Store A Null Value Into A Database Coming From A Form

Apr 27, 2007

I have a form and a connectionString to a SQL database. If the textbox at the form is empty i want to store a null value there but when i pass this value as a parameter it brings the following error: Failed to convert parameter value from a String to a Int32..
cmd.Parameters("@Segundo_nombre").Value = txtSecondName.Text.ToString  --> suposing is null it brings an Error.
cmd.Parameters.Add(Apellido)
 How can i manage this? I want to store this value if it is null or not.
Also i don't know how to assign a null value to a variable. I tried with
v_flag = check_selection.check_string(v_idioma)

If v_flag = 1 Then 'la variable posee el texto Seleccione
v_idioma = DBNull.Value
but it's not working.
Thanks!!

How To Pass Null Value To The Database If A Form Field Is Empty?

May 31, 2004

How can I pass into the database (@User_fax = null) if the fax form field is empty, from a command type Stored Procedure? For example:

Dim CmdUpdate As New SqlCommand("Form2_NewUser", strConnection)
CmdUpdate.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure

CmdUpdate.Parameters.Add("@User_fax", SqlDbType.char, 9)
CmdUpdate.Parameters("@User_fax").Value = fax.Text()

...

strConnection.open()
CmdUpdate.ExecuteNonQuery
strConnection.close()

And, the stored procedure inside Sql server:

USE market1
GO
ALTER PROC Form2_NewUser
@User_id bigint, @User_fax char(9),...

AS

SET NOCOUNT ON
UPDATE Users
SET User_fax = @User_fax, ...

WHERE User_id = @User_id
SET NOCOUNT OFF
GO

Passing Value From A Access Form To A Query

Jun 23, 2006

Frustration has gotten the best of me on this one. Can anyone help?
I need to pass the current value in an Access Data Project (back-end is MS SQL) text field to the where condition in an SQL using VBA. This is what I have, but does not work.

Private Sub Command44_Click()
Me.SS.SetFocus
Dim strSQL As String
Dim strSSecurity As String
strSSecurity = Me.SS
strSQL = "Update Employees Set employees.PositionID = '',employees.jobcode = '' Where employees.ss = strSSecurity"
DoCmd.RunSQL strSQL
End Sub

It is supposed to take the current Social Security number from the form and match it against the employees table. Once it finds the matching record it should update the PositionID and JobCode fields to '' (empty string)
But it doesn't
Anyone with any ideas?
Thanks

Passing A SSIS Global Variable To A Declared Variable In A Query In SQL Task

Mar 6, 2008

I have a SQL Task that updates running totals on a record inserted using a Data Flow Task. The package runs without error, but the actual row does not calculate the running totals. I suspect that the inserted record is not committed until the package completes and the SQL Task is seeing the previous record as the current. Here is the code in the SQL Task:

DECLARE @DV INT;
SET @DV = (SELECT MAX(DateValue) FROM tblTG);
DECLARE @PV INT;
SET @PV = @DV - 1;

I've not been successful in passing a SSIS global variable to a declared parameter, but is it possible to do this:

DECLARE @DV INT;
SET @DV = ?;
DECLARE @PV INT;
SET @PV = @DV - 1;

I have almost 50 references to these parameters in the query so a substitution would be helpful.

Passing A Parameter From A Form To An Sql Sequel View

Oct 23, 2006

Hi, We have recently upsized an access db to a sequel server db. The queries in access have been made into views in sql. ASP will be the front end. We are having problems passing an input from a form into a view. In access the parameter had to match what was selected on the form but sequel doesn't like it. At the moment, for testing purposes, the value has to be hard coded i.e. case_id = 64. Is there anything is ASP that can help? Thank you

MS Access Front End To SQL Server Problem Passing Form Value To Report

Jul 23, 2005

I just changed my Access 2002 database to a SQL Server ADP project. Ihad a form where the user entered a value into a text box and when acommand button on the form was clicked a Report was opened. The reportsrecord source is a query. The query uses the value from the form textbox to restrict the query.Table name = EggsTableone of the columns in the table is named: EggColorForm name = EggColorFormForm text box name = ColorTextBoxThis sql worked for the query before I converted to SQL:SELECT EggsTable.EggColorFROM EggsTableWHERE (((EggsTable.EggColor)=[Forms]![EggColorForm]![ColorTextBox]));This no longer works. Can I change the syntax somehow to get this towork? I tried dropping the brackets around the word "Forms", I trieddropping all the square brackets, etc., nothing worked.I also tried just opening the report with the report's Server Filterproperty set to:EggColor=N'Forms.EggColorForm.ColorTextBox'I tried using the Report's open event to pass the form value directlyto the report. I tried setting a variable from the text box value onthe form. So far, nothing works. Any ideas?

Passing Variable Value Through Environment Variable

Feb 15, 2008

Hi All!

I have a parent package that contains two children... The second child depends on the succes of the first child.

THe first child generates a variable value and stores it in an Environment variable ( Visibility - All ) ...After the first succeeds, the second will start executing and will pick up the variable value from environment variable( through package configuration setting )...

Unfortunately, this doesn't work...As the second child picks the stale value of the environment variables...Essentially it assigns variable value not after the first child is finished, but right at the beginning of parent execution...

I tried to execute coth children as Out Of Proc as well as In Proc...The same

Would anybody have an idea how to resolve this problem?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Setting Empty Text Box Input On Form To Null Parameter For Sql

Feb 19, 2007

Hi,
 I'm pretty new to ASP.NET and VB, but I'm working on a project which is essentially a staff directory. Using VS 2005, I've setup a basic grid view which connects to an object which connects via a data layer to a SQL database with Name, Surname, Email, Extension No and Department fields.
I have it working so that if a user enters a name and surname for example, it will return all records with either the name matching or surname matching input parameters. What I want to do is to set up a SQL query which is:
 SELECT * FROM records WHERE (Name LIKE @Name) AND (Surname LIKE @Surname) AND (Email LIKE @Email) AND (Dept LIKE @Dept)
so that if the user only enters the first name and surname for example as above, it ONLY returns the record which matches the first name and surname and not all records with either/or. One way I've thought of to do this is to convert the empty fields to "Nothing" so that it fullfils the search parameter for the empty fields. If someone can explain how to do this, or can suggest a better way, I'd be grateful.
Cheers,
Tom

Passing NULL Value Not Working

Oct 24, 2007

I currently have a stored procedure that looks something like this  SELECT * FROM tblQuestions WHERE Title LIKE ISNULL('%'+@Name+'%', Title)I have a form that supplies this value.  This statement should make it so that if a NULL value is passed in, then it will return all the rows, if some text is specified, then it will not.  On my SQLDataSource on the page where the parameter is supplied I have set ConvertEmptyStringsToNull to True, but when I say in my code,SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters.Add("@Name", TextBox1.Text);It won't give me back any of the rows, I know that the stored procedure works fine because I can get it to work by a basic query and other testing on it, so somewhere in my form, the NULL value isn't being passed, I belive that it is passing an empty string and I don't know why.  Thank you in advance /jcarver

Contact Form - Variable Number Of Input Fields, Store Data As Xml String ?

Jul 13, 2007

Im trying to determine the best way to store data gathered from a form that a user will fill out online.  The form is dynamic and is customized at run time based on group-specific criteria.  The end result is a form that might have 3 extra text boxes, 2 extra sets of radio buttons and a freeform textbox, whereas for another group, there might be a slightly different set of input fields.   Now comes the issue of storing this data.  Since the fields can be somewhat dynamic, it could get tricky to define table columns for each possible input field.  So Im considering storing the data as xml.  Has anyone else had to build custom forms and ended up storing the data as xml ?

Passing Value To A Variable

Aug 9, 2007

Hi,
This is pretty simple but I am doing somethin really stupid somewhere, I am trying to pass a value to a variable declared in a package using some SQL code, I declared a variable "var1" and assigned the scope to the package , then I dropped a execute SQL task within the package and wrote a simple sql code that would get the maximum id from a table, "select max(id) from table" , now I want to assign the variable this max value.so in the parameter mapping tab I select the variable give it a parameter name of 0 and size of -1 along with direction of "output". everythin looks simple but when I try to use this variable value in my next execute sql task it behaves weirdly, I am trying to update anothet table using this variable value, so I add another task and put this code in there " update table2 set id = ? " , and on the parameter mapping tab I set the direction as input, however when I look at the column it updated th column with a weird number , xomethin like "230072408" which doesnt mean anything. I know that tha max value of ID is 10.
Please help.

Thanks

SQLDataSource Parameters Passing Null

Aug 23, 2007

 I am using a SQLDataSource with Stored Procedures. The Select, Insert and Update all work well. However I cannot get the delete to work. My stored procedures are tested and verified and the parameter names are the same as the source columns. When I try to run the delete an error that the stored procedure expects the parameter @locationStationId, however this value passes properly for the Update command?!?  I tried to change the parameter to original_locationStationID to pass the original value, however this result in Null being passed for the parameter.
 I cannot understand why this works for Update and passes the location ID, but will not work for DELETE. Can anyone shed any light onto the matter?
Thanks.OldValuesParameterFormatString="original_{0}" UpdateCommand="spUpdateLocation" UpdateCommandType="StoredProcedure"

What's the correct syntax for passing null-values? But maybe (because i cannot find anything on this) i should ask if this is even possible...

Passing NULL To DataSet Parmameter

Apr 13, 2007

Hey All,

I have a number Stored Procs that have been around for a while that pull the entire list, or if I pass an ID, will just the record for that ID like below.

I want to be able to use these querries to poplate Multi-Select parameter dropdowns. going to the Data tab and creating a new dataset, I put in the SP name, and close the window. I then go to the Red ! point to preview the data it prompts me for my ID parmaeter on my SP. In the dropdown list it has '<Null>' (no ' though). When I run it, it works fine and returns all of my records.

When I run the report, it errors saying I didn't pass a parm for ID. I go back to the data tab, and edit my DataSet hitting the elipse. I go to the 3 tab called parameters, and type the following I get the following errors:

@ID = <Null> ---- ERROR - [BC30201] Expression expected

@ID= ---- ERROR - Return statement in function must return a value

@ID = Null -----ERROR - Null constant not supported use System.DBNull instead

@ID = System.DBNull ----ERROR - [BCS30691] DBNull is a type in System and cannot be used in an expression

@ID=System.DBNull.Value --- NO ERROR, but it does not return anything either. I also did a SQL Trace, and I can see that it doesn't even send the querry to the database.

Does anyone know another magic value I can pass to get this to work?

I am being a little stuborn, I know that I could just create new procs, and wrap up the null, but the more stuff you create the more you have to maintain, so I would prefer to reuse these.

Thanks in advance.

Eric Wild

PS: My company is moving from crystal reports to Reporting service, and Reporting services is Rocks! It is very intuitve, simple and straign forward. The formatting is easy with the table and the matrix control blows away the crosstab control in crystal. Also, I'm finding that because crystal was so un extendable, that I would spend hours shaping sql to get over it's blemishes, and hours shaping it in the report, only to sometimes reliaze that the proposed onetime hack wouldn't work, and have to start all over! So far with RSS any tips and tricks I have learned can very easily be applied to any report I work on! Aslo, I do mostly interanet web apps, and it is nice to dump my reports on the Report Server, and not worry about haing to create a web page, create a datasource and all the ansilary stuff to go along with it. The only thing I don't like is the name 'Roporting Services': It does not stick out too far in Google Searches like 'AJAX.NET' or 'ASP.NET'. Anyway kudoes to the Reporting Services team!

Passing Null Values To Stored Procedures

Aug 29, 2006

Version: ASP.Net 2.0Language: C#Hello Everyone!I'm saving data from a function to an SQL Server 2000 db via a stored procedure. There are a few fields which are conditional and thus need not be passed to the procedure everytime. Under those circumstances I need to store null values in the fields.The problem is if I the value of the parameter as null, VS throws the error that a required parameter is not passed. I tried setting 'IsNullable' property of the parameter to true but it works for only those fields who are declared NULL in the stored procedure (For e.g. @DOB DATETIME = NULL).Strangely, this works well in classic ASP.Does anyone know how to accomplish this? Note, altering stored procedures is not an option for me.Thanks a lot!

DNN DAL SqlDataProvider Passing NULL To SQL Stored Procedure

Jun 1, 2006

Hello,I'm trying to pass a null object to a stored procedure to update a SQL Table boolean field with a null value.  My SQL Table boolean column allows nulls.I'm using an InfoObject which has several properties all corresponding to fields in the SQL Table.  One of those fields is a boolean.  I create an instance of the InfoObject in my code and assigns values to the various properties.  The boolean property in question (call it InfoOjbect.BooleanProperty) is not assigned anything.  I then call my StoredProcedure passing the InfoObject to it (using the DotNetNuke DAL architecture) and the final result is the Table's boolean column is populated with a 0 and not a NULL.  If I explicitly define the InfoObject.BooleanProperty = null.nullboolean before passing it to the Stored Procedure, the same thing happens.  How do I pass a null to the SQL database for a boolean field?  I've tried making InfoObject.BooleanProperty = dbnull.value but it won't let me do this saying "dbnull cannot be converted to a boolean."  Do I have to explicitly create my InfoObject properties to allow for a null to be assigned to it?Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm using the DotNetNuke DAL architecture passing my InfoObject through a dataprovider to the sqldataprovider which calls the SQL Stored Procedure to add the new record to the Table.Thanks in advance for any help.

Passing Null Value From Front End Access To SQL Back End

Dec 19, 2007

Hi,

I'm not sure if this question should be in this thread but anyway...

I have a form (Mricosoft Access front end) in which the user enter a Pending Date in one of the fields. The date is populated into my backend (SQL Server) withouht problems.
Whenever the issue which had the pending date in the field is resolved I'd like to delete this date from this field and also from the back end. At the moment I'm not being able to pass the "value" Null to my back end (probably because it's a datetime type). I've searched the net throughout and I couldn't find a way around it. Only found solution to when the data is not date but numbers/letters, etc... Any ideas on how can I sort this out?

Many thanks

Syntax For Passing Variable-usp

May 20, 2007

hi guys what is the syntax for using the passing variable part into the name of a table in a store procedure. in particular: (assume already declared the variable periodseq.

select *
into Temp_Usage_@periodseq
from Master_usage
where Master_usage.PERIODSEQ = @periodseq

in particular the Temp_Usage_@periodseq line of code, how do i "add" the periodseq (which is a number) to the end of the name of Temp_Usage, i.e: Temp_Usage_112
is the syntax an & like Temp_Usage_&@periodseq?
Cheers
Champinco

Passing A Variable To A SQL Statement

Mar 10, 2008

I've been coding a few years and SSIS makes me feel more stupid than any program I've ever used.
I've read BOL and bought a book. Can't say either one has really helped.

I'm still a complete idiot after one week of working with it. I apologize for asking so many stupid questions.

What I'm trying to do now is parameterize a SQL statement.

I have a variable that's a string. I have a DataFlowComponent as a data source. I find references all over the Internet and this forum to something called an "ExecuteSQLTask" but I sure can't figure out what that is. In my toolbox I have data flow sources for DataReader, Excel, Flat Files, Old DB, Raw file, and XML but no Execute Sql Task.

Anyway SELECT * FROM TABLE WHERE COLUMN='Value' in the SQL Command property is simple enough. Now I want 'Value' to be a variable. You know, like in T/SQL DECLARE @Foo VarChar(25). Creating the variable is easy as pie.

I have found at least 10 different examples of specifying variables on the web, all of which claim to be SSIS examples, Is it User::Variable? @[User::Variable]? @Variable?

I want to read rows from a table, with a a variable value in the WHERE clause, and pass them to the fuzzy lookup task.

Is my approach fundamentally flawed in some way?
