VERY!! Slow Package Execution When Using Management Studio

I have a parent package which executes 14 child packages in parallel, which on average take ~10 seconds each to complete when I execute the parent packege using BIDS or DTEXEC.

However, if I run the parent package using SQL Management Studio (Integration Services > Stored Packages > MSDB > Right Click > Run Package) each package takes in excess of 10 minutes to run, getting progressively slower as each package starts.

Surely the package is executing in exactly the same way as BIDS/DTEXEC, just a differenct UI?

Can anyone explain why this happens?

Thanks in advance,

Leigh

SQL Management Studio Slow To Respond
I've got a new machine at work here running Vista 64 bit....when I use SQL Management Studio to connect to a server it "Stops Responding" for a period of time and eventually comes back to life.  When I check the server registration properties and click "Test Connection" it takes 13 seconds to succeed. Anyone else have this...it's God awful slow.  Other devs on XP don't have this problem.  What gives?

Opening Table In Management Studio Is Very Slow
Dear Gurus

When I open a large table (say more than 1,000,000 Rows) in the SSMS by right clicking on the table name, it takes a very big time to fully open the table.More than 20 minutes for 1,000,000 records on a local instance.

SQL Server 2000 EM was extremely faster. Does any one knows a work around?

I need to be able to view and edit the data in SSMS.

Thanks in advance.

SQL Server Management Studio Express Very Slow
Hi,

I've recently installed SQL Server 2005 Express on my PC (winXP).

I'm finding that SQL Server Management Studio Express runs very slow. Every simple task takes 10-60seconds (open table, creating a table, saving anything etc). I can't find an answer to this anywhere. I've read neumerous articles that people wern't online therefore it was running slow because a certificate was trying to verify in the background... but I'm online and I've disabled the certificate so it can't be that.

This is a fresh install so I can't understand why it runs so slowly! When I used to use enterprise manager with SQL Server 2000 it worked at lighting speed.

What's going on?

Slow Performance With Management Studio Open
Hi everyone!

I'm currently working on my first project which is using SQL express. The performance of the queries is really quick with management studio closed. But when I have it open to test queries, my program seems to take longer to connect to the server. Is there something I haven't set up right or is this to be expected when using the express edition?

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance.

Slow Master Package Execution
We have been working with SSIS for a while and we have not found a solution or a reason for this. We have a master package that calls 10 packages in sequential order. (as shown below). If we execute each one of the package separately the run in less than 2 minutes, but when we call them through the master package the execution time start increasing as follows: Child 1 (2 min), Child 2 (3 min),, Child 3 (4 min), Child 4 (6 min), Child 1 (7 min), and so on. The execute package task has the ExecutionOutOfProcess = false (when we set it equal to True even takes longer to execute, it was creating a dtsHost.exe process for each child and always remain in memory after the package finished executing). Can someone please provide a solution or a workaround for this? Any help would be appreciated. Any help will be appreciated.

Extremely Slow Package Runtime Execution

I have a developed a project with a master package that calls 7 child packages. If I run the master package from the IDE and point the child packages to the ones on MSDB, then each one of the packages takes about 2 minutes to complete. But, when I execute the master package from MSDB, then the execution time of each one of the child packages increase more than three time the original execution. I need some workaround or solution for this. Do you know how to get a better execution time or a similar time to the one from the IDE? Any advised would be appreciated.

SSIS Package Designing And Execution In BIDS Is Very Slow
Hi,

I have created a package that has

2 SQL Execute Task, One Loop container, 2 Data Flow tasks, 1 Foreach loop container, 1 ftp task. The data flow tasks has 1 oledb source, 1 flat file source, 1 row count transformation, 1 recordset destination and 1 oledb destination.

When I load the package into BIDS it takes 125 MB of memory and then everything is slow, the properties panel slides in slowly and exists slowly. The object is the packages are not painted properly. to make changes and run takes lot of time.

Am I doing anything wrong here? Why is it consuming so much of memory?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Create Package In SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Our server currently has the following components installed for SQL Server 2005: 1.  SQL Server Management Studio Express and 2. Configuration Tools (SQL Server Configuration Manager, SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting, and SQL Server Service Area Configuration).

Is there a way to setup a package using the software currently installed (if not, what needs to be installed in order to setup a package)?

I'm looking to schedule running an executible, it was fairly easy with SQL Server 2000 (using DTS), but I'm unsure how to set this up using the software we currently have installed.

What User Is Used When Executing An SSIS Package From Management Studio?

All:

I am working with a package that executes a stored procedure.  This stored procedure makes use of a Linked Server.  When I execute it in debug mode in VS 2005, it works flawlessly.  However when I deploy it to the production server and execute it by going to Management Studio, connecting to Integration Services, navigating to MSDB, right clicking and choosing "run package" I get the infamous:

Login failed for user '(null)'. Not associated with a trusted SQL Server Connection.  OLE DB Provider SQLNCLI for linked server [name] returned message "Communication Link Failer"

error.  If I execute the stored procedure by itself on the production server, it works flawlessly.  It is only when this stored procedure gets executed via the above mentioned way inside of an SSIS pack that I get this error.  To me this suggest it is being executed as a different user, but I don't know which one.

Any help would be wonderful.

Thank you in advance...

SSIS Package Not Running From Client Management Studio
 I migrated a few stored procedures from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. When the packages are run from the box where the SSIS and SQL Server (Windows server) is installed it is running fine without any issues. When run from my local machine (client) where I have installed the SQL Server Client, the same package would not execute and gives me some weird error messages. I am a local admin on the box. Is this a issue with SSIS? Do we have to log onto the box (server) and then execute the packages?

Any help is appreciated.

Viewing DTS Package Logs In 2005 Server Management Studio
We still have some Legacy 2000 DTS packages running on our 2005 Server.   The DTS packages have been configed to save the logs on the 2005 SQL server.    We can manually look at the logs in 'msdb.dbo.sysdtspackagelog'  and 'msdb.dbo.sysdtssteplog' table  but I am looking for some  GUI tools so our tech support  can view the package logs without writting a query.

In 2000 Enterprise Manager,  you can right click on a DTS package and select 'Package Log...'  and then a nice GUI window will show up for you to browse through all the dts logs.    I just can't find this tool in 2005 Server Management Studio for Legacy DTS packages.  If I right click on a Legacy DTS package,  all the option I get are  'Open, Migrate, Export, Delete,  Rename, Refresh'...      Since the log tables are still the same, I am wondering if there is anyway I can use that 2000 DTS log viewer in 2005?

Thanks.

Package ID &&"not Available&&" In Management Studio
Do you need certain file system permissions for the SSIS service account  to view the Package ID (a guid) in management studio?

When viewing Stored SSIS Packages in Management Studio's Object Explorer, the Package ID for a given package is always listed as "Not available".  This applies to .dtsx files stored on the file system (SSIS Package store).

Conversely, for packages stored in MSDB (Sql Server), the Package ID is listed.

P.S.  The version major, version minor, and version build number are also always "0" for packages stored in the Package Store when viewed through management studio, even though they are clearly not zero when loaded in BIDS.  windows xp sp2 SSIS version 2153.

Visual Studio 2005 Standard And SQL Server Management Studio?
I am new to visual studio and I am still not sure of all its components and features.

I installed visual studio 2005 standard edition but cannot find SQL Server Management Studio?

I guess this must be because it is not included with Visual studio 2005 standard. Is it included with VS 2005 professional?

I want to add pictures of products to my shopping site using an SQL database and I’ve been told that SQL Server Management studio is required as it is a graphical tool.

How would I go about obtaining the SQL server management studio. There seems to be different versions of SQL server that it is confusing to know which one to purchase.

Will the SQL server 2005 version that comes with Visual studio standard be sufficient for me now right? I want to create a shopping site with hundreds, perhaps even thousands of products. I want to use an SQL server 2005 database. The database will include ‘dynamically generated’ product images if that is the correct terminology.

My goodness, it seems I still have so much to learn.

Sql Query Execution Using Asp.net Became Very Slow
Hi all,

I have sql query to search for fields in a rather big view. If I execute the
query in sql server enterprise manager, the results will be displayed in
less than 6 seconds. However, if I execute it using asp.net, it will take
very long (more than 2 minutes).

The query is a simple one like "SELECT * FROM myview WHERE name LIKE
'%Microsoft%'". And the code I use to execute it in asp.net is

Dim dsRtn As DataSet
Dim objConnection As OleDbConnection
Try
objConnection = GetOleDbConnection()
objConnection.Open()
Dim objDataAdapter As New OleDbDataAdapter(strSearch, objConnection)
Dim objDataSet As New DataSet()
objDataAdapter.Fill(objDataSet, strTableName)
dsRtn = objDataSet
Catch ex As Exception
dsRtn = Nothing
Finally
If objConnection.State = ConnectionState.Open Then
objConnection.Close()
End If
End Try

Where strSearch is the sql search string.

I don't have any problem using such code for other queries.

Could somebody suggest the cause of the problem and how to solve it? Thanks!

Best regards,
David

Initial CLR Execution Slow

I have a SQL Server 2005 Std. Ed. 64-bit installation.  There is one instance supporting a single production database.  I have a CLR udf.  This udf uses the XMLDocument object to retrieve XML from a URL.  When the CLR udf is executed, there seems to be an initial slow response time.  Subsequent response times are very fast.  If the CLR udf is not called for a few minutes and then called, the slowdown appears again.

Is there something happening behind the scenes with compilation or something like that which could cause this slowdown?

Any guidance is appreciated.

Slow Execution Of Stored Procedure
Hello,

I have a big problem with slow execution of stored procedure in SQL Server 2005 but I really don't understand the reason. I have a database with large table (about 400 million rows) and simple stored procedure to get data from that table (one select statement to select time and value columns).

Strange thing is that if I call that stored procedure from .net application (native SqlDataProvider) it takes about 6 seconds to execute but if I call the same procedure with the same parameters from within SQL Server Management Studio it takes only 25 milliseconds to execute!

I've noticed that from .net, procedure is called with binary data and in Management Studio sql script is executed so I've copied/pasted the script from Management Studio to .net code and again the same thing happens (6 seconds from .net and 25ms from Management Studio). I traced executions with SQL Profiler and everything seems to be identical for both applications except it takes much longer time for .net application.

Both SQL Server Management Studio and .net application are on the same machine and SQL Server is on another.

This is the query that when executed in Management Studio takes 25ms:

EXEC    [dbo].[GetRawData] @pcu = N'DV_ZERJ_HEV1',@tag = N'MJERENO',@from = N'20070629 07:00:00',@to = N'20070629 08:00:00'

This is the same query in .net application code that takes 6 seconds to execute:

sqlCommand = new SqlCommand("EXEC    [dbo].[GetRawData] @pcu = N'DV_ZERJ_HEV1',@tag = N'MJERENO',@from = N'20070629 07:00:00',@to = N'20070629 08:00:00'",sqlConnection);
sqlReader = sqlCommand.ExecuteReader();

At first I thought that Management Studio somehow caches results but if I change parameters of stored procedure it always takes less than 30ms to execute.
I really don't understand this. Please, help!

Slow Query Execution, SQL Server 2000
Hi All,I have a table that currently contains approx. 8 million records.I'm running a SELECT query against this table that in somecircumstances is either very quick (ie results returned in QueryAnalyzer almost instantaneously), or very slow (ie 30 to 40 seconds toreturn results), and I'm trying to work out how I improve performance.Essentially the query I'm running is nothing more complex than:SELECT TOP 1 * FROM Table1 WHERE tier=n ORDER BY member_id[tier] is a smallint column with a non-clustered, non-unique index onit. [member_id] is a numeric column with a clustered, unique index onit.When I supply a [tier] value of 1, it returns results instantaneously.I have no idea if this is meaningful, but the tier = 1 records wereloaded first into the table, and comprise approximately 5 millionrecords.When I supply a [tier] value of 2, the results take 30 to 40 seconds.tier =2 records were loaded second, and comprise approximately 3million records.I've tried running an execution plan, and while I'm no expert, itappears to me that the index on tier isn't being used, even if I use:tier = CAST(2 as SMALLINT)I'm wondering if anyone can give me ANY advice on how to get anybetter performance out of this SELECT statement?Also, out of curiosity, can a disk defragment have a positive impacton SELECT query performance?Any help very much appreciated!Much warmth,Murray

Dynamic SQL And Execution Plan And Very Slow. A Few Questions
Hey. I've a problem and I think I know the answer also but still want to confirm. We are using SQL 2000 and SSRS 2000. The problem is, we have custom reports which a customer can build and run. I wonder how one can write sp's for that. The way it's written right now is a dynamic select clause then a dynamic, from, a dynamic where, dynamic groupby all appended torgether and run by execute command. I know it'd dynamic SQL and execution plans and stuff will hurt me but someof these reports take forever. Is there anything that can be done to fasten these reports? And if the select will be dynamic and the where will be dynamic, does it make sense to even use a sp? Is it ever going to use the same execution plan? When I run DBCC memorystatus, procedure cache takes up most of this memory. Does the use of dynamic SQL explain that?

Thank you for your time and effort in replying.

Slow Execution Of Queries Inside Transaction

I have some VB.NET code that starts a transaction and after that executes one by one a lot of queries. Somehow, when I take out the transaction part, my queries are getting executed in around 10 min. With the transaction in place it takes me more than 30 min on one query and then I get timeout.
I have checked sp_lock myprocessid and I've noticed there are a lot of exclusive locks on different objects. Using sp_who I could not see any deadlocks.
I even tried to set the isolation level to Read UNCOMMITED and still have the same problem.
As I said, once I execute my queries without being in a transaction everything works great.
Can you help me to find out the problem?

To determine the status of execution of child package I am using two differnt constraint ..one constraint is having value "Success" and other having value "Failure".

My problem is that when child packge is executed successfully the constraint with value = "Success" works properly but when child fails the constraint with value "Failure" does not work.

Store Procedure Does Not Return All Rows Sometimes, Slow Execution...!!!
Dear friends,I have a problem with a simple select statement and I don't know why it is happening.I have 2 tables, Fees and FeesDataRoles. Very strange.....!!!!I ran the procedure 5 times after inserting an item and nearly 1 out of 5 does not return the right result righ. ( It does not include the recently inserted rows)Anyone have any idea....?I used Tuning Advisor, no sugestion. I change the clustered index in FeesDataRoles from FeesDataRoleID(the primary key of the table) to DataRoleID to increase the performance, still it happens sometimes.Is my Where clause so costly that cause this problem.Please help. Server Express, Management Studio Express, Visual Studio Standard, And An ASP.NET Page....
I believe I'm missing something as far as my configuration goes...I'm new to working with SQL server and the databinding I'm trying to do.

I have an ASP.NET page that has a radio button list box which I have databound to a database served up by SQL Express

I'm having a lot of problems with connections...

I was going to enumerate the behavior under each configuration (local only, remote tcp/ip only, remote pipes only, remote both), but I've realized that it is just flaky.  Sometimes I can connect to the db with SQL Studio express, sometimes not.  Sometimes I can add new tables and edit tables, sometimes not.  Sometimes I can create a new connection when trying to databind from within Visual Studio, and sometimes not (sometimes I can't even connect, other times, I can connect initially but when I build a query through the designer it then has problems).  Lastly, sometimes the ASP.NET page works correctly and sometimes not.

This all seems to be mostly independent of how I configure SQL Server as far as what kinds of connections are allowed.  I thought there was a pattern, but as I tested it more rigorously I found there wasn't.

What I would like to do is be connected to the same DB with Visual Studio and SQL Studio, edit the DB as I wish, databind to it, and test my ASP.NET page, all without needing to jump through a bunch of hoops (although right now I wouldn't even know what those hoops are...it's just a shot in the dark as to what will work).

It's all quite maddening and any help would be appreciated.

SQL Mgt Studio Becomes Very Slow After A Few Hours
Hi everyone,

I'm connecting to my LOCAL MSSQL 2005 database using Management Studio. I find that after a few hours of use, Management Studio's connection to the database becomes extremely slow. For example, if I right click on a table and choose Open Table, it will take at least 30 secs to open the table. Then if I make changes to a record and move the cursor to the next row, it will take another 30 secs to update the record.

I don't think it's anything to do with indexes, cos my table is very small (less than 20 records).

I'm not running any batch jobs on my local database. In fact, my SQL Agent is turned off.

I notice this does not happen when I connect to my REMOTE database, which is hosted on a commercial web host.

What could be wrong here? Has anyone experienced this before?

Thanks for the help.

Execution Of SProc In Bus Dev Studio
Hi,

Anyone happen to know why I could be able to execute an sProc, which exists in multiple databases, and I get results against 1 DB and none in the other ?

Background:

I developed a report using one database, and then switched the settings of my Data Source over to another DB I need to use & test on as well. The first DB I used will bring me back expected results, the 2nd returns nothing (empty result set).

Is there some embedded data source reference that is messing me up here ?

I have tried closing out and re-opening the SOlution to ensure it refreshed data connection. I have tried deleteing and recreating the data set using the 2nd database as well.

Additional Info:
Same sProc loaded to both DBs
Same valid SQL credentials supplied to both DBs
Same valid parameter values supplied for each sProc execution
Execution in SQL Studio returns results in both DBs using above credentials and matchin parameter value.

Thanks,
Sojo

SQL Studio Manager Runs Slow
Good Morning

  I runing SQL 2005 and PC that has 1.2 Gb of memory and 20 Gb of free space and the current memory being use while SQL 2005 and all my other programs are running is 880mb. I've notice that SQL studio manager runs very slow when I create a New query or if I try to open a table from the database. The table only has 200 column so I doubt it could be because of my table. Is their anything I could do to make run faster?

SQL CE 3.5 Visual Studio 2008 TOO SLOW

Hi,

I have a desktop application that uses an Access DB.
Now i have converted it to Visual Studio 2008 and tried the SQL CE Edition.
I wrote all the methods, create the database and the tables on the fly and seems to work really fine.
The database is 20MB big, but the performance is vey bad.
I mean with Access it's very fast, you actually don't see how slow it is, and with the SQL CE now,
it takes 7 seconds !!!! for a few access instead of under 1 second with Access.

I can't imagine that this is normal, there must be something i am really missing in my code.
Looks something like this:

Code Snippet
SqlCeEngine engine = new SqlCeEngine("Data Source = URANO.sdf");
engine.CreateDatabase();
engine.Dispose();
// Verbindung öffnen
sqlConnection = new SqlCeConnection("Data Source = URANO.sdf");
sqlConnection.Open();
// creating the tables here with data
sqlCommand = new SqlCeCommand("SELECT ID FROM Laender WHERE Name=@Name", sqlConnection);
sqlCommand.Parameters.Add("@Name", SqlDbType.NVarChar, 30);
sqlCommand.Parameters[0].Value = land;
sqlDataAdapter = new SqlCeDataAdapter(sqlCommand);
sqlDataSet = new DataSet();
sqlDataAdapter.Fill(sqlDataSet, "Laender");
landID = "" + (((int)sqlDataSet.Tables["Laender"].Rows[0][0]) + 1);

this takes 1 - 2 seconds

btw: the whole class is static and the variables also are static.

Would it be better to load all the database tables into datasets, and only work with the datasets in memory ?
Well i thought that the SQL CE Engine, would load the database into memory and be just fast.
I mean we have 2 GB of memory or 1 the most of us, 20MB isn't that much.

Thanks !

Nick

Deploying Assemblies Using Visual Studio Is Slow...
Hello,

I am using CLR integration to provide all the stored procedures for my project, but the issue I am finding is that deployment of my assembly and it's stored procedures (and two UDTs) is now starting to take so long that I am getting a timeout from SQL Server during deployment (with the default settings of 600 seconds remote connection timeout).

Is there a way to speed-up the deployment process?

I know I could employ a differing strategy of splitting the procedures into multiple assemblies, but I am more concerned that the legth of time used to deploy might indicate some other issues with my server.

By the way, my current assemly contains: 247 Stored Procedures, 7 User Defined Functions, and 2 User Defined Types.

Thanks,

Visual Studio Interface EXTREMELY Slow

Hi folks,

I'm working within VS2005/Business Intel studio environment.  I've got one master package, which loads about 18 sub-packages as tasks.

After openin the master package (and waiting 5-10 minutes for the packages to open and validate), maneuvering within the IDE is nearly impossible, it is so slow.  Context menus can take 30 seconds to open.  Certian operations, like closing a window, seem to hang the environment.

Does anyone have any feedback about this kind of ide performance problem?

Thanks, Scott
