Can't Connect The Database Engine
I just installed SQL server Enterprise 2005 and connected database engine in SQL server management studio, but it is blank space when choose 'browse for more' at server name field. What's reason to cause this problem?
Questions for this problem:
1. Do I need to open the TCP port 1433 in firewall by hand for connect database engine?
2. I can€™t find the sqlbrowser.exe in SQL server/90/ folder, can I copy this file into it.
3. The SQL server mobile is work; I can connect the new created database. What€™s different to use SQL server mobile and database engine?
4. I got five discs from Microsoft; I have installed DVD server application and pack 2. Do I need to install the library?
Thanks for any help.

Cannot Connect To Database Engine
Hi, I've just installed a brand new instance of SQL on a new server. It's for our Helpdesk/Inventory software. All I needed to install was the DB Components and the Tools (primarily for Management Studio). I did not install SQL as a default instance, but called it TRACKIT8 (software using this instance). I have subsequently installs SP2 before trying to connect to the DB. I am unable to conect to the DB Engine via Management Studio. In the Server name: field, there is a blank space, so I try to browse for a server, but I get nothing. I try to manually type the name of the server (NIASSQL2, localhost etc) into the field, but I cannot connect to the engine at all. I can see the services for the Server and Server Agent have started in the SQL Server Configuration Manager and I am able to change certain field in the properties of the Server and Agent (change the path of the error logs). Is there something I am supposed to configure before I try to connect via the Management Studio? I am looking to change the paths of the Data Files, as I don't want them on my C: partition. Plus I have other instances I want to create and install. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Cannot Connect To Database Engine
Hi! I have a little problem and I need your help. I have recently installed SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition. I did not install all the features, just the Database engine and Analysis Services. I also updated everything with SQL Server SP2. So far, so good. But when I tried to connect to the Database Engine, I get a little window with the following message: "Cannot connect to Valentin-PC (server name)." "Login failed for user - User Name - ( Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456 )". I have tried just about everything, but to no avail. What is strange is the fact that I can connect to the other server type that I have installed (Analysis Services). No connection problems there. Can anyone help? Mucho gracias!

How To Stop The Connect To Database Engine Dialog
I am working (or trying to work) in Management Studio. I have one database that I use on my one and only machine. ( I am not using any of the default databases.) I have several queries saved as files, which I open as needed. Every time I open a file I get that VERY ANOYING Connect to Database Engine dialog box. OK, it's no big thing. I don't use Server Authentication so all I have to do is hit enter and I get connected. But why should I even have to hit enter once after I'm already connected? How can I MAKE IT STOP? Thanks, Gregory

No More Able To Connect To My SQL Server 2005 Database Engine
Hello, I have installed SQL Server 2005 in my PC and during the installation I have created a predefined instance (I have used Windows autentication). I could use correctly SQL Server till some days ago, when I changed the password of my PC login profile. Now, when I open SQL Server, if I click on the "Connect" button, the following error message appears (I translate it from italian version) Unable to connect to "CARLO" Further information: An error has occurred while you were trying to establish a connection to the server. When you connect to SQL Server 2005, this error can be generated because SQL Server doesn't allow remote connections under the predefined settings. (provider: Provider Named Pipes, error: 40 - Unable to open a connection to SQL Server) (Micorsoft SQL Server, error:2) I'm sure that the error raises because I have changed my PC access password (the program worked correctly before), but in the "Connect to Server" window the user name and the password text boxes are disabled, so I can't insert the new password... Can you suggest what have I to do? Thank you very much

HELP!! Cannot Connect To SQL Server 2005 Developer Database Engine
OK. I'm using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition and I installed it under "Local System" on Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate. I understand that there are issues of course that occur with this, however I can't seem to understand why what I'm doing isn't working. I'm not using this on any server, just to test out ASP.NET 2.0 applications - nothing more. I'm getting this error: TITLE: Connect to Server ------------------------------ Cannot connect to RUSSPC. ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 2) For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=2&LinkId=20476 ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ I've installed this via a mixed authentication (as suggested by www.wrox.com). I tried enabling the TCP/IP and named pipe connections, just as previous people have done, but it hasn't worked. Nor has enabling the SQL Browser. I'm really at a loss on what to do.

Remeber Password On Connect To Database Engine Dialog
Is there any description on what the Remember Password check box on this dialog box does? As far as I can tell, it doesn't do anything. Every time I open an item from a project, or create a new Query, I get asked for the password, no matter how many times I have given it for the Server before. It looks so useful, but is frustrating not knowing how to use it. Thanks, -Rob

The error is : An error has occurred during report processing. Cannot create a connection to data source '<data source name>'. The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot open the file '<UNC location of the MS-Access database>'. It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data. The Best Way To Use The Database Engine Tuning Advisor
Hello all,I want to use the SQL Server 2005 Tuning Advisor on our database, andI'm hoping someone here can just confirm the steps for me. We have a10GB database that has a number of applications hitting it constantly, all performing many SELECTs, INSERTs and UPDATEs. Are the followingthe steps I need to take?1. Stop all the applications hitting the database.2. Make a backup of the database.3. Start the profiler on the original database.4. Turn on all the applications again.5. Wait for a time before turning off the profiler and saving theprofile.6. Run the tuning wizard against the backup database using the savedprofile.Do I have to do this every time or am I missing something obvious? I'munder the impression I need the backup because our database has a highvolume of INSERTs and UPDATEs so I have to make sure the state of thedatabase matches the state of the profile. As a matter of interest, why is it not possible for the tuning wizardto analyse the database using the *current* activity? Why does it haveto be a 'pre-recorded' workload? Many thanks,Tommy.

Where's My Default Sql Server Database Engine?
I am a novice in DB learning. A few months ago, I installed the ms sql server 2005, and use it to learn the book SQL Server 2005 for dummies. It worked just fine. But after i finished the book, i uninstalled the program and deleted the express database engine. Perhaps it was an incomplete installation, yesterday when i tried to reinstall the sql server 2005, i found some configuration tools still in the directory. So i used windows to remove those tools. After that, i reinstall the sql server 2005, and changed some values in the register. The reinstallation goes well. But after it was done. I started the management studio, there's no default database engine for me to connect! All I could find in Internet is how to connect to a database engine without information about how to create one. Can anyone tell me why and help me out? i am a novice.

Error Connecting To Database Engine
I have been successfully using SQL Server 2005 developer edition for a couple of months now. However, when I started Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio this morning I could not connect to the €œDatabase Engine€? (I€™m using Windows Authentication). I can still connect with the €œIntegration Services€? and €œAnalysis Services€? on the same server. The server running on my local machine, so there shouldn€™t be any problems with the network. I am also able to connect with it through ODBC, it just seems to be the Server Management Studio which can€™t connect, and it only has problems with the €œDatabase Engine.€? Any help would be appreciated.David The detailed error message says: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. Database Engine Tuning Recommendations
Hi, I'm just testing the database engine tuning advisor. I created a basic trace file in SQL Server profiler by randomly opening a number of views in the Adventureworks db. I then used the Database Engine Tuning advisor to analyse this. The tuning advisors recommendation was to drop about 2-3 dozen indexes, which sounds like a really dumb idea. Is it normal for DET to recommend that any index not referenced by the workload file be dropped?

Seek Help To Understand The Jet Database Engine
Hi, I am reading the book by Steven Roman: "Access Database : Design and Programming" 3rd edition. On page 120, Figure 7-2, he showed the the structure of the Jet Database Engine, which is very confusing to me. According to this picture, I come to such an understanding: 1) VBA is just the hosting language for the Jet Database Engine; 2) Microsoft Visual Basic, Excel, Access, Word are hosting languages for VBA. Isn't this weird? VB hosts VBA? Thanks for any input!

Database Engine Tuning Advisor
Hi experts! I would like to ask for some help regarding Database Engine Tuning Advisor. I was trying to create Session Monitor then I choose TABLE as a workload. Then after creating and selecting the corresponding setup then I start the analysis, during the analysis it prompted an error? Error MSG: The specified workload(file or table) has no tunable events. Events must be one of the following types - SQL:BatchStarting, SQL:BatchCompleted, RPC:Starting, RPC:Completed, SP:StmtStarting or SP:StmtCompleted for workload trace file or table. But if I tried to use the Workload FILE instead of the table the session is successful and completed the analysis. My SQL current setup is client only, I was just accessing the server. Pls help me how to fix or do I need to configure something? Badly needed your help experts. Thanks in advance. Tatas move

Database Engine Tuning Advisor
Hi, If I run a tuning trace through the Database Engine Tuning Advisor that contains INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE statements. In the past I've not been too concerned about duplicate data as the tuning would be done on test data but in this case the databases are more mission critical. How does the Database Engine Tuning Advisor use the trace file? Does it run all the scripts against the database -and so inserting data etc? Or does it merely simulate the script? TIA Tim ---------------------------- I've finally started blogging (all be it badly!) Check it out: http://blogs.thesitedoctor.co.uk/tim/

Connect To RDB Database-CONNECT TO ORACLE RDB HYC00 (Driver Not Capable)
i am using reporting services to prepare reports. My database though is not SQL is RDB. I using ODBC to connect to RDB with "Oracle ODBC for RDB" Driver version 2.10.17.00. This is my data source. When i use this datasource to create a report when designing a query i get an error "CONNECT TO ORACLE RDB HYC00 (Driver not capable)" and i cannot see the tables graphically set the relations and prepare the query. The only way is to write manually the statement in rdb format and this is very difficult. Is there a way to be able to design my query graphically?

Error 3125 - The Database Engine Can't Find <name>
I am running SQL 7.0 with Access 97 as a front end. I am having a problem linking one of the tables with an odbc connection. When I try to link the table, it gives me the error : "The database engine can't find <name of table>. Make sure it is a valid parameter or alias name, that it doesn't include invalid characters or punctuation, and that the name isn't too long." I have tried renaming the table, and it then will allow the connection, but if I rename it back to the original name, it doesn't work again. The table name is "Invoice_Line_Item". Changing the name permanently is not an option. Has anyone else run across this problem, or know of a fix for it.

Critical Problem SQL Server 7.0 - Database Engine
We are a National Level Institutional Stock Broker in India providing trading platform to our Brokers to trade on Exchange nation-wide. We are using Compaq Proliant 8500 Serires computers in clusterd mode having RAM of 1.5 GB on each machine. We are using the Computer-To-Computer-Link (CTCL) solution / application for routing orders of brokers to the Stock Exchange. This application uses the SQL server 7.0 in clustered mode as back-end database on Windows NT Ver 4.0. On daily basis around 20,000 transactions are processed in the database. Following are the Database Details ---------------------------------- 1. Dat Size : 1890 MB 2. Log Size : 838 MB ------------------ Total Size: 2728 MB 3. File growth options: Automated file growth, By percent : 10 4. Maximum File Size : Unrestricted file growth On April 25, 2001, we found that application was not getting initialize, we (technical team) checked all the procedures, which are getting triggered at that particular time and found all of them were ok, but application did not started. We also suspected that one of the procedure might have been corrupted, so we re-compiled all procedures which get triggered before starting the application. After havind done so, the application was still not getting initalized / started. We also executed following commands: 1. DBCC CHECKDB to check inconsistancy, if any but found none (log is available) 2. DUMP TRAN with no_log (To clear transation logs) We also executed procedures one after the other sequentially, which were being executed before the application starts after binding once again. After having done this, we also suspected that the problem might have been with "SQL Server 7.0 database engine" and therefore decided to re-start the computers, after which we found that the applicatio started without any hindrance / errors. This has raised some issues as follows: 1. Has the database corrupted ? If yes, weather it is possible to run DBCC CHECKDB, SQL queries on a corrupted database ? 2. Was there any systems environment failure ? If so, is it possible to run DBCC CHECKDB, SQL queries on a corrupted database? 3. Is there any possiblity of Database Engine failure? What can be the consequeces on Database Engine failure ? 4. Is it possible that Database Engine Failure is the cause for our case ? Our some of the engineers are of the opinion that the SQL server need to be shutdown and re-started periodically. 1. Will this in any way avoid such re-currance in the future? 2. If this is true, we would like to have your technical feedback as to why this is necessary? Should you require any further clarification, I shall be glad to furnish it to you in this regard. I request you to give your techical feed back on an urgent basis as our applications are CRITICAL and needs UTMOST CARE, hence needs consistancy of database. I shall be glad to receive your feedback at my e-mail: gchavan@iseindia.com or (+91)(022-781 2389). Govind Chavan, Mumbai, INDIA

Database Engine Tuning Advisor Configuration?
I was trying to get some indexing recommendations from the Database Engine Tuning Advisor by consuming a trace file with known indexing issues. After several minutes all it did was create a report or two which list existing indexes. Not very useful. I must be doing something wrong. A message displays that "75% of the consumed workload has syntax errors." I guess it can't take a regular trace (.trc) file? I am conderned that the trace file I used did not contain what the Advisor needs. Do I need to setup the trace a special way to support the Advisor? Also, what does "Database for workload analysis" mean? I chose tempdb but there is no Help, and BOL is a maze of small uninformative snippets . . . Thanks, Michael

Database Engine Tuning Advisor Error
I have a very irritating error with Database Engine Tuning Advisor. While processing traces from Sql Profiler I keep getting trace log full of syntax error of most of queries - some of them very simple and ALL of them perfectly correct ( I check them separatly in QueryAnaliser ) - program gives recomendtation when I enter queries one by one - in that case the syntax is correct for Database Engine Tuning Advisor, but I just can't imagine why quries given to analysis in the set aren't correct? I dont' want to enter trace query by query (while I have thousends of them) ! It all seem like a Database Engine Tuning Advisor bug, any ideas about this problem? Joanna

HELP! Unable To Select Database Engine In Management Studio
Hi All, I am new to SQL Server and having trouble using SQL Server Management Studio. I am unable to select the Database Engine in management studio. I am able to see the instance of default database engine (MSSQLServer) running in Reporting Services manager as well as in Surface area configuration manager, but it is not visible in the drop down list in Management Studio's "Select Database Engine" menu. I had removed Sql server 2005 earlier ( I was able to select the database engine in Management Studio then). But when I installed it again, I was unable to install the Sql Server Tools (it said that my Upgrade is blocked). So, I cleaned the Windows Registry of all keys containing 'Sql'. After this I tried installing it again and successfully installed Sql Server 2005 + ALL TOOLS. But this time I am unable to select the database engine in management studio. Thanks and Regards to ALL
