Handling NULL Values.

Oct 19, 2007

Hi,

I would like to know the solution for the below problem.

Actually I have a single Hibernate xml file which has the query on it. And I am accessing the xml file for SQL server 2005 and Oracle 10G. But the query is working in Oracle and not working in SQl Server.

I noticed from the query that handling 'NULL' is the problem.

Findings:
1. The following query is the same in both Oracle and SQL Server, which is causing the Issue.
SELECT *
FROM CLIENT_SKU AS o
WHERE o.OU_ID = 20000000
AND ((o.CLIENT_SKU_START_CODE <= 'wwwww' AND o.CLIENT_SKU_END_CODE >= 'wwwww')
OR (o.CLIENT_SKU_START_CODE <= '' AND o.CLIENT_SKU_END_CODE >= '')
OR (o.CLIENT_SKU_START_CODE >= 'wwwww' AND o.CLIENT_SKU_END_CODE < '')
OR (o.CLIENT_SKU_START_CODE = 'wwwww' AND o.CLIENT_SKU_END_CODE is null))

CAUSE:
Oracle treats NULL and the empty string almost the same making the latter almost an alias for NULL
The following two statements produce identical results:
1. update employee set lastname = ''
2. update employee set lastname = NULL
In our case, the CLIENT_SKU_END_CODE is an empty string which is being checked with an empty string returns False in Oracle where as returns True in Sql Server causing the issue.

It would be great if any one who can give some possible solution to resolve the same.

Thnx

Handle Null Date Values

Feb 19, 2008

Hi,
In my Excel file, The Application date column contains empty for some rows. In SSIS I am using one Data Conversion to that Application Date column to change it as Date[dt_Date]. This data conversion is giving error Conversion failed. In Sqlserver table, I declare ApplicationDate column datatype as DateTime.
I want to keep those empty date values as Null in Sqlserver.
I tried the IMEX=1 property still it is not working. How to solve this error?

Thanks in advance.

Configure SqldataSource With Null Date Values

Mar 20, 2008

I am attempting to create search parameters for a gridview control and I am experiencing a small issue. When I get to a date parameter I am unable to display null values.
I setup a sqldatasource and created the parameters below to handle the selections for minimum date required and the maximum date required for the date columns in the database. The problem is I do not know how to display null dates.
Is there a way to incorporate something into the search page to show null dataes?

Sql Where Clause  1 WHERE (LSS_Requests.TypeCode = @TypeCode) AND (LSS_Requests.PersonNo LIKE '%' + @PersonNo + '%') AND
2 (LSS_Requests.TicketNo LIKE '%' + @TicketNo + '%') AND (LSS_Requests.Name LIKE '%' + @Name + '%') AND
3 (LSS_Requests.RequestName LIKE '%' + @RequestName + '%') AND (LSS_Requests.RequiredDate >= @Fromrequireddate) AND
4 (LSS_Requests.RequiredDate <= @ToRequiredDate) AND (LSS_Requests.OriginationDate >= @SearchFromOriginationDate) AND
5 (LSS_Requests.OriginationDate <= @SearchToOriginationDate) AND (LSS_Requests.LastUpdated >= @SearchFromUpdatedDate) AND
6 (LSS_Requests.LastUpdated <= @SearchUpdatedToDate) AND (LSS_Users_1.userFullName LIKE @SearchDDLUsers) AND
7 (LSS_Users.userFullName LIKE @SearchddlCIAsignee) AND (LSS_Requests.TypeCode = 'CC') AND (LSS_lu_Status.stNm LIKE '%' + @StatusName + '%')

Compressing Multiple Rows With Null Values To One Row With Out Null Values After A Pivot Transform

Jan 25, 2008

I have a pivot transform that pivots a batch type. After the pivot, each batch type has its own row with null values for the other batch types that were pivoted. I want to group two fields and max() the remaining batch types so that the multiple rows are displayed on one row. I tried using the aggregate transform, but since the batch type field is a string, the max() function fails in the package. Is there another transform or can I use the aggragate transform another way so that the max() will work on a string?

Handling Null Dates

Feb 8, 2008

Hi, I have a database field for completion dates - until a task is completed, there is no date and at the moment I have null values in this field.My problem arises when searching the records.  I have a search form which passes parameters via a query string to a SqlDataSource.  The SqlDataSource has the CancelSelectOnNullParameter set to true, so if any fields on the search form are left blank, they are ignored.  For other dates, my sql query contains something like  (Job.EnteredAt < ISNULL(DATEADD(d, 1, @EntTo), '2099-01-01')) This approach doesn't return any records for the completion date as there is no date to compare to the '2099-01-01'.Can anyone give me any tips on how I should handle this?  I'm willing to change my structure, search page or sql query!Thanks, Neil

Handling Null Fields With Three-tier Architecture

Nov 28, 2006

I using Visual Web Designer Express (with Visual Basic), with a SQL Server 2000 database.   I have a prototype application running satisfactorily using code that builds queries, but I'm now trying to rebuild the application "properly" using three-tier architecture.  I have been following the principles of Scott Mitchell's tutorials.  I have created an database .xsd with a table adaptor, and replaced the rather grotty query-building code in the business layer with better code referencing the table adaptor.   Thus where the first version had code: -
        Dim queryString As String = "SELECT * FROM NZGDB_User WHERE USRid = '" & Userid & "'"        Dim message As String = ""        Dim Found As Boolean = False        Try            Using connection As New SqlConnection(GDB_AppSettings.Connection)                Dim command As New SqlCommand(queryString, connection)                connection.Open()
                Dim reader As SqlDataReader = command.ExecuteReader()
                If reader.Read() Then                    Found = True                    _USRid = reader("USRid")                    _USRPassword = reader("USRPassword")                    _USREmail = reader("USREmail")                    _USRTitle = reader("USRTitle")                    _USRName = reader("USRName")                    _USRRole = reader("USRRole")                    If IsDBNull(reader("USRAgreedConditions")) = False Then                        _USRAgreedConditions = reader("USRAgreedConditions")                    End If                End If                reader.Close()            End Using        Catch ex As Exception            If Left(Err.Description, 68) = "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server." Then                Return "Cannot open database to logon"            Else                Return Err.Description            End If        End Try
the new version is much more elegant: -
        Dim taUser As New NZGDBTableAdapters.NZGDB_UserTableAdapter()
        Dim tbUser As NZGDB.NZGDB_UserDataTable = taUser.GetUserByUserid(userid)        If tbUser.Count <> 1 Then   '   Anything other than 0 or 1 should be impossible            Return "User not found"        End If
        Dim trUser As NZGDB.NZGDB_UserRow = tbUser(0)        _USRid = userid        _USRPassword = password        _USREmail = trUser.USREmail        _USRTitle = trUser.USRTitle        _USRName = trUser.USRName        _USRRole = trUser.USRRole        _USRAgreedConditions = trUser.USRAgreedConditions
However, there is a problem.  The database field USRAgreedConditions is a Datetime field that can be null.  The new version works perfectly when it is NOT null, but throws an exception: -
System.Data.StrongTypingException was unhandled by user code  Message="The value for column 'USRAgreedConditions' in table 'NZGDB_User' is DBNull."  Source="App_Code.wt2vzoc1"  ....
There is no point in writing: -        If Not IsDBNull(trUser.USRAgreedConditions) Then            _USRAgreedConditions = trUser.USRAgreedConditions        End Ifbecause the exception occurs within the automatically-created code in the data access layer.  I tried changing the Nullvalue property of the field USRAgreedConditions in the table adaptor, but the only valid option is (Throw Exception) unless the field is a String.  Of course USRAgreedConditions is a Datetime field, so I can't change the property.
It seems that my only options are: -1.   To stick with the old query-building code.   But this doesn't give me the advantages of a proper 3-tier architecture2.   To change the generated code in wt2vzoc.  This MUST be a bad idea - surely I should leave this code untouched.  Besides, what if the table adaptor has to be regenerated when I change the table design?3.   Code a Try block within the business layer: -    Try         _USRAgreedConditions = trUser.USRAgreedConditions    Catch ex As Exception         _USRAgreedConditions = Nothing    End Try
This seems to work OK, but seems less elegant than the original code in the old version: -       If IsDBNull(reader("USRAgreedConditions")) = False Then            _USRAgreedConditions = reader("USRAgreedConditions")       End IfIs there a better way?

NULL Values Returned When Reading Values From A Text File Using Data Reader.

Feb 23, 2007

I have a DTSX package which reads values from a fixed-length text file using a data reader and writes some of the column values from the file to an Oracle table. We have used this DTSX several times without incident but recently the process started inserting NULL values for some of the columns when there was a valid value in the source file. If we extract some of the rows from the source file into a smaller file (i.e 10 rows which incorrectly returned NULLs) and run them through the same package they write the correct values to the table, but running the complete file again results in the NULL values error. As well, if we rerun the same file multiple times the incidence of NULL values varies slightly and does not always seem to impact the same rows. I tried outputting data to a log file to see if I can determine what happens and no error messages are returned but it seems to be the case that the NULL values occur after pulling in the data via a Data Reader. Has anyone seen anything like this before or does anyone have a suggestion on how to try and get some additional debugging information around this error?

Handling Columns With Multiple Values

Jun 9, 2006

I am writing a stored procedure that needs a access individual entries in a column with multiple entries delimited by a comma(yeah i know, not 1st NF) . Like this:

Key

NotANormalizedCol

1

1324, 5124, 5435,5467

2

423, 23, 5345

3

52334, 53443, 1224

4

12, 4, 1243,66

is there a function that returns a substring given a delimiter character? the only substring returning function that i found are the LEFT and RIGHT that returns fixed length substring.

I am pretty new to this, so I apologize if this is a trivial questions

Handling Multiple Values From A Stored Procedure In ASP.NET.

Jan 21, 2008

Hi all,
I’m returning two values from a stored procedure, one is a basic string confirming that an email has been sent and the other is the normal value returned from running an INSERT statement. So in my code I’m using the ExecuteNonQuery() method. I’m not sure how to handle both returned values in my code in my data layer. This is what I have:
ExecuteNonQuery(cmd);
return Convert.ToString(cmd.Parameters["@ReturnedValue"].Value).ToLower();
Obviously I’d need to return the value returned by the ExecuteNonQuery method as well, normally I’d simply convert the value to an int and precede this with the return keyword like so:
return (int)ExecuteNonQuery(cmd);
Obviously I can’t do this as I need to return two values, the normal value returned by the ExecuteNonQuery() method and my own output parameter value. Any ideas how I can do both? My current method containing the code further above returns a string but clearly this doesn’t help. I’m guessing that maybe I should return an object array so I can return both values? I haven’t encountered this problem before so I’m just guessing. Please help.
Thanks

Handling Large Data Values In Textboxes

Mar 28, 2007

Hi, Ive got a report using a List item that is vertically displaying the columns from a table. The problem I run into, is that some of the fields in this table contain large blocks of text where the users have entered comments and such.

I am using Textboxes to display this data.

So my report will look something like
-----
Field label 1 Field value 1
Field label 2 Field value 2
Field label 3

<white space>

<page break>

Field value 3 ---> this is a big block of text
Field label 4 Field value 4
etc
------
It appears as though the report attempts to keep the contents of each textbox together even if that means breaking onto an entirely new page to do this. I would prefer for the data to flow more natrually instead where the page breaks in the middle of the data being displayed should it be too large to fit on the page it started on.

-----
Field label 1 Field value 1
Field label 2 Field value 2
Field label 3 Field value 3 --- As much as can fit on this page

<page break>

Field value 3 ---> remaining data that broke over the page
Field label 4 Field value 4
etc
------

Any suggestions would be apprecaited.

Null Values For Datetime Values Converted To '0001-01-01'

Mar 29, 2006

Hi

can somebody explain me how I can assign a NULL value to a datetime type field in the script transformation editor in a data flow task.
In the script hereunder, Row.Datum1_IsNull is true, but still Row.OutputDatum1 will be assigned a value '0001-01-01' which generates an error (not a valid datetime). All alternatives known to me (CDate("") or Convert.ToDateTime("") or Convert.ToDateTime(System.DBNull.Value)) were not successful.
Leaving out the ELSE clause generates following error: Error: Year, Month, and Day parameters describe an un-representable DateTime.

If Not Row.Datum1_IsNull Then

Row.OutputDatum1 = Row.Datum1

Else

Row.OutputDatum1 = CDate(System.Convert.DBNull)

End If

Any help welcome.

SQL Null Values In VB

Apr 10, 2006

I have tried doing a search, as I figured this would be a common problem, but I wasn't able to find anything.  I know that my SP is functional because when I use VWD execute the query outside of the webpage, I get the correct results -however I have to ensure that a field is either entered, or set to <NULL>.  In my SET's I want it to use the wildcards.
What I want is to do a search (plenty of existing topics on that, however none were of help to me).  If a field is entered, then it is included in the search.  Otherwise it should be ignored.  In my VB I have the standard stored procedure call, passing in values to all of the parameters in the stored proc below:
CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.SearchDog@tagnum int,@ownername varchar(50), @mailaddress varchar(50),@address2 varchar(50),@city varchar(50),@telephone varchar(50),@doggender varchar(50),@dogbreed varchar(50),@dogage varchar(50),@dogcolour varchar(50),@dogname varchar(50),@applicationdate varchar(50)AS IF @tagnum=-1  SET @tagnum=NULL  SET @ownername = '%'+@ownername+'%'  SET @mailaddress = '%'+@mailaddress+'%'  SET @address2='%'+@address2+'%'  SET @city = '%'+@city+'%'  SET @telephone='%'+@telephone+'%'  SET @dogcolour='%'+@dogcolour+'%'  SET @dogbreed='%'+@dogbreed+'%'  SET @dogage='%'+@dogage+'%'  SET @doggender='%'+@doggender+'%'  SET @dogname='%'+@dogname+'%'  SET @applicationdate='%'+@applicationdate+'%'
 SELECT DISTINCT  * FROM DogRegistry WHERE (  TagNum = @tagnum OR  OwnerName LIKE @ownername OR  MailAddress LIKE @mailaddress OR  Address2 LIKE @address2 OR  City LIKE @city OR  Telephone LIKE @telephone OR  DogGender LIKE @doggender OR  DogBreed LIKE @dogbreed OR  DogAge LIKE @dogage OR  DogColour LIKE @dogcolour OR  DogName LIKE @dogname OR  ApplicationDate LIKE @applicationdate  ) AND TagNum > 0GO
I don't know why it is creating links inside my SP -ignore them.  TagNum is the primary key, if that makes a difference.
On the webpage, it ONLY works when every field has been filled (and then it will only return 1 row, as it should, given the data entered).  Debugging has shown that when nothing is entered it passes "".
Any ideas?
