Slow ADO Connection Speed Vista Vs XP To SQL2005 / Server 2003

I have an application written in VB6 that creates a ADO connection using the (native SQL2005 clien)t from the client to SQLServer 2005 on Server 2003 configured as a stand alone server.  The application works great on XP and has for a number of years.

Now I am attempting to deploy in Vista and using the same code the connection speed CRAWLS.  it's in the magnitude of atleast 10 times slower.  It eventualy works but the selects and doing a readnext against the resulting record set is at a snails pace.

What am I missing.  It's has to be some sort of configuration problem somewhere.

Initial Slow Connection To SQL 2K5 On A Windows Server 2003 Machine
Hi,

I'm in the midst of trying to isolate a problem with my application:  Here's the details:

- OS: Windows Server 2003 SP1 (+All security updates)
- DBMS: SQL Server 2005
- ASP web application + COM Components.
- All are located on the same server
- Using basic authentication
-

The application uses an ISAPI filter to grab image thumbnails from the database and send them back to the browser.  If I log into the web app as a machine administrator, the thumbnails are returned quickly.  If I log into the web app as a non-admin, there is a large delay before the thumbnails are returned.  I've run the SQL profiler but it isn't showing me anything useful.
I've used all sorts of combinations for the connection string to the database, and all result in the same behaviour (Using different providers, etc.)

The funny thing is that the initial get of thumbnails takes a long time, but any subsequent runs results in the images returning immediately.   If I restart IIS then the problem comes back.

Any thoughts on why an admin account would be fast and a non-admin slow?

Best Regards,
Greg.

ps.  I hope this is in the right thread.

Possible To Speed Up The Decision Tree By Clustering The Server 2003
Dear All,

I have a dataminig programming that need to run for days. Is it possibile to speed up the training process by clustering several server by Windows 2003 clustering services? Is it actually that clustering 2 QUAD core computer is almost giving comparable performance as the sum of the speed of two (There must be some overhead, I know). I am actually familiary with the use of clustering. Is it just for making the server farm more reliable or it will collaborate and speeed up the whole training process?

If it is, is there any limit on the number of cluster is in the cluster. What version of Windows and SQL Server do I need to achieve speed up of data mining training process?

Thanks and regards

Upgraded SQL2000 To SQL2005, SQL2005 VERY Slow
I just upgraded my SQL 2000 server to SQL2005. I forked out all that money, and now it takes 4~5 seconds for a webpage to load. You can see for yourself. It's pathetic. When I ran SQL2000, i was getting instant results on any webpage. I can't find any tool to optimize the tables or databases. And when I used caused SQL Server to use 100% cpu and 500+MB of ram. I can't have this. Can anyone give me some tips as to why SQL 2005 is so slow?

Unable To Connect - SQL Express On Server 2003 From Vista
Getting error 1326.

I'm running SQL Express on Server 2003 SP1 (workstation - although, I did dcpromo promote and demote prior to installing SQL Express).

I'm trying to connect from SQL Studio Express on Vista.

TCP and Named Pipes are selected in Surface Area Config; sp_config remote, access..., 1 was run (per KB); ports 1433 & 1434 are open (I think 435 also was opened when I ran the KB instructions); Mixed mode is selected, user is set for SQL Auth, password is correct; all permissions are granted.

I found an article online which stated that mixed versions of MDAC can lead to the problem. The server has 2.82.1830 and the client has 6.0.5600.16834. Could this be the problem? If so, how to solve?

Thanks, John

Can't Connect To Local Server Instance MSSQLSERVER In SQL Server Management Studio (SQL2005 Sp2/Vista)
Can't connect to local server instance MSSQLSERVER in SQL Server Management Studio (SQL2005 sp2/Vista).

SQL Server Configuration Manager reports SQL Server2005 services: SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) Running.  This would indicate the name of the SQL server is "MSSQLSERVER" correct? I chose "default" instance during the install and that is the name it gave itself.

I tried connecting to the server using the following for the Server Name:  MSSQLSERVER and .MSSQLSERVER neither works.

The only thing that works for my installation is just plain "." (no quotes) and nothing else.  Can this be correct because I can't find any reference to this.  Thanks.

MS Access Linked Tables To SQL Server 2000 Slow On Vista
I am using two almost idential laptops, one with XP and one with Vista, the only differences is that the XP laptop has 1G of RAM and running Office XP and the Vista has 2G RAM and is running Office 2007.

I have a MS Access database that has linked tables to a SQL Server 2000 database.  The performance of the Access database on Vista is 5-10 times slower on the Vista machine.  Just flipping through records or opening forms can take 5 - 15 seconds on the Vista machine while the XP machine takes 1 sec or less.

What gives?  I looked at the CPU performance and the network performance while the Access database was busy flipping through records, the network traffic was < 2% and the CPU would spike to 40% on one of the CPUs (dual core) but would remain under 5% most of the time.

I also previously had Office XP installed on the Vista machine and it had the same performance issue so bought and install Office 2007 on the Vista machine and it did not solve the problem.

It seems that Vista is doing something that is slowing down Access with linked tables.  Is this a issue between Vista and using an ODBC connection to SQL Server?

Thanks in advance for any help on this

Slow SQL 2005 X64 Standard Edition Performance On Windows Server 2003 X64
I am having major performance issues with Microsoft SQL 2005 x64 Standard Editions performance on Windows Server 2003 x64.  The PC has two quad core cpu's with 8gb of ram and running a 500gb mirrored SCSI (Raid 1) drive system.  The database running on the server is about 11gb.  I've run a defrag several times which helps a little but I was hoping I could do something else to increase the performance.

I have also found that the bottle neck in the SSIS package is the backup and restore process of an 11gb database which takes about 1 hour (backup takes 1 hour and restore takes 1 hour) when it should take about 11 minutes.  Is there anything I can do to make these processes run faster or to find out why they are taking so long?  Any ideas would be a great help.

Thanks,

How To Resolve An Indefinite Wait State On Update Command In SQL2005 (64bit 2003 Server)?
I am in the process of moving a SQL2000 database to a SQL2005 database.

Porting from: SQL200, Windows Server 2000(SP4) (32 bit dual processor)
to:SQL2005, Windows Server 2003(SP1) (x64 bit dual processor)

After porting the database from SQL2000 to SQL2005 (no changes) running the same update statement from Management Studio on the 2003 Server and and Query analiser on the 2000 Server.

SQL2000 completes the command in 2 minutes SQL2005 is still running after 60 minutes.

SQL2000 is the live/production system with users connected, the SQL2005 is in a test environment with no other processors running.

When the problem first showed up the SQL2005 activity monitor displayed CXPACKET wait type on 2 processes with the same pid number.  I now no longer have any wait type being displayed but my wait time is increasing rapidly. No block is reported.

I assume that I have an CXPACKET lock problem.

Am I correct that I have a CXPACKET problem and if so what is the resolution?

The update statement is as follows...

update BI_LENDING_TRANSACTIONS
set [Balance Movement Month] = M.[Balance Movement Month]
from BI_LENDING_TRANSACTIONS as T,
     BI_BALANCE_MOVEMENT_DATES as M,
     BI_COMPANIES as C
where  (T.[Transaction Date] >=
(SELECT DATEADD(d, - 70, minDate) from (select min([Transaction Date]) minDate
   from p_BI_LENDING_TRANSACTIONS) t1)
  OR
 T.[Transaction Date] >= C.[MostRecentSnapShotDate] or
 T.[Value Date] = T.[Balance Movement Month] ) and
 T.[Value Date] <= C.[MostRecentSnapShotDate] and
 T.[Value Date] >= T.[Transaction Date] and
 T.[Company_Code] = M.[Company_Code] and
 T.[Value Date] > M.[SnapShotFromDate] and
 T.[Value Date] <= M.[SnapShotToDate] and
 C.[Company_Code] = M.[Company_Code]

Large Database, Slow Query Speed. Help!
Hi guys,

I am asking this question on behalf of a friend. I have little knowledge of SQL 2005 but my friend is quite knowledgeable, although this is the first time he is dealing with large database for a client. So here's the story.

His client has a database containing 1.5 million books. Now he is setting up a website which will enable users to search books. Searching by ISBN is no problem as it only takes 1 seconds. The problem is, searching by Title takes more than 20seconds, which is unacceptable. My friend has only done smaller database and he just recently thought of implementing indexing and now looking for other ideas.

Each row contains book details such as Title, Author1, Author2, Author3, Publisher, Publication Date, ISBN, etc.

Can anyone who are more experienced in doing large database share with me some design ideas? His client is aiming for 8seconds or less.

Thanks in advance!

In the server logs (W2003) and SQL logs I can't see an warning or error...

Slow Connection To SQL Server 2005
Hi!
I have a SQLServer 2005 running om a 64bit cluster. It is used to run a SharePoint 2007 portal. My problem is that the access to the database from the other servers in the farm is very slow.

I made a test program in C# that creates a standard .Net sqlConnection and runs a simple query 100 times. When run on the database server it takes less than a second, but when I run it from the web frontend server it takes 30 seconds. It never fails, it's just slow. The network connection is fast when copying files etc.

I see nothing out of the ordinary in the event log.

Do any of you have an idea what might be the problem or know how I could try to find the problem?

Thanks!

Intermittent Slow SQL2005 Database
I'm querying a small SQL2005 database and finding that the query can sometimes complete in under a second and then 5 minutes later the same query can take 15 minutes to complete.

The query I'm running is very simple as follows:
select TOP 26  * from vSearchListOpportunityItem WHERE OpIt_OpportunityId=2495 ORDER BY Prod_Name, OpIt_OpportunityItemId

The view it is pulling data from only contains only 1890 lines, which in turn pulls data from 3 tables with 821,  2560, and  1957 lines  of data. In other words it's small. I have noticed that if I try and open the smallest of these tables while on a 'go slow' period it also takes around 15 minutes to return the data.

The database was originally on SQL 2000. It is the only database on this powerful quad core server.
The SQL Server CPU usage never goes above 40%, and always has free memory.
No sign of locks.

I can't figure out why such a small database is going so slow with such a simple query. Any ideas?

Errors Creating A SQL2005 Express SP2 Database Under Vista
Hi,

I'm trying to migrate a MSDE based application into a SQL2005 Express SP2 DB Engine on Windows Vista Business but I'm facing several errors that are blocking me.
Since the installation of SQL2005 Expr. must be done in a silent mode (the end user shouldn't set anything), I'm installing it using this syntax:

SQLEXPRSP2_ITA.EXE -q /norebootchk /qb reboot=ReallySuppress addlocal=all instancename=CSERV DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 SQLBROWSERAUTOSTART=1 SQLACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM" SQLBROWSERACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM" AGTACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM" ASACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM" RSACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM"

The installation proceeds without problems but when my program tries to create the database, a message error appears:

CREATE DATABASE denied on database 'master'  (I translated directly from italian).
What I would like is to install SQL 2005 with "Windows Authentication" access instead of  "SQL Authentication".

If I install SQL2005 manually by setting a named instance (CSERV), Windows Authentication mode, activating the option "set the local account as SQL administrative account" (translated from italian and suggested with Vista) I get the following error (read from the LOG):

CREATE FILE encountered operating system error 5 (access denied) while attempting to open or create the physical file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerCSERVDataCGIDBDat.mdf'

CSERVData is the folder that the application creates and where the "mdf" and "ldf" files are stored.

So in the first case it seems that SQL2005 don't recognize the local account as administrator even if the user has administrative privileges (at least for Vista), in the second case is Vista that is blocking the action.

What is the solution??

Thank you and regards.

Access 2003 Projects Don't Work With SQL2005

Hi All,

Just installed a new version of SQL2005 on a brand new Application Server.

However, when i fired up Access 2003, it gives me some chaos about how Access isn't compatible with SQL2005. Fantastic lack of backward compatibility straight out the box.

Ok, so I do as it says and download all the updates.

Try again... Still won't allow me.

Wen't to Control Panel > Data Sources and confirmed the Native Client is in there. Added a System DSN for the new Server.

Tried Access again, still not working?? What the...

Why can't I create a new project in Access 2003, and edit it from my desktop instead of sitting on the server for every table modification? I hate designing tables on the SQL studio.

Any clues or help would be great. I'm just disappointed at the moment, on how this is holding up my database projects.

Thanks,

Chris.

Slow ODBC Connection After Updateing To SQL Server

Very Slow And Not Complete Screen Update In SQL2005
Hi

I have the following problem (on 2 PC's now)

On 1 pc i installed VS2008 besides VS2005 and SQL 2005 (before i installed VS2008 everything was fine)

On the other is a fresh installed XP machine with only VS2008 SQL2550 and Office2007
Latets service packs are installed

On both machines when i open a table in SQL 2005 with the 'open table' command the show of the table is very slow.
Every row is updated file by field, the grid is not showing, the row and column headers are not 'grey' as normal.

Scrollign is impossible as the screen updates start again that slow.

Even a small table with 10 rows and 15 field behaves this slow. Its not workable.

What can be done to resove this???

Slow Performance When Executing Sql From A Vista Machine.
SQl server 2005 version: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3054.00 (Intel X86)   Mar 23 2007 16:28:52   Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation  Developer Edition on Windows NT 6.0 (Build 6000: ) .

Our customer has a SQL Server 2005 installed on a machine running Windows Vista.

Our application is running on a XP machine and on the Vista machine and its connected to the SQL server running on  Windows Vista.
The customer table has 5498 records.

IF she runs the query "SELECT * FROM CUSTOMER WHERE dateadd(dd,0, datediff(dd,0,Lastupdated))>'20070101' ORDER BY [CustomerID]" using our application from the XP machine it takes a few seconds - 3 to 6 seconds.
If, instead, she runs the same query from the Vista machine it takes more than 5 minutes!!
This problem happens on every Vista machine.

We even installed the SQL Server 2005  on  Windows Server 2003 but every time our application is run from a Vista machine this delay occurs.

The problem doesn't seem to be SQL SERver 2005 related because when we run from the XP machine everything is ok.
Maybe there is some problem with ADO (I even tested with the SQLNCLI provider: same bad results) or Vista...

We really need to solve this problem; the number of customers complaining about this behavior on Vista is growing.

NOTE: The LastUpdated column holds date + time info so we can't ignore the time part! I know, I know, bad design...

Thanks for your help.

P.S.:
We have just received another report from a customer that is running SQL Server 2000 on a Windows Server 2003 machine and using two machines (one Vista, one XP) to connect to the database.
Same behavior. Running the sql statement from the XP machine takes 3 to 6 seconds; on the Vista machine takes more than 5 minutes...

Thanks..
J.C.

Sample code:
Dim rsData As adodb.Recordset
    Set rsData = New adodb.Recordset
    rsData.CursorLocation = adUseClient
rsData.Open "SELECT * FROM CUSTOMER WHERE ( CASE WHEN [LastUpdated] IS NULL  THEN NULL ELSE  CAST(CONVERT(char(10),[LastUpdated], 112) AS datetime)  END > CAST('20070101' AS datetime)) ORDER BY [CustomerID]", mcnMainDatabase, adOpenStatic, adLockReadOnly
    rsData.Close

Hi, I'm having a problem installing SQL2005 Developer on Windows Vista.

At the System Configuration check page, I'm getting the IIS Feature Requirement item telling me IIS is not installed or disabled.  This is not the case.

I have read article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920201 and switched on the IIS components as specified.

I've tried installing with Firewall, virus checker etc switched off.  Every time I get the same problem.  This is an issue, as I specifically need Reporting Services installed.

Has anyone managed to solve this problem ?

DB Connection From Visual Studio 2003 To Sql Server 2005
I have one computer running Visual Studio 2003, and another running SQL Server 2005.  I am trying (unsuccessfully) to add a connection to a sqlDataAdapter from an application in the Visual Studio 2003 computer to the db on the SQL 2005 machine.

If I go to the machine running sql 2005, where I am running visual Studio 2005, I can create this connection with no problems.

Is there a way fromvisual Studio 2003 to create a sqlDataAdapter with a connection to SQL 2005?

JDBC Connection Fails After Windows Server 2003 SP2
In testing new patches, I tried Windows 2003 Server SP2 and our JDBC connections stopped working.  I uninstalled SP2 and they started working again.  Anyone know where the problem is?

I have already read pages of documentation, but I will keep looking.  Please let me know if you know the setting that needs to be changed.  I'm assuming it is a new "security enhancement" but I'm just not sure exactly where.

Thanks in advance.

DB Connection Speed
This may be more appropriate on another forum, but wanted to see if anyone could give me any ideas.

We have SQL 7 on NT4. We are restricted from upgrading for a couple of particular reasons, but things nevertheless run fairly stable.

We have roughly 100 - 140 simultaneous connections.

Some users have very slow access times where others have a fast connection time. This is not restricted to DB access, but also for file transferring.

Just like you can test your DSL/Cable speeds, are there any similar tests that can be ran on client machines to find their access speeds to the SQL database server?

I really appreciate your suggestions!

SQL Server 2005 Connection Unusually Slow Even Errors.
Hello,I have a Win2K3 Server with SS2005 developers edition. I am working on aWindows XP Pro workstation which has SQL Server 2000 installed as well asthe SQL Native Client. I'm using an MS Access ADP to connect to the serverand for some reason it's extremely slow, even to the point of throwing timeout errors and "can't generate SSPI context" messages. I've hit the MSwebsite and found info on the SSPI error, but none of the items thatgenerate the error apply to my situation. I've tried using the surface areamanager to change the connection to name pipes, name pipes and tcpip etc,but no luck.Is there anything I should be looking at or any known issues that wouldaffect this kind of performance? Thanks!Rick
