I've spent a lot of time going through the installation/setup forum -- if the answer is there I can't find it).

Error - Installing SQL Server Developer Edition 2005 On Vista Home Premium
Hi, I have Vista Home premium edition and trying to install SQL Server developer edition 2005 as local administrator. I have already enabled IIS 7 and have Office Ultimate 2007 installed. When I run the set up program, I get a warning titled "Program Compatibility Assistant" that my Operating system may not be compatible with the version of sql server I am installing. It says after setup is complete, I should run SP2 of SQL Server 2005 with 3 buttons as "Check for solutions online", "run this program" and "cancel"... My question, should I select "run this program" and after the setup completes, download SP2 and apply the patch? I read some articles in forums that sounds like lot of issues to get sql server working on vista. Can some one direct me to correct options. This is my wife's machine so I dont want to experiment too much and blow her machine away. Please help. Thanks, Gaja

SQL Server 2005 Management Studio On Vista Issue.
Here is my setup. I have SQL Server 2005 Dev Edition with SP2 installed on Windows Vista Ultimate on my local computer. I have a development cluster running 2000 as well as several production clusters running 2000. The production clusters are accessed through an encrytped tunnel. The dilemna. I am able to connect to the clusters fine. I am also able to access the each DB without incident. My problem comes when I try to connect to DB's with a large number of tables. DB's on the same clusters with around 20 tables come back fine. I am able to start to click on the views drill down and press the stop action and it will display a small list of views. The tables view however, goes into la la land. My local Dev cluster has all the same DB's as my production clusters and has no problems returning the tables in any of the DB's. I get an "IS BUSY: Micorsoft SQL Server Managment Studio is waiting for an internal operation to complete." error and the managment studio never completes. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

SQL Server Management Studio Cannot Connect To Local Instance Of SQL Server 2005 SP2
Hello, I just installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition from my company's DVD. It was installed with the setting of using both Integrated windows authenitication as well as basic named authenication. I installed all the options too: Database Engine, Analysis Services, Reporting Services, SQL Server compact edition, and Integration Services. When I look at services there are: SQL Server Integration Services, SQL Server Analysis Services, SQL Server Reporting Services, and SQL Server Browser. All of which are running. Something that took me offguard was the installation did not ask me to provide an SA password. Other than that, the install looked like it went good. I was able to connect to the local instance of the SQL Server 2005 using the SQL Server Management Studio. I could connect with SA, or connect with Integrated Windows Authenication. Whoohoo. Off and running! As a matter of fact, for the SA account I could use any password and it would still log me in. First thing I did was I went in to the copy wizard to attempt to copy a database from a server on our network to my local box. First it asked me for the remote server. Then when I specified my local instance in the wizard, the wizard complained that my local instance was NOT SQL Server 2005. Doh! This I didn't understand. I figured maybe I need to check for MS updates. Sure enough, I found that ther was a SP2 and then a hot-fix for that SP2. I applied both. Now I cannot connect from SQL Server Management studio to my local instance of SQL Server 2005 database server. I get the following error: "An error occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2)" However, I went in to see what other services I could connect to, and here's the results: Analysis Services : OK! Reporting Services (Windows Auth/Basic/Forms) : NG "The reporting Services Instance could not be found (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient)" SQL Server Compact Edition : NG "The database cannot be found. Check the path to the database. [ File Name = CCG092 ] (SQL Server Compact Edition ADO.NET Data Provider) Integration Services : OK! I can connect to other SQL Server databases on our network. However, just not my local one. No one on the network can connect to me either. I even turned off my windows firewall and still no luck connecting to my own. So something really went wrong when I applied SP2, however, admittedly from the error message when I tried to use the copy wizard, something was probably already wrong. Any ideas? Thanks!

SQL 2008 Developer Edition Management Studio Does Not Work For Compact Edition 3.5 Databases
I am attempting to use the SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition (Management Studio) to create/manage a Compact Edition 3.5 database. Vista X64 Ultimate + SQL 2005 Enterprise Edition (fresh Install)
Hi Everyone, I was playing around with SQL2k5 Express, but decided to download Enterprise using my MSDN subscription. I installed it, but none of the services are running. I don't understand why? I've checked the requirments and I notice that Vista x64 is not on the list for compatible OS's. I do get this when trying to install: - SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility (Warning) Messages SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility Some components of this edition of SQL Server are not supported on this operating system. For details, see 'Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2005' in Microsoft SQL Server Books Online. Also, during the install, Componoents to Install: All the services are greyed out... is that because they can't be installed or because they're going to be installed by default? Anyone else have it running on Vista Ultimate x64? Am I doing something wrong or does it just not install on this version of Vista? Cheers, Mike Avelar

Local SQL Server Instances Not Showing Up On Local Servers Tab Of Management Studio Logon Screen
We have a 64-bit VM server running SQL Server 2005. The SQL Server on this particular VM server has 6 local instances installed. On the Management Studio logon screen I can type the full name of the local instance and connect to it, however if I press the drop down in the Server name field, choose Browse and select the Local Servers tab there is nothing listed under Database Engines. Any idea why the 6 local instances don't show up under Database Engines? This is preventing me from installing a vendor application because their installer looks for local SQL Server instances on this server, but if SQL Server won't even show the local instances then the installer doesn't see them either. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Craig

Sql Server 2005 Installation On Vista Ultimate
Ok guys, I am trying to install Sql server 2005 on Vista but I am still stuck with this warning message in the System Configuration Check during Sql server 2K5 installation : SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility (Warning) Messages * SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility * Some components of this edition of SQL Server are not supported on this operating system. For details, see 'Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2005' in Microsoft SQL Server Books Online. Now, I know I need to install SP2 but how the hell I am going to install SP2 if Sql server 2005 doesn't install any of the components including Sql server Database services, Analysus services, Reporting integration services( only the workstation component is available for installation)? Any work around for this issue? P.S.: I didn't install VS.NET 2005 yet, can this solve the problem? I am running on Vista Ultimate and Installing Sql Server 2k5 enterprise edition Thanks.

Stopping SQL Server 2005 Via Local Management Studio Throws Error &&"RPC-server Is Not Available&&"
Hi everybody, I use my local installed Management Server to stop SQL Server 2005 instances. I use the context menu of the "registered Servers" window. That works fine several times. Today I suddenly got error message "RPC-server is not available. (As we run a german version the exact error message is : "Der RPC-Server ist nicht verfügbar (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA) (mscorlib)"). I checked the services of the machine hosting the SQL Server, but verything seems to be OK. I rebooted the maschine without success. I don't know what happened. But I installed a lot of Updates from MS update site. I think it has something to do with one of these updates. By the way, it is no problem to stop SQL Server via Management Studio installed on the maschine that host the SQL Server! Anyone experience the same problem ? Wolfgang

Difficulty In Installing SQL Developer On Vista Ultimate
I have a real installation mess n my hands. I'm attempting to install Sql Server Developer edition on a new Thinkpad with Vista Ultimate. There are no issues with limited resources. This copy of Vista Ultimate came with a trial copy of Office 2007 and SQLExpress was intalled with it. I unistalled SQLExpress being unaware of the Vista Compatibility problems. SQL Developer did not install after I removed SQLE. After researching this on the net, I read that developer could be installed as an upgrade if SQLE is on the system. So Installed SQLE with advanced tools deliberately not installing the tools. That installation went well. So then I tried to reinstall SQL Developer and received a message about having to setup via command line because of an exisiting instance. So I installed Developer with the folowing command line from an MSDN DVD. E:ENGLISHSQL2005DEVELOPERSQL Server x86Servers>start /wait setup.exe ADDLOC AL=SQL_Engine INSTANCENAME=MHASQLE UPGRADE=SQL_Engine SKUUPGRADE=1 /qb I chose the advanced options specifiying that the tools be installed. That installation failed to install the tools and I believe there was an error in the core data engine installation. I received an error message to check the logs but to be honest, there are meagbytes of log files and I don't really know what to check. The core log looked like this: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup beginning at Mon Oct 29 11:11:04 2007 Process ID : 4816 E:ENGLISHSQL2005DEVELOPERSQL Server x86Serverssetup.exe Version: 2005.90.1399.0 Running: LoadResourcesAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:3 Complete: LoadResourcesAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:3, returned true Running: ParseBootstrapOptionsAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:3 Loaded DLL:E:ENGLISHSQL2005DEVELOPERSQL Server x86Serversxmlrw.dll Version:2.0.3604.0 Complete: ParseBootstrapOptionsAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:4, returned true Running: ValidateWinNTAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:4 Complete: ValidateWinNTAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:4, returned true Running: ValidateMinOSAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:4 Complete: ValidateMinOSAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:4, returned true Running: PerformSCCAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:4 Complete: PerformSCCAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:4, returned true Running: ActivateLoggingAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:4 Complete: ActivateLoggingAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:4, returned true Running: DetectPatchedBootstrapAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:4 Complete: DetectPatchedBootstrapAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:4, returned true Running: LaunchPatchedBootstrapAction at: 2007/9/29 11:11:4 Error: Action "LaunchPatchedBootstrapAction" threw an exception during execution. Error information reported during run: "c:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90Setup Bootstrapsetup.exe" finished and returned: 1706 Aborting queue processing as nested installer has completed Message pump returning: 1706 I believe residual office files are throwing the installation off but that could be an erroneous conclusion as the OWC portion always fails with a 1706. What I need is basic SQL functionality and it's really important that I have the Studio Management Console. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what log to check toward getting a core data engine installed along with the olls and documentation for SQL Developer?

Failure Installing Sql Server 2005 Express On Vista Ultimate X64, Error 29506
Whenever I try to install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on my Vista Ultimate x64 platform I get error 29506. All I could find on the web was that this is probably due to an access control problem. I have tried installing it as the local administrator, as a member of domain admins, and as the domain administrator. All get the same error. My domain is a Small Business Server domain. This may be part of the problem, but I can't imagine how. When trying to force access to the domain administrator, I also seem to get an access problem. Any suggestions?

I am trying to install the SQL Server 2005 developer edition on Windows Vista, but After installation finish successfuly I open the start menu to surprise that I could not find the Shortcuts to open the SQL Server and create new database and tables etc... I opened the full path of the exe files "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsBinnVSShellCommon7IDE" but there are not any file there, even that I searched for the exe files names but they are not existed. It looks that after instalation complete that the SQL Server is not installed on Windows Vista. So, my question is: After installing the SQL Server 2005 SP2 for windows Vista, will the problem be solved? Or there is something else to do ON WINDOWS VISTA. Please, I need the answer for this problem, because I need to work on SQL Server 2005 very hard. Thanks in advance for your help...

How Can I Access SQL Server Compact Edition With SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Hello, I just installed SQL Server Compact Edition, since I am considering using it instead of SQL Server Express for a local database in my application. The documentation mentioned that I could use SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect to the Compact Edition and create and manipulate databases. To try to connect, I run Management Studio and bring up the "Connect to Server" dialog. Unfortunately, the pull-down list of "Server name"s does not include the SQL Server Compact Edition server. I do not know how to type in the server name manually, so I cannot connect. To install Compact Edition, I downloaded it and ran "SQLServerCE31-EN.msi". This installed, and I assume registered, a number of DLLs in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server Compact Editionv3.1". Is there perhaps an additional step that I left out to complete the installation? Might I need an upgrade to some other components? My Management Studio Version is: - Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.2047.00 I would appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you, WTW

Using SQL Server Management Studio Tools To Manage Dbs On SQL Server Express Edition
Hopefully a simple question: Is it possible to use Maintenance Plans created on SQL Server Management Studio (installed as part of an instance of SQL Server 2005 Standard Ed.) to back up databases running on an instance of SQL Server Express Edition with Advanced Services? I don't need directions, just whether or not it is permitted. I've been able to create the plans including establishing connections to from SSMS to the the SQL Express instance, but they keep erroring out. I just need to know if this is actually permitted since Maintenance Plans are not available on Management Studio Express Edition. Thank you in advance for your help.

SQL Server CE And SQL Server Management Studio Express Edition Yet Again
When I try to open a CE database from SSMSEE, I get the dreaded "You are trying to access an older version of a SQL Server Compact Edition database" error, with "Db version = 3505053, Requested version = 3004180." I am using what I believe to be the latest version of SSCE (3.5) and the latest version of SSMSEE (2005 SP2, Help|About reports the version as 9.00.3042.00). The database is created without error, compacted, repaired, and so forth, with no change to the error. Do I need to install or reinstall something, and if so what? Thanks.

Can I Use Sql Server 2005 Developer Edition With Windows Xp Home Edition SP2 For MCTS Exam 70-431 Preparation?
Hi I am interested in taking MCTS exam 70-431 for sql server 2005 implementation and maintainance. I have been reading the hardware requirements for the instalation of sql server versions and realise that enterprise and developer editions have same minimum requirements for the operation system. I understand that the Developer Edition includes all the functionality of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, but it is licensed for use as a development and test system, not as a production server. Also I undestand that the developer edition supports the Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 or later but the enterprise edition does not support this operating system. The evaluation/trial version is for the enterprise edition. Can I use the developer version of sql server 2005 for my practice exercises instead of using the trial version? I have all hardware requirements for the trial enterprise version except that I am using Microsoft windows Xp home edition version 2002 with SP2. I am trying to see if I can use the developer version of sql server 2005 as it is cheaper for me to buy this software than buying the new operating system for my computer. According to the microsoft book for the MCTS exam 70-431 there is a section which states that before you begin you should have Microsoft Windows Server 2003 running on your computer on an NTFS file system (NTFS) partition. Will I still be ok to use the book and be able to do all the tests in the book if i am using the developer version of sql server 2005 with my Microsoft windows Xp home edition than using the trial version which comes with the book? Thanks gifty

Change From Developer Edition To Enterprise Edition Of SQL Server 2005 64 Bit
We have an existing installation of SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition (64bit) that we are ready to go live with and would like to change the edition to Enterprise Edition (64bit). We have purchased all the appropriate licenses. We would like to avoid UN-installing the Developer Edition and RE-installing the Enterprise Edition. There must be some way to change a registry key, provide your serial number via a command line utility or re-run the setup with the license key provided and direct it to just change the edition from Developer to Enterprise and not change any of the other settings like service account, sa account, collation, etc. Any help is most appreciated.
