Unable To Find / Start SQL Services Or Add Vista User Into Admin Role

Sorry if this is a simple question, I've not seen any similar posts.

I'm just finished installed SQL 2005 on Vista Business edition (first time for both).  I subsequently installed SP2 for 2005.

Upon completing the SP2 installation, the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration manager opened asking me to grant admin rights to the account I used to install the software.  The account I used is the local admin account on the machine (only account on the machine as this is my dev box) .

Nothing shows in the two boxes below on this dialog, "Available Privelages" is blank and "Privelages granted is blank".

In addition, if I go to SQL Server Configuration Manager, and click on SQL Server 2005 Services, nothing shows in the right pain. It's as if the software installed, and yet no instance of the database exists or is running.

My thought was that the admin account I used to install the software doesn't have sufficient privelages to to start the SQL Server or SQLBrowser. So I went to computer management, Local Users and groups (machine isn't on a network yet), and made sure this same account is part of the administrators group.

Any ideas on how I should solve this?

Find Out If Current User Is Member Of A Role

I need a stored procedure to find out if the current user is a member of a certain role. I want to pass the role name and return a bit to tell whether he is a member or not. I have this code to list the groups the current user is a member of but I don't know how to search or do a "SELECT FROM" on the results.DECLARE @usr varchar(32) SET @usr = USER EXEC sp_helpuser @usr But if the current user is a member of more than one role it returns multiple rows. So if I could do something like: DECLARE @grpName varchar(32) SELECT * FROM (EXEC sp_helpuser @usr) WHERE GroupName=@grpNameIF rowcount > 0 THENRETURN 1ELSERETURN 0END IF I know that doesn't work so how can I do this?

Unable To Configure Reporting Services With Vista/IIS7

I am trying to configure a reporting server on my laptop at work.  This laptop is running Vista and IIS 7.  When I install reporting services, the option for "Install the default configuration" is disabled (greyed out) during setup.  The install is successful, but then when I try to connect in the Reporting Services Configuration Manager, I get an unhandled exception ("A WMI error has occurred an no additional error information is available.").  If I continue, this error continues to crop up as I attempt to configure the Report Server.  When I attempt to configure the virtual directory, the configuration manager crashes.  Then, when I navigate to the reportserver page, I get a page that states:
Server Application Unavailable

The web application you are attempting to access on this web server is currently unavailable.  Please hit the "Refresh" button in your web browser to retry your request.

Administrator Note: An error message detailing the cause of this specific request failure can be found in the application event log of the web server. Please review this log entry to discover what caused this error to occur.

Any ideas for a solution or workaround would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Unable To Start SQL Express 2005 Service As A Network User

I am trying to start ms sql server 2005 express as a network user from originally starting as local system. I cannot start the service.

I have given this network user administrator access to sql express from the sql server surface area configuration "Add New Administrator". I have went into the local users/groups and added this network user to the 3 security groups

SQLServer2005MSSQLServerADHelperUser$SQL1
SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$SQL1$SQLEXPRESS
SQLServer2005MSSQLBrowserUser$SQL1

I receive one alert int he event logs/application

The server could not load the certificate it needs to initiate an SSL connection. It returned the following error: 0x8009030d. Check certificates to make sure they are valid.

I receive five errors in the event logs/application

I don't recall assigning any sql specific certificates. The reason I'm trying to run this as a network user is because an application on a remote windows server requires it.

After starting the service back running as local system as it was before, I went into the
SQL Server Management Studio Express and edited the properties for this new network user I wish to run the service as. I gave him full access including checking all grants in securables.

I now see a bit of a difference in the event logs with these errors.

EventID: 17058

I saw a notification when changing the sql server service's logon that the new network user has been granted the log on locally right.

The second and last new error is

EventID:  17053

UpdateUptimeRegKey: Operating system error 5(Access is denied.) encountered.

Trying Write File For RS Utility To Put The Admin Group As Having The Role To Edit Newly Made Folders

Hi there,

I am trying to write some script for the RS Uitility that will put a group called MyReportsAdmins as having the role to edit the my reports folders that are created whenever a new user is created.

I am looking for the syntax that will allow me to set the folder "My Reports" security to allow the MyReportsAdmins group to edit it.

Public Sub Main()
 Dim items() As CatalogItem
 Items = rs.ListChildren("/Users Folders", True)
For Each item As CatalogItem In items
  If item.name = "My Reports" and if item.type = 'folder' then item.set.security "

 Next Item

I don't know if this will help but this is a vague psuedo code that I was just using to organize my thoughts on how to start this.

Any and all help appreciated.

Setting Admin Rights To Report Manager, SQL Server Express 2005 On Vista Business

Hi all,

I'm a newbie to Reporting Services so please forgive my ignorance...

I've recently installed SQL Server Express 2005 with Reporting Services on my Vista Business Notebook (with no network connections) and have installed VS C# Express as well as the Business Intelligence Studio to create reports.

My C# application can connect to SQL Server fine, however, the reports I created with Business Studio refuses to deploy to the server due to the following reason:

"The permissions granted to user 'localhostJenny' are insufficient for
performing this operation".

I find this odd as I've been able to deploy reports on my other Windows XP machine (with SQL Server Express) no probs at all.  Additionally, I cannot see the 'Site settings' link within Report Manager (Web) that I'd normally get with an admin account (i.e. on my Win. XP machine).  Various sources indicate that my account has insufficient access rights to view this.

Having browsed through seemingly endless blogs and forums, I suspect that my local account has not been configured to access the Report Manager web client to publish, manage and administer the site.

I have tried the surface area tool for SQL Server, but I suspect that this is relevant only to SQL Server DB access and management.  Adding an administrator here does nothing.

The question is, how can I grant access to myself (local account) to allow me to publish reports via business studio, and at the same time - administer Report Manager Site Settings - on my vista notebook??

I would be extremely grateful for any help on this matter - I've tried ceaseless reinstallations, but to no avail!

Many thanks in advance,

Jenny

Programmatically Adding A User To The System User Role

We have been working on an application that will be using a forms-authenticated report server (RS2005) as a reporting back-end. Using the reporting services web service I have been able to assign permissions to objects in reporting services no problem. The issue is that each user needs to be added to the System User role to be able to use the report builder properly. I can't seem to find a way to do this programmatically. Any idea?

6.5 Question - Unable To Revoke SA Permission From Local Admin Group

We have a SQL Server 6.5 instance that has yet to be upgraded to SQL 2000. (Long story). Anyhow, I'm trying to revoke SA permission from the local administrators group, which SQL Server grants by default during setup. I followed the instructions on BOL, but no luck. Here is what I've tried.

Changed my desktop client from named pipes to TCP/IP
Verified the server client allows TCP/IP and named pipes (needed for old applications)
Changed security mode to Mixed
Created a local group called DBA_Admin
Granted DBA_Admin SA permission through SQL Security Manager
Revoked SA permission from Administrators group (local admin group on server)
Added my domain group to DBA_Admin

Unfortunately someone who is a member of the local administrators group, but not DBA_Admin group, is able to still access the SQL Server instance from Enterprise Manager using a trusted connection. Why???????????

Thanks, Dave

Adding A User/role To All User Database

Hi everyone,

I try to add a db_role or a user to all my databases with one script. Although parsing doesn't report any problem I get a Syntax error during execution.
I first select the database names into a #temp table which has two columns, ID and dbname.
After that I use the following code:

DECLARE @Count smallint
declare @dbVarchar(20)

SET @Count = 1

WHILE (@Count <=(SELECT MAX(ID) FROM #temp))

BEGIN

Exec ("USE @db")

EXEC sp_adduser 'test'
EXEC sp_addrolemember 'my_role', 'testrole'

SET @COUNT = @COUNT + 1
SET @db = (SELECT dbname FROM #temp WHERE ID = @Count)
END

It seems that the "Use @db" part has no value for the variable @db.
Does anybody knows how to solve this?

I don't have a user or group called 'Admin' in either NT User Manager or in SQL Server users.
Event Viewer tells me that:

Category: Logon

My I.T. Manager would like me to get rid of the event.
Any suggestions please as to where it is coming from and how I can get rid of it?

Analysis Services Admin Access To One Database Only

On a given Analysis Server the machine level OLAP Administrators group controls which users have admin access to AS Databases and Cubes on that machine. From everything I have read, if you are in the OLAP Administrators group you have full access to administer ALL the databases and cubes.
We have a need to create a OLAP database and grant a few users (a role) full admin access to create and maintain datasouces and cubes within that database but NOT allow them admin access to the other existing databases and cubes on the server.  This seems like such a common requirement. Has anyones else encountered and resolved this issue.

Reporting Services Not Showing In Central Admin

I downloaded and installed SQL Server 2005 SP2 update on my reporting services server.  I think downloaded and installed the share point reporting services admin to my share point dev server.  I open up the central administration and there is no reporting services menu option under the Application menu.  The sharepoint server is a farm with backend database on one server and all the web apps on the other (where the add-in was installed).  The reporting server is a separate server running its own instance of SQL 2005.

Am I missing something with this setup?

If it is a Fixed Server Roles, Other than sysadmin role in which role I should attach this end user. Like that other than DB_Owner in which role I should attach these end users to the Database Roles.

Can anyone guide me please.
