View Data From A Compact Database With The Management Studio Express ?
Hi there, after some hours of installing and experiments i can now open and sql server compact database (sdf) iam also able to create a new database and add tables and columns. (everything with the ms sql server management studio express)
i can also open the northwind database. but iam not able to view the data .
if i rightclick on a normal database table i can choose ->open table and see its content.
but on a compact table i have at rightclick only
edit table
properties
delete
refresh
how can i see the data in the table or add new content ?

Built Database With SQL Server Management Studio Express, How Can I Quikly Add Test Data?
I've built my SQL Server Express database with SQL Serevr Management Studio Express, and now I want to enter some seed data to assist in building tha app around it. I cannot find an option to manage the data in SQL SMSX, like I used to with Enterprise Manager. I don't want to have to write an app just to get test data in. Seems like this should be a common need. Am I missing something obvious here? Can't find any reference to this in a search of the forums. Please help.

How Can I Access SQL Server Compact Edition With SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Hello, I just installed SQL Server Compact Edition, since I am considering using it instead of SQL Server Express for a local database in my application. The documentation mentioned that I could use SQL Server Management Studio Express to connect to the Compact Edition and create and manipulate databases. To try to connect, I run Management Studio and bring up the "Connect to Server" dialog. Unfortunately, the pull-down list of "Server name"s does not include the SQL Server Compact Edition server. I do not know how to type in the server name manually, so I cannot connect. To install Compact Edition, I downloaded it and ran "SQLServerCE31-EN.msi". This installed, and I assume registered, a number of DLLs in "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server Compact Editionv3.1". Is there perhaps an additional step that I left out to complete the installation? Might I need an upgrade to some other components? SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 Can't See SQL Server Compact
Hi, I am very new to SQL Compact. I am trying to create one database which can work on the desktop application and also on a pda application. I want to create the database but I am unable to start without Management Studio. Can you guide me to the right tools so that I can create database, view it and manage it use something like Management Studio Express. Also one more question is if my database needs to be at both places on the desktop and on pda how can i synchronise them. PDA will take using c# application data from RFID scans and then i need to sync that database on the desktop so that reports and other info can be generated from the desktop c# application. Visual Studio Database File And SQL Server Management Studio Express Question
I have a database in my "App_Data" folder of my visual studio project. I can view it fine in Visual Studio's built-in tools for managing a database attached to a solution. However i recently started playing around with the SQL Server Management Studio Express program. When i attach my database to Management Studio, and try to run my program it crashes. I think it might be a permissions error?!? When i detatch it and reattach it in visual studio it runs fine again. Any suggestions? ThanksJason

SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???
When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data. Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing). When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server. Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine? Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic? The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Hi, I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum. Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it. I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list. Why Can't I See My Web Developer Express Database From SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Hi, I'm completely new to SQL Server and ASP.NET, so please bear with me on my learning curve! I've installed Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express (on the same PC). I then used Web Developer Express to successfully create a new database with a couple of tables in it. So far so good. I then installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the same PC and tried to connect to my new database. The connection to the SQL Server instance appears to work OK (using Windows Authentication) but I can't see the database I previously created. All I can see are the System Databases. Does anyone know what the solution might be?

AdventureWorks Database Not Seen By Management Studio Express CTP
When I install AdventureWorks.db for SQL Express, it runs without errors. The database files (data and logs) are in the SQL Express 2005 data directory. However, I can not see the database in Managment Studio Express CTP. I've tried repairing and uninstall/install again. Does not help. I have SQL Express 2005 cleanly installed. I have the pubs and Northwinds databases cleanly installed. (I was able to execute the queries that came for installing these). I can see both pubs and Northwinds in Management Studio Express CTP. Any suggestions?

Hi, I have Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express and do not see how I can enable the Import Data... feature which I have seen on the regular Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio version. Basically, if I right-click on a database, I'd like to use the Import Data... function which should be found in this menu under the Tasks... item. The Import Data... menu choice is visible just below the Generate Scripts... choice in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio but not in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express. Can anybody tell me if this feature is available in the express version. If not what are my options in order of least cost. Is it possible to use SQL Server Compact Edition v3.5 with SQL Server Management Studio? When I attempt to connect to a 3.5 database I get the following error: "You are trying to access an older version of a SQL Server Compact Edition Database..." I am using v3.5 beta 2. HiI am using SQL Server Management Studio Express to make my databases but I noticed if I make my database in Visual studios and go new Item and make a new database I see it in app_data folder and server express tab and if I make it in SQL Server Management Studio Express I only see it in the server explorer. So if I have to move my files to another computer how do I move my database easly with SQL Server Management Studio Express? Since when you make it with the visual studio the file gets stored with all the other files of your project so if you move it all to another computer you prob won't run into a problem. So how do I make it that so I can do everything in SQL Server Management Studio Express(since I like working in it) then export it into a file that I can then go into my app_data folder and add it is an exist item? How do I set up a database snapshot and backup the database for Windows Server Update Services 3.0, that uses the "desktop" version of SQL server on the same server running Widows Server 2003? There does not seem to be a "Management Plans" sub-folder under the "management" folder in the Management Studio Express console- so that's probably my first request- how do I establish a "Management Plans" subfolder, then how do I (step-by-step) set up a backup of the SUSDB?

Management Studio Express Breaks Database Connectivity
Hi, I'm using SQL Express to run DotNetNuke on my own Windows 2003 server. DotNetNuke(DNN) copies a database on to the server from it's installation files and during the installtion process it fills the database with starter data. That process works fine. But the minute I attach to the database in SQL Server Management Studio Express (MSE), my web app loses connectivity to the database. When browsing to the default.aspx, I see the following message: Error Installing DotNetNuke Current Assembly Version: 04.03.05 ERROR: Could not connect to database specified in connectionString for SqlDataProvider __________________________________________________________________ (don't be fooled by the error message, Dot Net Nuke was fully installed and working before I attached to it with Management Studio Express) Does anyone know the trick to getting the asp.net app talking to the database again? I'm using Windows Authentication. I have verified that Management Studio Express is what is messing up my connection. Any help is appreciated. I have already become aware that I must disconnect from the database (in Management Studio Express) for the web app to connect properly. I have already tried that. Same error. So far for me, it seems that simply attaching to the database with Management Studio Express breaks my database connectivity.

Can't Attach Database Using SQL Server Management Studio Express
I am having a problem Attaching, well actually not being able to see a database when attempting to attach it. I suspect this is more of a security issue rather than a problem with Management Studio, but I can't figure out what is happening. If I copy a database to Documents and SettingsAll Users... and attempt to attach I can see the file in the selection tree. This also is the case if I copy it to Documents and SettingsDefault User... But if I copy it to Documents and SettingsADynarski... which is the account I normally log into, when I expand the folder in the selection tree, nothing is visible. And the same thing occurs if I copy the file to Documents and SettingsGuest... I've looked at the security settings and everything appears to be normal. This is on a box with XP Home and SQL Server Express. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? Thanks, Al

I am still a bit of a noob with SQL, but, when I use Enterprise Manager with my SQL 2000 server at the office, it is pretty simple to import data from pretty much any data source. I have not been able to locate the Transform facility in the 2005 express software that I downloaded onto my home pc (to help me learn SQL). Hi all, Long time ago, I downloaded the Northwind and pubs databases from the Microsoft website (I do not remember the details of it) and installed these two databases together into the SQL Server Management Studio Express of my PC (Microsoft Windows XP Pro). I tried to learn an example of using "User Instance" (source code was from a book) on the Northwind database located in my SQL Server Management Studio Express. I just find out that my Northwind database has the title only and no tables at all. Server Express, Management Studio Express, Visual Studio Standard, And An ASP.NET Page....
I believe I'm missing something as far as my configuration goes...I'm new to working with SQL server and the databinding I'm trying to do. I have an ASP.NET page that has a radio button list box which I have databound to a database served up by SQL Express I'm having a lot of problems with connections... I was going to enumerate the behavior under each configuration (local only, remote tcp/ip only, remote pipes only, remote both), but I've realized that it is just flaky. Sometimes I can connect to the db with SQL Studio express, sometimes not. Sometimes I can add new tables and edit tables, sometimes not. Sometimes I can create a new connection when trying to databind from within Visual Studio, and sometimes not (sometimes I can't even connect, other times, I can connect initially but when I build a query through the designer it then has problems). Lastly, sometimes the ASP.NET page works correctly and sometimes not. This all seems to be mostly independent of how I configure SQL Server as far as what kinds of connections are allowed. I thought there was a pattern, but as I tested it more rigorously I found there wasn't. What I would like to do is be connected to the same DB with Visual Studio and SQL Studio, edit the DB as I wish, databind to it, and test my ASP.NET page, all without needing to jump through a bunch of hoops (although right now I wouldn't even know what those hoops are...it's just a shot in the dark as to what will work). It's all quite maddening and any help would be appreciated.

SQL Database User Account Access Remotely Via SQL Management Studio Express
Hi, I hope you can help.I have configured a Windows 2003 web server and SQL 2005 Server (on same box) to successfully allow remote connections and to allow access via SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005.The problem I have is that I want to restrict access to the databases on the server via the Management Studio to specific databases e.g. 1 database user "sees" only 1 database.I can configure it so that the user's remote access permissions do not allow access to other databases but they can still "see" the database listed in the Management Studio explorer.I can also configure it so that the users cannot see all the databases (by disabling View All Databases on SQL Server), but this means that they cannot not see their own database which they have permissions for.Is it impossible to have the desired behaviour of only displaying the database which the remote user accessing has permissions for and hiding all other databases?I have MSN'd,Googled and Yahoo'd this one to no avail :(Many thanksFergus

How Can I Re-install The Northwind Database In SQL Server Management Studio Express?Use SqlDataSet && The .Fill Method Properly?
Hi all, In my VB 2005 Express, I created a Windowds Form application "shcDataSet" that used 1 SqlConnection, 1 SqlDataSet and 3 SqlDataAdapters associated with the Northwind Database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express. The SqlConnection had "User Instance" in the following ConnectionString: Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataorthwnd.mdf";Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True. The 3 SqlDataAdapters were for the Northwind files "Customers", "Orders" and "Order Details" used in the SQLDataSet "AllOrders" with a AllOrders.xsd file. I ran the "shcDataSet" applicatyion and it worked fine. After the execution of "shcDataSet", I checked the Northwind database in my SQL Server Management Studio Express and clicked on "+" in front of Northwind database-I did not see any file showed up and I got the following error message: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.SmoEnum) Additional information: one or more files do not match the primary file of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupted and should be restored from a backup. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:5173). If I executed the "shcDataSet" application again, I got a new error: SqlException was unhandled - Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'myPC##myName' ------->daCustomers.Fill(AllOrders11, "Customers"). I have 3 questions to ask: (1) How can I re-install the Northwind database in SQL Server Management Studio Express? (2) When I use the .Fill Method, do I have to tell the SQL Server Management Studio Express to load and/or unload the Northwind files "Customers", "Orders" and "Order Details"? Cannot Log Into SQL Server Database In Visual C# Express After Using SQL Server Management Studio Express
Is anyone else having the same annoying problem as me? ... I have a SQL Server Express edition database using Windows login authentication. Normally I can access it fine in C# Express, but If I have used SQL Server management Studio express in the same windows login session, i get: Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'mydomainmyuserid' If I restart my PC, I can then access the database in Visual C# express. I'm running Windows XP. Thanks!

Hi all, I just realized recently that a database "XYZ" in the Object Explorer of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) is put in the Database Explorer of my VB 2005 Express for processing a Stored Procedure in executing the SELECT statements (not by using Input and/or Output Parameters) during the ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 Express programming, then the content of the database "XYZ" is not in the SSMSE. How can I return the database "XYZ" from the DataBase Explorer of VB 2005 Express back to the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) safely? Please help and advise. SQL Server Management Express Studio Management Tools
I have recently installed the SQL Server Management Studio Express but I do not find Management Tools in order to create scheduled backups and shrinking of the databases. I was under the impression that this should be included in the Management Studio. I use the SQL 2005 Express for smaller customers who run the SQL on a desktop unit. I need a way to backup the data to a server machine for backup purposes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail.

SS Compact Edition 3.1 And Visual Studio Express.
Hello, I have a SQL Server CE 3.1 database, which I want to connect to. Browsing through the documentation, It's not clear to me which tools to use for this. I have installed VS 2005 express edition (with sp1), but it can't connect to .sdf and version VS 2008 only connects to SS CE 3.5. The tools installation file ssce31vstools-ENU.exe file doesn't install on express edition it seems, as I get an error message, that the patch is not valide. I also installed the SS Management studio, but it doesn't seem to be able to handle .sdf. Am I missing something obvious here? I am simply trying to access and modify a SS CE 3.1 databse... Hi all, One year ago, I did "Ruuning Setup to Install AdventureWorks Sample Databases and Sample" to install "AdventureWorks" in my SQL Server Management Studio Express. Now, It just have the name "AdventureWorks" on and no contents (no tables, schemas, etc.) in it. In my Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, AdventureWorksDB (162.00 MB) is still there and AdventureWorks (Windows Installer Package [27,992 KB]) is in my C:/drive. (1) Should I delete the name "AdventureWorks" in my SQL Server Management Studio Express, and remove AdventureWorksDB (162.00 MB) from the Add or Remove Program, before I re-install AdventureWorks, AdventureWorksDW, and Adventure Works DW sample databases and samples from Windows Installer Package [27,992 KB]? Is my old AdventureWorks (Windows Installer Package [27,992 KB]) still good and complete for installation? (2) SQL Server 2005 Books Online (September 2007) presents "Reinstalling Sample Databases from Script". But (i) I can not find the file instawdb.sql for reinstalling AdventureWorks from script and I do not have AdventureWorks OLTP in my C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsSamples folder, (ii) I can not find the file instawdwdb.sql for reinstalling AdventureWorksDW from script and I do not have AdventureWorks Data Warehouse in my C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsSamples folder either!!??
