Report In SQL Server 2005 - Suggestion Needed
Hi, I want to develop a monthly salary report for our employees. The salary is calculated on daily basis for individiaul employees. Thus the report is supposed to display Employee Name, ID etc + 31 columns (representing maximum days in a month). The report will display the employee basic information along with their salary calculation for each day. So its like 35 columns report. I already have used a cursor in my stored procedure with SQL Server 2005 to get this report (displayed in .NET Page) but the performance is more than worst and takes even 3-4 minutes to compile (which ofcourse is unacceptable). There are around 300 employees and they belong to different departments. When we select a given department, all the respective employees report has to be displayed. If i select All Departments, then the entire 300 employees report has to be displayed. I dont want to cache the data as it will have a big performance issue for the server. I want some good suggestion on how to develop a monthly report in SQL Server 2005 which can display the data with optimized performance. Kindly help of any guru will be highly appreciated. Regards...

SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 Has Not Upgraded Visual Studio 2005 Business Intelligence Tools
Hi, I understand from previous threads that installing SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 on the desktop client can speed up the response rate of the Visual Studio 2005 Business Intelligence Tools. However after logging on as an administrator and installing Service Pack 2, Service Pack 2 returned no errors. However after launching Visual Studio and clicking on the about dialog box the version reported was still €œRTM.050727-4200€? where I was expecting to see €œSP.050727-7600€?. I understood that I applied the same service pack to my copy of SQL Server on my laptop and the upgrade worked successfully. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance, Kieran.

Design Tools / Sql Server Mgt Tools Cause Login Fail
Login failed for user 'TOSHIBA-USERASPNET' I know that the file persmission for the web application have to include aspnet, so i keep resetting the folder permission for aspnet in file manager, but the login failed keeps coming back every day or two problem is after working with VS05 Pro, SQL Server Management Studio CTP, somehow the aspnet persmission get changed, use alot of sqldatasource wizards and often there is a conflict/hang between the datasource wizard and the need to have the mdf in a dettached state within VS server explorer, not sure but the procedure to fix this seems to be to reboot, detach and re-attach the mdf in the Sql server Studio tool, re-apply the aspnet file permission on the web app folders (wonder should i be doing this in IIS instead), make sure the mdf within server explorer is detached, the it works anyway, getting real tired of the resulting delays and design time derailment, clues greatly appreciated, thanks sometimes i can use View in Browser when in VS05 form view and i wont get the aspnet folder permission error and other times i do. last thing, is it a bad idea to give aspnet full permission for the entire web applicaiton??

SQL Server 2005 Client Tools Not Shown Up In Start Menu On Windows 2003 Server
Hello, I have installed SQL server 2005 enterprise edition on Windows 2003 virtual PC (full installation). The installation went through successfully. However, after install completed, I cannot find any of the client tools under the start menu -> all programs -> Microsoft SQL server 2005 menu. The only item listed under the SQL server 2005 is Configuration Tools, which is used to configure the database server. I have tried to install the client component again (in case I didn't install them at the first place) but the installation process cannot be started since it detected that the client components have been installed already. I can also see the sql server native client running in the services. The server engine is working fine since I can connect to that sql server using another machine where I have the client tool (SQL server management studio). One of my friends has exactly the same problem. He installed the sql server 2005 Standard edition on windows 2003 server (full installation), but the client tools are not showing up in the start menu either. I also checked the location for the SQL server management studio (Microsoft SQL server/90/Tools/Binn/VSShell/Common7/IDE), there is only one folder called publicAssemblies listed under. Is this correct or something is missing? Thanks

Bad Un-install Of SQL Server 2005 Tools Express Edition CTP
I have used the tool at this URL http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/uninstall/#Tool and *cannot* get SQL Server 2005 Tools Express Edition CTP to uninstall. I get the following dialog box: "The setup has encountered an unexpected error in datastore. The action is Write_CommitFlag. Cannot Install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition - Configuration Tools Only
I have tried several times to install SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition (most recently from MSDN Disk 3097.1) I have tried to complete an uninstall before each attempt. I do get the warning about Minimum Hardware Requirement, but can find nothing in the detail requirements to exclude my PCs configuration. I have installed: IIS and .NET Framework 2.0 I have also used ..aspnet_regiis -r to register ASP.NET I am, successfully, running Visual Studio 2005. Why does the installation process stop there and what can I do next?

Installing SQL Server 2005 Management Tools - Setup Crashing Repeatedly
I'm having many many issues installing sql server management tools. i had visual studio 2005 installed first, but uninstalled and sql related things before trying to install sql server management tools again - i also deleted the program files/microsoft sql server/ folder so there are no references. Firstly the system configuration check gives me a warning that the system doesn't meet the recommended hardware requirements - this is wrong... i've got 2.33Ghz dual core + 1gb of ram... Visual Studio 2005 Tools For SQL Server Compact Ed. Installation Problems
Hi, I've got a big problem reinstalling the just released VS2005 Tools: I've installed them, but then I've deinstalled them to first deinstall RC1 and install the just released RTM/W(?) of the runtime. But since then I was not able to reinstall the VS2005 Tools: The installer just says, that a required program for the upgradepatch is missing or another version is installed. I've also tried to reinstall SP1 of VS 2005, with the same result. BTW, I just wanna mention, that it is very complex to look through the new released Compact Edition releases. For example for the runtime it is required that the english release is installed before another localized release. But the localized releases are not called "Language Packs" (what they are) and do not verify that the english version is already installed. Also I'm interested what the recommended installation order is for installing on a developer computer eg. in German. First the VS2005 Tools or the SDK or the runtime? Thanks in advance, Klaus

A Suggestion That Can Help SQL Server Community
I have noticed that the area of writing stored procedures for muti-user databases is a very specialised field and requires knowledge that's much more than the locking topics covered in 'online books' . I am sure there are some standard tips and tricks that are used in mutil-user databases for writing to tables. Most books have a chapter or two on locking, but I think this topic should be dealt with separately in a dedicated book to locking with extensive examples on locking. Does anyone know of such a dedicated book out there?

Hi, I have created a database using VB Express 2005 express edition and I have created number of tables and SP's etc. I am trying to use the database diagram tool but I get an error stating that the database doesn't have a valid dbo. Backup Strategy - SQL2005 Tools Versus 3rd Party Tools
I am running SQL Server 2005 x64 Enterprise under Windows 2003 x64 Enterprise. My current backup strategy uses T-SQL jobs run by SQL Agent (writes out *.bak files) and then I have an Integration Services job that copies the *.bak files to our NAS device. I have performed a restore without issue. The jobs are all automated every four hours via SQL Agent. Is this a sound strategy or are there additional benefits to using 3rd party tools? If so, what are the advantages and which tool provides them?

Hi, I installed sql 2005 dev for testing sharepoint, and the management studio was not installed. Now, i am afraid to try to install it because i am thinking it may uninstall or re-install all sql components (and probably erase existing instances and sharepoint data may be lost. I have installed on an other pc the client tools, but i cannot connect to that instance, and i cannot attach the user databases (i get the 5123 error) Can anyone help me how i can install management services without messing up the sharepoint instance?

Hi there, When I try and install the client tools on my SQLServer 2005 SP2 installation I get the following message: Failed to install and configure assemblies C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90NotificationServices9.0.242Binmicrosoft.sqlserver.notificationservices.dll in the COM+ catalog. Error: -2146233087 Error message: Unknown error 0x80131501 Error description: The Transaction Manager is not available. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8004D01 I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the Client Tools, but I keep on getting the same message. Any suggestions? Regards Dawid

Install Of 2005 Management Tools Fails
I have VS2008 installed. Now, I need to install the SQL server Management Tools, because of tasks I have on SQL server instances which are installed on other servers. I guess a lot of developers are in such a situation. You develop on your own machine, but deploy the final database on a production machine.And you happen to be the manager of those databases too (well, I am) Now, it seems impossible to install the neccesary tools as I get messages; The following components that you chose to install are already installed on the machine. To view a report of available options and alternatives click on details (Workstation components, Books Online and development tools 9.2.3042.00) Then on the Details, it says the following, Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools Express Edition Reason: Your upgrade is blocked. For more information about upgrade support, see the "Version and Edition Upgrades" and "Hardware and Software Requirements" topics in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online. Build version check: Your upgrade is blocked because the existing component is a later version than the version you are trying to upgrade to. To modify an existing SQL Server component, go to Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, select the component you would like to modify, and then click Change/Remove. Now, I have no clue of what can be safely removed to allow the installation of the Management Tools. I am afraid that I will end up with a non-working SQL server Express installation which is required for VS2008 What should I do to get these Managment Tools installed on my develop machine?

Problems Installing SQL 2005 Client Tools
HI I have recently installed a copy of SQL server 2005 on to a windows 2003 server. During the install I selected to install the client tools (management studio and all that) all seemed to install ok no errors but after the install there is no management studio in the start menu. I have tried uninstalling the client tools and reinstalling them again I have also tried to launch management studio by browsing to the SqlWb.exe but the program fails to initialise any ideas? (both SQL and Windows are at SP2) Thanks Jon

Ntbackup Failing After Install SQL 2005 Tools
Hey guys I have a daily tape backup running on my file server which also has MSDE running. I have installed SQL 2005 client tools on the server and now i am getting error. Backup Status Operation: Backup Active backup destination: Appserver Tuesday Media name: "Appserver Tuesday" Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1. "MSDEWriter" has reported an error 0x800423f4. This is part of System State. The backup cannot continue. Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:800423f4 Aborting Backup. ---------------------- The operation did not successfully complete. ---------------------- I have look in the registry to remove the entry causing the problem but could not find anything related. Problem Installing SQL Mobile 2005 Tools
I'm trying to install the SQL Mobile 2005 Server tools on a Windows 2003 Server with IIS & MSSQL 2000 sp4. I've stuck .NET 2.0 on already, but the installer for the server tools Sqlce30setupen.msi just goes straight to the last page of the wizard and says the install was interrupted. I've run the install with logging turned on and this is the last portion of the trace. 2000 DTS Packages Corrupted By 2005 Client Tools?
Hi, I have many sql 2000 DTS packages that I support from my development workstation running v2000 sp4. Packages are altered on the development machine and then go through a normal release mechanisms to production via testing servers etc. I have recently installed the client tools for SQL Server 2005 on my desktop to evaluate the product. The 2005 DB instance is running on a seperate server. So, I have dev edition of sql 2000 and 2005 client tools (including BI Dev studio etc) on my workstation. I have recently had to make changes to a 2000 DTS package and used my 2000 enterprise manager to do so. No Problem- saved and tested fine on my workstation. But when I try and release it to another server, or open the package using enterprise manager from another machine that does not have sql 2005 installed - I get an error message 'Unspecified error'. This I've seen before when trying to open packages created in v2000 , using v7 or where the service packs are different between machines. Digging around my workstation and comparing some of the DLLs I know to be required to distribute DTS packages (from RDIST.txt) it seems that some of the SQL 2000 dll files have been updated by my 2005 installation. E.g DTSFFILE.DLL on my machine is 2000.85.1054.0 whilst on any 'clean' 2000 machine is at version v2000.80.760.0 Surely it cant be right that SQL 2005 has newer versions of components for SQL 2000 than is available with the latest SP for the actual product! Especially considering that the installation of 2005 does not even allow you to edit 2000 DTS packages through the management studio without a 'special' download' of the feature pack,(whihc by the way does not work very well either) So am I to conclude that you can not run side by side installations of SQL 2000 and 2005 on a single machine and expect 2000 to run as it did previously

SQL 2005 Fails To Install Workstation Components And Tools
Hello. When I install SQL Server 2005, it all goes well except that it fails to install these two: - SQLXML 4 - workstation components and tools When I try to install these two from the CD in the Setup folder of the CD 2 with the files sqlxml4.msi and sqlRun_Tools.msi (if I remember these names correctly), it gives me an error: 'Ce package d'installation n'est pas pris en charge par ce type de processeur' Sorry. My SQL CDs are in french, but it roughly translates to the message: This installation package is not taken by this processor. I thought that my hardware configuration does not meet the requirements. But I have a Pentium 4, 2Gig RAM, over 100Gig free HD space. Also I tried to install on other computers to no avail. This is a fresh install, that is, there is no previous SQL Server 2000 in it, no VS.NET 2005 or before. Nothing. I have just a fresh, new computer. Can anyone help, please? Jean
